It was either 45 or 46 years ago, as an Apprentice Mate, I left that dock (or one nearby), my first winter of a career at sea. I had one of the coldest night cargo watches ever and I still remember the sound of the ice cakes going by in the river to this day. Frequent watcher, first time commenter here. Tim, I just wanted to take a second to say how much I appreciate you and your work on this channel. I have a small (to you) 35 foot twin engine vessel I keep on Lake Michigan. I have found the way you talk through your thought processes as you are underway, give helpful tips on VHF etiquette, explain how little guys can stay out of the big guys way SO INCREDIBLY useful. Not to mention all of the tips you give on handling in tight quarters (without having to scream at any of your crew--which my wife has come to appreciate) as, really, although the stakes are bigger for you--the forces on the boat remain largely the same. Thank you for doing what you do. Keep it up and maybe we'll catch up to you out there somewhere. :)
Tim, you are so right! I am at home, snuggled under a fleece blanket on the sofa watching this video on my big screen TV and from my point of view the scenery of a cold, foggy day looks beautiful! :-)

It is great Tim! Hot cup of coffee, snow on the ground, big screen (70") with a tug chugin' along the cold foggy river across on the other side of the US.. BEAUTIFUL! You think it is rare that folks are good at what they like or like what it is they do? Gosh, at 70 now, I always thought it was the other way around.. I have always been good with my hands and worked as a mechanic, carpenter and did cable maintenance/ troubleshooting for the phone company and loved each and every thing I did. I would still be doing one of those things now if my body was still listening to me.. This was Fun Tim.. thanks again..
Hi Tim. I'm watching your Video's for a long time now. I'm from The Netherlands and own a little 2 engine boat. I learn a lot from listening too you and i try implementing things u say. Thanks for the video! Brought back some good memories from the west coast, South Bay of San Diego and the Portages chatter on the tug radio. It was a great life for a young man working on the water back in the 70’s. Here’s happiness to in the new year!

I never get sick of "dead air" on a marine-type video - there's no such thing. I also appreciate the detail you provide in terms of maneuvers, communications, etc. Remember, many of us are landlubbers and can't get enough of these type of videos. Especially those of us who left maritime environments for deserts or mountains!
Tim my 1st thought was how beautiful the views were. Wish I was there. I love this kind of weather. I'm on the Dead air side. Let it run!!! I can watch hours of this stuff! Merry belated Christmas Tim, Dalton & Danny and your families!
I love seeing "Boat life" with the view from the water. I grew up in St. Paul Minn area, and as a kid though it was neat to see all that water traffic as we zipped by it going to where we needed to go.... Love seeing what you do, and thank you for the company that lets you share this treat with us... Please just let your cam's run, as the longer the vid the more we get to see of the rive side...
Shout out to your boss and you. This Missouri country hick used to watch the bars lights about 3 miles away on the Mississippi from Missouri side when I was doing chores. Lol it was Scary. Thank you for all the great info
Great view of my old crew/rowing stomping grounds from college. Our boathouse was not too far from where you are/were. Merry Christmas and happy new year.
Cavitation is a fascinating subject with serious physics behind it. I am a hydraulics engineer, and have seen valves and piping eroded away from the inside from the energy created by the tiny bubbles collapsing. There is another interesting phenomenon called “sono-luminescence” where when the bubbles collapse, they give off a purplish glow. Have some colleagues who ran an experiment showing this with a hydraulic circuit in a Lexan body and the glow is visible. I think they put the video on RUclips somewhere. They brag about creating their hydraulic lightbulb. Really enjoy everything you share with us. Happy Holidays
WOW Brian! That is amazing! I have sworn at certain times that the quick water behind the tug had a slight blueish glow. I didn't realize it was more than my imagination! Very cool! Thank you for watching and Happy New Year. CUOTO
Happy New Year Captain Tim & Crew. Probably the best description of cavitation, steam entropy & enthalpy I have ever heard. Something that is made to sound very complicated by engineers, you broke it down to the real nuts and bolts of the science! As usual you make it enjoyable for us all.........Regards Tim, from a retired refinery employee from Port Reading..............
Happy new year Tim, if people don’t like long videos they can always fast forward thru the unwanted sections, at least those of us that enjoy even just watching the boat moving and you talking and interacting with your crew and equipment can still get the content. thanx Captain. All the best to you and yours. CUOTO
Enjoying the channel. My father and I are "dead air" fan's, so please keep them going. BTW, dad's a WWII Merchant Mariner, his brother worked boats for Moran, IOT and SONAT so we're right at home. Thank you and happy New Year.
