SAME! For as many machine knitting channels that I follow, I'm disappointed that this came to me through a FB group. Happy I've found this, in any case.
You should design a ribber for this machine and that will be useful for so many. The current plastic bed machines dont have ribbers ! Thank you and good luck
I bought a Bond Machine recently and this video is very interesting to just see a version I could make at home with the ever-so decreasing availability of cheap and accessible knitting machines
I had to pause to look up creative computing because that sounds amazing. I’d love to know more about this field! This video checks so many boxes in my brain
Wow, the second computing degree who built a knitting machine in the last year (or two?). maybe we are about to hit a renaissance for all of the knitting and sewing file standards that haven’t been updated since the 90s.
I love your work! I just stumbled upon your csm video. Then i was curious about the cone winder and found out about your flat bed knitting machine. I'm very happy to have found your channel. I'm looking forward to watch your longer videos and new videos in the future! As an upholsterer i know about the history of weaving machines. Great example of early programming.
I'm so excited to follow this project and build one myself!! I love your videos about this, your extensive research, your way of explaining concepts, your devotion to the craft without losing its humanity and the required skill. Consider me a fan!
If you could design a fairisle carriage for a 6.5 mid gauge that would work with Silver reeds LK150 you would be extremely rich. Thousands of people have these & the fairisle carriage are extremely rare. People pay almost $1000 for one
Ohhhhh this is so cool!!! When I was thinking about the thesis path for my masters in computer science I was trying to come up with a project that would show how closely linked fiber arts and computer science have been since the Genesis of computing. I ended up choosing a path where a thesis wasn't required but it's so cool to see people pursuing a similar train of thought!!!! I'm so excited to watch more!
Ada Lovelace, the inventor of computer programming, used punch cards for her computer and said it wove mathematics like the Jacquard loom wove flowers. That loom also used cards. In that way computers are actually based on textiles.
This is incredible!! I love all the various subjects you touch in your video. You're the missing link between the old machines and the new technologies. This could go really far!! I'm going to follow you and also share your channel with other people that will be blown by what you've published.
Yo, how is this video not blowing up bigger than this?? This is so damn cool! I likewise lean heavily into technology and crafts, and am a serial project collector. 😁 I've toyed with doing a 3D printed embroidery setup to assist with making plushies. Very interested in seeing how this project comes together as a source of inspiration! Sidenote: god, openSCAD is terrifying, but I respect you for using it.
this is a fascinating rabbit hole I've found myself down culminating in buying a vintage knitting machine, can't wait to see more I'd love to contribute if there's a way to
Omg!!! I was looking for a flatbed knitting machine 3D printed last year. So excited to find someone making one 😮🎉❤ I ended up printing a CSM and buying a Bond… but I may have to try to make your design too 😂 Thank you so much and I’m excited to watch the whole series 🎉
Also I had to rewatch today 😅 I am so excited about what you were saying about personal digital fabrication - and noticed the “choose which one is cheating” in the background and could not stop laughing 😂
This is intriguing. And I applaud your creativity and ingenuity. I'm subscribing just to see what you end up doing. I've recently discovered knitting machines and that people were doing 3D printing to create their own. I'm enjoying seeing what people are coming up with and inventing.
This is so cool! This is like no other. Usually knitting machines are pretty expensive, so having the ability to 3d print one will be a game changer. My university offers free 3D printing, so I would love to make one! Will you upload the files, and if you do, when do you plan to?
Have you tried using bulky weight yarn (size 5 or 6) with this machine. I'm super excited by your research and cant wait until the STLs are available! I would be more then happy to be a tester if you are ever in need of one!
This is so cool! Have you ever thought about making a ribber as well? I'm looking into 3d designing and printing knitting machines, and to figure out how to make one with a ribber.
Amazing! I am looking forward to watch your design progress! Impressive that you built this in openSCAD. Are you familiar with the Kniterate project? This was in interesting open scource approach once.
Thank you!! I plan to publish the files for the machine once I have all of the "how to build and use it" videos done... hopefully within a couple of months but I don't have a firm release date in mind yet.
