Sorry guys. RUclips is bugging today. Think the word "White" got us demonitized and deranked so I reuploaded
Anyways as far as this video goes, not gonna lie, we felt it was pretty underwhelming mostly because we felt like the discussion stayed on the surface level. Same cultural talking points which arent really the root of the issue. We feel like talking about it once and a while is fine but when the entire discussion is just that, it starts to feel like a distraction but maybe yall disagree. We wanna hear your thoughts!

As a native American.. the only thing about pretty white girls in headdresses at Coachella that offends me is that non natives think they have the right to decide who is and isnt allowed to practice native culture. 99.9% of natives dont care if you wear native stuff that's why sell it at all our reservation stores... the only thing that scares natives is the death of our culture and it seems these anti racist all hell bent in making sure only native people practice native culture so that it'll be all but gone in a century. Culture only dies when it stops spreading and if you want america to be theworlds premier multucultural hub you should at least let the people practice the cultures which have existed in this country for thousands of years and exist nowhere else on the planet. In fact this multicultural hub is the last place on the planet where people should team up to finish off dying cultures. Also to your point about "traditional ceremonial headdresses" anything you can buy off wish isnt a ceremonial headress and isn't a threat to my culture or our practices the same that someone dressing as a priest for Halloween doesnt hurt actual priests. It's almost insulting to think we'd be offended by wearing something made of plastic you bought off the internet for 5 bucks from china. The only headdress you'd ever be forbidden to wear at a party would be one given to you directly from a chief or a medicine man. And to be honest if you were actually given the headress you are probably fine to wear it. This is just another case of white people/SJWs getting all offended on behalf of people who aren't even offended themselves. No human being has the right to tell you how to dress and what cultures you're allowed to admire. When Europeans first got to America the government was so scared at how frequently the Europeans defected to native society that they made having long hair illegal because it was seen as a stepping stone to defection. White people telling other white peoppe not to practice native culture is just an old racist relic of the past because white people were afraid of other white people adopting native culture over their supposedly superior European culture. Any time you lose your shit at a person in a costume you're contributing to our cultural genocide. You know what race I'm not worried about their culture dying? Japanese culture, because everybody is allowed to practice it, it has spread to every corner of the planet. Nobody who gets upset about cultural appropriation has ever contributed to a culture. Culture has shaped us over thousands of years and no human has the right to dictate who is allowed to resonate with what cultures

It is refreshing to hear you say that. I must admit I was a bit surprised by the guys' comments as am getting a bit sick of this cultural appropriation getting way out of hand. As a little girl I loved dressing up in different cultural costumes but nowadays my parents would be lambasted for letting me dress that way. It is getting out of hand like saying cannot use the word blackboard. Seems now people call them chalkboards. Yet we also have whiteboards. I don't think one is inferior to another lol. It is just crazy and does not solve anything at all.

He says "you aren't discriminated against because of your skin color"
He is assuming that she never faced any sort of discrimination just solely based on her skin color, which is not only racist, but it denies that person any sort of individualism and also denies any experience that they had.
For example, I joined a clan on a game that was comprised of black people, they were all friends.
On of the clan members told me that they were trying to make a "black only clan" so I had to leave.
    That is discrimination.
How does this guy know that she has never been discriminated against just because she has a certain skin color.
People can be discriminated against for any reason at any time. For this dude to deny that is dishonest and very closed minded.
Just because black people in America can have similar experiences doesn't mean they have similar cultures. There are black people in America who never face discrimination because of their race. I know this because I have met quite a few that tell me so.
The point is, that black people are not a monolith, just like white people are not a monolith.....his views of the world are sad.
Also, the term "reverse racism" is probably one of the dumbest phrases of the 21st century.
Reverse racism would equal out to not racism. The reverse of racism is not racist. So I don't really like that question. It implies that only white people can be racist and if you are racist toward white people, then it's somehow reverse racism?
    White people didn't invent racism...

well, it's the concept moreso than experiences. he makes an assumption that is true most of the time. i totally agree people aren't monoliths, but this was not something offensive. it's not something terrible to say that you may not face this trouble in the world b/c of this one aspect of yours. that may actually be more likely to be true. there are so many other factors as well. saying this is much more nuanced with a sociological lens than boxing a racial group in and saying they can't dance, for example. the first is more likely to be true, the second isn't really a claim one can make, and while it may be funny to some (as it is with any shallow stereotype), it is offensive to some as well.

