  • On Thursday, July 28, the Storm Prediction Center placed most of New England under a "Slight Risk" category for severe thunderstorms, due to the potential for organized storms packing severe wind gusts.
Supercells were also a possibility, and that's exactly what happened in south-central Massachusetts. However, a small percentage of supercells aren't actually severe. Though this one produced some nice-looking structure, the only report that came in was for pea-sized hail a few miles to my north.
On the same day, a photogenic tornado formed in Colebrook, Connecticut from a smaller cell showing only weak rotation. I had a nagging feeling, but I was feeling lazy and didn't leave home in time to chase it.
I should've known better. Tornadoes in this region have a history of forming from small showers without warning, as was the case during a July 2021 outbreak that produced three separate tornadoes. I'm really kicking myself for not leaving earlier, but this was still a good chase.
