You should make a pilgrimage to the Henry Ford Museum, Greenfield Village, Dearborn, Michigan. They have, in that single location, quite a number of examples of the early Newcomen (1750), Watt, Boulton and Watt, atmospheric engines, Corliss,,, etc.. One of the Watt engines is a replica built in London 1930,, the majority of the engines are all collected originals. The startling thing,,, all in a single location. And, the original Ford Motor Car. Plus,, several hundred, Train engines, aircraft, historic autos. If you want to see engines, there may not be a better place to go, anywhere in the world.
You can spend days there, it's an extraordinary place.

@Pokemonfan 2795 not rilli
There is another cool engine video coming soon so stay tuned!
Will it be better than this juvenile nonsense?
Sam Thompson oi, you a hater? Or a mean fan? Prob a hater.
"Everyone has probably heard of this iconic piece of history"
You vastly overestimate my random knowledge.
If the Crofton looks like a "fine piece of art", then my garage is a diVinci
It might have been fun for you to make but it was more fun for me to watch as I didn't have to do all the work. Thanks for posting another great video.
A relative of mine owns the oldest engine in Ireland, built in 1889.
What town is it in? (Irish engineer just curious)
Tea party city
The actual oldest diesil engine is is coolsprings power museum, the biggest gas engine show in the world. it is in PA.
Thanks a lot for making a wonderful vlog on vintage engines...that 1779 brewery engine is simply a wonder existing today and working ...wow that was quite peek in the past.
Thanks, I will try to visit some of the more antique engines in the future and make videos.
If you are going to steal my videos, how about an acknowledgement please?!
What do you mean
@@edwardthor7763 It`s ok. They have credited it. When I viewed it on a phone app, the credits were not visible.
Smethwick. The w is silent so smethick is the proper pronunciation. Interesting video nevertheless.
0:29 RIP Terry Jones (on the left) and Robin Byers (on the right). Engine now owned by James Dyson (the vacuum cleaner man!) who also appreciates the historical significance of iconic British Engineering.
Pity Dyson doesn't feel the same about British workers, as he super expensive hoovers are made in the far east now. When you are making the kind of profit he makes from each machine, moving the work offshore is done from one reason only and that's greed, and he has the cheek to promote the Brutishness of his designs.
I am neither supporting or promoting Mr Dyson; just stating that he is the current owner of the jet engine and appreciates iconic British engineering.
dos-a-dos actually means back to back
The term is still in use in the US in the square dance term "dosado".
English pronunciation lesson for Merkans (Americans):
...shire as used at the end of names of county names is a short sound, "..sher" and not a long one. Merkans typically say "..shy-yer". The noun "shire" (as used by Tolkien!) has a longer sound, but only one syllable.
Several counties, and often their county towns, have non-obvious pronunciations, and we find Merkan attempts quite funny. Thus "Worcestershire" is pronounced "Wustersher", "Leicestershire" is "Lestersher". "Derbyshire" is "Darbisher". "Berkshire" is "Barksher". Incidentally, an abusive term "berk" (pronounced as you would expect) is actually rhyming slang from the phrase "Berkshire Hunt".
"Smethwick" also has a non-obvious pronunciation. The "w" is silent, and the "th" is long, as in "the" rather than short as in "thin".
This is far and away the best old and unusual engine video.
Technically speaking the u boat engine is antique considering it is now 2018 and 2017 is 101 years ago
This video was very well researched, earned my subscription.
Things these these aren't built like they used to be where they could run for decades into centuries and still run perfectly with a bit of restoration
These days you can't drive a Mercedes 5 years without losing 90% of what it's worth and having to do thousands of dollars of work to it
THE WORD OF GOD PREDICTED THE MESS THE WORLD IS IN THESE DAYS!
IT IS TIME FOR AN ETERNAL COMMITMENT: THINGS ARE ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE; we are near or already in the time of Tribulation, as described in the Holy Bible's books of: Daniel 7-12, Luke 17, 21, Matthew 24, Mark 13, Revelation 4-21, Isaiah 2, etc, etc. [Matthew 24:7 "For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes."]
