Herb Washington, a world class sprinter but non baseball player, was hired by Oakland A's owner Charles Finley to be a designated runner for the 1974 season. In 1974 Herb never batted, but stole 29 bases and scored 29 runs. He had an embarrassing moment in the ninth inning of Game 2 of the 1974 World Series when, as the potential tying run, he was picked off first base by Dodger ace reliever Mike Marshall. (You can see a clip of this on youtube) Nevertheless, he received a World Series ring as the A's defeated the Dodgers by winning four out of five games. Herb was released by the A's the next year and never returned to baseball. In his later life he became a successful businessman.

Herb Washington has a unique place in baseball history. He was the only full-time pinch-runner. Played in over 100 games and never batted and never played the field. He also never played in the minors.
For those unfamiliar, Bill James tells a story in his Historical Baseball Abstract that has a less positive reaction of a Caucasian player to his African American teammate's home run. They all can't be feel good stories.

What a handsome young man Mr. Robinson was. What a brilliant smile. That sculpture is very well done, a real work of art.
You are so right. Jackie Robinson was a work of art.
Salute to all of those who stood up on behalf of what was right.
The movie 42 was super good.
There are a few folks like George that make you proud...proud to be part of a better America!
2020...i miss shaking hands without being self conscious of the consequence
that handshake is quite quaint
If for nothing else, thanks for showing Robinson's World Series steal of home AND Yogi's furious reaction to the safe call. Never gets old.
It was the correct call. Yogi was wrong. Another camera angle, rarely shown, makes it clear.
Am I imagining it or does that umpire look like he disapproves the handshake?
No it's not your imagination!
America needs to be better now. It will take all of us. Every shape, creed and color. It's the right thing to do...
My dad loved and admired this man. Me? I was too young and had to grow and learn ( or should I say, learn and grow? )
This is making me tear up.
Why no closed captions? Would love to use this for my classes.
"It's right things to do"
don't forget Branch Rickie is how Jackie got to play in the first African American to play in the all white MLB in the first place !
I know that now too because I watched the movie 42, it was a great movie.
1st saw that pic when I was 6 years-old!
Wow!
Wonder sculpture Marc. Amazing accomplishment! Congratulations.

I wondered what happened to Herb Washington and I'm glad he made it big after baseball

It must be 2020.
You can always tell a journalist's politics by the kind of questions they ask.
What a joke. Prove no one else’s wanted to shake his hand. Why not show the video instead of a pic.
What video?
Of his teammates brushing him off after his first homerun. The media just files racism.
The point is, there is no video.
are you serious?? lol. it was in the 1940s...
No sir. You're the joke.
YES!!!... But, don't put it up until after TRUMP 2020, or the BLM will Tear it down.
You're part of the problem not the solution.
do you have any idea what blm does
You're a stain
