    Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed “The Colbert Report,” which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. The program received two Peabody Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several unwelcome shoulder massages. It won two Emmys for Outstanding Variety Series in 2013 and 2014, both of which appear to have been lost in the move. Colbert is pronounced koʊlˈbɛər, according to Wikipedia. His understudy is William Cavanaugh, who will be hosting The Late Show approximately one third of the time. Good luck, Bill!"

    Jackie Roosevelt Robinson is an example of a Great American and I'm grateful for the sacrifices he and his wife made. I watched Part I of Ken Burns documentary and different people, non-African Americans were lifted up because of J. Robinson's bravery. I'm not a sports fan but I enjoyed Burns' doc.

    Today, April 18, 2016 is the 70th Anniversary of Jackie Robinson's first game for the Montreal Royals (The Brooklyn Dodgers top farm team of the International league). They beat Jersey City at Roosevelt Field by the score of 14-1. Jackie went 4 for 5 with a Home Run and three singles. Almost a year later, April 15, 1947 he debuted with the Dodgers.

  • @caelroighblunt1956

    Umm... John Adams helped write the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. He did not own slaves at any time in his life. Thomas Jefferson did indeed own slaves. But, he manumitted them at his death, he by all accounts treated them well and paid them a stipend, and he was in favor of abolition. He lived in a time when slavery was common throughout the world and he knew that, especially in the southern states, free Africans were routinely re-enslaved and treated harshly by other whites. So to say he didn't see the conflict is to say that Ken Burns hasn't read enough history.

    • @Jefferdaughter
      @Jefferdaughter 8 лет назад +1

      +Caelroigh Blunt - YES! And for those ignorant of history, Jefferson inherited his slaves upon the death of his wife's father. AND they could not simply 'go north' as slaves were legally held at that time in the Sates north of the Mason--Dixon line. If I remember correctly, Jefferson did free at least one (several?) slaves who could 'pass' as white, giving them clothing, transportation, letters of introduction, and a little money to start a new life. AND it is essentially impossible for people today to even begin to wrap their heads around just how 'revolutionary' it was to make a statement that 'all Men are created equal*' - in an era when many rulers had their positions by what was known as 'the divine right of kings'. And essentially everyone else was thought be in their position in life largely through Divine will. To make the declaration that all Men were created equal was almost unimaginable. (Now we seem to have forgotten that 'equal' does not mean 'the same'.)* At that time, all educated people knew that the word 'Man' when capitalized meant people of both genders, while the word 'man' when not capitalized referred to male humans. The Declaration may have been far more forward thinking than we imagine.

    Actually, Thomas Jefferson did see the hypocrisy in owning slaves.
    People constantly misunderstand the whole situation-Thomas Jefferson was worried that if just up and took everyone's slaves away that it would break up the country, and he didn't want to do that, he wanted the country to be completely whole.
    Look what happened when Lincoln put pressure on getting rid of slavery: it essentially divided the nation. just as Jefferson feared.
    And although Jefferson owned slaves, he didn't treat them like utter garbage like most slave owners did-there were even a few instances when a slave would run off Monticello and yet wouldn't be sought for-Jefferson understood it all.
    If there was any racist president it was Andrew Jackson-probably the most disgusting human being that's ever held the position of president.

    • @ZombieKilla2008
      @ZombieKilla2008 8 лет назад

      Sime
      He did more than treat his slaves "well"
      He and Thomas Paine and Benjamin Franklin all worked to establish that there be no more importation of slaves-and yes, he did have a mistress, but to say he went ahead and assume he raped her is moronic and just flat out wrong.
      Jefferson even wrote about his mistress in some letters, he thought she was beautiful-says a lot, ay?

    • @sime1407
      @sime1407 8 лет назад +3

      +ZombieKilla You should really read his "Notes on the State of Virginia" then. Jefferson made clear that he believed that blacks were inferior to whites. I'd also share this article: www.nytimes.com/2012/12/01/opinion/the-real-thomas-jefferson.html
      --> Jefferson was always deeply committed to slavery, and even more deeply hostile to the welfare of blacks, slave or free. His proslavery views were shaped not only by money and status but also by his deeply racist views, which he tried to justify through pseudoscience. [...]
      But while many of his contemporaries, including George Washington, freed their slaves during and after the revolution - inspired, perhaps, by the words of the Declaration - Jefferson did not. Over the subsequent 50 years, a period of extraordinary public service, Jefferson remained the master of Monticello, and a buyer and seller of human beings.
      Rather than encouraging his countrymen to liberate their slaves, he opposed both private manumission and public emancipation. Even at his death, Jefferson failed to fulfill the promise of his rhetoric: his will emancipated only five slaves, all relatives of his mistress Sally Hemings, and condemned nearly 200 others to the auction block. Even Hemings remained a slave, though her children by Jefferson went free.
      Nor was Jefferson a particularly kind master. He sometimes punished slaves by selling them away from their families and friends, a retaliation that was incomprehensibly cruel even at the time. A proponent of humane criminal codes for whites, he advocated harsh, almost barbaric, punishments for slaves and free blacks.

Love Sam Cook, Nat King Cole, all of Motown, Chuck Berry and now - I'm infatuated by Ella Fitzgerald. Never heard of her? Google and listen. She's got the voice of an angel.

      +anton o'faolain - the one in imovie and final cut pro, etc? yes that's him. its basically panning and zooming on still images to give them a dynamic feel when put into a documentary. Otherwise it would feel like you're watching a two hour slide show with narration.

      Gee, thanks for that. I'd heard the term so often but was to dumb or whatever to learn about it.

      +anton o'faolain once you know what it is, you'll notice it in a lot of documentaries, especially ones about pre-movie periods, even ones not by Ken Burns.

      Thanks. I've been discussing this with my son, who is also interested in the technique. We don't get a lot of American documentaries in Australia - mostly British. I love American history, having had to study it at senior high school (far more interesting than Australia's European/British History), and as I get older I like to brush up. I found Ken Burns' docos on the web. He's a terrific story teller. It's so refreshing to hear the narratives of native Americans and other minorities rather than the Hollywood propaganda of the last 100 years. I'd love to see an Australian Ken Burns highlight the plight of Australia's Indigenous people, especially the tragedy that unfolded in Tasmania (Van Diemens Land). Why someone hasn't documented that story in a Ken Burns' manner, I don't know.

    Jackie Robinson was not the first person to break the color barrier in the majors. Not to discredit Robinson's achievements in the 1940s, but Moses Walker was the first to break the barrier and become a professional member. Even he wasn't the first black man to play a game in the majors. Sorry, but Ken Burns gets it wrong, again.

      There is a verse in the bible for every situation you will ever face in this life. Of course you can ignore it but you do so at your peril because the writers of this book faced the same things we are facing today and there are instructions on how to deal with it. The verse quoted lets us know that we are not alone in our situations and that we can look to history or others to find solutions to our problems today.
