I listen to melodeath and black metal from Europe (mostly Scandinavia), and it's usually in English, regardless of the band's native language. I appreciate that Батюшка lyrics are in Old Church Slavonic, for example, but they're doing it as a gimmick.
I have never listened to Lamb of God before…seeing how articulate and well spoken this man was and just how much admiration he has for other musicians not in his bands genre, i am going to give them a whirl. Song recommendations welcome :)
@@chrithwaddle Yeah, As The Palaces Burn and Ashes Of The Wake are THE albums to start with, followed by Sacrament and Wrath. The albums following these are also good, but showcase a gradual fall from the greatness they once had IMHO.
Just a personal one but Thelonious Monk is someone every music fan should hear. Although there are better albums, Underground will go down as being one of the coolest evenings I've ever spend chilling out to music alone. Kind regards. ❤️
I saw Bad Brains in the late 80s and they were amazing. As the end of the evening got closer, HR said "we don't do encores, we will keep playing if you want to hear us, but we won't be coming back on when we stop". Eventually the venue had to force them to stop by turning on the lights and kicking everyone out... killer gig
I seen em in the late 90s at the Hammerstein ballroom New York city with Murphy's Law. HR was different by then but they still put on one of the sickest shows I've seen. When they started playing banned in D.C. shit got insane. Skin heads with mouth pieces leveling people. H.R. stopped the song and gave a big speech about love and unity.
Totally agree! I've been mostly into punk and metal all of my life, but when i need some laid back, relaxing music, I almost always go to The Cure. Plus I'm a bass player and The Cure has some phenomenal bass riffs.
I also love John Coltrane. Giant steps is such a great record. Such a crazy technical record, as far as jazz goes it’s such a perfect example of musical controlled chaos

Was genuinely surprised to see Big Black mentioned. Definitely one of the most underrated punk bands out of the 80s, and you can really see Steve Albini's genius shine through and why he ended up becoming such a respected and legendary recording engineer. Also Bad Brains just might be the best punk band of all time.
My favorite Big Black line came from the album Songs About F**cking, and the song Fish Fry. I don’t even know why, but I just get so psyched we yells, “He had his 8-track playing, really fucking loud.”
The Cure was big for me in the mid 80’s. Really cool transition they made from more raw guitars to more ethereal tones. Boys Don’t Cry album is great, Seventeen Seconds etc. Was listening to all the standard Heavies at the same time. Metallica, Mercyful Fate, Motörhead etc. Sister’s was another awesome band back then, also had a major goth crush on the bass player…lol For me even though Killing Joke has more punk cred with their early albums, my fav is Night Time. There’s something about the sound of it. Loved (and still do) a lot of new wave and post punk from the late 70’s, early 80’s. New Order was another fav back then. Now I’m really into older country while still cranking Entombed and Reign In Blood..lol

Seeing Robert Johnson & (US Navy veteran) John Coltrane included in this list ups my respect for RB, and I’m not even a huge Lamb guy. I was curious to see his nonmetal influences/love. Did not disappoint 🤘🏻

In my opinion, good metal pulls from other genres to make something that's still abrasive, but different in a cool way. Part of what makes Lamb of God so iconic is because you can hear the southern drawl in Randy's screams and it makes all his vocals unique. You can listen to any Lamb of God song and know it's them because of that. The same applies to a band like Car Bomb that incorporates elements of hardcore punk and jazz in their music to make stuff that sounds really audacious and different at the same time.
Makes me so happy that other people can see their metal idol speak of other genres of music, letting them know that you don’t have to listen to one type of music. I listen to all of this, so awesome!
There's been a great deal of metal fans who love different genres of music: usually the only requirement being that the person is passionate and kind of characterful/original.

Not a Lamb of God fan but thought it would be interesting to see the list. Agree with Randy regarding the Bad Brains. As a Thrash metal kid in the 80s, the Bad Brains were my introduction to Hardcore Punk - my life changed completely. Discharge was a huge influence on Thrash Metal, but the Bad Brains were easily the greatest band I have listened to or have witnessed. Great list btw, good to see Goth Jazz, Post Punk Blues, Hardcore Punk, and Reggae being repped.

When it comes to the Jesus Lizard, I’d say Liar and Shot over Goat. But, that’s just my opinion. Although, Down has the best album cover I have ever seen on any album, In Utero included.
I loves The Cure, Sisters of Mercy and Joy Division years before I started to really listen to extrem metal and I can only agree, this list was awesome. From blue's, to cool Reggae and Discharge to Cure, SOM and JD.

