    Truck driver failed to yield to the train. Lights flashing and gates going down as well as the air horn of the train being blown. Trucker may have avoided a collision (and loss of his job and even his CDL) by making a wider right turn.
    Never play with trains! It is almost always a losing battle. Even a lowboy hauling machinery is no match for a train, even though the train did derail and the disaster was just staggering.
    The most dangerous railroad crossing accident happened in Mexico when a tanker truck was struck by a train and exploded moments later. The helicopter crew filming the wreckage pulled back more than a mile and rose 1 mile up due to the intense heat.
    Ask any engineer their worst fear when approaching a railroad crossing and two fears are at the top: Tankers and school busses.
    The risk is just not worth it. Be patient or find an alternate route that avoids a railroad crossing or two. Expect a train on any track at anytime. Even crossings marked exempt may still see train activity. When in doubt, ask your city leaders if an exempt crossing's rail line is still active.

    • @specialed6357
      @specialed6357 4 года назад

      Where I live at least, exempt just means vehicles that normally have to stop at tracks before going over them don't have to (busses, tankers, etc...). There are two near me (one goes north one goes west) marked exempt and they are still in use once a week for the local to go a county or two over for a couple of businesses, it's just that it is used very little so chances of encounters is extremely low, the trains move at very low speed, and they don't have many cars attached like 8 at the most so it is no problem for the train to stop. The train reduces speed and almost stops at the road crossings even.
      Around here unused tracks don't last long, they are ripped out and turned into walking and cycling paths. If they were left abandoned or unused for years it might have signs saying abandoned or something. Another thing is they wouldn't still paint rail crossing marks every year on the road, leave crossing gates operational and powered, when the highway is repaved they wouldn't leave the rails going across, etc...

    • @algrayson8965
      @algrayson8965 4 года назад

      “Exempt” means that the crossing has to be flagged before a train may cross. Buses and hazmat trucks don't have to stop-look-listen at exempt crossings.

    • @algrayson8965
      @algrayson8965 4 года назад

      @@specialed6357- This is very incorrect. Within a few miles of where I am are several former road-rail crossings where the rails are still in place under the pavement. Some still have the RR XING paint on the pavement. One still has Xbucks in place. The railroad has been gone since 1984. The rails are gone, except in the Xings. The former RoW has not been made a trail-from-rail. Fences cross the former RoW. Driveways have been paved on the former RoW. The RR still owns the land and leases it out.
      In some places the local taxing districts opposed the RR abandonment, not because any industry was using the tracks but because the districts collected taxes on the RoW. If abandoned the RR would not continue paying taxes and no one else would buy the land at tax foreclosure.

You can only realistically blow the horn, cut the power and apply brakes and hope whatever is in the way moves in time. Unless a trail derails and rolls through a building or explodes due to faulty equipment or something it isn’t the fault of the railroad!

    Some years ago, I noticed a RR tie had been pulled up, apparently by the landing gear of a big rig trailer as indicated by some serious scrape marks. The tie was left in a position to derail the next train to hit it. I called the number on the emergency sign and all the person wanted to do was argue with me. I couldn't hang around to see what might happen, but the next day I checked back at the location. The tie had been moved out of the way by someone and just left there. The line is used by high speed commuter trains as well as freight.

    When a vehicle gets stuck on the railroad tracks at one railroad crossing, the driver should get out and call the 1-800 phone number on a signpost that shows the phone number that a stranded driver should call in case a driver gets stuck on railroad tracks. If you get stuck on railroad tracks and cannot find the signpost that shows the phone number that you should call if you get stuck on railroad tracks, call 9-1-1. I understand it is bad if a stranded driver waves at a train to stop their train crew or a train driver but the thing is that it is good when a stranded driver waves at a train crew or a train driver to stop their train but the thing is that sometimes it is bad when a stranded driver waves at a train crew or a train driver to stop their train because trains cannot stop quickly because of their size, weight, and speed.

    0:29 I feel bad for the officer. If I were in his spot, I could only do so much to stop the accident. As the annoucer said, "There's nothing the officer can do." Only option? Alert other officers and keep rolling footage.

    When will people learn? Seriously. We need to get rid of quiet zones everywhere. Screw whoever thinks they’re annoying. The railroad was most likely built before they ever lived there. They clearly agreed they would have to deal with hearing trains.

    • @moonbear5929
      @moonbear5929 4 года назад

      It doesn't matter if the train blows it's horn or not, people pull this kind of stupidity regardless. The traffic bells, flashing lights and the drop gate should be enough warning that a train is coming. It is up to the individual to heed the massive warning. You cant fix stupid. And stupid can strike any time, any where.

    • @CrazyDash9
      @CrazyDash9 4 года назад

      @@moonbear5929 you are definitely right about that. But the horn is an extra safety device. Florida’s accident rates have skyrocketed because of quiet zones

    Trains are basically twice the width of tracks. I see people position their vehicles just outside the track thinking they're safe, when they are only one or two feet away.The tracks are 5 feet wide, and the locomotives are at least 10 feet wide.

    Not making any judgement here....there’s a small SUV which prevented the truck from making a wider turn. The SUV driver even tried to move out of the way. Of course, hardly anyone saw that part. Not to mention it looks like the truck was already into the turn when the gates came down.

      Not sure that the officer helped the situation by starting the siren and distracting the driver more. But possibly he did help by clearing the intersection of other traffic. There was precious little time before the train was going to hit the trailer anyways.

    Crossing closing cycles in the US appear to be far shorter than applies in Europe. A longer crossing cycle would possibly allow for a train to apply the brakes sooner, reducing the impact of collision.

    Before the truck even began to cross the tracks, the flashing lights had come on, so why in the HELL would you proceed (ESPECIALLY in a tractor-trailer that's going to take extra maneuvering to make a tight turn?) Some people just don't think. I'm glad no one was injured despite the stupidity displayed here.

    Clearly the semi driver had lights and bells activation prior to turning. Option 1, it’s the law: stop. Option 2, violate the law, damage RR crossing barriers and GO STRAIGHT. But, oh no, driver had to do a 180 degree turn in a confined space in an intersection that does not allow for the turning radius of a semi doing a 180! All in all, this driver took a serious risk and lost. If only a 1 minute waiting period for the train to pass. Sigh!

    Driver stopped out of habit when the officer turned on his siren. If he kept his motion he likely would've cleared the tracks and only got one ticket, instead of likely millions of dollars lost on packages.
