  • Scum is by FAR my favorite game of all time and I truly believe it can become the BEST SURVIVAL game EVER BUT we need to focus on what is important and in a SURVIVAL game PVE elements are EVERYTHING and AI is right at the top so this needs to be FIXED ASAP.

    Adding the ability for puppets to open doors and jump through windows would have been enough. Instead, they give us that and a broken horde system. Before, you could use strategies to avoid or confuse puppets, but now with they just act strange.

      Yes. You always know what you did wrong when you died but now a lot of deaths are the systems fault like a suicide puppet coming out of a wall next to you

      2:20 it happened to me twice this week (barely 40h gameplay) spawning on top of me. Statistically its rare yes but its not excuseable😾

      Your concers are 100% justified. It looks like we will get to a point like in dayz where they will remove the zombies completely because they cant figure out how to fix it

      I was in a bunker and horde after horde came. I killed hundreds. They teleported from areas above and below me into the level I was at. Additionally they would spawn very close in non-horde fashion, just spawning randomly very close in places I had cleared. How can I be immersed when they can appear out of thin air? How?

    Emersion breaking is the perfect way to say it. And that's exactly how I feel. I know it's strange to say "it's not realistic" in a zombie survival game. But it just completely takes you out of the experience.

      Beta, early access, in development, intentionally reducing animations from puppets and making them cookie cutter to allow software to do its job easier. Everyone complaining sounds stupid and needs to just quit playing the fucking game until full release

    I am with you on this brother - the encounter system is an untested & broken mess. PVE like it or not, is the core of this game, and for the devs to change the core of the game at this late hour in the development cycle is just mind boggling to me . Can we please have the old system back - it was not perfect but it worked.

      Unfortunately the Chinese Bot Shop Servers make it seem like the game isn't suffering but it is.

    Where I work, any time we have new equipment or a new process, we TEST TO FAILURE. That is the only way you know how far you can push something before it breaks. We've been doing that for 25+ years so it's not a new idea. Devs need to Test To Failure!

      Yes and then release it with a few tweaks needed but not where the players have to experience it at the start.

      I see no benefit in scaring away half the players to a game that became worse and worse every mayor update. This time did it for good. People went away and play other games. Most tell that they are better than SCUM. They won't come back.

      @@Luthais they shoulda had beta servers which are dedicated to testing, and other servers kept at prior versions, problem would be most will not test, and stay on prior, so they force it on us. Cant say too much as we know its EA, but as stated, they are pushing people away. They need to be way more open and admit (if it is the case)
      Guys, we are running this encounter zone system at an increased ratio to make sure you all experience it and can give us feed back, the final version will not have such a small spawn radius or respawn timer.., etc.
      IF this is the final version of one they decided was good, and not for testing purposes, then they need to listen to community more. I have trouble believing any of them think its good, as no single person likes it. But again, if they simply explain why its needed and a roadmap of how it will pan out.. Like maybe another tommyslav interview is needed.

    I fully agree that there is a lot of things that need to be sorted in game, especially the puppets. Either roll it back to what it was before the horde with old spawns, but introduce a new puppet that is not able to attack player and only calls the horde into the area.

    Right on point. I liked the idea of hordes and how that would be an added challenge. They just have not only missed on creating a working horde system but they broke other things that were working in the game. It's misstep after misstep with these developers. I came back briefly after having left when the vehicles left and gave this a try with the new horde system and having the working vehicles back. It didn't take but a few hours and I uninstalled it again.

    I agree to. I stopped playing short after 0.95 came out, simply because the puppet spawning system now. I did like to get in a town and clear it all out and then go looting, now I can't do it anymore cause they keep spawning in.