I miss working on boats! From what I was taught, 3 and 5 blade screws cavitate less than 4 blade screws! It's more than just a vibration, those little bubbles shot peen the edges of the blades! Keep the format as it is, big things never move fast! Happy New Year!
Appreciate that you share your profession and explaining your reasoning behind things. We're always asked to put ourselves in other's shoes to have empathy, but that's neigh impossible without transparency and a fuller understanding of the conditions they're operating under. You're a prime example of what we need more of!
Hey from Tampa-St.Pete. It's right at 80 degrees, sunny and clear down here today....this video reminds me of WHY I retired to Florida!! As much as I like the N. East, I don't miss being cold. Thanks for taking us along! Tim, we'll watch whatever you post. It's all fascinating to me.
Tim: Love your philosophical observations ("Most of us are not good at what we love to do... or not love what we are good at"). When you run out of comment, please keep the cameras rolling. The Hudson River is beautiful south (and north) of Albany. Silence & scenery rolling by is therapeutic, especially viewing on a large screen. No such thing as "dead air" on a moving tugboat. Get that though out of your head! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Having the honor of being a quest on a few tug boats trips I'm always impressed by the forward thinking of every move as well as the particular personality that can deal with hour upon hour of slow movement... God bless !!!!
Capt'n Tim, Howdy; Happy Festivus back to you and the crew. Nice video, always enjoy your verbal walkthroughs. What "dead air" chucklin' Always sometin' to see ifin ya knows where to looks. LOL.
It's never dead air Tim, it's great to hear your commenary and musings during the less evenful parts of your transits - this is why we're here! All the best and seasons greetings, great to see your channel is flourishing - great community you're building here. Take care & CUOTO 9 (edit: really cool, you can hear the beat frequency of the unsynchronized engines on the recording)
Wow these are great videos, thank you captain! I live in this area and love the Hudson and Mohawk rivers. I miss seeing the barges and tugs on the Mohawk River and the ones that used to ply the waters of the Champlain canal and lake. I should have pursued a maritime career, especially on inland waters as I think it would have been a good fit as I am not a 9 to 5 guy. Thanks to these videos I can live a little vicariously through these great Mariners lol. Stay safe on the waters, and thank you for bringing us the goods we need 👍🇺🇸
Capt Tim, this video...and your overall format are perfect! We so much appreciate your taking us along - and the caring explanations you share... you're an excellent instructor. Wishing you a wonderful 2022!
I thought about getting a mariners license when I retired from the Navy in 2003, but took a different path. I miss some things about being at sea. I'm 3 years away from retiring for good. So I think I chose the right direction for myself. Enjoy your videos and can reflect back on my 21 year Naval career with pride.
Hey Tim , nice going. Awesome big again. Dead air video we all can go fast forward. We have the same weather here in The Netherlands. I’m curled next to the fire place checking your story telling. I wish you and your crew an super good problem free 2022. Cuoto 2022!
Just want to wish you a Happy New Year and many more. I grew up in NYC, my father worked in Bush Terminal in Brooklyn when Brooklyn had a commercial waterfront, hence I knew about tugs and barges, especially railroad floats, back in those days every RR serving the city had a fleet of steam tugs. Remember riding the Erie ferry to Hoboken and the Staten Island Ferry from Brooklyn where we lived. I was a Coast Guard officer based on Staten Island and Governor's Island, later I taught at NY Maritime, maybe you should draw attention to the state Maritime academies in NY, Mass, Maine, Texas, and CA, these offer good educational opportunities and often are free or almost free and unlike a lot of schools, most all grads end up with a job. I am always in awe of your docking skills, yeah, I can dock a twin screw ship with CS props and a bow thruster that weights 2500 tons but you have a barge ten times that size and handle it like a baby carriage, wow!
Thank you very much for watching and for your kind words Henry. I have covered the academies in other videos and am very proud to be part of many other their curriculum. Happy New Year. CUOTO
Hi Tim seasons greetings!!!!!!! On the UK canal system built before railways to haul goods, the barges are longer than the canal is wide. So they incorporated Winding hole's not to be confused with winding holes and the difference is in the pronunciation. To pronounce 'wind you use the weather wind not the winding a clock wind, yet the action is the later. Now you can wind up someone and even put the wind up them, A Polish gentleman can polish his boots. But I prefer to sit at a bar and drink a pint. Stay safe out there and keep well wrapped up against the cold.
