Sea Fishing at Porthkerry - A Nice Session!

- A busy Bristol Channel Sea Fishing session at Porthkerry, which is near Barry on the Bristol Channel. This is a mark that I used to fish all of the time but for some reason, this was my first session here in over two years, I have no idea why ha! Barry is a top South Wales Ray Fishing area, although the ground at Porthkerry is a little rougher and attracts differents species and is noted for its Smooth-hound fishing throughout the Summer months. When I was a kid, it was a great Winter Cod Fishing spot and some nice Whiting and Bass used to also turn up! When it comes to UK Shore Fishing and South Wales Sea Fishing in general, this place is right up there when it comes to raw beauty! Porthkerry Park is well worth a visit, lots to see and a great day out!
Thank you for watching, it is very much appreciated!

Another great scenic relaxing video Gareth. You certainly have a beautiful countryside up there. You had a good mix of fish on a stunning sunny day. What more could you ask for. You are right, back in the late 70's early 80's i used to get whiting around 3lb and over from the famous Dungeness beach. Sadly no more. Look forward to the next one. 👍👍

Yes I remember Redwick back in the 80s! Sea Angler magazine used to run articles about it every winter cos it was so good for cod, and you’re right, whiting were considered pests. Great times.
Yes they were great times and I miss them! Ha yes I remember reading those articles about Redwick in Sea Angler magazine, wish I'd have kept those magazines now! Hopefully one day the place will make a bit of a comeback. Thanks Stu 👍👍

Awesome video mate, you definitely make great calming videos and I can’t wait to the next instalment. My wife is now asking has Gareth done a video so thanks for all your hard work and beautiful videos. 👌🏼
Thank you Mike, I appreciate it. The sunrise that morning was pretty special and so I was able to get some decent footage of it. Nice little session and a bit of fresh air, I was happy with that. Pleased to hear your wife is also enjoying the videos, can't fault it at all! Cheers mate, have a good weekend 👍👍
We all look forward to your weekly posts. Very calming watch. I'm laid up with sciatica at the moment so can't get out for a couple more weeks at least. I like the Knap but never fished over that side.
Sorry to hear that Gareth, I hope you make a speedy recovery. I had it once, what an unpleasant experience that was! Yes Porthkerry is a nice venue, back in the day it was a top winter Cod spot, I remember those frosty mornings very well! Thank you for watching, take it easy! 👍👍

Hey Gareth I’m James from Swansea but live in Pembrokeshire now, only found your channel a couple of days ago and been watching a few of your videos and I’m enjoying it, only started fishing about 18 months ago after I left the ambulance service after 14 years last 8 of them working frontline 999, so being outdoors is something I love to do and fishing has helped me with my mental health since starting, unfortunately down my neck of the woods not many want to fish with people and prefer to keep themselves to themselves, keep up the good work buddy and might seen you out there one day and I’ll pop over and say hi.
Hi James, thank you for the comment, I'm pleased to hear that you're enjoying the videos. Well done on your frontline 999 service, a very important role and I thank you for that. Yes definitely, fishing is great for the mind, it's a form of therapy that usually does the trick. It's just nice being next to the water and any fish that turn up are a bonus. Pembrokeshire is a lovely part of the world, I haven't done much fishing down that way but hopefully I can visit more often. Cheers for watching, take care 👍👍
@@riversidewithme well mate when your down your welcome to come and share a spot with me let me know when your about, tight lines buddy.