We are seeing: massive deception, unchecked amounts of blasphemy, self-loving perverts allowed to murder babies, perverts indoctrinating little children, perverts drawing little children into their godless obscenities, treasonous and depraved men running the world, most world leaders in the process of ushering in the NWO, lawlessness, the depraved and perverted legally protected, orchestrated crisis used to destabilize nations, laws enacted to aid the ungodly and to terrorize the righteous, perverts ransacking our nation, wars and rumors of wars, gross climatic changes, famines, pestilences, earthquakes, fires, volcanic eruptions, signs in the sky, the persecution of Christians, a mass-exodus of false-Christians from the church, and all of the usual world problems happening in greater number and magnitude than ever before. We are also witnessing the rise of the kingdom of the Antichrist(NWO); he will pretend to be the savior of the world, however, after 3 and 1/2 years of rule he will unleash all hell upon the Earth. His kingdom will consist of a: One world religion, One world government, and One world monetary system; all of these have been predicted within the Holy Bible, thousands of years ago.
WHY IS THERE SIN IN THE WORLD?
In the beginning God made the world perfect and free of sin. He gave the world to our forefathers, Adam and Eve, as a love gift. Adam and Eve sinned and gave the world over to Satan. Since then all of mankind has been born in sin and subjects of Satan, with a one-way ticket to everlasting-hell.
WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT?
There is nothing that can be done for the world at large, the world will continue on getting worse, and the right judgment of God will be unleashed in an ever increasing manner, a manner that only the repentant and forgiven person will be able to endure. HAVING YOUR SINS FORGIVEN, AND TO BE RECONCILED TO GOD, nothing can be done for the world, however, individual persons may experience forgiveness from God. If you have a desire for God's forgiveness, God is already at work in you. [ There is nothing you can DO(WORK) to be saved. If God gives you faith, you may plead for salvation in the name of Jesus Christ. "What is impossible for men is possible in God." All those that come to Him will in noway be rejected. ]
Jesus Christ said, not only that, "I'm the way, the truth and the life, and no one can come to the Father but by me.", Christ also said that, "NO ONE can come to Me unless the Father draws him." --obviously, if both of these are true, no one can will themselves to believe. God must first attract the sinner towards Christ in order to be saved.
Salvation from sins and true transformation comes when your sins have been forgiven, if you feel led to do so, plead for God's mercy, in the name of Jesus Christ to save you from your sins, and wait for His response --Christ said that, 'if you ask you will receive'. Forgiveness and restoration with God comes through Christ's work and payment of sins upon a cross, Jesus is the only one that did the work for our salvation --This forgiveness is for all those that will come to believe in Him. THE HOLY SPIRIT COMES AND GOES AS HE WILLS, and so it is with salvation, because it's an act that is carried out by the Spirit.
--John 14:6 [ Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me." ]
--Acts 4:12 [ "There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name(Jesus Christ) under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved!” ]
Knowing that the penalty for sin is death(eternal torment in a Lake of Fire); the Bible states, -- Rom 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.", and that we all have sinned, --Rom --3:23-- "for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God", God's method of salvation is a work of the Holy Spirit of God, purchased through the death of Jesus Christ, --John 3:8 "The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don’t know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”, and as it is with the wind, the Spirit will come on the repentant sinner, when God draws that sinner to His Son Jesus Christ, --John 6:44 "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; and I will raise him up in the last day.". All a person can do is to plead for God's mercy, as in -- Luke 18:13 "And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.".
Nice blast from the past I thank you.
Interesting, well researched video. I don't know if I'd call Henry Ford's Model T "infamous" since that word is applied to something evil. Further, it is pronounced IN-famous. Not in-FAMOUS.
The bashful speedboat particularly kneel because comma uncommonly overflow modulo a puzzled freckle. lewd, true risk
The Crofton engine is amazing to esperience.
Please send me your information.
The Welland was not a Rolls Royce product. Welland was the manufacturer.
DM 884WS-150 "Everyone has probably heard of this iconic piece of history"?????
Approximately 1 HP per litre. Nowadays, 100 HP per litre is no problem. Wow
Imagine number 9 with open headers🤔🤔
I love this, everything looks well researched.
Hey, good to hear, thanks! It did take some time to figure out which are truly the oldest running engines heh
Some of these begs the same question as the ship of Theseus. The question of whether an object that has had all or most of its components replaced remains fundamentally the same object. There are many incredible builds that are called restorations that are clearly not.
I have a 200 year old hammer; I replaced the head twice and the handle 3 times.
What is your secret for a long life 200 years?
I was thinking the same thing, but stuff wears out. When you buy a car you take for granted that it is going to need maintenance, new tyres, battery, alternator maybe, clutch exhaust those types of thing, but when you come to sell it no one would expect you to describe it as modified or not original.
