At first hearing, many might think this is a song of an ambitious person who will never be content with what they have achieved. Everything sung in the chorus will never be enough...*if the person is without their darling sharing it all with them*. The way the music places much more emphasis on the 'Never Enough' part instead of the 'Darling Without You' part is pretty clever and really works well with the story of PT Barnum not realising till later that it would all never be enough...at least not without his darling wife.

She knew her husband was hungry for the spotlight and all she wanted the whole time was him.

So many things are happening here beyond the musical performance. We see a frightened Jenny Lind about to sing for the first time before an American audience who never heard her perform. We see PT Barnum first worrying that he spent a fortune to arrange the concert tour of a woman without any firsthand knowledge of her skills as a singer. Then we see ever so much the hint that his attraction to her may be more than professional. We see Charity Barnum recognizing that her marriage may be in trouble. We see Barnum's partner (can't remember his name) daring to hold the hand of the African American woman until he sees the withering gaze of his shocked parents. We see the stunned reaction of the newspaper critic who viewed Barnum, until this moment, as a huckster and a fraud and is now completely mesmerized by Lind's performance and finds himself joining in the standing ovation. All of this during a four minute song. Stepping outside of the movie for a moment, we recognize that the actress portraying Lind is not actually the singer. We never actually hear the singing voice of the actress. Ironically enough, no one today knows what the actual Jenny Lind sounded like. She lived and died before the technology was available to record her voice. Sadly, the real performances of Jenny Lind are lost forever.
Some might argue that Barnum's attraction never went past professionalism--he was more attracted to her talents and what it would do to prove the people who spat on his success wrong. Charity might've been worried about the extent in which her husband would finally decide that he had everything he wanted, since he spent his life trying to prove people wrong.
@@jamiemorgan6490 It's a bit frustrating that we know what musical pieces Lind performed but we don't know what she sounded like. Of course, those pieces would likely not be commercially popular with today's audience. (On the other hand, while no one today knows what Abraham Lincoln sounded like, no one would rewrite those speeches to use contemporary slang.)
Most people say that the wife's face was knowing that she wasn't the one anymore,I personally thought the look was more of a "you will never have enough" look
Typical Sarah Pretty much. Charity was never worried about losing P.T. to Jenny. She was worried about losing him to his ambition, because Jenny represents everything he’s ever wanted: fame, fortune, recognition.
This entire scene was, is and a will forever be riveting. It’s as if the angels have descended from the heavens to sing. How anyone can hit the not like button shocks me
neil stucky i was amazed at how fascinated i was by this scene. She was breathtaking. I was disappointed when i discovered that she wasnt actually singing. But she was still very captivating.
I literally screamed at the screen when hugh Jackman looked at her like this... I mean he has a wife and kids, a man shouldn't watch another woman except his wife like this!
This is movie magic 👌 the way his wife looks sad as she sees the way he looks at her in awe. It was never about love... it was about opportunities for him.
yeah. So basically PT wasn't looking at Jenny with genuine love. He just saw all the profit and opportunities he could get out of her singing talent but Charity (PT's wife) misunderstood it as a love.
@@des1748 I don’t think Charity misunderstood it at all. She sees the way he’s looking at the crowd, after all. She knows exactly how important fame, fortune, and success are to him. I think she was more concerned about losing him to his ambition, not to Jenny.
@@NeverendingTori Yes; I've read several accounts about the nature of the relationship between Barnum and Lind, and it was not romantic, Barnum was all ego and ambition, and Lind could only stand nine months of touring at his pace before she got out of her contract.

This whole Scene is great. First of all, it’s an incredible song, sung beautifully, and I have never seen such a good lip sync. A lot of beautiful voices but her presentation, acting, expression is stunning. Standing in one spot, unlike other performers, and her expressions, eye contact, subtle body movements, hand and arm movements......she is directing the orchestra and the crowd. She is reaching deep into their hearts and bringing forth all the goodness and love deep inside everyone. WOW!!!

Kaleigh Liller. No she's right Loren Allred is the real singer Rebecca is the actress the directors took Loren's singing and placed Rebecca's face but she never recorded her actual singing
Kaleigh Liller As it is stated on IMDB: Rebecca Ferguson's voice was dubbed by Loren Allred. Ferguson had studied music and admitted that she can carry a tune but since Jenny Lind, her character, is considered the best singer in the world, dubbing her voice would be in service of the movie. However, in order to get into the role, Ferguson insisted on singing the song in front of the extras while filming.
That's because when they filmed her she was actually singing, that's no imitation and that's why it looks so real. It is. In post they replaced her voice with Loren's, but she is not lip syncing, there's a difference.
I’m crying. The lyrics of the song say ‘These hands could hold the world but it’ll never be enough’ and I made a connection. Zac was holding Zendaya’s hand, but then he let go because Zendaya was his world, but she wasn’t enough..
@@scooterboivevo3185 exactly, she's not "enough" for his parents cause Zac's family comes from higher class and Zendaya is just a no one, from a freak show on top of it.
Bruh this whole scene... his breath be6 taken away, which is expressed in such beautiful manner as the audience roars in bliss, they are out of focus until she gazes at him... Beautifully done.
Imagine there are no recordings, no radio. All music is live, so exposure is limited. You hear about this fantastic singer from overseas. You invest a fortune promoting her and getting her on stage. She shows up to perform, and it's Whitney Houston. Everybody had high expectations, but she exceeds them 100 fold and brings the house down. You're not in love with her, you're in awe of how much money you're going to make.
This is my first time hearing this. WHAT.........A.............VOICE! It is so moving to hear this song that its like a religious experience--- like something out of mythology. And those lyrics. I was overwhelmed by this. Maybe the most beautiful song ever written, and my standards are high when it comes to that. I could not hold back the tears.

