I would have a hard time to pick a favourite Fish era Marillion album. The first two I love, Misplaced Childhood has such personal meaning to me, I lived through that album. But Clutching at Straws is so good musically.

Some bands where I have a hard time picking a favorite are: Uriah Heep, I lean towards Look At Yourself or Salisbury, but there are other Heep albums that I think are just as good. Queen, it's usually between Sheer Heart Attack and A Night At The Opera , however I can't deny the greatness of both Queen and Queen II. With ELO, it could be Face The Music, Eldorado, A New World Record or Out Of The Blue. ELP, Tarkus , Trilogy or Brain Salad Surgery. Mott The Hoople, their s/t debut, Brain Capers, All The Young Dudes or Mott. Cheap Trick, I have a hard time deciding between their debut, Heaven Tonight or Dream Police . Thanks to Pete and Martin for another great topic and another great show. I'd like to wish everyone a happy, healthy and safe Easter weekend.🐰
Per Martin's "first album I got" point, there are a few records that are my favourites because of this. Because that record (eg. Chinatown by Thin Lizzy), I listened to it over and over and fell in love with it as a whole that I was motivated to explore the rest of their discography. While sentimentality does play a role, my history is longest with that first purchase which I continued listening to along with the rest of the catalogue, so it holds a special place in my heart and remains my favorite record.
Chinatown was actually one of the last Thin Lizzy albums I heard, but it is a really good one, Black Rose is my favorite, then Chinatown and then Thunder & Lightning. So whether Chinatown is a first album or not, it is a cool choice for a favorite. Sugar Blues, We Will be Strong, Sweetheart… etc etc.
Not a bad first album! Was just listening to that album today ha. I like/love everything Lizzy did from Nightlife to Thunder and Lightning. I think Chinatown is underrated and is a good hard rock album, but I’m not sure it’s a great Lizzy album. It’s quite consistent top to bottom, but I don’t think the ‘highs’ (We Will Be Strong, Killer On The Loose, Genocide, etc.) stack up against the best material on Fighting through Black Rose. Personally, I think Renegade is a much more successful album with that lineup.
So hard to say what your ABSOLUTE favorite album is, but it's gotta be one of these: AC/DC - Let There Be Rock / Powerage Bruce Dickinson - The Chemical Wedding Pink Floyd - Animals Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
I'd pick The Nature of the Beast over Harder Faster....I'd add in Heartbeat City with The Cars...and the band for me that I tend to rotate on "My favorite album by them" list is The Rolling Stones.
Some good observations gazn. I do like Heartbeat city, but the pure nostalgia of their first 2 are definitely tops for me. Don't like A LOT of Rolling Stones albums but really love my current top 3 which are: Exile, Some Girls, and Tattoo You.
@@toddhill7483 I'm with ya on the first 2 Cars albums, and I would personally put Panorama and Shake it Up over Heartbeat City myself, but I've been in several fan forums for The Cars over the years and I've seen Heartbeat City beat Candy-O more times than not..surprising I know, but that album came out when Mtv was big and acquired a whole fan base soley from that one album. It sold more than Candy-0 too, and I think they both tied on platinum status, but I disagree with them being a 2-trick pony sorta speak with their entire fan base, and Nature of the Beast outsold Harder Faster by quite a bit, so wouldnt that one be the most popular? I just disagree with alot of their conclusions..hahahhaha.
I dig this content, and truly appreciate both guys. That said, Martin is wrong. I've used the 'gateway' album A TON in my rankings. Several times the album that introduced me to a band goes on to be my favorite because of the sentimental connection I have with it. I'm grateful for discovering bands, so it's tough not to give extra weight to the album that opened the door.
There are only a handful of bands that my absolute favorite pops right in my head immediately. There are many that there are a few albums I go back and forth on....Great show and topic!
