We recently lumbered a 36" maple, a 36" white ash, and a 32" pecan. After drying, we tried planing with a Rigid (Home Depot) 13" planer with 2 HSS knives ruclips.net/user/postUgkxIzvvTi3_Qc8JnVdYYRJCvuoDC4QjTzeL . This job was clearly too much for that machine. The pecan was particularly difficult, due to heavy mineral deposits, and a sharp pair of HSS knives would be consumed by a mere 3 boards. We were also having lots of problems from chip bruising, due to poor dust collection. The shavings came off like straw and jammed in the 4" hose.We bought the DW735 simply to be able to run carbide blades, which worked brilliantly for the pecan. However, we found it to be a much, MUCH nicer machine. It was far more rigid than the "Rigid" planer, and far more accurate as well. But what I liked most about it was the dust feed. This machine has its own blower, which shreds the "straw" like shavings as they come off the cutting head and helps boost the shavings into the dust collection system. No more clogs! It's also nicely sealed so that the internals stay quite clean. This is just a well tempered machine that's a delight to use. It literally cut the labor in half. Just another example of getting what you pay for.
2 years later I returned and I was equally impressed. I was blown away by the simplicity of the mechanism of adjustment. I love watching the fine light curly shavings. Excellent design and execution. A true work of functional art. Video presentation was superb. 👍👍👍👍👍
Nothing is as nice and cherished as a tool you make yourself; I know someone who still has the wooden jointer plane that his grandfather made and brought from The Netherlands. That marble wood finished beautifully. I know you were limited by the lumber available, but I believe that quartersawn wood is preferred for the body. We also need to have a chat with Ootz (sp?). At 8:57 , he does not seem to be sufficiently excited about the plane shaping as he should be. Though he was quite pleased with the clamping of the initial glue up.
I absolutely love listening to the sound of the tools rather than blaring music. Mr. Chickadee style. Somehow it makes the process seem more do-able. Beautiful project. I definitely will be looking for more of your videos. Kudos !
I see my buddy Utz is looking handsome as ever and he's really getting the knack of holding the garage floor down for you while you're workin. The plane is gorgeous, partially cause of your wood choice and partially cause of your fine workmanship.
One of your very best projects ... I am a plane freak and your new creation has hit me on every cylinder possible!! Given your limited exposure to plane building makes the final product just that much more amazing. Give Utz a little scratch under the chin for me and keep this type of quality video coming. Cheers!
You do amazing work. I’m very new to woodworking, but people like yourself make me want to work hard at it. Thank you for taking the time to make your videos.
Great job on the hand plane. I am in the beginning stages of making my own planes now after being a woodworker for about 45 years. Thanks for the video. Keep up the great wok. Oh, and like many others, love the bluegrass soundtracks. Give Ootz (hope I spelled that right) a biscuit and a pat on the head for me. Thanks
a real woodworker!!! not that nailgun epoxy guys. refreshing! thank you so much. a new fan from berlin here , also check out Young Je he also makes awesome planes
Fantastic, a thing of beauty which should last a hundred years! The only things worth having are the things you only need to buy once, even better if you can make them yourself!
Stunning! I thought the title was just a click-bait tactic, but no... this actually IS the most beautiful hand plane I've ever seen. Outstanding job. And when Oots (sp?) got the cord my mind was officially blown. What's the reason for the tin foil? Just as a non-stick surface?
Haha. Thank bud I appreciate that! But It was a little click baity and a pretty bold statement as there are some seriously sweet planes out there. Yea Utz is a pretty handy shop mate! I used the foil because I could find any wax paper 😂
Beautiful plane! I am contemplating my first try. I love your "shop dog" whose name I don't know the spelling of! Thats great that he brings you cords!
Okay, the dog won me over but I’m a lover of all wood planes including molding planes. Mine go back to the early 1700’s and I’ve had to make new blades but they are glorious compared to metal planes! Thanks for a great video!....and for sharing a moment of the dogs time...
Es impresionante la calidad de su trabajo y la belleza en los acabados que UD imprime en sus creaciones . Saludos de un seguidor desde Colombia y felicitaciones por ese Don , gracias por compartir sus conocimientos.
Awesome work and finished product. I didn’t know you could get hardware kits to build you your own Japanese hand plane, but now I do and want to build my own. I really like to see a true craftsman do something special with beautiful hardwoods. Utz retrieving the extension cord was my favorite part of the video.
I've been sifting backwards through your content, so I'm sorry for the necro-post, but I needed to tell you what a beautiful piece I believe you've created there. Absolutely gorgeous!
Great looking plane! You say you don't have much experience in plane making, yours looks like a pro job. I've made quite a few tools and I wish my early attempts looked as good as yours. Keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing more of your work.
Dear TCC. Simply fantastic and extremely well done! Looks sooo beautiful. You are a very skilled woodworker. Congrats! Thanks a lot for making taping editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health to you and your friendly dog.
It SOUNDS like it is gliding through the wood. Very nice. I thought of making a hollow on the nose for pulling or sculpt the front for a better grip. Love the wood choice.
Gorgeous! Going back through some great videos while you're working your @$$ off. Also, @7:45 I said to myself..Utz wants to go in. What a great puppers. I wish they lived forever because it would take that long to live up the love they give us.
Marblewood is indeed tough on tools. I've turned a number of things from it, and it eats my CPM10V and M42 gouges like candy. But, the beautiful end result is worth all the sharpening. I think laminating blanks is the right thing to do regardless of how thick your stock is. Laminated = stable, especially when you oppose the grain as you did. Would you like a bibliography of my favorite books (out of many...) on plane making? Clyde
Clyde Ulmer good point about the stability. I was more concerned that the laminated pieces wouldn't look as good. I was lucky and got some super fine glue lines and it's hard to tell its laminated. I would love to see a list of your favorite books. Thanks Clyde!
OK -- here you go: Woodworker's Guide to Handplanes by Scott Wynn. An authoritative reference to all things plane-y; some good info on making and modifying planes. Making & Mastering Wood Planes (Revised Edition) by David Finck. Foreword by James Krenov... Wooden Planes and How to Make Them by David G. Perch and Robert S. Lee. Some Canadian guy named Leonard G. Lee, who started a company named Lee Valley Tools, published this one :-) Making Traditional Wooden Planes by John M. Whelan. Irritating typos, but great info. Enjoy. Clyde