    I've played scum fairly much, but theres still plenty or areas of the map that I am not familiar with and I frequently make "discoveries" and as I drive around the map. I used to stop at so many things and check for loot or to simply enjoy an unfamiliar area that I stumbled upon on my route from A to B,æ. There's rarely if ever anything of material gain in form of weapons and such in these places Im talking of, but discovery and curiousity is absolutely a gain on its own, even if it's just in the type of "huh, never knew there was a lumber cabin this far south". Now just drive a straight focused line from A to B, if I hit the brakes anywhere in between , those gangly fellas come out of the bushes from all directions, hands forward as if they were halfway through the macarena when rigor mortis kicked in. They're rarely all that life threatening if you are at "entry" level armed, but it's so tedius and it's just another way to halt player progress, another hoop to jump through. With no added benefit or really any sense of accomplishment for beaving this "Challenge" thrust upon us, apart from the permission to keep doing what you were doing untill the game pulls out those hoops again a fixed period of time later, busywork of the worst possible kind, pure and simple

    I have to thank you.
    I'm a PVE player and right now, scum is unplayable with this new spawning system.
    You are an important voice, a voice that brings together the voices of all the other players.
    We complain on scum official channels, but RUclipsrs like you are a force that cannot be ignored.
    there is no way for developers to ignore it.
    I'm absolutely sure that the developers are watching scum RUclipsrs.

    Scum was one of my favorite games until 0.95 and the encounter system completely broke the game for me and most everyone on the community server i played on. I pretty much left the game and the community server we had shut down because of this broken system. The devs had given pretty much zero communication about how they will or will not fix this, and this is very disappointing. Yes we pay to play and it’s early access but we are effectively alpha testing the game, yet they don’t care or communicate with the player base when we give critical feedback.

    Spawning inside of the ground and spawning from bushes both can be ok but I've seen it on official settings and more hardcore settings where I get to, let's say a gas station, and no puppets there but then I see them doing the weird walk to the gas station from nearby trees and bushes. Sometimes they will do the weird walk right past me as if they don't see me there. Another problem more noticeable in bunkers is when you clear some rooms then pass by those rooms 2 minutes later and there's more puppets spawning. When I kill a puppet silently, it seems to be a 50/50 chance still that it will magically call a horde although it died without making any screams.
    Usually in zombie games hordes get called from 1 or more zombies making noise to call the horde. These problems haven't caused me to die but they can be annoying at times especially when I am leveling up stealth some and then get puppets running directly to me without line of sight and without noises being made. I enjoy the game and these problems are not game breaking for me personally but with a few adjustments, the devs could have a much more enjoyable games especially for new players. I just want the puppet spawning to be more realistic.
    The puppets are supposed to be reanimated corpses being controlled so technically they're zombies and could spawn from the ground but the current system is just so erratic that it could become game breaking for some. Sometimes I'll go somewhere where there used to be 4 or 5 puppets wandering around but now those 4 or 5 puppets will spawn after the player enters the area and often all 4 or 5 will charge directly at the player regardless of whether or not the playing is being quiet or not. Pretty minor things to fix but maybe they'll fix it because if they add armed NPCs and other threats using the same spawn system then it could become a bit of chaos that is quite negative instead of fun chaos.

      @@Luthais Unfortunately I believe the devs only test those things on default settings when they really should test these things with the multiplier at 10x instead of 1x.

    100% agree with you - old system was way more of a "survival" type feeling, I recently began to get bored with the game, and it didn't happen back then, you could just go around in the middle of nowhere and still feel you were in a survival game, now it feels empty, and when you approach a POI it suddenly feels too much :)

    i agree and i quit playing as well, as a solo that likes the official settings meaning i like the danger and thrill of pvp... the puppets used to be a guard system and alert system for me against squads and i was able to stay hidden untill i wanted to make some noise but now its just truly a different game. and for that back too dayz i went

    The issue is that their netcode for synchronizing puppets between players is broken. With the old system the server performance went to the basement while keeping normal behaving puppets sync between players and letting them do their stuff. That's why we now have only puppets spawning within 50 meters around you like this and they are reluctant to fix or optimize their netcode as it would cause probably more work.
    This game unfortunately has steered into a deep dead end and it almost arrived it's destination. PvE is unplayable. Scopes in PvE are useless as you would never see a puppet more than 50m away from you anymore. Immersion in PvP is broken as well and I don't see them accepting any critism from the vast amount of people complaining about this in the forums right now.
    Thank you for testing this on high multipliers on a private server with a friend and your own money used. This shows how severe the issue is. Wish devs would have done this before releasing this garbage...