    • @vyrusnationgaming1999
      @vyrusnationgaming1999 2 года назад +2

@@onemillionpercent I agree. However most people use skin color as a monolith in our current culture, especially against white people for some reason.
I see it with others as well but for some reason white people aren't allowed to voice their opposition to it because somehow they are complicit in it.
It's not terrible to say you might not face trouble in this world because of one aspect of your.
However it is terrible to say it when it relies on your skin color.
If it relied on conscientiousness or strength of character or something that someone could actually control, then I would agree. But when it relies on making a blanket statement about all people with a certain skin color then I think it's gone a little too far and I think it's wrong.
People aren't saying that you MAY not face adversity because you are white.
They are saying you absolutely will not face adversity because you are white.
Anytime white people complain about anything they are acused of having white privilege and are just brushed off as "snowflaking" because they are complaining about injustices.
      That's not what snowflaking is.
Snowflaking is complaining about something trivial that isn't affecting your life and crying about it or throwing a tantrum.

If white liberals actually wanted to solve class racial issues.... what would they campaign on? And if minorities could move up.... they might not like the idea of paying higher taxes. And so on.... The superficial issues allow far left liberals to pretend that they really care without caring at all. They have to keep a death grip, especially, on the black vote. Actually helping inner city blacks get out of their class cycle would hurt them in the long run. Yeah we have one that we kinda forced but thats because were not like countries like France or China in which our people were native and goes back to the very beginning of the country and have a deep and complex culture thats been around for generations. Kim K for instance; she started the Kimono clothing line and faced so much backlash from the Japanese for cultural appropriation that she recanted the entire line. It’s weird asf to dress up as another culture for Halloween- u can dress as fictional characters, lady bugs, pumpkins, fairy’s etc. but it becomes weird when you start dressing up as people because it implies that you feel their culture is silly. No other countries are out there playing dress up and dressing like “Americans” for holidays. Just because you want to appreciate something doesn’t mean that you need to take it! For example, just bc someone likes my hair doesn’t mean they can touch it, just because I like how someone at work dresses doesn’t mean I should go buy the same outfit as them and wear it, it’s fucking weird.

Every single Latin race ranges from white blond hair blue eyes to black skin and kinky hair ect. So all this race separation Is more relevant in states that are less diverse I guess??? My own family is several different races: Mex, Puerto Rican, Native American Indian, Jamaican, African American, Philippino, Guamanian, and Hawaiian. All that in my immediate family Mom,Pops, brothers, sisters. CA lifestyle. ❤

I agree, although just to be precise, Portuguese (those related to the actual ethnic group of the country of Portugal) are Caucasian. They are related to the collective races originating from Europe that define "White Race" in a sense.
In contrast someone of "Brazilian descent" is more likely a mixture of multiple ethnicities (possibly multiple races) like you implied in the diversity of your background. It wouldn't be correct however to equate someone like this with "White" ("European") from a genetic perspective. It just wouldn't be consistent or useful.

Yep. And I feel like saying white people don't have a culture, but black people do is absurd because there are different black cultures throughout the world. Black "Island" culture is different from black African culture, which is different from black American culture, and everything in between. Heck American culture as a whole regardless of race is different from European culture as a whole regardless of race.
Culture has more to do with the time and place that people live, a shared general experience based on what people are exposed to and cultivate as a whole. It's just ridiculous to claim that culture is solely a shared oppressive experience.

    • @Brooque613
      @Brooque613 4 года назад +3

@@garki1369 Yeah, I was just thinking about that too. There are such distinctions between different regions within the US. Farming culture, beach culture, city culture, suburb culture, urban culture, religious culture, etc.... each of these groups has distinct art, achievements, social institutions, customs, etc. And that's regardless of race, but in areas that are primarily white it's not like these things cease to exist.
Culture can also change and grow, but people act as though culture is solely deep-rooted traditions. So cultural appropriation applies to (like the examples they gave) stuff like a native American headdress or a geisha outfit. But what about something like a kilt? That's a traditional garb worn by primarily white people and has deep-rooted cultural and family significance yet you don't hear about scotsmen getting offended if non-Scottish people wear them as costumes. It's a huge double standard and something that seems like it was initiated by white people who feel guilty for the things other white people have done in the past. That's just absurd! The atrocities inflicted on people of other ethnicities BY people of other ethnicities is also part of human history and continues to this day. Just look at the atrocities currently going on in central and south America, Africa, and Asia! People act like the US is the worst, but you first have to define what good and bad are before you start ranking these countries and races by their histories.