I feel robbed !!!!!! 😡
You didn't miss any bites! That's my favourite bit of your videos! Grrrrrrrr.
Hahahaaa just kidding, another cracking video Gareth, love the baby conger you've been getting lately. To think they grow into flesh ripping power houses is amazing, like holding a baby raptor 😅
Definately not fishing for the catch but fishing for the mind. Keep em coming Gareth you're smashing it.
Haha well I actually did miss a few fish but I didn't include in the video as it would have been too long, I try and keep the videos to around 30 minutes or thereabouts. Although maybe I should leave everything in. Yes definitely, with Autumn just around the corner the bigger Congers will be moving in, October and November tend to be great months for them . Oh yes, I go fishing as it's my drug if choice, good for the old mind and any fish that turn up are a bonus. Cheers Rob, take care 👍👍
Another cracking vid , wat can I say ,😉

Hi gareth sorry to be a pain but never caught rays from the shore have you got any tips that might help what to look for and venues etc as I dont have a Great cast maybe about 130 yards or so anyway keep the videos coming mate bye for now Mark from Devon.
@markpowell7572 Hi Mark. If you're visiting Wales and want a Ray, then I would suggest fishing either at The Knap or Friars Point, both are Barry marks. The Knap is probably the more popular choice and not that I'm an expert but I would suggest a biggish tide, it always fishes better when the sun starts to set, so an evening tide would be better. Sandeel, squid and bluey...these baits usually do the trick. If fishing Friars, the smaller/medium size tides are probably better as the current can be a little strong on the bigger ones. In general though, Rays prefer a clean sandy or shingle bottom and the baits I've mentioned above will work everywhere. Squid/Sandeel cocktail is always a good choice. Hope that helps 👍👍
@@riversidewithme thanks again gareth 👍👍
Good session Gar, thank you for all the pleasure you give us 👍
You're welcome Paul. Yes it was a nice session in fairness, nice to see a couple of different species. Cheers for watching, take care 👍👍

The sunrise shots at the beginning really set mood for this video, a relaxing watch with great scenery, well done on the fish as well, nice rockling and bass 👍
I’m off up to the Menai straight next week to try my luck 🎣
All the best pal
Thank you Nigel, appreciated as always. The sunrise was beautiful wasn't it, couldn't fault it at all. Porthkerry is a lovely place, an old favourite of mine and it's a pleasure just being there. Another great video Gareth, absolutely love your uploads. Nit abbas sessio at all especially for daytime. Looks like there are kenty of ankle breakers there though👍👍🎣🎣
Thank you Dylan, I appreciate it. Yes it's not the easiest underfoot although the fishing can be good on its day. We used to fish it a lot during Winter for the Cod but nowadays it's become more of a summer mark I think. Not sure where I'll be next, I'd like to hit the Gower but depends on tides etc. Cheers mate, enjoy the bank holiday 👍👍
Great video thank you.
You're welcome Robert. Thank you for watching, take care 👍👍
Looks brilliant where you are Gareth heading to Cornwall and Devon in a couple of weeks keep up the great videos mate much appreciated tight lines mate 🎣🎣🎣🎣