The Boulton &Watt no longer helps make beer? Its mechanical soul must be so sad.
It may be sad but is does not "wine."
Scooter George...You'll hear no "booze" from me for that pun
lol beer and win puns
wine*
did you know that torque exists ??
Beeeeerkshire England lol
It's Berkshire
Lovely clips though
that doesn't help, you mean 'bark-sheer'
i've noticed something........machines built before WW II still work well, so where is all the newer hardware today?........you do the math.......who's shroomin' who?
In reality very few machines built before WWII still work well, just like very few machines built today will still work well in 2090. It's all the same.
@@CaptHollister so, explain to me about all those steam engines, among other old things made as early as wwI, and THOSE still work.
@@jimw83296 What percentage of total production do they represent ?
@@CaptHollister i can't give exact numbersbut, for some of these machines, we are talking from someas little as 40%, and for the rarer we could be talking as much as 90+%
I totally forgot I subscribed to you, because I usually dont like "Top 10 list" channels, but your Videos are pretty good in quality and theyre not 10-Minute-Video-Chashgrabs
Sweet....allthough i am missing wind and watermills..technicly they are engines ;)
Dirk Pitt: What is an engine? What is a motor? These terms are still being debated. Have you seen a street sign or a billboard sign oscillating in a wind storm? Technically, those are engines; i.e., mechanical devices which are driven by some external energy source. Fuel, wind, water, animals, and humans are external energy sources. Animals and humans are fuel driven engines which power machines.
Your video always fukig ad
Sooo, how about the John Bull? Oldest working steam locomotive in the world, housed in the Smithsonian. First locomotive in the US, first used in 1831. How'd that not make this list?
It's bark-shhh not berk-shi-er
Regarding no. 6, the Grenville Steam Carriage dates from 1875 and still runs. Interestingly, when they introduced number plates, it was given 'Y1'. Y stood for Somerset, 1... you get the idea!
Thanks for the interesting video. Some of the names have 'landmines' for non-native speakers, though. So, if it helps you in future, 'Welland' is pronounced with 'Well' accented, then 'and' is almost 'und', 'Berkshire' is pronounced like 'Barkshir' with the accent on 'Bark'. 'Smethwick' has a silent 'w', the 'th' is pronounced as in 'the', and the first syllable is accented. Then the 'h' in 'Birmingham' is also silent, with the accent on the first syllable. The first syllable in the majority of English place names is accented. Native English is a confusing language for speakers of U.S. English. 😉 Looking forward to seeing some of your other uploads.
what about sierra #3?
It would have been even more fun to watch if there weren't the click-bait at the end spoiling the last scenes.
first jet engine was german !
that sub engine is actually a 'cam in head" arrangement because the cam is to the side of the valve gear instead of directly above the valves like a true ohc layout...just saying
I went seafishing once on a vessel from 1933 with the original engine, didn't do much fishing. :)) #engineroom
the Government in Sydney Sold the Powerhouse Museum. not sure whats going to happen with that engine
MORE DATA, LESS FRAP...
I regret that the commentator does not reflect the tone of the oldest engines. The sing song voice does to compliment the video.
This list is bad, i know tonnes of engines still running from around year 1900
10hp..... 1000lb/ft of tq... HP doesn't mean squat.
2 more from Denmark. Hammel vognen 1887 teknisk museum Helsingoer, Ellehammer plane engine 3 cylinder from 1905. Both still running and original.
'Smethwick' is pronounced 'smeth-ik'.
That computerized voice gives me the shits
Why the fuck do these people use CGVoice?
That's an actual person not a computer voice. I can tell because at 2:40 he says "Boy did I pronounce that wrong" and I don't think that a computer voice was say that that it had pronounced something wrong.
Re the Smethwick Engine, you don't pronounce the 'w' in Smethwick.
And today US car manufacturers do not give an engine warranty more then 3 yrs.
Thumb nail, first video... Awesome
That Welland jet engine should be in the air not on a stand..
Why do you need to add the thump thump thump sounds. Bloody annoying.
THE OLDEST JET ENGINE RUNNING?! There is literally a Me262 that still capable to fly, and it was the second Jet fighter in the world, that uses the god damn first jet plane's engine, the Junkers Jumo 004 are the oldest running
..but not an original one, The first repro airframe flew in 2002. They use engines from General Electric, because the original Jumo units lasted about four hours.
@@DaimlerSleeveValve Ok I didn't count if it was repro or original, if thats the case, you are right.
Why did you say that the Ford model T is "infamous"?
