Do NATO allies have the strength, patience, and unity to support Ukraine for as long as it takes to win the war and defeat Russia? According to Poland’s Foreign Minister, Radek Sikorski, the answer is a resounding yes. On GZERO World, Sikorski sat down with Ian Bremmer on the sidelines of NATO’s 75th-anniversary summit in Washington, DC, to talk about NATO’s strength, Putin’s missteps, and why continuing to send crucial military and economic assistance to Kyiv is a top priority for western allies and the future of NATO.
“Ukraine is heroically defending us before this evil man at a cost to us of less than 1% of our GDP,” Sikorski explains, “We can afford this."
Sikorski says that despite rogue alliance members like Hungary’s Victor Orbán, NATO remains united and is “back to basics” in its original mission of repelling an aggressive Russia. Bremmer and Sikorski also discuss Ukraine’s ongoing challenges, such as ensuring Kyiv can keep sending weapons and new troops to the front lines. Sikorski remains optimistic that Ukraine will prevail and win the war, with the help of Western allies and NATO, particularly Poland, which has taken in almost a million Ukrainian refugees and is helping train troops to NATO standards.
Bremmer pushed Sikorski on his conviction that Ukraine would win, pointing out that a potential second Donald Trump administration could severely limit further military assistance for Kyiv and the sheer amount of force required to get all of Ukraine’s territory back just isn’t available, but Sikorski held firm in his conviction.
“There is never a shortage of pocket Chamberlains willing to give up other people’s land or freedom for their own peace of mind,” Sikorski said, “I think we can win this one.”

Mr Bemmer's understanding of who is eligible for mobilization, who is fleeing, and why isn't quite accurate. The 27yo-now-25yo draft limit was ostensibly there to preserve some sort of natural population churn and avoid a future demographic crisis, not because it's somehow unpopular to recruit 18yo but popular to recruit 48yo. Men who hide and have fled are not necessarily young. More likely they are above the median age. Go to any war cemetery in Ukraine now and you'll see the birth dates are overwhelming in the 1970s and 80s.
Also, it would benefit Ukraine if our neighbours would help house and train those Ukrainians abroad in western Ukraine. Having 4+ million people outside the country is a huge drag on the economy, whereas building housing and providing job training in Ukraine would all contribute to much-needed economic growth.

Calling the previous Poland's government far right is a stretch. They were right of center. They were not anti European, they just put the interests of Poland ahead of EU delusional wokeness. Reasonable people can disagree on their policy, but labeling them far right is just disingenuous. Their resistance to North African and Middle Eastern immigration is proving to be correct seeing how much social ills those "doctors and engineers" are causing in countries that accepted them.
Similarly their "russophobia" turns out to be justified.

Sikorski is completely demented even by standards of Polish politicians. The war is lost by Ukraine, but people like him will always be in a state of denial. Russian objective after the initial faze of this war remains the same: attrite Ukrainian army to the level when it simply collapses. Russians are well on the way to achieving this goal. It's not about capturing Bakhmut, Odessa or Kiev. No army, nothing will remain in Zelenskyy hands. It's not only quantity, but a quality of the troops that matters. Most trained and motivated Ukrainian soldiers are populating endless cemeteries across Ukraine, decomposing on the spot where they perished or trying to survive after being crippled. People kidnapped off the streets by Zelenskyy thugs have zero motivation to die for him. More over when they manage to escape to Russians or surrender they willingly provide them with intelligence on Ukrainian positions, ammo depots etc. They consider Zelenskyy a tormentor and a war criminal.

    • @Norbert2470
      @Norbert2470 Месяц назад

Consider this: if the Russians didn't let themselves be ruled by a bunch of thieves, the Russian population could have a better standard of living than the Norwegians: a public swimming pool and a library in every little town, super public infrastructure even in the countryside, top schools and universities, cheap top-class medical care, etc. given the many natural recources in the country.
Instead, Putin's group has been dividing the country's wealth among themselves for 22 years (estimated at about 1,000,000,000,000$ = 1 Trillion $ to date). For dictators it is important that the population is quiet while the country is being stolen from.
If now the neighboring country with the "brother nation", which speaks partly the same language, slowly frees itself from corruption and develops to a free, open and democratic society, which has besides a higher standard of living than the Russians, then this dictatorship is times at least endangered.
Putin is probably afraid that the Russians will wake up, march in their millions to Red Square and hang him from a lamppost.
So what does a dictator do who fears that the people might turn against him: He invents an enemy. He creates a narrative in which one is threatened from the outside in order to distract the people. Then you stage a conflict that provides the justifications for the crimes you want to commit.

If Russia has an advantage in drones, tanks, artillery, EW, long range fires, aviation, manpower, ISR, industrial capacity, tactical nuclear weapons. Why did the war last almost three years and is still going on?
Why did Russia loose so much occupied territory?
Why did Russia loose more than 500.000 soldiers?
Why did Rusia loose more than 2.000 main battle tanks, thousands of armoured vehicles, one third of its Black Sea Fleet ...
Maybe the advantage Russia had in the beginning is shrinking at a fast pace. If so, Ukraine can win.
The Soviet Union lost 15.000 troops in Afghanistan in 10 years. In the end the Soviet Union lost their Afghanistan war (against guys with beards in sandales). Russia lost its first Chechen war despite all the advantages.
Now, Russia has lost 500.000 + troops in Ukraine in less than 3 years. Think about that! Equipment loses are probably 50x higher than in Afghanistan. This doesn´t look like an army that surely wins wars.