The Cure, one of my favorite bands... and I'm a person who loves 90's metallic hardcore, groove metal, etc. I got into Joy Division because of NIN. Also, I love John Coltrane.
Serious question for you, P S... I've tried to get into Coltrane numerous times, but don't personally feel the same connection to his stuff as I do artists like Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk or Rahsaan Roland Kirk. (That said, I do appreciate "A Love Supreme" as a jazz masterpiece.) Something I'm missing when I listen to Coltrane? Something I should be listening for? Oh - and I'd love to see Randy's take on Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells". I've loved that album since I first heard it at four years old.
Robert smith from the cure actually began recording with a metallic acoustic on the album you referenced, further lending itself to the ear of a metal head. The cure are an amazing group.

Dude, thank you for mentioning Nick Cave! I know Bad Seeds, (BADASS!!) and now you've convinced me to listen to Prayers On Fire. I was buying Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, and Classic Rock all at the same time for years...But the first 2 albums I would consider a huge departure from my norm were Mazzy Star's "So Tonight That I Might See," and Counting Crows "August And Everything After."
This makes me smile ‘cause I was the only one of my (teenaged) peer group that lacked the fear to not only listen to, but “admit” to what I was listening to. I took so much shit for loving metal, and overnighting (alone) to see metal shows in a city that was accessible only by ferry for 14 hours a day - a thirteen year old kid showing up to hostels with 10pm curfews, well after 11pm. I grew up listening to country and folk music of the ‘50’s - ‘70’s - Johnny Cash, Charley Pride, Dolly Parton, George Jones, Bruce Cockburn and Gordon Lightfoot. I then found punk (Hüsker Dü & SNFU), metal, and all things ‘80’s synth - Cyndi Lauper and The Bronski Beat, as well as Dexter Gordon, Joe Pass and Aretha Franklin - Bach, Roxy Music and The Cure. Emotion can be found anywhere, you’ve just gotta be open to finding it.
My immediate thoughts were Joy Division and The Cure (I would've chosen Disintegration or Seventeen Seconds) both of which he touched on. Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left also comes to mind. Beautifully melancholy folk record. Riverman is a sublime song.
Coincidentally, back in 04' Lamb of God was actually my bridge band into what would become an obsession with metal (Ashes of the Wake is in my top 20) But my favorite album of all time, and the album I return to periodically to reset my musical pallet so to speak after too much metal or gangster rap is Kind of Blue, by Miles Davis. The track Blue in Green being my favorite song of all time.

Notably, Coltranes contributions to the album are so absolutely essential to the spirit of the project that for Kind of Blue to be lauded as a Miles Davis album is somewhat of an understatement. (and that's still saying nothing of Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb) Coltranes talent manifests so conspicuously throughout the arrangements of the project that it playfully entices a sort of "challenge accepted" nuance from Davis, who delivers a brilliant performance of raw and cathartic melancholy, laid bare as Coltrane confides in, expounds upon and immortalizes the somber, the haunting and the sometimes cheerful notes of a true American masterpiece
I love many genres of music and I have to agree Blue in Green is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard and Kind of Blue is one of the best albums I’ve ever heard. Don’t get me wrong, A Love Supreme is GREAT, but Kind of Blue is magnetic. I’ve always liked his interviews. He knows his stuff, and gave credit where credit was due, I got mad respect.
I looked this up and it's a great album. She has such a great voice. I stumbled across a Gathering song years ago, liked it, but then forgot about them. They seem like one of those indie or more obscure bands that are really good but didnt get known.
Seems easiest for me to get people into Metal with the Static X "Wisconsin Death Trip" album. Everyone is intrigued by the strange samples, disco-like rhythms and Waynes occasionally comical sounds and singing patterns. Endlessly satisfying and entices everyone's inner curiosity. 'I'm with Stupid' being a good introduction. It really is what Wayne himself said, "Evil Disco".