Another great video mate two things about that video the action and must admit I’d love to own that house in the wood anyway keep them coming
Thank you mate. Lovely place isn't it, just nice being there. Ha yes, that house is impressive, imagine living there! Nice little session in fairness, good to see some different species. Cheers as always, take care 👍👍
another great vid gareth yep all about the day out and catching what is there in front of you and enjoying some fresh air . and yes mate brixham is all about marks but you are right it is a different world tight lines mate .
Thanks bud, nice to hear from you again. Yes definitely, just nice being out there isn't it, spending a few hours next to the water. I can't wait to get back down to Brixham, we used to 3 or 4 times a year but that's not possible now as everything is so much more expensive. Sad to see Berry Head is taking a battering, the recent public protection order seems to be having a limited affect only and the locals are not happy, you can't blame them. Cheers as always, take care 👍👍
Wonderful video Gareth you make fishing look easy, from a Newport boy, redwick my favourite spot 10 pound cod one frosty morning.
Thank you Royston, appreciated as always. Ah yes, Redwick is a great mark isn't it, hopefully it will produce some nice fish this winter. Well done on the 10lb Cod, that's a cracker. My best is 8 pound 6oz, I caught that one down at the Pink House a few years ago. Cheers for watching, take care 👍👍
You're a very humble guy Gareth, thanks for the video. Right where l take my dog? She loves it there !!!
Thank you Paul, I appreciate it. Lovely spot isn't it, I can understand why you take your Dog walking there. Cheers for watching, enjoy the weekend 👍👍
Its great there , up the city
Lovely spot isn't it 👍
Great place and a place I never thought of visiting until now. You are the eel man without doubt. Missing the smaller rod you usually use to land the conger, nice relaxing video though.
Thank you Jeff, appreciated as always. Yes it's a lovely mark is Porthkerry, it can produce some good fishing on its day. Those small congers are definitely following me around at the moment, they are sticking to me like glue ha! The cheapy old boat rod will no doubt be back in action very soon! Cheers for watching, take care 👍👍
Thanks Gareth, another cracking video, great photography as usual and stunning landscapes too.
Perfect for relaxing on the sofa of a Sunday evening.
Porthkerry looks like a gorgeous place mate, and ironically, as I was watching, I couldn't help thinking how lucky you were to have it to yourself! Within a minute I could hear loads of kids larking about in the background and saw what looked like the Grim Reaper walking past in the frame😂
Still a great video though mate and I can see a lot of work went into it.
A good mixed bag all in all, and I agree, the Rockling is a stunning looking fish, well worth putting up with the eels destroying your rigs to catch that, also the lovely Bass. Great to see your enthusiasm for returning everything, that's what first drew me to the channel, you enthusing over the humble dogfish. Everyone slags them but you appreciate them, as do I and I absolutely love looking at them, especially their eyes, they are a truly stunning fish too. Yes they also wreck rigs but that's not their fault, they just do what they're supposed to do, eat and breed.
No cheapy old boat rod again I see Gareth, I hope you haven't broken it or even worse, given or thrown it away! It's a lucky mascot and has been punching well above its weight lately.
Once again, thanks for the video mate, I was three days late in watching it as I was away working and wanted to save it until I got home.
Good luck to you mate, keep em coming.
Thank you Steve. Yes, Porthkerry is a beautiful location, just a nice place to be. Usually it's very quiet and you hardly see anyone but during the summer holidays it can get busy, especially when the sun is shining! Rockling are beautiful fish aren't they and can grow quite large, the one I had was quite small in comparison. Yeah that's it, any fish makes me happy, I don't take my fishing too seriously now, those days have gone for me, I just enjoy being out there. A doggy, a conger, anything wil do ha. Not sure where I'll be next, will get the tide book out and assess the situation, although I wouldn't mind hitting the Gower if time permits! Hope all is good with you, cheers for watching 👍👍
A big thumbs-up mate keep at it
Thank you David, I appreciate it. Hopefully more to come soon. Take it easy 👍👍
Aberavon is seeing quite a few small eyed rays atm, few small bass and the odd hound.
Nice to hear that a few fish are turning up down Aberavon, good stuff. Thanks Ethan 👍👍
Lovely relaxing video Gareth. Brilliant fishing and filming as usual. Looking forward to next one. Have a good bank holiday! 🤗
Thank you Patricia, appreciated as always, glad you enjoyed it. Nice morning, the sunrise was a good to start to the session. You too, hope you have a good one, enjoy! 👍👍
Cheers Gareth for another brilliant video, I really liked the 3 bearded rockling, haven’t managed to catch one myself yet but heres hoping. Porthkerry looks amazing, great background for the video thankyou.
