I need to pump the brakes on my electric jeep conversion project (episode 20)

  • I'm in the process of rebuilding a 1956 Jeep CJ5 and converting it to an electric vehicle. Since the motor and power steering are now taking up the space where the master cylinder was, I need to hang in on the firewall. And plumb all the brakes.
    I used Anchor Lube in this video and I'm excited they're now a supporter of the channel. Check out their product here:

    I'm enjoying this project so much - most of what you do (both mechanically and in terms of fabrication) is way above my skill level, but I always learn something from your explanations and watching you work. Can't wait to see the finished product, but the journey there is just as enjoyable. Kudos, Jeremy!

    You nailed the title! 😂
    On bench bleeding the MC:
    If you just barely bump the pedal/pushrod several dozen times before you start stroking it you can actually get it to work without blocking the ports. You basically do tiny semi-strokes until you no longer see bubbles upon the next few bumps. I learned this in desperation after I had installed one dry and had to drive it to work in a couple of hours. This was after an all-nighter, of course. Figuring this out allowed me to actually get a shower in that morning. 😂

    This chap is brilliant. I watch a lot of this kind of content on RUclips being a practising anorak, he is far and away the best.
    Me and my brother bought a 1942 Ford jeep out of a scrapyard in the early seventies, it had been issued in October 1942 according to the brass plates on the dash. It was written off and seized but our father said getting it running would be a good experience. I was 12 and my brother 10, we lived on a farm and had a couple of miles of track before we got to a mainroad. The last half mile was up a steep narrow twisting hill. It was a shared track and some of the other farmers had Landrovers. Back then we would have snow in the winter which would blow across the track and block it completely. The land rovers would all get stuck but generally the jerp could get past them.
    The only time it stuck was if the snow managed to get compacted underneath and take the weight off the wheels. To make things more exiting at the bottom of the hill there was a reservoir at either side of the track....

    Unsupported brake pipes can crack from weird harmonic vibrations. I had a heavy truck that used to repeatedly break one brake pipe. It stopped after I got the drive shaft rebuilt.

  • @sierraspecialtyauto7049
    @sierraspecialtyauto7049 Месяц назад +1

    You're using the best current material for the brake lines, but I'll note that while the lines on the truck when you got it may have been copper, the original lines were galvanized steel. There were a VERY few vehicles in the late '20s that had copper between the reservoir and the master, but in over 20 years of restoring brake parts for old cars I never saw OE copper brake lines.

    • @JeremyMakesThings

      Sure you've left space enough.
      In refrigeration a service coil leaves you extra to change out a compressor and resolder the line
      In automotive the manufacturers say it's so there's never any stress on the MC fitting where the line might flex thousands of times at the nut, causing a tear or work hardening.
      Not meant as any kind of criticism, just a question and observation.
      I'm really enjoying your project and the thought process that goes into it! 👍.

    • @JeremyMakesThings
      @JeremyMakesThings  Месяц назад +1

      @@jimurrata6785 no, you’re right, and it’s something I thought about. The front line goes from the MC to a p-clip on the firewall, then a large bend to a p-clip on the frame. The back line goes from the MC to the proportioning valve (also mounted to the body), then a series of bends before it ends up on the frame rail. Of course, there’s still a small amount of flex between the MC and the rest if the body…so there’s always some guesswork involved, and I made pretty good guesses, but second opinions are always welcome.

      Copper/nickel is really easy to form double flares and the like.
      The whole reason it's DOT approved is because it isn't supposed to work harden and fracture like steel or copper, so I wouldn't be too concerned, really.. 🙄