Some random takes on the topic Beatles: Debut (US) and Abby Road Stones: Out of Our Heads and Let it Bleed Byrds: debut and Turn, Turn, Turn Ac-Dc: Highway to Hell and Back in Black Sabbath: Masters of Reality and Heaven and Hell Priest: British Steel and Screaming Metallic: Puppets and Black Album Slayer: Reign and Seasons King Diamond: Fatal Portrait and Abigail
Taken collectively, the first six albums plus Done with Mirrors rates a 9.75/10. Add Rock And A Hard Place and Permanent Vacation, and I’m still at a 9.25/10. Bring in Pump and Get A Grip, and the rating drops to 8/10. And of course it just gets worse from there, IMHO.
It's funny but my experience is that most people talk about the Allman Brothers Band albums At Fillmore East and Eat A Peach more than the first two albums
Favorite studio albums, live is a separate list for me 1. Deep Purple In Rock 2. The Allman Brothers Eat a Peach 3. Rainbow Rainbow Rising 4. Traffic John Barleycorn Must Die 5. Roy Buchanan You're Not Alone
Funnily enough, MIke Rutherford once said that in his opinion Genesis didn't have one universally revered album as the Floyd had Dark Side and Yes had Close to the Edge. I still hear quite a few Genesis fans saying they prefer Selling England to The Lamb.
This was a fun episode. I would push back on “Never Before” and “Lazy” as great songs on Machine Head. That and “In Rock” are clearly the best 2 Deep purple albums. Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow” Santana…The first 3 1969-1971 are all 10 out of 10 classics The Jimi Hendrix Experience…all three are drop dead classics. The James Gang - Yer Album & Rides Again Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road For lots of good albums…but no 10’s How about Johnny Winter, Rory Gallagher, The Marshall Tucker Band, Bad Company, Humble Pie & Grand Funk Railroad. Again this was such a cool topic !!!
In the 4th category, I'd put: Slade, Bad Company, Gary Moore, Golden Earring, Status Quo, Black Oak Arkansas, Toto, Megadeth, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Elp, Free, S.A.H.B., Grand Funk, Can, Amon Duul II, Reo Speedwagon, Bonamassa, ... For all those artists, I find it difficult to pick a fav album. Cool show (although a bit on the short side...) Cheers.
For Uriah Heep I have a really tough time picking a favorite from ‘…Very 'Eavy ...Very 'Umble’ through ‘Sweet Freedom’ as they are all so good and not one is played more then the others. They have good music after but those first 6 albums I have on equal level to each other.
UFO are the kings of the fourth category for me. I like every album from Phenomenon to Making Contact, I wouldn’t give any of their albums a 10/10. Yet, Strangers in the Night is a masterpiece.
@@HuddshouseofRockNMetal The inclusion of 'Alone Again Or' on 'Lights Out' puts it just below Obsession in this book, because the track list on Obsession is so strong.
I like every album from UFO 1970 with Mick Bolton on guitar, to Mechanix with Paul Chapman on Guitar. My favorite songs are Timothy Evil Treacle People Silver Bird Prince Kajuku Flying Space Child Queen of the Deep High Flyer Too Much of Nothing I Can't Roll Her On With the Action Martian Chronicles Belladonna Electric Phase Lights Out I Ain't no Baby One More For the Rodeo Anytime Anyplace Long Gone the Writer
Rainbow - Rising was a 10 . Do You Close Your Eyes was my favorite song for years. Guess a lot of people have had problems with the song, I definitely don't. The lyrics were actually pretty clever
Even with a 10-minute drum solo in 'A Light In The Black'? Hell, I'm a drummer & my old band was named after the song 'Stargazer', but I don't think 'Rising' is vastly superior to the debut. They were already great, it's just that 'Rising' has been romanticised & elevated to another status especially in the years since Ronnie Dio & Cozy Powell's passing RIP
Most of my favorite albums are the first albums I've ever heard growing up with almost every band I like. Dressed to kill, Come taste the band, VH1, Head games ,Zeppelin 4, Come and get It, Abbey Road and Down to Earth are still my favorite albums from these bands.