    I think puppets should be seen from a distance as you go through the game whether it be a town or poi or even in the open. No spawning in or ailen walk to your location. Both inside and outside buildings and such.

      That's the weirdest part of the new system. It feels like they want you to be more stealthy which is hard when you can't preclear some of the puppets at range and also have it so they automatically start homing in on you even when not spotted or making alot of noise. It's a very mixed message feel to the update, be more stealthy but we're going to also make do everything to make that near impossible.

    I wont touch a survival game that spawns zombies in a room you just previously walked through and cleared. Very very sad because Scum was my favorite game for YEARS until the day .95 patch was released.

    Totally agree. I came back to Scum last week after a year super excited. After the first hours i was searching bug forums for answers to strange puppet behavior.. then realized they designed it that way.. hoping they fix.

    dont forget the silent beepers and silent animals and silent hoards and hoards happening after the zombie dies, and respawning falling straight down.. not to mention the 8 fatal errors ive gotten the last 2 days and sooo much more.. the beepers in the bunkers are a HUGE PROBLEM!!!!

    Great video. I did not realize that the horde system was supposed to be somewhat matched with the new NPCs. That would not be good. I understand that the devs are trying to increase performance to fit in NPCs, but this system doesn't appear to be working. Sad. I'll keep playing to see what they come up with because I do love some of the many other things they have implemented.

    Absolutely agreed. They need the 'random encounters' to control the NPCs, but I think they were hoping they could use the same system for puppets too. It doesn't work as it stands and they need to take something else out if it is all related to server performance.

    I play solo, mainly PVE but on a PVP server, I like the tension.
    Upon entering large puppet areas, 90% of the time, your forced tactic is to run away because it all gets out of control. I don't believe that is intended gameplay. It's definitely not the gameplay I want.
    Why have a game where ammo is normally scarce and then have hordes running you down all the time. It doesn't make sense.
    Vaulting through windows is immersion breaking for me. Maybe falling through eventually might be ok but the normal movement of a puppet is not coordinated enough to vault. I'm also ok with banging on doors till they break but it would be nice if most of the time they just banged and gave up after 10 seconds or something. A little bit of tension in the time before it gives up, that would be cool.
    I've never really bothered with the modular vehicle system. The only vehicles I use right now are motorcycles and sometimes boats. As a solo player, it's the easiest option.
    The modular building system is a pain in the arse most of the time. Look at something like Valhiem if you want it done right, or even Rust is better.
    Things need to change.

    Well I stopped playing Scum for one reason - every single system in this game is buggy to the point of being game breaking and those problems seems to be ignored for very very long time by devs. Let's add more stuff, break old stuff and don't fix anything on the way... Just stop, stop for a second and start fixing.

    I must admit, I totally agree with everything said. Okay I don't have the same puppet count as you demonstrated (thank god), but it's still screwy even on default.
    As for emersion? Yep I feel it's been destroyed so much so I rarely play on my own server now. All I do is monitor for problems. And there are SO many things going wrong.
    They have, over time, taken away so much that brought me to this game. If I was looking at it now, with fresh eyes, I don't think I would buy it or play it as a new player.

    Thanks Luthais for posting this video on what is the most immersion breaking part of the game.I personally know and I know that many others also know of many Scum players that have moved onto playing other games now because of the 0.95 update, and the issues surrounding It.Hopefully the Developers will take a serious look at this and actually fix said issues before they release anything new.We don't need new broken stuff just fix what they have first.this great game has become the laughing stock of gaming in the gaming community.Very sad.I am also worried about what this means for the future success of the game.We all want It to succeed and be what the Great Game Scum can be.Listen to us Developers and fix this.

    My biggest problem with the 0.95 "TYhe Horde" update is that, exactly as you said Luthias. NOBODY asked for it.. or maybe a very few of the community but the puppets was not a problem. Now it is.. i really hope they can fix it. But this actually worries me for the armed NPC's... in my oppinion, they've to get the NPC's right from the start. For those puppets or zombies are a bit over...

    Great video! I can not agree more with how broken the spawning system has become. They should have kept the old spawning system and introduced the Horde as a separate setting that could be turned on and off without affecting the existing spawning system we had. That way they could fix/tweak the horde system while we continued to enjoy the game with the original spawn settings. It was definitely not ready for release, and the "alien" movement is completely awful.