hi from an elderly lady not being able to knit by hand. where can the files be bought. ( 3d printer at home). Its just what I need. made a csm and it works perfect
I have seen in another 3D printing video that there is a problem with tiny plastic filaments rubbing off that you could breath in and that will penetrate the skin like needles you don‘t see or notice. 🙈 Apparently lots of safety measures (that most probably won‘t follow, let‘s be honest) and applying coating on the printed goods can help minimize this … but I wonder if this problem wouldn‘t be even worse when you 3D print textile production goods like this knitting mashine. 🤔 They are under much stronger use with threads constantly rubbing over their parts … and to make matters worse, those threads that may rubb off these tiny filaments from the 3d printed mashines will be worn on our skin as clothing. 🤔 I don’t have a good feeling for projects like these because of that. Will normal people who wanna just have fun with 3d printing and maybe get a cool knitting mashine invest in safety a lot? I highly doubt it. They‘ll cut corners or never know they need to take precautions just like the many folks who got sick from trying epoxy crafts. Imagine you knit a sweet little piece for your toddler on a mashine like that and your kid‘s skin is covered in tiny plastic needles unbeknownst to you. That‘s scary. 😰🙈
Not the place for this, but i do want to put in my two cents that i think generative ai is great as a tool, a new type of brush to use or idea generator for when you need a touch of inspiration. I think the misuse of this tool is the problem. And the use of others art without permission.
I mean together with the pictures in the background. ...which seems damned strange consider nothing about the whole project is patentable. As such claiming ownership of manually operated sewing seems a like a bit of an overreach. Yes. I am willing to say that afforsable chinese 3D printers did more for the average consumer being able to buy or use one, than the reprap movement. As the anal attitude some have in regards to "no commercial use" means that technology remain resgricted t filthy rich & people who know people who can make it for them.
I absolutely love what you are doing with this!! I created a makerspace in my library and have knitting machines available for folks to use (among lots of other things). I'm a machine knitter myself. 🧶 I'm in the middle of building a circular sock machine (files from Thingiverse). If you need a beta-tester for your design (which looks INCREDIBLE), I'd be happy to try it and offer feedback. I have 3D printers and a supply budget for filament and parts. This would be fun!
I have no idea how i am 5 Months late to seeing this, but the algorithm has finally fed me this and it is AMAZING!
SAME! For as many machine knitting channels that I follow, I'm disappointed that this came to me through a FB group. Happy I've found this, in any case.
same!
algorithm go brrrrrrrrr
Brrrrrrr
Which acronym?
I'm watching the initial ads and.....what have you done???? I can't imagine the amount of time and research that went into it! Wow!
finally! i've been waiting for someone to design a 3d printed knitting machine for years!!
Well a decent one at least, I've tried some open source stuff but none of them stood out
this is a really cool project, as a software engineer, a 3D printing nerd and someone who loves working with yarn I love it!
I love your introduction about what so great about knitting, I never heard such a comprehensive expression of why knitters love to knit. Well said!
You should design a ribber for this machine and that will be useful for so many. The current plastic bed machines dont have ribbers ! Thank you and good luck
Amazing!!! Super happy the algorithm put you in my queue!!! 🎉❤🎉
This is incredibly exciting! I haven't hand knit in a long time, but I love the blend of technology, design, and engineering going into this project!
Thanks Shep!

You deserve all the love in the world. Truly you are the second-most awesome non-famous person I’m aware of. I hope someday there are statues of you!
This is great! I have several machines but I love that there is so much interest in machine knitting now. Thank you!
Only wish I had this experience about 50 years ago . . . I may unpack my knitting machine though. Thank you!
"Works on My Machine" Damn I know this. Both with software and my CSM operating experience
this rocks, you rock. I know nothing about knitting or CS but i love making, and your passion shines through. thanks for making this. :)
I love knitting, i wish i could finish one project per hour... 😂

how many do you think would pay $500 for one? could design it, but not sure its worth the time investment.

yay, you made it in OpenSCAD!
Beautifully done video already! 1:07
Very nice hope to see more
this is so fantastic, I wonder if someday can make a 3D printed ribber for my LK 150 knitting machine