Your first engine is a whittle jet. First designed in 1933
Most enjoyable vid. I wondered why you'd disappeared, you've changed your name! The Otto Engine is extraordinary. Incidentally, I think it's pronounced doh-a-doh which means back to back which might refer to the seating arrangement. Thanks for sharing mate.
Thanks, I'm not going anywhere heh. I plan on making an update video & there are some really cool levitation projects coming up in the next few months! I pronounced a few names incorrectly unfortunately but it was still a great topic to research and learn about history on engines.
you forgot to tell that the one I Denmark is a double piston
FROZEN MAN.
50 cents says jay lenos got that dos-a-dos in his museum now
#5 looks like a street light post with a flywheel on top
intersting video, why do some saddoes have to be so nasty?
it's Smethick not Smethwick. the w is silent.
Crofton engine is in Wiltshire not Berkshire
I love India, look what they get too do !!! ( 6:10) In the U S we would be arrested for doing that.
4:10 !!!
That Uboat engine didn't power anything like the first submarines in the world, mankind has been messing about with submarines for a very long time, and the first powered submarines ran on steam in the later 1800's. Learn your history if you are gonna make historical videos dude.
The first submarine / submersible vessel was "The Turtle" from the American Revolutionary War. It was human powered. It was built in 1775. Learn your history if you are going to make rude comments, dude.
Actually Mankind has been messing around with submarines long before the The Turtle was launched. The Turtle's distinction was that is was the first use a submarine recorded in to actually engage in combat. The first one we know was actually built was in 1605, and it is a very well known rumor that Alexander the great was supposedly lowered in a what was essentially a Diving Bell. There is some other talk about ancient submarines, but 1605, a submarine built by one Magnus Pegelius, is the first one we know for certain. By The way, the Turtle failed to attach a mine to the ship it was trying to attack, the first recorded successful sinking of another vessel by a submarine was of course the famed CSS Hunley, which was lost with all hands, probably, we now think, of a fatal flaw with the trim system. I hope you've learned your history if you are going to call comments on historical videos ,calling them out for being inaccurate (which is very damaging to history as a whole) Rude. Dude.
Misinformation is pretty rude, especially in a historical context, broski.
I'll Edit this to say, Diving Bells are not "submaines" all submarines by nature are powered and, before mechanized power existed, humans were it, aka "the power."
You sound a bit like sips from sips and shin..
Very nice engine 👍🌈
It's always funny to hear an American pronounce cities names in England. Hmmm, how do you pronounce Worcestershire?
LOL not even close :o) Try Woose-ti-sheer
So am I ;o)
The M.E 262 is the oldest running Jets since Germany was the first to developed it
The Welland engine in this video was built in 1943 and still runs. There are no running Jumo jets from that period. Incidentally, there were flying jet-powered planes in both England and Germany before the Me262, but the Me262 was the first to enter front-line service.
The Germans did have the first operational jet aircraft, but the problems of materials procurement held them back.
The German engines had a service life of no more than 25 hours before needing a major rebuild. This was because of the lack of alloy steel that would stand the temperatures in the exhaust turbine. When ME262's were captured Allied test-pilots had no idea of how close the engines were to exploding because the maintenance records were missing. I think that Frank Whittle had similar problems.
The Rolls-Royce Welland is a Power Jets Ltd W2B. The Gloster Meteor later used the R.R. Derwent, which was another Power Jets design. Power Jets Ltd being a company set up by Frank Whittle in 1936, but he had a patent for an engine in 1930.
awesome, more of these please!
"In-famous"? A ha ha aha....
"#2, the oldest engine in the world..."
"and #1, the oldest engine in the world..."
brilliant
#2 The oldest engine in the world 'that provides rotatary power'
#1 The oldest engine in the world.
Commenting without listening = Brilliant 👍
@@Danger_mouse did you mean "rotary"? or what he actually said: "rotating"?
making a comment about 'commenting without listening" when you actually didnt listen yourself... brilliant
Hilarious
Vin Diesel invented the Diesel, then he became a movie star.
how do you know?
whose narrating this the looney tunes martian?
good answer? im going to buy an ACME bomb shelter
I meant 4:10 !!!
Oi gente 🙋
Well land. It’s pronounced well land.
????????? What' your problem? I hear him say Well land, or possibly Vell Land. In much of Europe, w is pronounced v, and v is pronounced w. Maybe you have not traveled abroad and do not know of which you speak.