      That would have been a great idea. Get a bunch of us to test it on a test server and only release it too the public when its done and the option would be great but not sure how easy that will be.

    100% agree with video.
    @Luthais Side request... Are you able to change trader prices? Seems there is little incentive to killing puppets aside from Fame Points, and staying alive of course.
    What if the price paid for puppet eyes was 50 or 100? And necklaces something like 50, 100, and 150. Would be like a bounty system for clearing puppets. I'd look at a horde with different eyes.

    Distance can be set to 100 so puppets do not spawn ontop of player. Horde multiplyer can be reduced to 0.1 so effectivley no horde spawns. Check each multiplyer option as they are not all 1.0 - 10.

      If they spawn at 100 they pose no threat. We dont want to remove the threat. We want to fix it.

    every patch i come back to this game to check out if it has gotten better and stop playing it after a very short while, because again they broke more things than bugs were fixed. and i already posted this in your discord luthais. as a dev told me on steam, they will not fix the puppets glitching through walls and floors while not aggroed. i really really hope that they will think again and realize that it URGENTLY needs fixing. otherwise i probably won't touch this game again. cheers

    I absolutely agree. I barely can motivate myself to play SCUM atm. 0.95 broke the immersion for me. This feeling of immersion in pre 0.95 was the heart of this game for me. If this is made only for performance in the future, I can live with only 20 or 30 players per server but with an max immersive PVE part of the game. I don't need 100+ players on a server ( It would be anyway to crowded ) if the price is a system like this. Please Gamepires, don't destroy this great game by yourself. If you need more time, please take it. I can wait another year or more for the release, if we get a great SCUM as it should be. I don't know if it's to complicated but if we can switch this system in the gamesettings on and off could be a solution for the server owners. Anyway, I hope this is only a step in the process for a final system which is great.

    Still puppet spawns are breaking immersion and on pve servers scopes are useless because of 50m radius despawns and 20m radius spawns.

      Everything was default except Encounter Base Character Amount Multiplier. That ranged from 1 to 10 on the videos

    if they were more transparent about upcoming plans of the new armed NPCs and why this new encounter system is needed, it may help us understand.
    We have heard for a long time that not specifically the engine, but the netcode model has a limitation of persistent rigged skeletons on the map at one time. 64 players, 64 pups/animals. The birds were a fast spawn in and despawn as they flew off, but there was issues with planes so they removed them.
    Pups were locally spawned to cells players were in and likely timed, Still radius based in a way, but not the tiny radius they have created now. Me, I had no problem sometimes going to towns and it being empty. it gave an eerie vibe. I did not like the next version along where they had a sleeping one in basically every building, that was too predictable.
    Devs want the threat to be constant but its like, if this was cooking, the lid came off the salt and they just went full tilt overboard. Kill a pup and another in there again.. they dialed it back a bit, but need to dial it back still much more. My only hope is, they are purely TESTING this encounter zone system and that's why its jacked up to 11. Coz they keep saying this is the system new armed npcs will use, but clearly, we can't have armed npcs spawning on us 24/7. So common sense says it will be dialed back a lot for them and hopefully dialed back on pups for the sake of immersion.
    They are saying less and less though and idk if that's them or Jagex.

    ya I saw few do the alien walk and Frankenstein walking to nowhere and inside objects (stuck) It doesn't help either and looks like obvious bugged stuff.

    Chom, as a server owner and a player myself i can say that this whole horde spawning system is scuffed as shit. the enjoyment from 0.75 going to 0.95 is a mess...
    people are going to troll and say its EA - I personally miss the good old days when you had to take a Pee to Bring those Sodium levels down. - My point being they had direction, felt like they had pride in said patch and a lot of you were there in Official DC on Patch Day, The Hype was Insane. Now We get Paid Dlc While The Functionality of the wrist watch still isn't working as intended and We lost our tatts as well.

    One thing i don't understand is why the devs don't turn everything up in a testing environment and just watch for 5 minutes. Even on base settings Beepers spawning 3 feet infront of you and hoarders running into your house makes them not cash money.

