    I planted a tiny basil plant in my backyard place where my turtles once lived and its growing like a weed (possibly turtle poop made it grow fast?). I live in san diego so the ground is often cracked up and no plants can live besides my aloe vera. I have an underground pipe that puts water underground near roots so the ground is normally dry/cracked up but the plants are flourishing in the desert enviorment

      Yeah Basil once started, act like weeds. Some growers caution outright planting it in your garden bed as it could easily overtake it if you're not careful or keep them segregated.

    Why not just plant the seeds individually straight into the pots? That way there's no danger of damaging/killing them when you transplant the seedlings. If any of them fail to germinate, you can just use the ready made pot of compost for something else.

    • @EQOAnostalgia
      @EQOAnostalgia 8 лет назад +3

      +EASYTIGER10 Different strokes for different folks. Gardening really comes down to preference with a lot of the steps involved.

    • @matthewwang5602
      @matthewwang5602 8 лет назад +8

      +EASYTIGER10 Hey, the idea is if you plant them in their final resting place directly, you risk having seeds being bunched up too close which will prevent growth (ultimately forcing you to deroot them at a later stage of the life cycle which is more dangerous - potentially damaging). This is just to control for adequate spacing.

    • @EASYTIGER10
      @EASYTIGER10 8 лет назад +6

      matthew maccalear But that's why I suggested planting seeds individually - yes, one seed to each pot. I did my tomatoes from seed this way this year and have a 100% success rate. Every seed I planted is now a healthy plant. But if any of the single seeds had failed to germinate, I'd simply have used the ready filled pots for something else. Its a zero waste method.

    • @lilsangy
      @lilsangy 8 лет назад +8

      then you introduce a risk of a seed that doesn't grow or one that is weak etc
      by growing all of the seeds in one spot, you can isolate the strong ones that do grow and transplant them =)

      You can leave them in the container but I would advise only one plant per container or else multiple plants will fight against each other for nutrients. Also make sure the container is large enough to start with. Also make sure there are drainage holes in the container as the roots will drown and rot in sodden soil.

      Basil needs light to germ, you should not cover it with soil. Also you can't just give the same amount of water every day, it depends on how dry your soil is. Imagine its a sunny day and more water will transpire in comparison to a cloudy cold day where almost all the water will stay in the soil. Also Basil likes it warm.

      Either more sunlight or if you want to use an indoor lamp it must be one that is designed for plant growing - red lights or ordinary bulbs will not work. Plants need a range of light wavelengths to grow - from infra red up to ultra violet (uv) light. Google 'Plant Light' for more information. Keep safe.

    Separate seeds from spent flower heads with blender or shake in bag. Strain & blow chaff away.
    Cover self polilnating plants, like basil, with small hole mesh bag to reduce cross polination & bug infestation & shake plant to help pollination. Pass the word.

      HI Lidia. You can plant them directly. I start mine early indoors in trays (I grow so many flowers and plants that trays are a lot easier to move and handle than loads of pots) and then transplant them when the weather warms up. This prolongs the growing season. Keep safe.

      Sorry to hear you had problems. I dont give specific advice in the video as the climate varies vastly around the world and what would be right for one region would be totally wrong for another. Thats why I say follow the growing instructions on the seed packet for your region.
      Plant the seeds as shown in the video. Keep the soil moist (but not wet) and keep warm (20 degC). Make sure you only use seeds from a reputable supplier. The plants like full sun.