Utz definitely deserves a treat raise for all the hard work he does.
The dog is so awesome, the build was cool too
Brilliant. Interesting that you’re using Jarrah. Have you used other Australian hardwoods like Raspberry Jam?
Just met Chris this morning.
He is a brilliant craftsman.
2 years later I returned and I was equally impressed. I was blown away by the simplicity of the mechanism of adjustment. I love watching the fine light curly shavings. Excellent design and execution. A true work of functional art. Video presentation was superb. 👍👍👍👍👍
Hi from Perth, Western Australia. It always makes me smile when I see people using Jarrah! (Grown right here)
Nothing is as nice and cherished as a tool you make yourself; I know someone who still has the wooden jointer plane that his grandfather made and brought from The Netherlands. That marble wood finished beautifully. I know you were limited by the lumber available, but I believe that quartersawn wood is preferred for the body.

I agree 100%! Even when there was music it was calming guitar. This was well done overall.
Me too. I keep these woodworking videos streaming while in the shop, better than radio.
You are a true craftsman mate. Your dog is a great shop companion. My dog can’t wait to get in the shop in the morning. Nice video.
I just ordered a Juuma Nr. 62 plane yesterday. Now I watched your video and want to build my own.
Damn you, RUclips! ;-)
ooo, I Like this design... so satisfying when I find that people are doing designs that do not trash the wood...
I see my buddy Utz is looking handsome as ever and he's really getting the knack of holding the garage floor down for you while you're workin. The plane is gorgeous, partially cause of your wood choice and partially cause of your fine workmanship.
Nice mallets. I'm from the 906 area. Great to see another Lakes person making saw dust. Keep it up.
I love meeting other local folks. Thanks for watching and saying hi Tom.
Maybe you should ask Utz to do more stuff , sometimes he seems to be bored ! Nice manual planer .
My pleasure Douglas, glad you foung the channel. Enjoy your journey friend, its a good one!
Great job on the hand plane. I am in the beginning stages of making my own planes now after being a woodworker for about 45 years. Thanks for the video. Keep up the great wok. Thanks
Haha thanks Ronald, and yes Ill give Utz a nice Pat for you.
I just knew it was spelled Utz. You can just call me Ron How many planes have you built and what different types?
a real woodworker!!! not that nailgun epoxy guys. refreshing! thank you so much. a new fan from berlin here , also check out Young Je he also makes awesome planes
I did exact same build with exact same wood and kit! I only suggest the thought of a handle out front. Never the less, be proud of that beauty.
Beautiful dog, with beautifull eyes... Nice plane, of course. Thanks for sharing.
Buddy she is an absolute beauty !!! Ur an inspiration to watch put these pieces together keep up the good work much love from Canada!!!
That is the most beautiful handmade plane I have ever seen! Nice work!
Thanks Carl, I have some other really cook wood that I want to build some planes out of. Its a lot of fun!
That marble wood looks gorgeous!!
Dude, your shop partner is super intense! Love him and you do very nice work as well
Fantastic, a thing of beauty which should last a hundred years! The only things worth having are the things you only need to buy once, even better if you can make them yourself!

