Sealing Stamped Concrete - Don't Make These mistakes

  • Newbie DIYer here and this weeks project was to reseal our concrete stamped patio!
Like most of my DIY projects it all began when I got a quote from a professional. After hearing the quote and realizing that it really isn't that hard to do and the materials cost less than a quarter of the quoted price I decided to give it a try.
Here is how I resealed our stamped concrete patio along with some of the mistakes I made along the way.

To make the sealing coating an even thickness perhaps you could spray what you can reach with the roller with extension and back roll the sprayed surfare to remove the excess and do this for the entire patio always with a wet edge to not get lines. Sort of what the contractors usually do. Take care and thanks

For stamped concrete spraying is the only way to go. Put it on very thin as she mentions, but also it's best to spray in a random circular motion so you don't get any visual spray patterns.
    Looks great!

Professional here: Do NOT roll stamped concrete, as it'll likely go on too thick which leads to cloudiness and delamination later. Always use a solvent based sprayer so you can build up the layers thinly. Use 15% acrylic over 25%, do two layers. Every few years if you have a buildup you can do a xylene refresh (spray xylene from your sprayer instead of adding more acrylic). Your bubbles are likely caused from the heat, and bubbles don't always show up right away. Always seal in the morning before the concrete heats up to avoid bubbling.

Seal doesn't fade away in one year unless you use the cheap one from home depot or menards. Get the good stuff from your concrete company or contractor supplier.

The sealer I used costs $150 I think the people that poured our patio may have used cheap stuff when they sealed it.

@@MapleFarmer If the sealer is water based, it will needs to be reapplied after a year as the sun and rain/snow wears it off. Lacquer based sealers are thicker and last 3-5 years depending on exposure.

I don’t know if anyone has said this yet, but “240V” is basically 250V, so pretty much anything labeled from 220-260V that you’ll ever need will work with (in terms of tools) at any voltage in that range will all mean the same thing, all you need to check for then is the Amperage the device requires. The required Amperage for the device must be lower than the rating on that breaker. Other than that, most things in the 200s are good to go (except anything that says “208V” or similar oddball numbers, then you need to check and compare the required and available phases, whole different story there, but that’s really just mostly for Japanese machinery pre-90s.”
I could be incorrect on some of that, but 220-250 is almost always gonna be the same (2-pole breaker)

    • @ATG19534
      @ATG19534 11 месяцев назад

Yes, this. All the different plugs and outlets are intended to prevent users from overloading the amperage. That said, if the tractor outlet matched, that is probably the easiest solution anyway.
The real pro tip I learned is to pour out of those 5 gallon buckets rotated 180 degrees, so the spout is on the top half of the lid.

The dryer voltage is compatible, and the same, just different designations. but the prongs might not be because there are several different style, At one time they were called 220V, then 230V, then 240V, so now they are called 250V.

Instead of spraying or using a roller, a 10/12 inch soft yard brush can be used. It may take a little longer, but its easier to put the sealer on evenly and you can get into all the peaks and troughs.

Don't listen to the person above me. It's water based and will not eat away at a plastic bucket, the sprayer or anything else for that matter. Only 2 part epoxy will eat a plastic bucket that isnt thermo resistant. If you don't mix the epoxy right it will react and eat the bucket if you don't use thermo resistant.

Been going through hell trying to fix the sealer on my 5 yr old stamped concrete patio.. made every mistake you can think of.. bubbling, applying when too cold, applying too hot. Bubbling with roller l, wrong sprayer -_-.. xylene will smooth out bubbles and milking, but be sure to use a respirator. This year, I'm going to strip it and reseal. For your sprayer, do you just toss it when done? Or did you clean it somehow to reuse? Thanks!
