I would think most metal musicians are relatively intelligent, because some of the songs they write are so complex it needs a certain understanding of mathematics. However often the drugs, alcohol and egos distort that

I was a drummer for a thrash band in the early 2000's, and we destroyed audiences on the weekends (we all had day jobs). Then I'd flip the switch Monday morning and became Mr. high salary Corporate Administrator during the work week, training employees, heading up division meetings, performing audits, negotiating labor union contracts, liasioning with the community and government, and on and on. Only a handful of co workers knew I played in a metal band, and were shocked that someone like me would "be involved in anything like that". And I don't point this out to boast, but how unbelieveably ignorant their prejudices were. Shit, we're people too right, and like Randy Blythe, Tom Araya and other metal artists, we can be as thoughtful, erudite, cultured, educated, civic minded, family oriented, and worldy as anyone. When I told them I was a hardcore surfer too, that freaked them out even more. They were either stupid or stuck up, ... probably both.