@Christian Smith This is a video about culture and what 'white people' ostensibly think, not genetic or geographic ancestry. Take every Irish person out of Ireland and replace them with a random mix of Slavs, Puerto Ricans and Lebanese and it would very swiftly and very distinctly not mean the same thing if you said 'I'm Irish' from then on.
It's like when some of my middle class, black American friends went to an African country to find 'their roots' and meet 'brothers' but instead found that the locals didn't see them as 'black' (my friends didn't seem to anticipate that, with almost everyone there being black they didn't really stand out as much) so much as 'American,' and mostly derided them as tourists.
My observation was more related to the fact that he brought up some 'Irish' component to in part explain how he thinks as a 'white' person, intermingling the two and implying that he had more of a passing understanding of what it is to be 'Irish' - which is why it was funny that he would use the word 'hella' in the same sentence; I didn't really assume anything so much as assign a high probability to the hypothesis that he has never visited the country of Ireland nor is he particularly - let alone 'hella' - Irish by any metric. Could totally be wrong, just guessing based off literally a single sentence.

The common description of culture in this context has little to do with art and such, but rather the "collective mental programming of the human mind which distinguishes one group of people from another" (taken from e.g. Hofstede). And in that regard The Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland already differ a lot from the rest of Europe simply because we're heavily on the feminine side of the femininity-masculinity axis (wanting to be the best (masculine) or liking what you do (feminine)).

i completely agree that a big issue with the discrimination and racism has to do with poverty and class... a lack of wealth in a certain area wears away at its social aspects through hurting the educational systems, centers that assist people in that community, etc. so then people in those communities feel alienated from other communities, because they feel that with the poor education and lack of opportunity, they can't get out of their situation.
also, i really don't know if it's my place to say this (please lmk if i'm wrong), but i feel that the way black celebrities are portrayed is actually indirectly causing issues. we're almost creating this stereotype that you can't be successful while black as an every day person, unless you're a celebrity. and you see a lot of black celebrities (mainly musicians) focusing on money... while i don't think that's wrong in and of itself, that constant theme being promoted and associated with black culture is keeping nonblack people from seeing that day-to-day black people are seriously underprivileged.
and for me, i feel that the celebrity culture as a whole (regardless of race) focuses so much on being wasteful with money because it's so focused on spending as a form of entertainment for others, something that we could use to actually help underprivileged people. again, i'm not shaming celebrities for talking about money, it's just when it's the constant theme of it promoted (because i know there are potential celebrities who don't talk all about that, they're just not as famous typically), there's something underlying in our society that is off.
anyways, yeah, i don't think that the whole issue is the celebrities' faults, but more the society we've created. so essentially, back to systemic racism.

On the Halloween thing I don’t necessarily think it would be automatically considered cultural appropriation if we’re going on the idea that cultural appropriation is disrespectful.
For fucks sake even participating in Halloween could be considered cultural appropriation because it really is an ancient Celtic thing which is a “whyte” people thing.
If dressing up as a geisha on Halloween is disrespectful then it would be disrespectful to dress up as a cat too. I always dressed up like a cat because I love cats.
And I know obviously there’s gonna be people like blah blah blah cats and humans are different and blah blah blah. Well honestly maybe to a lot of people they are highly discriminatory between humans and cats. But in my point of view which matters the most because of what I’m putting on my body. And how I interpret something. I view humans and non-humans as having and should have equal rights. I think a cat should have just as many rights as a human. And you bet your ass that if I had to choose between my cat or a stranger human I would definitely choose my cat.
So for me humans are not more special than cats and so for me it doesn’t make a difference.
What makes the difference is the INTENT behind the actions.
People often use Halloween to dress up in attire they would not normally wear and attire they find beautiful, enticing or something like that for one reason or another.
I’ve had friends dress up like prostitutes, or what they think a prostitute would dress up like because they find it alluring and sexy. And they want an excuse to dress like a slut without being made fun of. I’ve had friends that dress like princesses and queens because they find that elegant and they want to wear something like that without being turned into a joke. So like a geisha something that we would find interesting and attractive I would not really consider that cultural appropriation because if dressing up like a geisha is cultural appropriation then so is dressing up like a prostitute and so is dressing up like a queen. These are all cultural identities no matter what you dress up like. Kids dress up like cowboys - cultural appropriation. Even vampires would be cultural appropriation because the legend of vampires is a real thing. Dressing up like a dead person like a zombie or a ghost could be considered cultural appropriation especially to people who have a special connection with the spiritual world. Which is where Halloween even started.
Black Americans dressing up in traditional African clothing because it’s their heritage could also be considered cultural appropriation.
I’m white American. My heritage is Irish and Scottish and if I dress up today like something that is traditional to that culture it is cultural appropriation. Just because something is our heritage does not make it our culture. Our culture is American culture.
So I think alll all allll Americans white black Asian or whatever should really shut up about cultural appropriation.