Came here to mention Leftoverture & Point of Know Return. Surprised they missed that one! It might make an interesting show to show to discuss great album pairs. Demons & Wizards / Magicians Birthday, H&H / Mob Rules, Ride the Lightning / Master of Puppets.
I always find it hard to rank the Voivod catalogue, but thinking of Pentagram, of the studio albums I prefer 'Sub-Basement' but 'First Daze Here' is just sooo good, everything on it is a 10/10 classic in my opinion!
I agree too but never found myself liking it more than for what it was - about 4 very good tunes. Sits probably in the middle part of their discography (for me)
My take on Draw The Line is definitely in the minority. Rocks is probably my favorite with Draw The Line right behind. I know most don't care for it but was cranking it in the car the other day and I still don't see why it's disliked so much.
I've had hard time choosing a best albums by Iron Maiden and Motorhead which are my two favourite bands. When doing rankings of Maiden albums, on number one spot there's been the self titled, Powerslave, Piece of Mind, Seventh son, The X Factor and Brave New World. And with Motorhead i've ranked Overkill, Bomber, Another Perfect Day, Orgasmatron, Bastards and Sacrifice as the best. Impossible job.
@@Jason-nn9pl x factor is as good as any Maiden album. Not the same though - darker, lower. A 'huge Maiden fan' should recognise that or maybe not use the term. It kind of is the issue where a lot of bands change. We don't get it or lose interest and we blame the band for it. Personally I have loved X Factor since the day it came out - having not been totally there on fear of the dark.

But mostly, even the bands where I have another favorite, I agree the ones mentioned by Pete and Martin I would usually agree to be near the top one.
Got a show idea for the Funhouse that came from the Prog Seat discussion the other night about wanting new studio material from King Crimson: Legacy Bands Where We Do (or Don't) Want New Albums. For example, me personally, I'm not even a big Billy Joel fan, but I think it's pretty cool that he hasn't released an album since 1993!
Favorite Album? It's Complicated! (w/ Martin Popoff) 1ª Category: Band with a Hit Album --------------------- Martin Popoff ------------------------- April Wine - Harder... And what I find intriguing is a ton of these bands Martin and Pete listed--the general consensus favorites, usually fall at the beginning, end, or in the midst of a strong string of really good albums, any of which could have been their best (i.e. Yes, Metal Church, Dio, MSG, April Wine, etc.)
I think Queen - The Game might be taken under consideration Martin, for me it has one large foot in the classic 70's era but you can certainly get a sense of that 80's sound that would eventually lead to the most contentious album in their catalogue Hot Space.
A lot of people got hooked on to Queen through that particular album, including myself. Of course once you went through their back catalogue, its ranking took a hit (at least for me).
Melvins are a good one for this. A lot of people site Bullhead as their favorite (the band Boris got their name from a song on this record). For me, Houdini is my favorite although Stoner Witch is a close second. They have a lot of weird experimental albums. There's Nude With Boots which is a lot more accessible. Then they had a fantastic "comeback" to form with (a) Senile Animal and Bride Screamed Murder where they added a second drummer and Jared Warren-both from the band Big Business. Those records went over extremely well. I saw them on both tours and I talked to people that said they like the newest albums the best but didn't really know their first couple of albums (most songs off of those-Ozma and Gluey Porch Treatments are slow, heavy and like 2 minutes long). Etc. etc. on it goes....
Please do an episode on filler songs. There’s lots to choose from. Example: every Rush album from Hold Your Fire to Clockwork Angels has at least one sometimes two filler songs. Once the cd age began it seems like bands just went crazy with extra tracks thinking a 60 min album would be better than a 40 minute album.
There are are obvious filler songs on many albums in the 70's as well, I often wondered whether the bands knew they had a crappy song on there but couldn't come up with anything better, or seriously thought what they had recorded was a decent song. Sometimes the filler song becomes legendary though, like Paranoid and Tush - both recorded just because there was 3 minutes of room left on the tape that had to be used.