Nice

That British jet should have stayed in the scrapyard where it belongs
That is just the most stupid comment I have ever seen. That is a priceless piece of history. You belong in the scrapyard.
Hello JD
hey there
so one of your comments said another engines video is coming soon, does that include game engines or something like that:)
It's just a video on model engines, like lego/3d printed ones. I am working on a Doom (game) video too. Would you like to see more gaming stuff?
It's your channel dude you upload what ever you want and I will watch it.
I liked your doom wads videos but you don't have to make videos related to gaming, this was interesting. sorry if this reply was late.
"BirmingHAM" is in Alabama. The city in England is called "BIRMINGham". Thank me later.
It's almost misleading to talk about horsepower with for example the MAN DM12 and engines like that one. Yes the hp is probably correct, but thats because the rpm is so low. It's probably around 2-300 (often lower) at peak rpm. The torque on the other hand is very strong because of a long crankshaft and a heavy flywheel.
Dude, it is pronounced BIRMING-UM, not BIRMING-HAM
Okay just a rule of thumb for you anything older than one hundred years is antique not vintage. Vintage is anything older than 20 years, but younger than 100 years
Did I hear him correctly? "This contraption (sic.) was invented before the four-cycle ignition". What does an ignition scheme have to do with the operational concept that Otto himself conceived of not long after this was built?
(I understand what this guy was getting at, but his mistaken choice of terms renders any education value (that this video should have had) completely void.) I just have to state my hypothesis again, that should never have needed to be said the first time... 'Stupidity and functional illiteracy are being spread by contact with RUclips production tutorials'.
The fact that there was no compression shouldn't be a big surprise, since the Watt steam engines used for many years to pump water from mines produced the displacement of their pistons by atmospheric pressure from the condensation of steam, rather than it's expansion like the better known engines of more recent times. So there's nothing strange about starting out their inventing and development with the more simple designs, and then evolving those concepts into a workable, more powerful and efficient system. Luckily, Otto made a conceptual leap with the 4-stroke cycle that put the ultimate expression of his designs much more within their grasp. (Breathe, damn it!)...
Interesting video montage of other peoples videos, however it is let down by your dreadful pronunciation of names! Welland should be pronounced "Well'nd", Smethwick should sound like "Smeth'ick", Berkshire should sound like "Barksher", Boulton should sound like "Boolton", Bury in London should sound like "Berry", Birmingham should sound like "Birming'am", etc.
Jeez, why so critical?
David Who the fuck cares, besides you?
PaintHerWhite: I think anyone that likes things done properly would want something as basic as this to be correct, after all people are going to be quoting these facts, and would not want to be seen as stupid.
Brad Penrod: Because if such basic things are incorrect, how can we believe the rest of the information that is given.
EF: No, there is no doubting the rest of his information. There is no way even a well educated American can be expected to know the pronunciation peculiarities of multiple place names in England and vice versa. Lighten up.
The damp virgo intraperitonally manage because peru rheologically overflow under a helpful gazelle. helpless, gleaming cylinder
(4:38) - "Berkshire" is pronounced "bark-shuh".
And (5:35) - "Smethwick" is pronounced "smethick" , the "th" part, as in "the".
And, finally (5:41) - There is no "ham" in "Birmingham". It is pronounced: "birming'm".
A simple Google search would have told you all this, had you taken the effort.
Bodragon why so critical? Even a well educated American wouldn’t know exactly how to pronounce a british place, just as a British person might not know how to pronounce places like Illinois, Maryland, Cleveland or others. This video is not about british places, it’s about engines. He had no reason to ‘do a simple google search’ on an almost completely unrelated topic. Lighten up, your giving your fellow countrymen a bad name.
@@bluelightningfilms57 I realize this is an old thread. I'm not sure there is a right or wrong way to pronounce places. I live in Western Pennsylvania and the locals all mispronounce the town names. The names are either from the French who came down from Canada, the Indians who lived here, or the last name of some founder from Ulster or elsewhere (an old saying the English guy may get but I doubt you do). I live in Eau Claire, which everyone pronounces You Clare. My kids went to Moniteau high school, which everyone pronounces Monitaw. Even the easy ones like Emlenton is pronounced by the locals Emalton. So are the locals wrong or right? I think it boils down to conveying an understanding. BTW Indian words are mispronounced by everyone. Words like coyote or Kentucky are spoken incorrectly. The Ohio river, for example, was not recognized by the Indians. They considered the Allegheny to go to the Mississippi.