    I reckon revert the puppets back to 0.75 but allow he puppets to still enter building and call hordes and make suppressors work like they did in 0.5 not attracting puppets at all except for where the projectile landed. If this current system is added to the new npcs I can see a lot more old players leaving and heading back to dayz and other survival games.

    zombie spawning is fukt on our private server. zombies jump through floors and walls and even spawn directly behind you... its no longer fun.

    I love this game and i hate it sometimes. I started to play back in 2019 and we had a lot of good updates and bad updates (my favourite bad update was the tetris-minigame for your inventory), but all in all it was a good progress.
    I only play PvE, so a lot of problems in the PvP-part of the game don't bother me that much and I have not that much experience in it. I played for nearly 10.000 hours and have my own server for most of the time. I don't get why the devs put in so many good systems but it feels like they never finish them proberly. The modular vehicles are great but why are there no differnt parts to put on them? We only have armor and thats it and the rager doesn't has armor at all. And where are all the other vehicles? Why can't we craft saddlebags for the dirtbike? The improved metabolism is great as well... but there are so many things you could do with this system. Right now you can drink from every water source without a problem for example. You get hyper- or hypothermia but why can't you get sick or get a cold after that... Why can't the devs finish and polish existing systems in the game before putting out new stuff that doesn't work?
    And now to the hord-system. I realy like the idea that you trigger a hord when you aren't carefull enough. But right now it doesn't make sense and isn't fun at all. Why not keep the puppets the way they were before? As you said, nobody was complaining about that. Yes, the puppets could sleepwalk through closed doors etc, but the system in gerneral was all right. Making them open doors or jump through windows would be great addition. And maybe you could have a "screamer" who calls his friends in the surroundings. But why change the spawning system? There are no sleeping puppets in the houses anymore you can't realy scout the area anymore because those stupid puppets spawn around you no matter what you do and how carefull you are. This would be okay, but only when you trigger a horde but not for the normal spawns.... Damn... i wrote way to much...

    Well said Luth,in abandoned bunkers razors spawns repeatedly no matter if you are stealthy or not,they spawn even if you stay still,the sound is broken,i got a razor grabing me while i was hacking the second door,beepers laughing and exploding in abandoned bunkers when the concept is to be silent and stealthy for the babys.0.95 is a turd that broke the game and is 3 months since its release,makes me think devs don't play their game.

    Horde idea is great. Also puppets can open doors and come throught windows. @Devs: Nice try guys. But the way you choose for this seems to be completly wrong (as you see). So drop it away and start over please. Even if 1.0 is not ready till end of this year. I'm very scared of the last development news -> no word about fixing/rework this stuff. Which game are you playing/testing?

    Great video with great examples of a broken system. Most players play this game for the immersion. This system is very broken. Hoards spawn with no sound one time and the next time you will hear hoard sound and no puppets come. As a dev I would be embarrassed to say I fixed it by adding bushes all over the map.

    Ive only played on single player so far personally while learning and noticed the weird spawning and puppets halfway in ground. It is immersion breaking. Wouldn't want to die because of something silly like puppets spawning when you think the area is clear.

    As a newer player who mostly plays single player atm, it forces me to play badly. No such thing as tactically entering a POI anymore because zoms won’t spawn in for a minute or so. And I won’t drive my car up to a gas pump again after getting blown up by a suicide that spawned on top of me. Just park away from the pump and run with a can.

    Yes, the mechanic of spawning puppets at a certain distance from the player is bad. Here is one example:
    Noticed a group of poppets spawned near the air drop, and when I moved back 1 meter,
    it disappeared before my eyes, then 1 meter forward and reappeared out of nowhere, endless loop, it was about 100m
    it's crazy how broken the system of spawning poppets in scum is now.
    All ranged weapons(sniper rifles, assault rifle + scope ...) are useless(in pve) can't even get bonus for poppet head kill in more that 100 meters. Please fix

    We dont need new guns and cloths . We need stable AI sistem wich works like it should be . I didnt like sleeping puppets in the house but this is even worse. This state of game is very bad for newcomers to the game. I hope they will put focus on the main thing that is fixing puppet sistem first . Thanks for sharing this video for all of us ✌️