For me Alice Cooper and Queen are such examples. There isn't one Cooper album I have no complaints about. I might pick my favorite almost randomly when asked about it. With Queen it's a bit easier. I almost reached a consensus that The Miracle is my favorite Queen album (here you go, Martin, I'm picking something after Jazz). But I'm not happy about picking The Miracle either. I can pick Jazz or Sheer Heart Attack (these two I consider closest to The Miracle for me), but I would be dissatisfied in a similar manner.
Queen,my favorite band since 1980. favorite Queen album;Jazz I have been a fan of Alice Cooper longer than I have been a fan of any one. Favorite Alice Cooper album From The Inside I like that he based the songs on what he experienced in rehab.I think Jack Knife Johnny is so under rated.A beautiful, but sad, song. When I saw him in 2019,he did Serious. That was a pleasant surprise.
YES Martin! Sammy Hagar Ten 13 is really good start to finish. I thought Marching to Mars start to finish was really good also. I reach for those more than I do Standing Hampton or VOA nowadays. Red Voodoo and Not 4 Sale completes a really strong 4 album series from Sammy and the Waboritas. Maybe at 53, I'm bored with music like you guys talked about a few weeks ago as I have started to like Cosmic Universal Fashion a lot more than when it came out in 2008. Any of These 5 before Chickenfoot I think could be considered a favorite Sammy album.
The definitive album for The Sensational Alex Harvey Band is the Live album. It embraces the quirky, eclectic power of the band. Every SAHB fan will tell you Alex was amazing standing and challenging the audience on stage. The studio albums are all great but for some reason they really did not break through.
Has anyone else noticed that the shorter Pete's hair gets the shaggier Martin's hair is. Imagine a Hippy Martin and a skinhead Pete, Talk about role reversals!! As usual a great conversation between two smart music loving dudes! My disagreement is with The Doors. Yes that first is indeed great and one of the top firsts ever but so is their last LP a best ever send off. 'LA Woman' is my favorite with their 1st being my 2nd! Like Pete my favorite Dead LP is 'Blues for Allah' and Floyd's 'D.S.O.T.M'. 'Remain in Light' is peak Talking Heads, the 80's DSOTM for me. Slayer's 3rd to 5th, a peak trio IMHO! Thanks for another great video!
@@MartinPopoff Nah, I like the Shaggy look. All you need is a dog named 'Scooby Doo' and a Magic bus and you could be solving Murder Mysteries involving ethereal beings! Think of the children Martin. Or else you are stuck with being the reincarnation of a famous Soviet General!
Exodus: Bonded... Motörhead: No sleep til Hammersmith ELP: Pictures... King Crimson: In the court... Voivod: Killing... Priest: British Steel Maiden: The number... Metal Church: Debut Beatles: Blue Album Jethro Tull: Stand Up Bob Marley: Survival Saxon: Wheels.... Krokus: Metal Rendezvous These are some of the bands I have a clear favorite album. The decision is harder for Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, AC/DC, Metallica, Black Sabbath....
In my collection there are a few bands where I am unable to pick a favourite on the spot. The most prominent example would be Black Sabbath, Rush, Iron Maiden. Coincidentally they all have what (I believe) are exceptionally long runs of consecutive high-quality albums. Couldn't pick my favourite if my life depended on it.
I'd definitely make a case for Overkill ahead of Ace Of Spades. And 1987 may be Whitesnake's most commercially successful album, but it's a million miles from being their best. Maybe that's the view in North America? And yes, I'm a Brit ;)
Black Sabbath ( First 6 Albums), Ufo (Schenker 70's Era), Cheap Trick (First 4 Albums) And Rush (76-81) is so hard to pick and I feel Guilty for not include another. 1) Black Sabbath: Sabotage 2) Ufo: Force It 3) Cheap Trick: In Color 4) Rush: Hemispheres
Currently my favourite band is Renaissance...very difficult to pick the best up to Live At Carnegie Hall (which I rate as 10/10)...all those before are 7-9...just depends on my mood
For me the perfect examples for category 4 are the Allman Brothers and Gov't Mule, I can neither choose a studio nor a live album, I can also not choose a specific era.i might also add Rory Gallagher, I like a lot of stuff throughout his career including the most recent live albums.