Lamb of God is not an accident. Every member is a musician of the highest order. They could literally play Mozart and do it justice. Incredible to hear Randy's nuanced and relation to Metal with all of hi picks here. This is gold.
To this day I Against I by Bad Brains is a brilliant album. I also really dig stuff by Sisters Of Mercy and Big Black. That Blythe fella has pretty good taste.
His picks are spot on. Heavy on post punk (cheers!) but those are good choices for showing how to create atmosphere and a compelling presence as a frontman

Man I love music of all sorts. Grew up a.metal head and of course was a huuuge lamb of God fan since I was in middle school. Had a shirt that of course my teachers didn't like but growing up I always like oldies as well, funk, disco, rock, reggae especially but always love the metal. Seeing how much randy knows and appreciates music over all just brings an even bigger appreciation to him and everything he's done and gone through himself to.become the solid guy he is today. Cool Werner Herzog shirt in Danzig motif.. I personally like the earlier SOM stuff more but Floodland was a big part of my childhood.. The Jamaican Dub suggestions are perfect, and the 80’s post punk and early UK hardcore stuff are essential, and of course Bad Brains..

Makes me so happy that other people can see their metal idol speak of other genres of music, letting them know that you don’t have to listen to one type of music. I listen to all of this, so awesome!
There's been a great deal of metal fans who love different genres of music: usually the only requirement being that the person is passionate and kind of characterful/original.
Yes but why is this all only English speaking artists..pretty narrow minded to be honest when there are way better musicians from other countries with non English music
Not a Lamb of God fan but thought it would be interesting to see the list. Agree with Randy regarding the Bad Brains. As a Thrash metal kid in the 80s, the Bad Brains were my introduction to Hardcore Punk - my life changed completely. Discharge was a huge influence on Thrash Metal, but the Bad Brains were easily the greatest band I have listened to or have witnessed. Great list btw, good to see Goth Jazz, Post Punk Blues, Hardcore Punk, and Reggae being repped.

Discharge played a local club to me, summer 1980. 40 people turned up. I'll never forget it.

I loves The Cure, Sisters of Mercy and Joy Division years before I started to really listen to extrem metal and I can only agree, this list was awesome. From blue's, to cool Reggae and Discharge to Cure, SOM and JD.

I really thought Massive Attack-Mezzanine was the be on this list. It give you that deep dark feeling that very few groups ever achieve.

The Cure, one of my favorite bands... and I'm a person who loves 90's metallic hardcore, groove metal, etc. I got into Joy Division because of NIN. Also, I love John Coltrane.
Serious question for you, P S... I've tried to get into Coltrane numerous times, but don't personally feel the same connection to his stuff as I do artists like Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk or Rahsaan Roland Kirk. (That said, I do appreciate "A Love Supreme" as a jazz masterpiece.) Something I'm missing when I listen to Coltrane? Something I should be listening for?
Oh - and I'd love to see Randy's take on Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells". I've loved that album since I first heard it at four years old.

Robert smith from the cure actually began recording with a metallic acoustic on the album you referenced, further lending itself to the ear of a metal head. The cure are an amazing group.

Dude, thank you for mentioning Nick Cave! I know Bad Seeds, (BADASS!!) and now you've convinced me to listen to Prayers On Fire. I was buying Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, and Classic Rock all at the same time for years...But the first 2 albums I would consider a huge departure from my norm were Mazzy Star's "So Tonight That I Might See," and Counting Crows "August And Everything After."
A Forest by The Cure has had a lot of great metal cover versions.
Loveless by My Bloody Valentine would be up there. It's so dense and heavy, yet you could weave cotton candy to it. Same with Grace by Jeff Buckley.
Looked for the Loveless mention; found it. It's like a healthy high.
This makes me smile ‘cause I was the only one of my (teenaged) peer group that lacked the fear to not only listen to, but “admit” to what I was listening to.
I took so much shit for loving metal, and overnighting (alone) to see metal shows in a city that was accessible only by ferry for 14 hours a day - a thirteen year old kid showing up to hostels with 10pm curfews, well after 11pm.
I grew up listening to country and folk music of the ‘50’s - ‘70’s - Johnny Cash, Charley Pride, Dolly Parton, George Jones, Bruce Cockburn and Gordon Lightfoot.
I then found punk (Hüsker Dü & SNFU), metal, and all things ‘80’s synth - Cyndi Lauper and The Bronski Beat, as well as Dexter Gordon, Joe Pass and Aretha Franklin - Bach, Roxy Music and The Cure.
Emotion can be found anywhere, you’ve just gotta be open to finding it.
Bad Brains s/t is one of the greatest heavy albums ever.

