Let the "old" girl rest after you made her all shiny on the inside again! Use her for promotional stuff and light work maybe? That last trip was absolutely the most epic you have ever done, and will serve quite well as the last hard work she will do.

I really appreciate the amount of time, money and effort that has gone into this car, and I always look forward to its appearances in 4WD 24/7.
It’s kinda weird to hear this thing being called old, as my daily driver is a 2001 Astra.
If I were ever to get hold of this car, personally I’d put the manual transmission back in it. I do have a thing for three pedals, and with almost every car around these days being automatic, I’d like to go the other way for a change.
    Keep up the great content!

What a rig this has been Rocket! The places its been and the stories it could tell. If you choose to start over go for another auto 79 dual cab with front and rear coils with portals, a big built auto and canopy. A single cab would be a great rig to build but myself and everyone knows Rocket with the big 79 dual cab. To me and in my opinion thats who Rocket Rod that we all love and know! Whatever you choose to build will no doubt be a great rig. Dont forget your reaction after driving a GU with a 6BT Cummins!

Rocket Rod, I recall the early 4WD Action videos with the old Triton. You’re the personality that makes it work, not the vehicle.
I think the commentary supporting the modern approach is bang on…..upgrade to a new 79. But rather than go the single cab, stick with the duel cab. This is where all the family tourers and big rigs start.
    Cheers for the great updates!

  • @MJTAUTOMOTIVE

I think you should build a 79 4 door wagon. A lot less weight than a big steel canopy that gets filled with a lot of heavy items and 100% watertight. You could build a mega light weight set up in the rear. Plus you have to keep the old 79. You can't retire the old girl it is to much of legend. Thanks for the update Rod.

Greetings from Canada, Rod. I have watched this video twice to put into words my thoughts. I can say from experience that regret over the loss of a beloved vehicle for whatever reason can follow one for a very long time. I wasn't privvy to the amazing vehicles you have in Australia, nor was my budget anywhere near what I think yours may be. I still have regrets.
Sometimes we all suffer from a momentary affliction I call "Shiney Kit Syndrome". See something new and have to get it, only to be disappointed. R&D of new components and hardware is extremely important in your business, but I think your statement at the 6 second mark really shows the true meaning of "The Old Girl".
Sure, build a new one, but for your piece of mind and the awe and joy of your fans, don't shelf her. She is a dream truck for many and is one "slushbox" vehicle I would be proud to own.
Thanks for all you give us!

    Hey Rocket
Mate, I know the memories and experiences you have had with the old girl are priceless, but here is a thought, through your patrons you could run a comp and have her as the main prize, knowing she will still be on the trax out there doing what she loves to do best, sending it. Only with a new loving owner and still hold your tag for advertising just scaled down a little.
I'm sure a patron wouldn't mind that and would love and cherish a piece of Rocket Rod history. Mate, I love your work your vid's and what you and the boys from 4wd 24-7 do, and as jealous as I am having retired my 62 without being able to replace her watching you fellers keep my hopes alive of maybe getting out there again someday.

im all the way across the world here in the U.S of A Rod. she has been faithful over the years and i get it being a tough decision i really do , but you even said it yourself getting a new 79 would allow you to build up from scratch and have the more modern things the ole girl just doesnt have. seeing all that you and the rest of the guys have done over the years i believe newer would soot you good. keep the ole girl around as a daily driver , or auction her off for a particular charity that is local or what ever. but i really think upgrading would really do wonders . best of luck on your decision mate , all i could do is offer my thoughts as you asked. i look forward to seeing what you decide either way . cheers mate.

Definitely get a new 2 door 79 with portal axles, 35in tyres, your new auto transmission and give it a good run through the Aussie bush 😊. That’s what we want to see.

Must be one of the hardest decisions you have to make as she is legendary and has been faithful and never really let you down. A new rig makes sense for your development of your auto's. For Touring and some tough tracks i think a 79 s/cab with portals or at the very least JMax Rear diff correction kit, full Superior Lift kit and Airbags in the rear. Rear winch this time.
    Good luck making your decision.

To be honest Rocket, I'd say build a new one. Shawn got the new Dirty 30, why not treat yourself to a new 79? Maybe we could convince Graham to do a new Shorty and have a throwback episode.
Seeing what you do with such a large truck convinced me to take my full size out and conquer trails I never thought it could tackle.

I would absolutely love to see a coil rear single cab 79 Rocket. Nothing too crazy but something that a young lad would like to work his way to getting would be sick. Another realistic awesome all rounder that can tow a decent load but still do 90% of the tough tracks around

Dual cab 79 with a 600mm chassis extension, will give you the same size tray as a single cab. Great turning circle too.

Retire the big rig and build another, I too love Toyota land cruisers particularly the 79 series. The old girl should be in a museum. She has really traversed Australia.

Go different with a Xtra cab, coils , portals and a not so heavy canopy setup and it will be a beast 💯❤

I think it’s time to move to a single cab. Better weight distribution, also I think it’s a direction that is more current. Of course stay with the 79. It would be good to see a build that is both hardcore & tourer.

Subscribed mate. Please build a well balanced single cab auto. You will go places the others dream of.
I have a single cab IFS manual on 31s and I happily go places the 4 inch lifted coil-sprung safaris on 35s go.
Last time I went out with them, I drove a section that 60% of the safaris on 35s got completely hung up on.
Make sure you trim the deck so you have a good approach angle, and get the best approach angle from the front possible.
Balance and approach angle elminates the need for lockers, then with portal axles, lockers, and some semi aggressive mud terrains? Maaaate.
The others won't know how to keep up, Graham's D-Max will look properly silly.
