I like that Franklin wasn't immediately ignored, that Scottie was still concerned for his friend. It was a nice touch, and it gives the story some weight and heart to have a bittersweet beginning.
Plus it drives home the point that Scotty will have to deal with 2369 by himself. I wonder how the story would've been affected if Franklin had been there? What would he have done in 2369?
Yeah I read the book like 30 years ago and I like how they mentioned Franklin
But Geordi was extremely insensitive in ignoring how Scotty just lost a crewmate-- which is what was lost in TNG, in there was little actual bonding among characters, which fortunately was revived somewhat on DS9.
@@SovereignStatesman Voyager nails this, makes the show a lot more enjoyable to watch for my 21st century brain.
One thing that I absolutely love is that Scotty doesn't seem cross or shocked when he is told that Worf is a starfleet officer. If I had to read way too much into it I'd almost call his expression happy, possibly an indication that he's glad their mission in ST6 did really bring long-lasting peace to the Klingons and the federation.
I, myself, call it a simple tense surprise. You have to understand that even after the Cold War between the West Capitalists and Communists, there had to have still been tension between the two.
This is just an example of how much time actually passed while being trapped in a transporter cycle loop. The idea of a Klingon in Starfleet never crossed even the likes of his generation, considering how little time passed after the Khitomer Accords.
Except that’s undone by Deep Shit 9 when the Klingons declare war on the Federation and kill thousands.
Never noticed the intense glance between Scotty and Worf as they stepped off the transporter until watching this clip again.
Werid that Worf never brought up the fact that he MET Scotty in the TNG episode Relics
@@Excalibur01 I don't understand what you mean? Are you talking about when the DS9 crew went back in time to the Tribble episode and Worf, Bashir, and Odo were in the same bar as Scotty was when the bar fight broke out?
@@OptimusWombat Yes. Worf has met the older Scotty and would recognize him even though he would look much younger
Also Worfs grandfather was Kirks and McCoys defense attorney
The only thing Scotty looks at is the resonator array that he then immediately comments on.
0:58 "Didn't Kirk die before you got stuck there?"
"Well, so did Spock. He got better!"
Canon after Generations - It was generally accepted that Scotty got a little confused coming out of transporter suspension to remember what has happened to Kirk.
Non-canon/Shatner novels even after the incident on the Enterprise-B none of them really believed Kirk was truly gone.
@@develynseether4426 Yes but it is also completely believable that Scotty just never gave up hope that Kirk was still alive. After all, they never found Kirks body. For all they knew Kirk was just caught in a time warp or trapped in an alternate universe or something like that. It wouldn't be the first time that bizarre things had made Kirk disappear. Plus, Scotty knew from first hand experience that Kirk had a history of regularly surviving certain death so he developed an unshakable faith in him, not to mention personal loyalty to the point that he was willing to follow him anywhere even if it meant a likely death or a certain court martial. He was so loyal to Kirk that he sabotaged the Excelsior and then was instrumental in helping him steal the Enterprise just so Kirk could go and try and save a dead friend. If that's not personal faith and unshakable loyalty then I don't know what is.
Star Trek Generations, still screwing up the Lore..
It interesting to note, Shatner brought forth an idea to resurrect Kirk, but Rick Berman rejected his idea and did First Contact
@@Wolffen51 "Resurrections are for Spock, Data and Nelix only."
"Owwww! That hurts! Do you not see the sling on my left arm? Oh yeah, you're blind. Well anyways, quit touching it!"
I don't think the arm was broken. I think he hurt his left shoulder or tore a muscle. The reason being that there is no cast on the arm.
@@g00gleminus96 Are you watching all the videos of this episode? Is this your first time watching Star Trek? Have you ever been injured?
1) He was just rescued from a crashed ship, therefore he has had no medical attention.
2) This takes place in the future when casts are no longer used. Doctors just wave a magic wand (scanner or whatever) and the bone is healed)
3) In the next video, he is told by Dr. Crusher that he has a hair line fracture (broken bone). Whether it was that or a torn muscle or damaged ligament/tendon or dislocation, it would hurt like hell for someone to touch it, especially give it a slap like Geordi did.
Just noticed a plot hole others may have noticed before, thanks to the movie Generations. Scotty was on the bridge when Kirk was presumed dead after the ship was damaged by the Nexus Ribbon.