    You stated. i Affirm. As a gamne developer i can't understand what has been going on. i did enjoy the game 2 years ago. now its, just a whole lot of scum. badly sticked together with bad glue. and its starting to fall apart. They not only need to rework the puppets, it needs a full rework the overall inventory system / looting UX, and the crafting system. Theese 3 things and the game would be better. But still .. What about the actual game? What is the actual PVE game Objective? I was never interested in the PVP aspect of this Early access i bought on 2018 . I played the game yesterday and today to check on the updates after 2-3 years not touching it. and it felt extremely unbalanced, and bad. Not touching it Until its a playable piece of Scum.

    I hate to say it but it's the truth. So I feel it needs to be said. I've legitimately stopped playing after this update. It's irritating clearing a police station and collecting arrows methodically, only to have them respawn while I'm opening the lockers. Then on top of all that instead of fixing that they gave us hordes and floating puppets that sometimes can't be hit while floating. Game breaking. So I stopped logging in more and more after every hotfix and patch failed to fix it. We got paintcolors and patterns though!

    my main problem is they change to much with out public testing. example is breners Armory, they locked alot of the bunkers down and removed lockers. and added buggy puppets all of witch makes abandoned bunkers not worth hiting.
    all good changes but to much in one go

    The current sistem is broken. I have played since the initial launch, and currently the puppet system is just taking away from the game. Not only there are to many puppets making it impossible to solo loot some parts of the maps but also the respawn rate and respawn timers are all working to make the player fail. Yesterday I went to loot a base trying to be as quiet as possible , looting low and slow. It turned out that once the first puppet spawned a hoard spawned. You have to options, either run or die. So in practical terms they killed solo loot. There should be puppet multipliers ... and they are currently absent. There should be time counters for puppet spawn......absent. In an official server in a town I managed to pile up more than 70 puppets just by standing on top of a garage and shooting killing them as they hoarded bellow... I mean ...its stupid. Sound is important in this game.....FOV is important....why did the Dev's pull away from it. There should be triggers to puppets not just random zoombie walk recurrent spawning.

    The old puppet system was so easy to deal with i thought thats why they had put the horde in bc it was to the point that puppets were meaningless eith no challenge. I hope they fix it... I love this game but a great deal of it im getting upset bc dammit i almost died over a glitch or bug or a puppet inside a wall that i cant see but clearly hear close to me lol no other game like scum i hope they realise that for it to be unique it has to be polished. And if its isnt working out maybe... Hire some other people... Hire a modder... I think red cd project did lol since the newest update had animations and things that were previously from mods and acted like it was their idea lol anyway. Modders are for the most part passionate they will do it and they will do it right

    the horde system is honestly atrocious I read the patch notes for it and it made me want to play again then experiencing it me and my server changed as much of it as we could to change it back. it's incredibly broken.

    First let me say that I am a single player only. My favorite parts are survival and building things

    This game is my jam I really love lots about it......BUT.......I uninstalled the game after 1711.1 hours in game.
    I keep hoping for it to get better but they keep making it worse.
    Not saying I wont come back (most likely after they let us mod it) just saying it's a disaster right now.

    Haven't played in a couple of months and holy shit, that puppet slide is awful. It's time devs admit it's not working and either rethink the spawn system or go back. Damn, this makes me sad. Rethinking recommending Scum to new players right now. As a side, I've never had problems on servers, servers seemed worse to me after the first puppet change tbh.

    the spawn settings now are crap, so i blocked the hordes, and prevent to door /window breaching, no mechs and no beepers on my server, and now this game is boring....bring back the old system, inside , outside and in the wild, beepers on their location, not random spawns...much more fun...

    I got the game back when it was first released on early access back in 2018. I recently downloaded the game again after seeing one of your videos and I am disappointed in the current state. The game has not changed much other than some new POIs. If this game is close to release this is a huge let down.

    on every single day with this unbelievably bad puppet behavior, SCUM loses its gaming value and in the long run, its loyal community then...
    Give the players the possibility to play with older updates and you will see that almost nobody will play on the current build. but rather with version 0.7!