Tim, Another awesome vid. I loved cruising all the way up the river. Down in SC now. Just not the same. Merry Christmas to you and the crew. NEVER too long Jeff
Great video thanks Tim. Hope you had a good Christmas (albeit working) and all the best for the New Year. Re video length, I'd say you've historically got it about right. But if you want to fulfill other's wishes and make them longer then it is always possible for some to fast forward through the slower bits, as long as there isn't your chat during them which would be missed. Perhaps even say if there's going to be anything more exciting at the end and at what timestamp (might need to be a caption). Thanks again for your hard work. It's much appreciated here in the UK.
Merry Christmas, Tim. I like the way explained the items not allowed. Makes a lot of sense to me. I live on the West Coast, so most of the places you go to, I have not seen or know much about. I love using Google Earth to get close to where you may be, then Google maps. I often see interesting places and things I would never get to experience. Also, thanks to Wikipedia, my knowledge has grown, thanks your hard efforts.
Thanks for another great video, Tim! Whenever you're cavitating, strangely it always brings back fond memories of my wife and I at dinner onboard a cruise ship when the thrusters engage to shove us off the dock and the table is shaking and the wine in our glasses is making little circles. What could be more exciting, fine dining and getting underway at the same time! All the best to You for New Years and the coming year!
Docking, undocking, and traveling. Three elements without fail in your videos, which are great. Your dialogue is so engaging and informative but when you don't have anything to say it's not dead air. It's traveling. Always a pleasure and I look forward to these every week. Plus an added benefit: if you're filming you always have an alibi if you need it. LOL Danny will be missed for sure.
Tim some thoughts for you. I would not ever want to put your channel in jeopardy, so thanks for telling me the 'rules'. As for the loss of Danny you never know what happens in life and your advice, kindly given, means more than you could ever know. I would not be where I am without kind people offering me their best counsel, and me be willing to hear it. Good on YOU for passing the wisdom along. Tim you constantly remind me that with age, comes wisdom, and passing that wisdom along to all of US makes US better. God bless and keep you good captain. May your crews never tire until the work is done! Merry Christmas and Happy new year to the best YT skipper I can think of !
I worked as a musician aboard an RCCL ship Jewel of the Seas in 2005. When we docked at Georgetown, Bermuda, the captain had to navigate between two jetties and then turn around. Anyway, in the turnaround process the cap turned that boat 962 feet long between those jetties with no more than 50 feet clearance fore and aft. That was massively impressive. Guys holding laser rangefinders on the bow & stern. Ship had azipods, not regular propeller(s), and of course bow thrusters. I always wondered if the nav system had some kind of turn-in-place routine they could call up to spin the boat on a dime. They did this a lot, but never more dramatic than Bermuda. They never wanted to back out of a port on departure.
Tim, I really enjoyed the video! Now about that cavitation…… lol. Thanks for putting up with us! CUOTO (BTW, Siri on my iPhone now recognizes and suggests that acronym!!)
Tim, I’m curled up on the couch under a nice warm blanket greatly enjoying the long version. I feel like I’m in the wheelhouse alongside you. Merry belated Christmas and Happy New Year Capt.

I enjoy most of your videos of any sort. I don’t expect you to ring my bell with every one, and when you don’t half the time I’m just not in that mood at that moment. I feel both your channels are more than entertaining and informative enough and I look forward to whatever you care to share with us.
Merry Belated Christmas and a Happy New Year! Over the years I’ve been blessed to witness the many ways to get cargo from point A to point B. My first experience with water transportation was when I was stationed at Scott AFB near Belleville, Il. I would take the family down to lock 27 ( I hope that’s the right number) and watch 1200’ tow lock through. To this day I still watch action on the live cam at lock 19. This video I enjoyed as I now live 150 miles north of Albany. It was great to see a familiar setting as you went north to the turning basin. When you’re back up Albany/Rensselaer let me know. If I can make it down the coffee is on me. You have a safe and prosperous 2022. See you on the one…
I like your videos as they are, grateful for your time and generosity and grateful for your employer for letting what is "shareable". Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year 2022.