Man, picking a favourite album in hard to do with 14,000 plus in my collection. I thought about it for quite awhile and cane up with Deep Purples Fireball album from 1971. Tough decision.
As I'm currently sitting on 615 cd releases, the prospect of someone owning 14,000 is truly depressing. (But I do love the never ending pursuit of great albums)
@@toddhill7483 Just hit 19k last week...Others have said "what's the point" in owning that much music (since you can't listen to all of it all the time) but the point isn't to play all of it all the time and/or only owning as much as you can constantly listen to over & over - it's having variety. I basically host my own radio station (for myself)... And sure there's also that 'hoarding" mentality that kicked in where you just gotta own all albums by a given artist. I still try to stick to music I really actually like - I buy music as mp3 downloads a la carte so I only pay for 'good' tracks. And a while back when I made the jump to mp3-only I ripped all of the 'worthy' tracks from my cd's & vinyl LP's one-time to form the basis of my initial music database (maybe about 15,000 tracks to start from about 3.5k-4k albums - I'm now at 72,000 tracks & counting). It's amazing how many great albums came out of the 70's by either then-unknown or now-forgotten bands! From that decade alone I've got close to 20,000 tracks across maybe 4.5k+ albums
I think the problem with the transition from vinyl to CD as a medium is that the amount of filler material increased significantly. This is so even from bands I love.
Nazareth definitely love all their albums up to the 80s.Tull for me have about 10 albums that I would consider 10s.Queen love all their stuff to Jazz. Can't really say there is one that stands out they're all very good on any given day
I love Alcatrazz' "Disturbing the Peace" -Vai and Bonnet making modern thinking man's hard rock that holds up - and would take "Live Sentence" as Yngwie's finest moment. Both Vai and Yngwie were never the same after that for me. Just one person's view! Love the show.
Mountain Climbing or Nantucket Sleighride? Deep Purple Machine Head or Burn? UFO Is tough, I'm going Force It but there's a few toss ups. Trower Bridge of Sigh though I might prefer Twice Temoved.
So what are the 3-4 favorites for Priest? I am guessing Sad Wings or Stained Class or Screaming for Vengeance or Painkiller? But how about British Steel or Defenders of the Faith? Sin after Sin and Killing Machine/Hell Bent are great but usually somewhat forgotten, I guess.
The bands that had greatest hits albums early on.. . Tend to be the ones with no 10 out 10 classics. Kiss Double Platinum, Eagles greatest hits vol 1 & 2, Doobie Brothers, Steve Miller Band, Foreigner, Bad Company, The Guess Who, The Hollies, Steppenwolf, Zztop...
Magnum could fit in multiple categories, some will always say Storytellers Night/Chase The Dragon/Vigilante/Wings of Heaven, others may choose MagnumII/Kingdom of Madness, unlikely any will choose the post 2000 albums even though these are really good. Saxon Could also fit in multiple categories.
Close number one albums: Led Zeppelin: lV and Physical Graffity, Judas Priest: Sad Wings,British Steel and Killing Machine, Motörhead: Overkill and Ace of Spades, Uriah Heep: Demons and Wizards, Look at Yourself and Sweet Freedom, Iron Maiden: Piece of Mind and Number of the Beast.
Martin - maybe here or for Contrarians but the album "Stampede" by The Doobie Brothers. Pete ranked it their 4th best. I rank it 1st. Give that one a listen!
