Rod Clearancing - Ford 289 302 Stroker Rebuild part 5

- This is Part 5 of my Ford 331 stroker rebuild.
In this video I grind the bottom of each cylinder to provide clearance for the connecting rod bolts. The 289 crankshaft has a stroke of 2.87” whereas my new 331 crankshaft has 3.25” so the rod bolts come very close to contacting the bottom of the cylinder. 302 blocks have a slightly longer cylinder skirt so this may not be necessary with a 289 block.

@1:02 you didnt get one of those "self-clearancing" stroker kit?? lol J/K nice job!
I built my 331 stroker with a 65 289 block with no clearance issues. Just lucky I guess.
I’d read that some blocks have enough clearance. Plus, mine’s a 302 block which has slightly longer bores than a 289 block.
hi john , is the engine still running strong?
i have also build a 331 stroker from scat with the cvast crank
i have engine vibrations from 2000rpm and have started the engine without trans and clutch and i also have changed the balancer and flywheel to tesame 28 ounce
bought the strokerkit from summit it is a 28 ounce kit and they told me i dont need to balance it. did you balance the strokerkit?
Sorry to hear you’re having vibration issues. I paid the extra $350 to have my kit balanced by Eagle. Same part number but has a B in front (bought through Summit). It came with a balance sheet and the rods and pistons were stamped so you know where they go. I’m surprised Summit wouldn’t recommend balancing when the manufacturer does. If you’re absolutely sure you have the right flywheel for the kit then you’ll probably end up getting the rotating assembly balanced.
@@JohnLatrobe
I asked a summit racing expert before I bought the strokerkit.
But now I live in Belgium and here rebuild shops are asking between 1000 and 2000 dollars for balancing
Wow, that’s seems pretty high. Maybe you could ship the parts someplace that will do the work for a lot less. Shipping would be expensive but it may come out cheaper than locally. It’s really bad for an “expert” at Summit to steer you wrong like that.
What year was your block casted?
AFAIK it’s a ‘71 Mexican block. The casting number is D1ZM-6015-AA and the date code is 15L1. Everyone outside the US records the date different so maybe it’s 15 Dec 1971.
@@JohnLatrobe cool, thank you. I'm doing a 331 with a 1994 block. Haven't gotten to the "clearancing" part yet.
91 block here, scat rotating assembly, I might’ve been close, maybe it self clearance