Hi Tim. Good to see you at sea again. I like the rear-facing camera. Hey, if the vid is too long, I'll skip forward looking for action. If it's not on the video, I can't see it, so longer is better than shorter for me. The turn was nicely done. You steadied up right on the desired bearing. We used some of the same twin-screw techniques on Navy destroyers back in the day. Only thing, we'd have been yelled at for leaving those hatches open underway. :D
Thanks for a great video. So glad I ran across your channel! Best description of cavitation I have ever heard, and I say that having graduated from the Naval Academy and taken thermodynamics!

Love seeing what you do, and thank you for the company that lets you share this treat with us... Please just let your cam's run, as the longer the vid the more we get to see of the rive side...
Will Do Jonathan. Thank you for watching. CUOTO
Shout out to your boss and you. This Missouri country hick used to watch the bars lights about 3 miles away on the Mississippi from Missouri side when I was doing chores. Lol it was Scary. Thank you for all the great info
Thank you for watching and Happy New Year Paul. CUOTO
Great view of my old crew/rowing stomping grounds from college. Our boathouse was not too far from where you are/were. Merry Christmas and happy new year.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well. Thank you for watching. CUOTO
Happy New Year Barry. Thank you very much. That means the world to me. I really appreciate your kind words. CUOTO
Happy new year Tim, if people don’t like long videos they can always fast forward thru the unwanted sections, at least those of us that enjoy even just watching the boat moving and you talking and interacting with your crew and equipment can still get the content.
thanx Captain. All the best to you and yours.
CUOTO
Thank you for watching Chuck and Happy New Year. CUOTO
Enjoying the channel. My father and I are "dead air" fan's, so please keep them going. BTW, dad's a WWII Merchant Mariner, his brother worked boats for Moran, IOT and SONAT so we're right at home. Thank you and happy New Year.
WOW!! That's awesome!!! Thank you for watching and Happy New Year. Tell your dad that we don't get shot at as much as he did. CUOTO
I miss working on boats! From what I was taught, 3 and 5 blade screws cavitate less than 4 blade screws! It's more than just a vibration, those little bubbles shot peen the edges of the blades! Keep the format as it is, big things never move fast! Happy New Year!
Thank you very much for watching and Happy New Year to you! CUOTO
Love your 'dead air' please keep it in. Wishing you a happy New Year and thanks for this Christmas vlog. CUOTO.
Happy New Year Paul and thank you for watching. CUOTO
MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW WATER ---- ONE LONG TWO SHORT to you and your Crew..
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Appreciate that you share your profession and explaining your reasoning behind things. We're always asked to put ourselves in other's shoes to have empathy, but that's neigh impossible without transparency and a fuller understanding of the conditions they're operating under. You're a prime example of what we need more of!
Happy New Year William. Thank you very much for the kind words. CUOTO
Thank you very much for watching. Happy New Year. CUOTO
Thanks for sharing, and thank you for the instruction on cavitation - I always wanted to know what was going on there.
Thank you for watching David. CUOTO
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Charley. Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Having the honor of being a quest on a few tug boats trips I'm always impressed by the forward thinking of every move as well as the particular personality that can deal with hour upon hour of slow movement... God bless !!!!
Happy New Year and thank you for watching Tony. CUOTO
Hi from Southern Spain. Thank you, that was very interesting. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Felicidades Alejandra. Thank you for watching from my favorite country, España. CUOTO
Capt'n Tim, Howdy; Happy Festivus back to you and the crew. Nice video, always enjoy your verbal walkthroughs. What "dead air" chucklin' Always sometin' to see
ifin ya knows where to looks. LOL.
Thank you for watching and Happy New Year to you Hank. CUOTO
Thank you very much for watching Jason and I appreciate your kind words. CUOTO
Cool Video Captain Tim! It is nice to see what my family did years ago in a now format. Thanks for all the technical info on operations as well.
Thank you very much for watching. If you are new to the channel, Welcome. Please consider subscribing. I try to post new content every Tuesday. CUOTO
@@TimBatSea Tim. I wish I could come work with you. I have blood in those waters from 1900 ish. God Speed!
Wood tugs from turn of the century. Hope the river is faring well these days.
Thank you for watching. I'm glad we have you onboard. CUOTO
Capt Tim, this video...and your overall format are perfect! We so much appreciate your taking us along - and the caring explanations you share... you're an excellent instructor. Wishing you a wonderful 2022!