SO, this version of Scotty shouldn't have expected Kirk to have come to his rescue like he mentioned about a minute into this clip. :P
Something I wish they would have considered when making the first TNG feature film. ^.^;
LOL! Amen to that. I remember thinking that very same thing when I first saw that movie.
Well, it could be handwaved by saying that the 0.003% signal degradation caused some memory issues.
@@LetsTakeWalk I believe that is the canonical explanation.
@@LetsTakeWalk Hey, I'm just a fan of continuity, so if someone can pull a believable excuse out of their back side, I'll take it.
I accept your explanation of memory loss due to signal degradation. :)
@@maddan9086 Well to be fair, a little thing like death did not stop Spock from reporting for duty a month later.
I remember seeing this on BBC 2 with my brother as a kid. He was a good bit older and remember me laughing when he started tearing up at it.
He never got mad like he used to I didn't get a rise out of him.
He knew it'd get me in time i suppose. Added damage now I'm missing wathcing it with him. It's his birthday today I might call him. Its been a while.
It's also weird even in the TNG era, they never brought up the McCoy was still alive. Would have been cool to have Scotty talk to a much older version of his friend
I believe DeForest Kelly had died by this time.
@@shjp2148 Deforest Kelly died in 1999, a few years after TNG ended their series run.
@donaldjones5712 He did, but his character Bones died shortly after his visit to the Enterprise-D
While no canonical source says who was alive or dead we know Mccoy and spock were alive. Possibly chekov and sulu and uhura. We know kirk was dead... Scott had ptsd (post transporter disconnection syndrome). He didn't remember that. But there was a scene troi told him Mccoy and spock were alive. It was cut.
This is now weird because in ST: Generations, Scotty knew Kirk "died on the Enterprise B", unless he never believed Kirk died and assumed his old friend would come looking for him
Something something black mountain and smiling koala.
Scotty would never truly believe kirk was gone plus 75 years in a pattern buffer he's just in shock plus also the real world answer of someone didn't remember that when they wrote it lol
@@xorcyst420Perhaps but still, canonically, Scotty was still alive at this point in time as well as Spock. Even if they couldn't get him on camera, at least have Scotty make a mention that he had a chat with the vulcan or attempted to, which could lead to the plot of Spock being on Romulus. Have him mentioned that McCoy might be dead now because we saw him REALLY hold in episode 1.
This episode pretty much proves again how poorly written the Generations movie is. If they wanted to kill Kirk officially, there was so many better ways
31 years later and "is that a CONDUIT INTERFACE?" still cracks me up
They used the same corridor in The Undiscovered Country. And pretty much the same engine room.
Scotty : lieutenant? 😅
Worf : Yes! 🤨 (p'takh scot) 🙃 🤣
00:36 Franklin's pattern digraded 53% which left the magic Star Trek number 😁
This episode was everything to me when I was 11 years old. I blew a gasket seeing old and new in the same show.
Hey, thank you for posting this and I love the music at the end, the theme song played on strings is relaxing!
I had never noticed before how many times in this scene Geordi goes about tapping and slapping Scottie on his bandaged arm 😉
Let's ignore another Dyson sphere!
Yeah the major powers should be fighting over it, the shell was made of super alloy impervious to phaser fire, they could salvage that and make ships out of it let alone all the other technology. The thing is of unimaginable scale, it has endless resources to exploit.
@@kommodore6691 And how would you salvage it when Phasers weren't even able to penetrate it?
Take a shot every time Geordie taps Scotty on his *broken* arm
At 3:55, it sounds like Scotty calls Geordi by his real name, "Mr. LeVar."
He says Laforge, not Levar.
It's just that weird Scottish accent James did that make the Laforge sound odd.
Like he holds the a much longer than he should.
Of the entire series this is my 1 favorite episode. R.I.P. Jimmie.
Always felt this deserved a 2 hour arc. A bit more development with Geodies out of character irritation and I would be loved to hA seen a bit more development between he an Worf. Ha to rem in 5 the kilingons saved Kirk a by 6 even with Kirks "let the die utterance...still nursing an open wound over a son he was just getting to know" ...the peace process was beginning as he retired. It would have made for an interesting conversation for Work to approach him an explain his bond to humans that brought him to Starfeet.
1:26 Riker: _"Captain, perhaps there are a few things we should talk about."_
With that look on his face, I totally expected Scotty to respond with a "You don't say!". 😄
Geordi: _"That's absolutely brilliant."_
Well, when it is a vital necessity and you got plenty of time to figure it out, you probably will.