Just ordered this kit from LV. Can't wait. Thanks for the great instruction
thumbs up to my fellow michagander you are a true clamp champ have a great day
Two things I enjoy woodworking and a good dog
damn straight!
Beautiful plane! I am contemplating my first try. I love your "shop dog" whose name I don't know the spelling of! Thats great that he brings you cords!
Looks beautiful. The shape reminds me of a concept car from the 50's, where they imagined what we would be driving today
Utz is definitely the brains of the operation! 😂 I need me a reliable shop mate, my Westie just growls and ignores me! 🤣
love the plane and the dog, Utz. Trained to bring you the chord is just awesome.
Yea Utz is the best haha!
That pup is ready for the job!
Straightforward, clever pup, honest representation, nice edits, and very entertaining. Subscribed.
Thanks Luke! very much appreciated. Im glad my videos are coming across that way. Its what I am shooting for
I am glad to see using a dust mask when band sawing that exotic hardwood. My late Dad didn’t and died of lung cancer.
Okay, the dog won me over but I’m a lover of all wood planes including molding planes. Mine go back to the early 1700’s and I’ve had to make new blades but they are glorious compared to metal planes! Thanks for a great video!....and for sharing a moment of the dogs time...
It looks terrific. Has an old wooden boat vibe to it, which is really cool. Also came with racing stripes, so it looks fast just sitting there ;)
Your dog is super chill!
Nicely done video, the plane looks beautiful, & works just fine. Well done!
Am I heating a North Carolina accent? You sound like my grandson in Fayetteville. Great video.
Absolutely gorgeous, Chris! You are a true inspiration. I can't believe I found your channel just recently.
Thanks man. yea there is so much out there I find new channels all the time haha
Very nice. A tools you'd be proud to have made and own.
Wowzer, what a beautiful Plane! Cute little shop apprentice you have there!
Great choice on the wood. I agree it's a beautiful piece. Something to definitely have around for your lifetime and hand down to the next gen.
Thank you roland. I really hope there is someone in my family someday that love woodworking and I can pass these things down to.
Incredible! You certainly chose some gorgeous wood for this project!!!
Gorgeous! I’m going to make a smoother first too, we’ll see how that turns out before I make a jack, but this one of yours is beautiful indeed.
Looks amazing turned out beautiful
Man that looks amazing! That wood is beautiful, fantastic job!
Thanks bobby! I love this plane!
man, that looks sweet. I like the subtle lines that the shaping creates.
beautiful! looks like an old hot-rod car! You and wood by wright are inspiring me to make my own some day.
Beautiful piece of workmanship. Tools as art. How perfect
Oh man, that's a nice wooden plane... I always wanted to make one and you got me inspired!!
You definitely should. Make sure to share some pics when you are done

So glad I found your channel. Excellent job on the plane and perfect choice in wood and finishes. Great job!!!!
David Sowell thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it!!
Lee valleys kit along with your work has obviously produced a nice working plane gauged by those shavings, well done.
Training your dog to fetch an extension cord?? You just earned yourself a sub!
Awesome work and finished product. I didn’t know you could get hardware kits to build you your own Japanese hand plane, but now I do and want to build my own. I really like to see a true craftsman do something special with beautiful hardwoods. Utz retrieving the extension cord was my favorite part of the video.
Your craftsmanship is inspiring
lovely bit of work your a true craftsman thank you
I've been sifting backwards through your content, so I'm sorry for the necro-post, but I needed to tell you what a beautiful piece I believe you've created there. Absolutely gorgeous!
Thanks Duane. I don’t mind necro-posts at all haha. I love and use that plane still
Well done! I was initially concerned that the layers of wood wouldn’t come out well, but it blended perfectly and looks awesome.
Beautiful plane, great video some of the shots where really cool

I have yet to build up the courage to make one, but your video brought me a step closer.
Do it bud! if you dont get the body just right you can easily make another one. let me know how it goes when you do
I’m going to give it a shot my buddy, I’ll tag you in a few pictures when I make a run at it.

What a lovely plane you've made. Great work......
It SOUNDS like it is gliding through the wood. Very nice. I thought of making a hollow on the nose for pulling or sculpt the front for a better grip. Love the wood choice.
OMG that is the most stunningly beautiful plane ever!
The only thing wrong with it is that it's not in my workshop!
Turned out great. Don't think I'd change a thing.
Awesome work! I always look forward to your videos
jake devillier thanks Jake!!!
Love your work, you're very clever.
Thanks Ron!