Lots of solo artists that were previously in bands are in the fourth category. When you don’t have another band member anymore to balance your ego there’s a greater chance of a bad song or three on the album. John Lennon as a solo artist Paul McCartney as a solo artist. Joe Walsh Peter Frampton Roger Waters Pete Townsend
My top bands with no clear-cut favorite: Rush, The Stones, Genesis, Sabbath, AC/DC, BOC, Beatles, Rainbow, Tom Petty, Van Halen, Porcupine Tree, Steely Dan, Paul McCartney.
Bands with a clear #1: Pink Floyd (The Wall), The Who (Quadrophenia), Yes (The Yes Album), Led Zeppelin (debut), Hendrix (debut), Judas Priest (Screaming for Vengeance),

I'm grateful for discovering bands, so it's tough not to give extra weight to the album that opened the door.
There are only a handful of bands that my absolute favorite pops right in my head immediately. There are many that there are a few albums I go back and forth on....Great show and topic!
Always find it interesting when people come into a band at a completely different time to me and their choice is completely different
Some random takes on the topic
Beatles: Debut (US) and Abby Road
Stones: Out of Our Heads and Let it Bleed
Byrds: debut and Turn, Turn, Turn
Ac-Dc: Highway to Hell and Back in Black
Sabbath: Masters of Reality and Heaven and Hell
Priest: British Steel and Screaming
Metallic: Puppets and Black Album
Slayer: Reign and Seasons
King Diamond: Fatal Portrait and Abigail
For Aerosmith I always thought it was Toys in the Attic.
I like that one better than Rocks.
Yes, I think for many fans, Toys would be considered the best.
Get Your Wings 1974. Perhaps their heaviest album. Raw Gritty and Legendary
It's funny but my experience is that most people talk about the Allman Brothers Band albums At Fillmore East and Eat A Peach more than the first two albums
Yeah I think for me Eat A Peach would need to be included (and probably Brothers And Sisters too)...
Favorite studio albums, live is a separate list for me
1. Deep Purple In Rock
2. The Allman Brothers Eat a Peach
3. Rainbow Rainbow Rising
4. Traffic John Barleycorn Must Die
5. Roy Buchanan You're Not Alone
bands with a deep catalog to check out; Bride, Rez Band, The Choir, and It's A Beautiful Day
Funnily enough, MIke Rutherford once said that in his opinion Genesis didn't have one universally revered album as the Floyd had Dark Side and Yes had Close to the Edge. I still hear quite a few Genesis fans saying they prefer Selling England to The Lamb.
This was a fun episode. I would push back on “Never Before” and “Lazy” as great songs on Machine Head. That and “In Rock” are clearly the best 2 Deep purple albums.
Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow”
Santana…The first 3 1969-1971 are all 10 out of 10 classics
The Jimi Hendrix Experience…all three are drop dead classics.
The James Gang - Yer Album & Rides Again
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
For lots of good albums…but no 10’s
How about Johnny Winter, Rory Gallagher, The Marshall Tucker Band, Bad Company, Humble Pie & Grand Funk Railroad.
Again this was such a cool topic !!!
Deep Purple play Lazy at every concert and also 4 other Machine Head songs... But only one from PStrangers.
No brainier for me …… It’s “ Selling England by the pound “ by Genesis .
Cool show (although a bit on the short side...)
Cheers.
For Uriah Heep I have a really tough time picking a favorite from ‘…Very 'Eavy ...Very 'Umble’ through ‘Sweet Freedom’ as they are all so good and not one is played more then the others. They have good music after but those first 6 albums I have on equal level to each other.
I like Look At Yourself more then any Heep album
Heart passionworks is a great album I would choose as well
Great show guys
UFO are the kings of the fourth category for me. I like every album from Phenomenon to Making Contact, I wouldn’t give any of their albums a 10/10. Yet, Strangers in the Night is a masterpiece.
They have a comp album coming out on RSD.
They fit the 2nd category as well. I've went back and forth from Lights Out to Obsession more than a few times.
@@HuddshouseofRockNMetal The inclusion of 'Alone Again Or' on 'Lights Out' puts it just below Obsession in this book, because the track list on Obsession is so strong.
