It was Awesome David!!! I miss SGA Times!!! Back in around 2006 golden days of SGA back in my teen days! Hope at the end SG will revive!! Hope Brad Wright have something for us!!! What u think?
Where David was talking about the episodes he did with Micheal Shanks and the great camaraderie between them it reminded me of that great scene where Daniel said to Rodney, "Well we certainly don't do it for the money" to which Rodney replied "Nooo" and then in his brilliant dead-pan way looks at Daniel and says, "You don't get paid more than me do you"? David and Micheal had a certain magic in the way they bounced-off each-other.
It was a bit differently. It was something about lack of fame for one's achievements in this line of work. I think Rodney said something like "We certainly don't do this for fame" and Daniel responded "No, we do this for the money". And then it was like you described ;) (I've watched it again less than two months ago ;) )
They don't do it for the money, but they certainly get paid well. Plus they have no expenses. So whatever Rodney gets paid is just piling up until he gets back. Everyone on Atlantis has hundreds of thousands of dollars waiting for them when they get home.
He nailed.. what made Atlantis so great was how well it walked the line between self-deprecation and great stories in a perfectly family friendly manner.
The interplay between David and Amanda(Tapping), and particularly Micheal Shanks, "do you really think that you are smarter than me? It was just brilliant, just goes to show, dont kill your characters off producers, you will deprive the fans of such moments.
@@KooChi1 It's funny...I'm a huge fan, but the episodes that focus on McKay are by far my favorite! I watch them over and over and am amazed at how much David really embodies that character!!! So much fun!!!!
Holy balls, I never saw an interview with Hewlett until now and it just explains everything about how he was able to do such a good job acting like a mad scientist maker nerd. I liked him as an actor on SGA but man, he's also a nice person. This is so interesting to watch :D
The world needs more David Hewlett. It is sad that not only did the Dr. McKay character lose his platform in the middle of his story, but when David showed up on the Dark Matter and Incorporated TV shows, his characters were underused even though the times they were on screen always improved the quality of those episodes in which they appearred.

I don't think I have ever sat through an almost 2hr interview/ brainstorming session. Funny, insightful, food for thought and inspiring. I do pop in here and there when David is live on Twitch with his son and their dynamic is just wonderful to see. So welcoming to all ages, engaging and plain ole gamer fun. It is my sincerest hope that chevron 6 will be locked in soon, with #7 to come for a future SG series. Thank you for this series David R and keep dialing the gate, we need it! ♥♥♥ (PS: I was a founding member of SGC and have the patch proudly displayed on my frige lol)
Meredith went from one of the most hated characters in SG-1 to one of the most lovable in Atlantis. Crazy good development. Hope you'll be a part of the next Stargate!
One of the best shows ever, I knew when I saw Ronan the first time he be a A list movie star, Jason has that it factor that guys like Arnie Wayne etc have
I absolutly love Rodney McKay as a character and I enjoyed the interview, however davids interview kinda reminded me about a topic near and dear to his heart….. Leadership! He got distracted pretty often, but I think I like him even more now.
There are no words to express the amount of love I have for David Hewlett's suggestion to turn Stargate into RHPS and throw popcorn at the screen when McKay appears.
I just found this.... love Rodney (David), and Love his sister..... He is so much the same person as in SGA. I had a feeling he was. God bless him and his family!
David H really seems like a down to earth guy. I really enjoyed the interview and have a even more respect for him. Love all things Stargate. Good job, David R. Subscribed to the channel.
Mr Read.... I am so happy you have a great relationship with David Hewlett. I am just now learning of this and your work, and very thankful for providing this interview.
I've always been a huge Stargate geek. Also, never dated a guy that was as much a fan as I am. More women than you think enjoy all 3 series. I even have the SG-1 logo as a tattoo. Meredith was always one of my favorite characters but women had Samantha Carter as a major role model as a strong woman in the military AND a scientist.
For me, the most inspiring thing about McKay is how he challenged himself to be better in every part of his life. Rodney learnt extremely valuable lessons from all his success and failure to become the man he always wanted to be.
