My favorite song of the entire show. S4 was the first I actively watched as a fan, I joined mid s3, and then this epic song came along in the finale. So. Damn. Beautiful.

There are many songs of MLP Equestria Girls who deserves an acoustic cover, because Mr. Ingram did a more than outstanding job with EQG songs. Most of the Rainbow Rocks songs are awesome. If I had to choose an EQG song it would have been Friendship through the Ages next to Shine like Rainbows.

You know, I don't know much about MLP. But this is an astonishingly mature song. There are plenty of points in life where the world just opens beneath you, and you just don't know what is coming next. You feel like you're treading water. When your young, ever aspect of your life is structured. Its laid out before you. Go to school. Go to high school. Go to college. Go to university. Get a job. The first 25 years of my life were like a marble in a slot machine. You knew where you were going, and although there were obstacles, you knew what those would be and how to face them - even if we did so with varying success.
Then, the trap door opens, and your just treading water. Who knows what comes next, or what you're supposed to do? Peruse a career? A relationship? Even dealing with ordinary things like rent, banking, taxation, utilities. Just... stuff... that suddenly becomes a new obstacle in the way. You're stuck, and there is no one to tell where to go next, or what the future holds. You're trusting you made the right choices, because if you cocked it up along the way, you could be caught in a job that doesn't fulfil you. And reality hits you like a sledge hammer. You're forced to choose between what you want, and what is expedient. Friendships that lasted decades fade over months.
Its a frightening and terrible thing. And failure, failure is something we are so unprepared for. We're trained to believe that if you put in the work, that if you believe in yourself and your ambition hard enough, then that enough. The system will give you what you deserve.
But you don't know. Not really. Luck doesn't smile upon you and you're forced to choose.
The Song for me, is a really mature moment for Twilight. Someone who is goal oriented, practised, and reliant on the wisdom of others, and on traditional learning, is suddenly grappling with the fact that she doesn't know what the future holds. She's an academically minded person, who suddenly has to make her own choices.
It feels very familiar to me.
Anyone whose ever been in that position knows that feeling. To be gifted, and blessed, to have all those advantages, and then suddenly be faced with the fact that the future is unknowable and unknown. That you can play everything right, make all the right choices, and still be unprepared for what comes next. To have the nebulous expectations of others upon you, and have absolutely no idea how to live up to them.
For someone like Twilight, the possibility of suddenly being adrift, without a plan, without a goal, without knowing what to work towards and where to direct her focus next, is a frightening prospect. Its a mature theme, and one that I've come to appreciate more as I have gotten older. So much of what I was always assured will just... happen... as I aged just hasn't materialised. And like me, she's just waiting, for the next problem to be solved. Because thats all she knows how to do.
Responding a couple years later, but THIS. This is such a perfect analysis of this song and how it relates to real life. I’m sort of in this position right now, and it’s pretty daunting. I had a random thought to come back and listen to this song- maybe that’s why.

It's interesting how a song can sound so different with different people singing it. I have to say while all of these ladies have lovely singing voices I much prefer the more steady tones from our normal VAs.