@@guadalahonky4002 Can't disagree, but my two favs from the two albums both come from Lights Out, which is why it's such a tough choice for me.
I like every album from UFO 1970 with Mick Bolton on guitar, to Mechanix with Paul Chapman on Guitar. My favorite songs are
Timothy
Evil
Treacle People
Silver Bird
Prince Kajuku
Flying
Space Child
Queen of the Deep
High Flyer
Too Much of Nothing
I Can't Roll Her
On With the Action
Martian Chronicles
Belladonna
Electric Phase
Lights Out
I Ain't no Baby
One More For the Rodeo

I would add Kansas to the one of two albums category - Leftoverture or Point of Know Return. Asia's debut for the obvious choice.
It's strange how similar your weather is Pete, to ours here in Nebraska... Weather is weird! 😆
So true about "Draw the Line". I love the title track but I ignored the huge flaws.
1969 April Wine? And I never found a full good Doobies album like The Captain & Me.
It’s hard to choose my favorite album by all the artists listen to
A band not mentioned that definitely has a consensus #1 choice: At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
That album completely destroys. No matter what genre you are into
I've had hard time choosing a best albums by Iron Maiden and Motorhead which are my two favourite bands.
No disrespect, cause I'm a huge maiden fan also, but your the first fan I've ever seen that likes a Blaze Bayley album, but ppl like what they like
@@Jason-nn9pl x factor is as good as any Maiden album.
@@ronaldeccles5147 really,I shouldn't call myself a huge maiden fan cause I don't like those albums!! That's laughable!!! 😆😂🤣!!! Do a survey & let me know how many maiden fans like those albums & get back to me & while you're at it do one for the Judas Priest Ripper albums cause I don't like them either!
@@Jason-nn9pl Lots of people do. I am not part of the same sort of musical culture, and there is not the same antipathy therre.
I would say 80s only is dismissing too much of their whole career to be a 'huge fan'
My personal favorites:
Painkiller/Unleashed in the East, Powerslave/Live After Death, Sabotage, Deep Purple in Rock, Saints an Sinners, Long Live R n R, Virgin Killer, Led Zep II, Live at Leeds, Revolver, First Rays of a New Rising Sun, Strange Days, Highway to Hell, Farewell to Kings, The Dreaming (Kate Bush), Jazz, Black Rose, Lick it Up, Orgasmatron, Plastic Surgery Accidents (Dead Kennedys), Melissa, Killing is my Business, Reign in Blood, Master of Puppets, Look at Yourself, Trespass (Genesis), Thick as a Brick, Brain Salad Surgery, Last in Line, Diary of a Madman, Breaker, Nothingface, Train of Thought, Jupiter (Atheist), Formulas Fatal (Morbid Angel), Spheres (Pestilence), Symbolic, Different Kind of Truth, Chemical Wedding (Dickinson), Crucible (Halford), Maze of Recycled Creeds (Gorod), Cosmogenesis (Obscura), In Becoming a Ghost (Faceless), Outer Isolation (Vektor), Ironbound (Overkill), Brotherhood of the Snake (Testament). But mostly, even the bands where I have another favorite, I agree the ones mentioned by Pete and Martin I would usually agree to be near the top one.
My favorite show on RUclips by far
Got a show idea for the Funhouse that came from the Prog Seat discussion the other night about wanting new studio material from King Crimson: Legacy Bands Where We Do (or Don't) Want New Albums. For example, me personally, I'm not even a big Billy Joel fan, but I think it's pretty cool that he hasn't released an album since 1993!

Yes, I concur. For me, The Game is their last great album.
Triumph for me would be Rock and Roll Machine. IMO they became very commercial after but that may be the appeal for others.
Great point on G N R (they have 5 albums of material). I choose different favs for Venom, Exodus and Megadeth
Great show. Respect to Pete for Argus - Wishbone ash.