Thank you Ronnie, I appreciate it. Yes lovely fish aren't they, that's the first one I've caught this year, always a welcome site. Porthkerry is a great mark and it can produce some nice fish on its day, although it's just a nice place to be. Have a good weekend 👍👍
another fantastic video gareth , hope your all well mate . take care on them rocks mate
Thank you Tony, appreciated as always. Nice place is Porthkerry and it can fish well on its day, used to be a good winter Cod spot. I'm good thanks mate, hope you are too. Take care 👍👍
Trying not to look at the comments as I type. I've not watched it yet. Just had a notification this was uploaded and I got bloody excited 😅
Haha I hope you managed to succeed! It was a nice morning in fairness and it was great to be back at Porthkerry again! Cheers Rob, take it easy 👍👍
Morning Gareth!!
Another real enjoyable watch buddy....agree with you that those congers are definately following you around, great to see a little rockling too & of course, a stunning bass.
Was great to hear you talking about the whiting fishing back in the day....we used to go down to Penarth, alongside the pier at night....it'd be freezing & foggy but the rods wouldn't stop 'rattling'....great days, sadly long gone.
Anyways mate, back to the grind, getting ready for the Apple harvest & winter planting.
Have a great week ahead & look forward to the next trip....Jon.
Thank you Jon, always appreciated. Yes it was nice to see a few different species and of course my fishing trips wouldn't be the same without those small Congers ha! Ah yes the good old days, the cold and foggy nights, the non stop Whiting rattles, I remember them very well. Such a shame isn't it, I'd love to see them make a comeback but I just think they've been commercially fished out up this way. Still loads further south though which is strange, when I go to Brixham during the winter it's usually a fish a cast. Good luck with the apple harvest, that sounds like good fun. Talking of apples, I juiced some this morning for breakfast, very nice too! Cheers as always, have a good weekend 👍👍
it was interesting watching you film your vlogs, i was the guy fishing just down the beach from you, i had the hound 40 minutes after high and missed two other bites. i fish porthkerry a lot and always favour smaller tides as it gets busy with anglers on bigger tides. the last few years it has got very busy down there with beach gowers trying to avoid the crowds of barry island, maybe if i see you vlogging again i'll pop over and say hi.
Ah that was you then Damian. Yeah pop over for a chat next time, no problem at all. Well done on the hound, I saw you pull something in. Thanks for the info, I shall bear that in mind and will give the smaller tides a go there if that means less people, I prefer that! Lovely mark isn't it, an old favourite of mine and I hope to be back there in the Autumn. Cheers for watching, tight lines 👍👍
Thanks Gareth for mentioning us all, I love this channel, those stones looked like real ankle breakers. These days you must spend most of the time replying to people's comments, seeing how the channel is doing so well. Hope you have a lovely Bank Holiday, all the best from South West Wales 👍.
Thank you mate, appreciated as always. Haha yes, replying to the comments does take a lot of time but I'm quite happy to do it, no problem. The stones at Porthkerry are a little tricky underfoot, I'm just a glutton for punishment ha! Lovely mark in fairness, something special about it. You too, have a good one and enjoy! Cheers 👍👍
Gareth, another cracking video. Would you be able to show how you bait your hooks in a future video? You must have the knack as I'm nowhere near as successful as you 😂 Really appreciate the effort that you put into the videos.
Thank you Roger, much appreciated. Ok I will try and remember to show that, I often forget to show things when I'm filming ha! I guess I was lucky that there were a few fish in front of me during this session and it made a nice change as I often blank 😂. Cheers for watching, enjoy the weekend 👍👍
Another cracking video again gareth mate...thoroughly enjoyed watching the scenery and you landing a few fish too..and you are right mate i used to catch big whitting off cardiff foreshore back in the 90s sometimes I'd run out of worm so i would use cut up whitting to catch whitting lol
Thank you Nathan, appreciated as always. Ah yes great days weren't they, I do miss the Whiting around our way. Strangely there are still plenty further west and south during the winter months, I can't get my head around that. You never know, they might make a bit of a comeback one day. Cheers mate, take care 👍👍
Take care Gareth I look forward to watching your next video mate
Thanks Gareth cracking video as usual on my old stomping ground many an hour spent there. On to the next one take care mate 👍
You're welcome Christopher, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. I bet you had some great times on that beach, cracking mark isn't it. Hope all is well, take care 👍👍
Yes a great mark and some great times thanks for bringing back the memories. But now I have moved to Loughor and there is some great fishing in that area to.
@christopherbroad Yes definitely, you have some great fishing marks down there where you live now 👍