YES OMG. How many internal organs would I give to have a Stargate Academy with McKay as an irascible but brilliant teacher. Oh my God, David whyyyy would you put such a thing in my head; that's unfair.
I'm so late to the party, but I love filler episodes! I miss having fun silly episodes to break up the storyline. To me, if you don't have filler, you don't have room for the characters to breathe and grow. To me the biggest example right now is The Boys. It's so jam-packed that I feel like I'm being bombarded with too much too quickly.
This popped on my recommendations and I'm in the middle of watching Season 3 of Stargate Atlantis! I'll lay low and watch these interviews once I finish the show to avoid any potential spoilers if that ever comes up lol. New subscriber here, can't wait to watch your content!
There isn't a single actor I enjoyed watching more on atlantis than David. Such talent and absolutely pefectly cast. The show wouldn't have been what it is without him.. Still sad it didn't last longer.
If I had the economic means I would buy the stargate franchise and offer David Hewlett and as many of the cast of SG1 and atlantis to participate again and step into their characters again.
Well I am glad you did ask that me too question, shows that men can discuss the subject respectfully and without animosity. Glad youtube recommended this :).
OMG! I never knew an actor could be this down to earth and be so nerdy! David just became my absolute favorite actor. I would love to sit down with him and nerd out about tech stuff! He was amazing as Rodney, but he is even more awesome as a real human!
At 1:29 the mention of the end of series McKay/Keller relationship was another example of the lost opportunities of not allowing more seasons to SGA. It would have been interesting to see the outside tensions of their jobs and how that would have affected them.
Woooo David is a legend, I loved seeing him in Dark Matter and it almost goes unsaid he was a true icon of the stargate franchise and amazing as Mckay.
We in Austria loved Atlantis and the Atlantis team! Great actors! It's a shame that there wasn't a 6th season, or a cinema film. You were the best. You brought Stargate to a high level. STARGATE UNIVERS was bad.
Outstanding interview. So good to watch. Atlantis became my favorite of the bunch because of the set and the characters. You realize that a lot of Hewlett is McKay except that McKay is arrogant, doesn’t like kids and has no sense of humor, unlike Hewlett. Winning Jennifer Keller was the one McKay victory that legitimized every nerd on Earth for all time. She did it, however, as he was beautifully clueless on romance. I loved how awkward he was with her, but how he someone lucked out. I think that gave hope to all geeks everywhere (before Big Bang). The beauty of that was truly McKay’s vulnerability despite his intelligence. And the Banter between Sheppard and McKay is some of the greatest dialogue in sci-fi. Of all the SG shows so far, Atlantis was the one I’d have liked to have been assigned to because of the beauty of the sets/world (minus the Wraith and Replicators) and the the banter between the characters. Thanks again for a great interview. Truly enjoyed this. It was like having you both in the living room with me.👍
I wasn't a fan of Keller. Fran had much more interesting personality. I don't get this "she's out his league" mentality in the series and in the viewer's world, as you mention a "victory" and "nerd legitimization". To me she wasn't anything special. And their relationship was really artificial in the series. The military chick with whom Rodney shared his body, that's a different story. I liked her and their chemistry with Rodney.
I'm late to the party here, but I gotta say how weird it feels to hear Rodney McKay talk like a normal person. I've never actually watched an interview with David out of character, so seeing him be normal and not all technobabble-y and manic is a real trip after seeing him in SGA over the course of many yearly rewatches. Still to this day, in my opinion, one of the strongest character performances ever put to film, a standout among standouts in a show that desperately needs another season.
With 70" TV's and surround sound, there are very few movies worth it to me to see in the theaters. When it costs $40 for two people to go to the theater and share a drink and popcorn, I'd rather sit in my recliner with popcorn that cost me $1.00 and my drink of choice.
I not at all surprised to find that David Hewlett is a nerd in real life. He’s not at all annoying like his character Rodney. Good interview, very enjoyable.