An album that influenced many subgernes of metal
Another example of where the live album far surpasses the studio albums is J. Geils Band Blow Your Face Out.
LOL I feel like such a Music Dork as now I'm looking forward to the "Filler" Debate. ;-)
One example of filler is cover songs that add nothing new to the song
Queen,my favorite band since 1980.
favorite Queen album;Jazz
I have been a fan of Alice Cooper longer than I have been a fan of any one.
Favorite Alice Cooper album From The Inside
I like that he based the songs on what he experienced in rehab.I think Jack Knife Johnny is so under rated.A beautiful, but sad, song. When I saw him in 2019,he did Serious. That was a pleasant surprise.
Jazz splits a lot of the Queen fanbase but for me its right up there as one of their 70's classics. @@adamsmashups4839
A couple of bands that I love, but struggle to find a 10/10:
The Smiths
The Stranglers
The Clash
It's easier for me to answer when being asked my favorite album instead of my favorite song.
My favourite album, song, band changes on a daily basis
So many ads on my Smart TV now. Schucks lol 😢
I think it's just where either of us is in the haircut cycle - I'm obviously due!
Motörhead: No sleep til Hammersmith
ELP: Pictures...
King Crimson: In the court...
Voivod: Killing...
Priest: British Steel
Maiden: The number...
Metal Church: Debut
Beatles: Blue Album
Jethro Tull: Stand Up
Bob Marley: Survival
Saxon: Wheels....
Krokus: Metal Rendezvous
These are some of the bands I have a clear favorite album.
Couldn't pick my favourite if my life depended on it.
it’s drizzling & in the 40s (F) in east texas today
As a bass player - my favorite album is easy - the father of all bass albums - Oscar Pettiford’s “Another One” from 1955.
1) Black Sabbath: Sabotage
2) Ufo: Force It
3) Cheap Trick: In Color
4) Rush: Hemispheres
There are exceptions but I don't have much trouble picking a favourite album from a band's discography. A recent exception would be Enslaved.
A topic about ranking power ballads would be nice Pete
Currently my favourite band is Renaissance...very difficult to pick the best up to Live At Carnegie Hall (which I rate as 10/10)...all those before are 7-9...just depends on my mood
For me the perfect examples for category 4 are the Allman Brothers and Gov't Mule, I can neither choose a studio nor a live album, I can also not choose a specific era.i might also add Rory Gallagher, I like a lot of stuff throughout his career including the most recent live albums.
i really would't put Bowie and Porcupine Tree in the no-argument section
Neither would I. Many have lists with various #1 picks for Bowie. PT it's also "In Abstentia" as #1 often, but "Fear" is also considered best by many.
I would have thought Deadwing for Porcupine Tree
Hell Bent all day for me.
Mr. Popoff is my favorite Canadian as well!
Threshold, Stryper, Kansas, Flotsam & Jetsam: killer catalogues, hard to pick a number 1.
Keep Deep Purple out of the last category. They have several 9+/10 albums. In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head, Made In Japan, Burn.
The best bands are the ones where you have multiple albums that contend for your top spot. You know the bands where your top 3 to 5 could be a tie.
Man I would have a field day with a lot of these ties for #1 as well (the Deep Purple, Moxy, etc.)
Interesting. My favourites tend to be live ones. Pretty much throughout, perhaps predictably egs boc, acdc, kiss, deep purple, ufo, ted, led zep, camel, Sammy, Frampton, rainbow, trower, scorpions, srv, allman bros, thin lizzy, wishbone ash, etc
I might pick Whitesnake as a band I love but not having😅 one "10 out of 10" album, except for their 1st live album.
Great topic today Pete. Only problem with the video is that there were not enough ads.
Lots of solo artists that were previously in bands are in the fourth category. When you don’t have another band member anymore to balance your ego there’s a greater chance of a bad song or three on the album.
John Lennon as a solo artist
Paul McCartney as a solo artist.
Joe Walsh
Peter Frampton
Roger Waters
Pete Townsend