I’m a 70’s rock fan and an 80’s heavy metal fan, but this gives me goosebumps all over the place every time I watch this. First few times I saw it I welled up. Absolutely moving piece of wonderful music and vocals.
I think it was Phillip (Zac) who let go of Anne's (Zendara's) hand, because he spotted his parents whispering disapprovingly about Anne, which caused him to automatically let go of her hand. That would have hurt Anne that he let go, but another reason she walked away was most likely because she also saw the parents whispering disapprovingly about her, would have been hard for her to stay when she knew they were watching. I'm really glad that Phillip stood up to his parents in a later scene, though, and, instead of letting her go after she walked away, like this time, he followed her, to try to comfort and reassure her.
I know it’s not her but I love how well she portrayed her vocals. Really highlighted her voice with the cries and power without trying to hard. Great job tapping your lower register voice. Best voice in the movie
This is just spectacular. I listen to it every day. And this is by far the best lip sync performance I have ever seen on film. Until I looked into it, I had not idea she was not the original singer... And in turn, I am now a Lauren Allred fan! AMAZING!
This gives me chilss EVERY TIME she's so goooooddd. And the way Barnum (Hugh Jackman) was so astounded by her amazing voice never fails to get me. He's in tears because he knows she will save his show. 😭

He let it go bc he likes the girl singing now
So many things are happening here beyond the musical performance.
@@yagadoobigidibobbibigabiga38 Nicely put.
Dead City bang on pal, and charity was more concerned about his ambition than the singer
I mean she’s also singing a musical theatre song rather than something operatic so this is nothing like what Jenny Lind would have sounded like
@@jamiemorgan6490 It's a bit frustrating that we know what musical pieces Lind performed but we don't know what she sounded like. Of course, those pieces would likely not be commercially popular with today's audience. (On the other hand, while no one today knows what Abraham Lincoln sounded like, no one would rewrite those speeches to use contemporary slang.)
There is just so much deep soul in Loren Allred's voice
This is the best way to explain our resilience and why we continue to fight! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

@@NeverendingTori EXACTLY
The song tightrope was her feelings for that look
I agree with you, but a small part of me think she was just thinking about her voice (aka how much moonnneeeyyyy) but i agree with you

SashaTheBooklover yeah, besides, she was lip syncing while Loren was the one singing.

Absolute masterpiece musical number. Rebecca's nuanced movements and Loren's voice are both heavenly in every respect. Rebecca is a Goddess on stage.
If they ever do a remake of Philadelphia Story, she has to play the Katherine Hepburn role. She definitely has that goddess style

I so totally agree. An epic performance for the ages. 😱😁👍
Agreed. Beautifully written song, magnificently performed, with masterful editing. I hope I live long enough to see this show performed on stage, and to watch a theater audience while this song is performed live. It will be epic.

WOW!!!
The greatest showman is one of those movies that makes you feel like when you are there and watching it, you feel every move and the power and magic of the movie urges through you as if you are there. Idk how to explain but that was me describing how I feel
I also got the feels👌. The cast is amazing, the songs is amazing, the story line although it was based of a true story was amazing, just to sum it up, the movie as a whole is amazing😂👌
Loren Allred is one of the best singers ever! truly majestic song
Mary J that's not Loren, its Rebecca the original
Kaleigh Liller. No she's right Loren Allred is the real singer Rebecca is the actress the directors took Loren's singing and placed Rebecca's face but she never recorded her actual singing
Mary J she lip synced
Kaleigh Liller As it is stated on IMDB: Rebecca Ferguson's voice was dubbed by Loren Allred. Ferguson had studied music and admitted that she can carry a tune but since Jenny Lind, her character, is considered the best singer in the world, dubbing her voice would be in service of the movie. However, in order to get into the role, Ferguson insisted on singing the song in front of the extras while filming.
Kaleigh Liller she lip sync it Loren was the one singing
Even though she lip synced, she really did well in imitating the breathing while singing
That's because when they filmed her she was actually singing, that's no imitation and that's why it looks so real. It is. In post they replaced her voice with Loren's, but she is not lip syncing, there's a difference.
She was singing, but it was to Loren's pre-recorded playback. She still had to get the timing of each word and phrase down perfectly...and she did.
ohhh ok that's good to know!

I’m crying. The lyrics of the song say ‘These hands could hold the world but it’ll never be enough’ and I made a connection. Zac was holding Zendaya’s hand, but then he let go because Zendaya was his world, but she wasn’t enough..
Nah it's because he didn't want his parents to see him holding her hand
@@scooterboivevo3185 exactly, she's not "enough" for his parents cause Zac's family comes from higher class and Zendaya is just a no one, from a freak show on top of it.
No it was because of his parents
That's too deep and I don't think everyone can understand the context behind it---
I got the context and i agree.
Bruh this whole scene... his breath be6 taken away, which is expressed in such beautiful manner as the audience roars in bliss, they are out of focus until she gazes at him... Beautifully done.

But yes, I love this song and I sing it without knowing in math class. No matter how many times I listen to this song, it'll never be enough!
TBNRHarris He’s not talking song here but Jackman’s acting. Personally I think same. He is a very good actor. (Song - beautiful, of course!)
The singer is Loren Allred, in case you were wondering😊
Look for the singer Morisette Amon cover. It will blow your mind.

why did they let go?
SavageChewBaka becuase the movie takes place back then and she was black, he was white. and blacks and whites couldn’t be together back then.
@@elsys7546 ah I've never seen it, but I really should
SavageChewBaka yeah, it’s pretty good.
She should have won the lipsync battle 😍