Thank you very much for watching and for your kind words. I really appreciate them. Happy New Year. CUOTO
Thanks again Tim, have a great 2022 !
Happy New Year to you as well Jord. CUOTO
Right in my neighborhood, Tim! I'm the next county up- in Saratoga. Another great video- thank you for sharing!
Thank you for watching Mike. CUOTO
Excellent job
Loved the blog
Thank you for watching Adam. CUOTO
TIM, Blessings , there is nothing forgot, all can be apply to life, road or water.
Thank you for watching Marie. CUOTO
I thought about getting a mariners license when I retired from the Navy in 2003, but took a different path. I miss some things about being at sea. I'm 3 years away from retiring for good. So I think I chose the right direction for myself. Enjoy your videos and can reflect back on my 21 year Naval career with pride.
Thank you for your service and for watching William. CUOTO
This Great Lakes boat nerd thoroughly enjoyed this video! Keep up the good work!
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. Please consider subscribing. I try to post new content every Tuesday. Happy New Year. CUOTO
Hey Tim , nice going. Awesome big again. Dead air video we all can go fast forward.
We have the same weather here in The Netherlands. I’m curled next to the fire place checking your story telling.
I wish you and your crew an super good problem free 2022.
Cuoto 2022!
Thank you very much Monk!!! Happy New Year to you as well! Thank you for watching. CUOTO
CUOTO
I really enjoy your videos, keep them coming . The little bit of dead air is fine, I like the adventure.
Thank you for watching Barry and Happy New Year. CUOTO
A Happy and Safe Holiday to you and the crew Captain!
Thank you very much Bill! Happy New Year to you. CUOTO
love all your videos. Great job
Thank you for watching Frank.
😂😂😂 Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you my friend. CUOTO
Tim, Another awesome vid. I loved cruising all the way up the river. Down in SC now. Just not the same. Merry Christmas to you and the crew. NEVER too long
Jeff
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Jeff! Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Thank you for watching Matt. Great ideas. CUOTO
Merry Christmas and happy New Year to you Tim. Sorry to hear Danny left. I'm sure you will train another good one.
Thank you for watching Wayne. CUOTO
very wise word Tim and very true. you take care have a great new year, I or should I say we all enjoy your films, nothing like this is done in the UK,
Happy New Year Brian and thank you for watching. CUOTO
Thank you for watching and Happy New Year Don. CUOTO
Woahhh very wise advise . Yet another amazing video
Thank you very much for watching Giovanni. CUOTO
Happy New Year and thank you for watching! CUOTO
Keep 'em long Tim. As you say, sitting at my desk, with a warm drink, is the perfect way to watch. Have a Very Happy New Year. CUOTO.
Happy New Year and thank you for watching. CUOTO
You are doing a fine job explaining and videoing everything we need to see and know, keep up the good work
Thank you very much for watching and for the kind words Dean. CUOTO
Thank you very much for watching Lew. Happy New Year. CUOTO
Thank you very much Eric. I appreciate your kind words. Happy New Year. CUOTO
First time watching you. Fascinating. Thank you for this point of view. I subscribed. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Wishing you and the crew a safe, happy,New Year.
Thank you very much John. Happy New Year to you as well. CUOTO
Thank you for watching the. If you are new to the channel, Welcome. Please consider subscribing. I try to post new content every Tuesday. CUOTO
Captain Tim you can not please everyone no matter how long or short the video is .

I´m sooo glad i found your channel! Will not give you a hard time making alot of comment so that i´m not saying something wrong....but i will try to remember and hit that LIKE button to help your channel. Thx for sharing...already love this channel, Sir 👍
Thank you very much! I really appreciate that. CUOTO
I enjoy most of your videos of any sort. I don’t expect you to ring my bell with every one, and when you don’t half the time I’m just not in that mood at that moment. I feel both your channels are more than entertaining and informative enough and I look forward to whatever you care to share with us.
I really appreciate that Rusty. Happy New Year. CUOTO
Thank you for watching Paul and for the coffee offer. CUOTO
I like your videos as they are, grateful for your time and generosity and grateful for your employer for letting what is "shareable". Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year 2022.
Thank you for watching and Happy New Year Eduardo. CUOTO
:D
lol Thank you very much or watching and make sure to have a Happy New Year! CUOTO
Thanks Tim for all you do! Happy New Year! 😎👍⚓CUOTO!
Happy New Year Rick and thank you for watching. CUOTO
