Wooden Body Shooting Hand Plane

- I built a shooting plane, out of redgum using a lee valley wooden plane hardware kit.
Shooting planes let you shoot ends of boards to get a perfect 90° end to your board (or any other angle) more accurately than a mitresaw or tablesaw.
I purchased the kit directly from Lee Valley www.leevalley.... though if I make another plane, I probably will just buy a blade rather than the full kit

That looks good and ergonomic too
I’ve been looking for just such a project. If I can get the same hardware, I’m building one. Many thanks!
Nice build. Mix of old world wooden body with modern iron and adjuster. Loks like a great addition to the shop.
Thanks! I hadn't really thought about the new-meets-old part but you're right - the redgum beam was inherited from my dad who believed it to be >100 years old when he bought it, so new-meets-very-old!
You could just hear the hardness of the redgum! ... and the birdies. Birdies was nice ;)
Ha! The cockatoos here have two modes - stealthy ninja birds, and sirens. I waited until there was a "dull" in their noise and thats the results!
That's a nice, easier, effective design.
Thanks!
Lovely stuff. Might’ve been easier to make it out of something softer though, like steel
Hah! Redgum isn't *too* bad. Kinda. It could be worse? 😁 Going slow just means its easier to not overshoot your lines, and thats the story I'm sticking to!
I should really make one of these, I've had the parts forever. Nice work!
Love your work mate great to see an Aussie produce such fine woodworking projects
Beautiful !!!
Thanks!
Nice work. Where did you purchase the Norris adjuster and iron?
Got it, did not see you text in the beginning
"Pony sauce" HAHAH nice build man
This looks like it was a fun project. And it seems to work very well; why do you say it's "an ok" shooter?
It works exceptionally for smoothing but by comparison my metal planes work a lot better for shooting - the metal LAJ can take a thicker shaving, with less effort, and leave a smoother result.
It could be due to the angle the a2 blade is sharpened on, I'll need to experiment some more!
Very nice. It looks a lot like 'Jarrah' to me, which is a red gum 😁. Mines the old fashioned tap the blade with a hammer to adjust the cut. I like your fancy green curve template thingy mabob. Where can I get one?
I have a couple beams passed down from dad, 2 jarrah, 1 redgum. I haven't figured out what to do with the jarrah just yet because I'm not sure I want to spend the week sharpening 😂 always get me the "softer" jarrag being much much worse on the blades!
Next plane I make will be the tippytappy with hammer - while it's a well made Norris adjuster, I'm still not a fan of them and the hammer and wedge give more tactile feedback on adjustment!
Templates I just grabbed from Amazon amzn.to/3VzMODr - I *think* officeworks have similar
Nice work! .. what did you mean by just buying another blade rather than a whole new kit for another plane? .. and also, what do you think made it only an "OK" shooter? I was thinking of making something similar and drill holes in for some steel round bar.
It turns out I'm not a huge fan of the norris adjuster. Its well made - as is most Veritas stuff - but doesn't gel well with me. I'd probably grab a "spare/replacement" blade from a low angle jack and use a crosspin-and-wedge mechanism like on Krenovs planes. I've made one of those before (not on camera!) and the tippy-tappy-with-a-hammer actually gives a great deal of control which I don't feel from the norris adjuster!

Steel round bar for weight is a good idea - I was loosely following the ideas from a FWW article (or maybe Popwood?) and the author did that. Part of me wants to add lead shot, make it sound like maracas when you plane 😁
Hi what brand is that white pencil please.
👌👍✌️
