- They’re the children of one of England’s best-ever footballers, and today James and Gemma Owen open up for the first time about how James has grown up with a disease that has left him clinically blind. James was born with Stargardt disease, which he was diagnosed with at 8. It causes a degeneration of the retina, and he will be discussing how this has affected his day-to-day life, and how he’s finally accepted the disease. Gemma will reveal how she’s supported her brother through everything, and reminisce on her summer of love on last year's Love Island.

Finally someone has talked about this awful eye disease, but what a shame it took someone "famous" to speak out about it when there hundreds of people with the same thing!! My daughter , Claire was diagnosed with Stargarts disease in her 20s (despite seeing several Opticians over the years!) but it has never stopped her doing the thing she loves. Now in her early 50s, she has brought us 2 children, is a Manager in Social Services, runs 5k and 10k races, having completed in the Great North Run, competes in Lake swimming, eg, Windemere,, Bala Lake, Salford Quays to name a few.. She just carries on with life and does as much as she can. Naturally we are all very proud of her. I think James needs to see and meet people like my daughter and see how many postitive life can be,
definitely, it can be so frustrating that people only begin to care and raise awareness about a disease when a celebrity has it

Both these beautiful grown up children of Michael are so beautiful. The big man looks like his dad, very calm, soft-spoken, very well done, good job. Wow!!! Thanks so much James. You’ve really helped me by sharing. I’m 39 and for the last 3 years I’ve had problems with my walking due to chronic pain. I can walk but with lots of pain some days. I’ve had to find other ways to get myself through and your story has really helped me. Thank you James

What an amazing sibling relationship. James, sight is only one part of you and you still have 4 of your 5 senses . My father has a progressive visual impairment and now is completely blind however makes the most of what he has and I am sure a beautiful young man like yourself will do the same and gave a fantastic life. I know this is mad but they way he talks and looks and moves his eyes and looks at the women it’s as if he has the ability to see. It’s remarkable
The most prominent symptom is a blurry or blind spot in the center of the visual field. This makes tasks like reading, driving, recognizing faces, and any other activities that require detailed vision difficult or impossible. But he probably can make out some things.
Yeah it’s a skill many blind people have. To socially fit in having the ability to have there eyes follow sounds extremely accurately. However it’s important to understand that only 10-15% of people are fully blind with no sight. Being blind is on a spectrum and the level of sight a person has is unique to each individual person. What makes a person blind is ofc there poor sight that is a given. But it’s also it’s often also about how that poor sight effects your Dayton day life and quality of life when looked at on the spectrum of being sighted.

Most legally blind people do this , most other people don't understand blindness. You don't see all black. It's severe incurable restriction of light and colour and depth.
@@ha8236Thanks for explaining this. I have worn glasses since I was 4 years old 66 years ago, so thought I knew all about eyes, but never heard of this before. If blind or blurred in middle vision is it possible for James Owen or others to see out of sides of their eyes, perhaps with the aid of contact lenses? I just wondered?

His central vision is mainly affected. But still considered legally blind. So he has Blurred Center: It's as if someone smudged or blurred the middle of that photograph. So, while you might see the edges clearly (like the background or scenery), the main subject in the center is unclear or distorted. Over time, that smudge might turn into a darker spot, like a stain on the photo. This means that no matter how hard you try, you can't see the main subject. But, you still see the surroundings clearly.

If you watched the video, you’d know there’s no cure to his condition. It’s a condition that actually worsens over time