My immediate thoughts were Joy Division and The Cure (I would've chosen Disintegration or Seventeen Seconds) both of which he touched on.
Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left also comes to mind. Beautifully melancholy folk record. Riverman is a sublime song.

Coincidentally, back in 04' Lamb of God was actually my bridge band into what would become an obsession with metal (Ashes of the Wake is in my top 20) But my favorite album of all time, and the album I return to periodically to reset my musical pallet so to speak after too much metal or gangster rap is Kind of Blue, by Miles Davis. The track Blue in Green being my favorite song of all time.

Very much so! Notably, Coltranes contributions to the album are so absolutely essential to the spirit of the project that for Kind of Blue to be lauded as a Miles Davis album is somewhat of an understatement.
(and that's still saying nothing of Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb)
Coltranes talent manifests so conspicuously throughout the arrangements of the project that it playfully entices a sort of "challenge accepted" nuance from Davis, who delivers a brilliant performance of raw and cathartic melancholy, laid bare as Coltrane confides in, expounds upon and immortalizes the somber, the haunting and the sometimes cheerful notes of a true American masterpiece
I love many genres of music and I have to agree Blue in Green is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard and Kind of Blue is one of the best albums I’ve ever heard. Don’t get me wrong, A Love Supreme is GREAT, but Kind of Blue is magnetic.
I’ve always liked his interviews. He knows his stuff, and gave credit where credit was due, I got mad respect.

Just got back from seeing yet another EPIC performance from LOG, so I had to crawling onto RUclips to pick up this little nugget.

My all time favourite album is Souvenirs by The Gathering, just a phenomenal album that mixes Trip Hop with Prog.
The gathering is dope. A noise severe is my favorite.

I looked this up and it's a great album. She has such a great voice. I stumbled across a Gathering song years ago, liked it, but then forgot about them. They seem like one of those indie or more obscure bands that are really good but didnt get known.
Seems easiest for me to get people into Metal with the Static X "Wisconsin Death Trip" album. Everyone is intrigued by the strange samples, disco-like rhythms and Waynes occasionally comical sounds and singing patterns. Endlessly satisfying and entices everyone's inner curiosity. 'I'm with Stupid' being a good introduction. It really is what Wayne himself said, "Evil Disco".
Yeah, wisconsin death trip was a stroke of genius for that era.
Yes!! Static X was and still is great for that. Seriously I can imagine so many people would have gotten into metal cause of the great late Wayne Static🤘

Lamb of God is not an accident. Every member is a musician of the highest order. They could literally play Mozart and do it justice. Incredible to hear Randy's nuanced and relation to Metal with all of hi picks here. This is gold.

To this day I Against I by Bad Brains is a brilliant album. I also really dig stuff by Sisters Of Mercy and Big Black. That Blythe fella has pretty good taste.

Quickness was my first Bad Brains, still my favorite BB album.
Robert Johnson's guitar playing influenced the likes of Joe Perry Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, the list goes on and on. He was also an amazing vocalist, storyteller and songwriter. 🙏❤
Man I love music of all sorts. Grew up a.metal head and of course was a huuuge lamb of God fan since I was in middle school. Had a shirt that of course my teachers didn't like but growing up I always like oldies as well, funk, disco, rock, reggae especially but always love the metal. Seeing how much randy knows and appreciates music over all just brings an even bigger appreciation to him and everything he's done and gone through himself to.become the solid guy he is today. Bad Brains is probably the most underrated bands ever. I would have loved to have seen them with COC back in the day.
I saw that tour in 1989 or 1990. COC was touring for technocracy but the bad brains had the other singer not HR. It was still cool but not the same
@@jlobiafra I have seen COC more times than I can count. They used to always play at The Mad Monk in Wilmington, NC. The place closed down, but I saw tons of bands there when I was at Camp Lejeune.

Cool Werner Herzog shirt in Danzig motif.. I personally like the earlier SOM stuff more but Floodland was a big part of my childhood.. The Jamaican Dub suggestions are perfect, and the 80’s post punk and early UK hardcore stuff are essential, and of course Bad Brains..

Great picks, I own all but the Prince Far I. I would think that something in the dark ambient genre like Lustmord would be right up just about any metalhead’s alley if they have an open ear.

This is what any true musical fan need to do… explore music.. listen to your favorite groups influences and work back. Sisters, Cure, Joy Division- massively influential in so many great artists who themselves became influences.
