Ask any engineer their worst fear when approaching a railroad crossing and two fears are at the top: Tankers and school busses. The risk is just not worth it. Be patient or find an alternate route that avoids a railroad crossing or two. Expect a train on any track at anytime. Even crossings marked exempt may still see train activity. When in doubt, ask your city leaders if an exempt crossing's rail line is still active.
Where I live at least, exempt just means vehicles that normally have to stop at tracks before going over them don't have to (busses, tankers, etc...). There are two near me (one goes north one goes west) marked exempt and they are still in use once a week for the local to go a county or two over for a couple of businesses, it's just that it is used very little so chances of encounters is extremely low, the trains move at very low speed, and they don't have many cars attached like 8 at the most so it is no problem for the train to stop. The train reduces speed and almost stops at the road crossings even. Around here unused tracks don't last long, they are ripped out and turned into walking and cycling paths. If they were left abandoned or unused for years it might have signs saying abandoned or something. Another thing is they wouldn't still paint rail crossing marks every year on the road, leave crossing gates operational and powered, when the highway is repaved they wouldn't leave the rails going across, etc... They need to get rid of more grade crossing, and make cars and trucks go to a bridge or tunnel. Make the ones that remain one-way so they can't go around gates. Then have raised anti-truck barriers that raise from the ground.
When a vehicle gets stuck on the railroad tracks at one railroad crossing, the driver should get out and call the 1-800 phone number on a signpost that shows the phone number that a stranded driver should call in case a driver gets stuck on railroad tracks. If you get stuck on railroad tracks and cannot find the signpost that shows the phone number that you should call if you get stuck on railroad tracks, call 9-1-1. He should've just waited in the first place and he wouldn't lost his load and trailer. But at least he didn't lose his life.
0:32, Woah! What a big accident after the Norfolk Southern train struck the trailer causing lot of debris from inside in the trailer damaging the railroad signal. Woah! What a terrifying and messy moment from that debris from the semi truck. Great catch on this.
This shows never try to beat a train at crossings. The truck driver was clearly at fault and not NS for this crash. The lights were flashing, the gates were lowering, and the truck tried to cross but did not check his trailer and stopping on the tracks. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but it looked like one of the signals was struck and damaged and probably scrapped.
Took it off the 5th wheel neat & clean,, though the driver was just gonna go on to his destination and claim the trailer was behind him the last time checked
It's not like the one you see in movies when the good guys make an escape and the the 18-Wheeler truck hits and the train stops and the gasoline explodes and the train collision collapses and everyone is in danger.

When will people learn? Seriously. We need to get rid of quiet zones everywhere. Screw whoever thinks they’re annoying. The railroad was most likely built before they ever lived there. They clearly agreed they would have to deal with hearing trains.
It doesn't matter if the train blows it's horn or not, people pull this kind of stupidity regardless. The traffic bells, flashing lights and the drop gate should be enough warning that a train is coming. It is up to the individual to heed the massive warning. You cant fix stupid. And stupid can strike any time, any where.
@@moonbear5929 you are definitely right about that. But the horn is an extra safety device. Florida’s accident rates have skyrocketed because of quiet zones
Trains are basically twice the width of tracks. I see people position their vehicles just outside the track thinking they're safe, when they are only one or two feet away. The tracks are 5 feet wide, and the locomotives are at least 10 feet wide.
Not making any judgement here....there’s a small SUV which prevented the truck from making a wider turn. The SUV driver even tried to move out of the way. Of course, hardly anyone saw that part. Not to mention it looks like the truck was already into the turn when the gates came down.
Not sure that the officer helped the situation by starting the siren and distracting the driver more. But possibly he did help by clearing the intersection of other traffic. There was precious little time before the train was going to hit the trailer anyways.
Crossing closing cycles in the US appear to be far shorter than applies in Europe. A longer crossing cycle would possibly allow for a train to apply the brakes sooner, reducing the impact of collision.
Before the truck even began to cross the tracks, the flashing lights had come on, so why in the HELL would you proceed (ESPECIALLY in a tractor-trailer that's going to take extra maneuvering to make a tight turn?) Some people just don't think. I'm glad no one was injured despite the stupidity displayed here.
Good lord buddy...... did you not see the gates coming down....... I would like to see the reaction of this Engineer and Conductor........ I hope nobody was hurt.
Clearly the semi driver had lights and bells activation prior to turning. Option 1, it’s the law: stop. Option 2, violate the law, damage RR crossing barriers and GO STRAIGHT. But, oh no, driver had to do a 180 degree turn in a confined space in an intersection that does not allow for the turning radius of a semi doing a 180! All in all, this driver took a serious risk and lost. If only a 1 minute waiting period for the train to pass. Sigh!
Driver stopped out of habit when the officer turned on his siren. If he kept his motion he likely would've cleared the tracks and only got one ticket, instead of likely millions of dollars lost on packages.
that truck driver should have stopped...the lights & gates were engaged & he just kept on going...i'm relieved the train crew werent injured as well as other innocent bystanders