We could discuss the energy principles of it, though: The ship had enough energy to keep him in the pattern buffer but not for the life support system? But then the ship is fine because they could beam on board and rescue him. Their mere absence would not totally unburden it, and most can be recycled anyway.
Geordi: _"Wait til you see the holodeck."_
Scotty: 'Lad, I have just spent 75 years on a hollow deck.'
Scotty said they didn't have enough supplies. To me that says what they were low on was food and water, not necessarily power
@@stars9084 Oh, they still had only conventional food supply back then? No synthesizing as part of the life support? (The TOS Enterprise already had protein cubes or such.)
But OK, since the ship was only meant to bring him to his retirement location, maybe it was specifically not meant for longer away phases.
@@Dowlphin It's also possible the food synthesizers were destroyed in the crash
@@stars9084 And irreparable by Scotty? 😄
@@Dowlphin Scotty is fantastic, but I'm not sure even he could repair a machine crushed under thousands of tons of starship
One thing I always wondered about this episode, if everyone died where are all the bodies?
Scotty and Franklin wouldn't have gotten in the transporter instantly. They probably saw to the bodies beforehand
1:03 Geordi's thinking "Err, he does know Kirk was killed in the Enterprise-B incident, right? I mean he was there after all."
" Well Laddie, we had a holodeck in The Animated Series "
To be fair, back then they had a very debatable issue of animated's canon (see also Dax saying Koloth never met Kirk in battle despite the second Tribbles episode). Only recently have they seemed to embrace it more with stuff like the K'Zinti being mentioned by Riker in season 1 of "Picard". That and the references Lower Decks has done, but also being animated they could more easily get away with it.
Also, I don't think on the Rec Room we saw in animated there was ever any life created besides plant life, so that is something the Holodeck improved on.
Ah, Jimmy Doohan -- he was an absolute ringer for my father, just without the Scottish accent.
Sounds like Scotty got the lemon of the fleet.
I remember how my jaw was left hanging when I first saw this episode back in the days
The main thing that bothered me about this episode is that, with the possible exception of various reliable forms of Time Travel, the discovery of an intact, functioning dyson sphere should have rated as by far the most important discovery of the Enterprise. Even the Borg aren't depicted as anywhere near a Type 2 civilization on the Kardashev scale.
In the holodeck awaits beans!
Scotty looked up at the entrance and noticed the transporter's resonator array was changed. We learn the duotronic enhancers were replaced about forty years prior with isolinerar chips. And don't touch the exposed EPS power taps that look suspiciously like isolinear optical chips. Yeah, he was reaching for one of those chips. The equipment trunk from the old Star Trek movie was reused as a transporter systems housing for TNG. The covering panels were changed to flat plates for this episode and kept until the end of the series. It doesn't really look like an improvement. I liked the rounded covers better. They do tend to "improve" things with lazy looking designs.
Can you imagine? He'd never have to buy another drink for the rest of his life if I'd found him. I'd be endlessly pouring whisky and posing questions about his storied life :D
The Holodeck…..and Riker‘s „Special Programs“ 😄
What isn't shown in the episode is Scotty looking his old friends up in the ship's computer.
1:23 Let's talk about DEI
Of course Ron D. Moore wrote this 😂
Geordi's vIsor just flat out ignores that sling. That, or he's just an ass. He slaps his wounded arm 3 times.
Starfleet once had a ship, the NCC-2023 Dyson's Spear, and it sucked like no other.
God dangit it took mee too long to figure this joke out. Good one! That's pretty clever.
La forge keeps hitting Scottie's arm , they needed him on the other side
What if they had materialized the 47% Franklin? Which half would appear?
It's too bad they killed off Franklin so soon, I would've liked to have seen a little more character development for him, first.
Just... maybe stay away from Holodeck 4. It's never been the same, since... well, never mind.
They are supposed to be self cleaning... how did you even DO that?!?

53%? I've seen lower.
Yeah Star Trek: The motion picture.
'Tis but a glitch.
All they would have had to do is EnHaNcE it. 😄
Yeah what does that even mean, wouldn't losing even 1% or any of the instructions on how to put someones atoms back together kill them?
@@kommodore6691 Not necessarily. As long as the brain was intact, and the genetic information maintained, an AI program could reconstruct a human body fairly well such that 99% of the positional data would be fine.