0:32, Woah! What a big accident after the Norfolk Southern train struck the trailer causing lot of debris from inside in the trailer damaging the railroad signal. Woah! What a terrifying and messy moment from that debris from the semi truck. Great catch on this.
I’m both train crew and MOW on a shortline, I see stuff like this literally daily. The general population is incredibly impatient and stupid
Wow I can’t believe the boxes fly out from the truck, and I believe it’s the truck’s fault for letters all of that happen not the train.
I am that red Ford that passed it was crazy
Wow! So you witnessed what happened?
I did 😑😑
We got hit by a piece of wood
This shows never try to beat a train at crossings. The truck driver was clearly at fault and not NS for this crash. The lights were flashing, the gates were lowering, and the truck tried to cross but did not check his trailer and stopping on the tracks. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but it looked like one of the signals was struck and damaged and probably scrapped.
Took it off the 5th wheel neat & clean,, though the driver was just gonna go on to his destination and claim the trailer was behind him the last time checked
OMG a truck got hit by a NS train! I Love trains ❤.
It's not like the one you see in movies when the good guys make an escape and the the 18-Wheeler truck hits and the train stops and the gasoline explodes and the train collision collapses and everyone is in danger.
Absolutely INEXCUSABLE!! The NS crew or innocent people could have been killed or injured due to one person’s stupidity.
I love the train horn but scary 😮
He said, luckily no one was hurt
That, my friend, WAS 10 MILLION POUNDS OF TRAIN!
I feel bad but the horn and crash was safifying
I just realized that those cars for the trains they hold cars I found that out a few weeks ago
0:29 I feel bad for the officer. If I were in his spot, I could only do so much to stop the accident. As the annoucer said, "There's nothing the officer can do." Only option? Alert other officers and keep rolling footage.
Now I know what happens to my Amazon deliveries!
Late news: NS 9419 had its P5 replaced with a k5la.
0:31 in train stopping don't stop in tracks or you get hit by a train
0:31 there go my order of spaghettios
ppl will always take a risk when it come to trains and trucks
NS 9419 is officially NS 4628 now after rebuilding. Let's hope it doesn't get the same fate again
Lots of people didn't get their Christmas presents that year
Most packages seem to be in better shape than when fedex gets their hand on a box marked fragile
that was food items as you can see that a refrigerated or reefer trailer
Not making any judgement here....there’s a small SUV which prevented the truck from making a wider turn. The SUV driver even tried to move out of the way. Of course, hardly anyone saw that part. Not to mention it looks like the truck was already into the turn when the gates came down.
Not sure that the officer helped the situation by starting the siren and distracting the driver more. But possibly he did help by clearing the intersection of other traffic. There was precious little time before the train was going to hit the trailer anyways.
I'm Glad the driver was'nt killed.
AMAZING video quality.
Imagine making the semi trucks a few feet taller than the locomotives
RIP The crossing signal
Crossing closing cycles in the US appear to be far shorter than applies in Europe. A longer crossing cycle would possibly allow for a train to apply the brakes sooner, reducing the impact of collision.
That depends on visibility. Tracks bend, have trees and foliage, train speed and load.

Never mess with a train, they are powerful and hard to stop
Sigh!
OMG I SAW SPARKS FROM THE
TRAILER
OR IS IT THE LOCOMOTIVE?
Driver stopped out of habit when the officer turned on his siren. If he kept his motion he likely would've cleared the tracks and only got one ticket, instead of likely millions of dollars lost on packages.
If the truck driver simply lowers the right hand side window to listen for the train...
Wow cool video
Thanks for the heart ❤
and this is why you never cancel an item from amazon.
Somebody is NOT getting their Viagra delivered on time. 😬
Good info video
I remember when this happened, was on the local news
Thank you for not blaming the railroad for all the crossings accidents.
that truck driver should have stopped...the lights & gates were engaged & he just kept on going...i'm relieved the train crew werent injured as well as other innocent bystanders
Too many gamblers! However, should the barriers be closed well in advance of the train arrival?
An excellent video. ♡ T.E.N.
Thank you for your good advise.
Norfolk southern, what’s your function? “ safely and on time” mean while in ohio, NS trains keep derailing.
I love how trains win over stupid people every single time.
Where is the actual footage?
That was very unsafe! HOPE NO ONE GOT HURT. 😰
These always seem to happen on railroad crossings that are on roads parallel to the tracks, I think roads running parallel or right next to tracks should be moved or removed.
Take that issue up with the town. Chances are the railroad was there before that street was even a glimmer in the town council's eyes!
There is absolutely no limit to a human being's ability to do something stupid.
That signal just got totalled
Also off to get scrapped
that's why i didnt get my amazon package
It’s faking meat you idiot you ordered meat from Tyson at Amazon? Stupid

Don't f*** with trains - ever! They will f*** you up if you do.
