    the idea of Jim Cummings returning to voicee an old character he played in the original Darkwing Duck is actually a misdirection, because it's not DARKWING he's returning to play
    It's the VILLAIN he played in that show, NEGADUCK, who he returned to portray, and the fact they try and hide that fact until the ending is the big twist AND the misdirect.

      Yes, I loved that part. Letting the audience know that the new Darkwing still has an ego, just not the insane ego Jim Starling has. Drake has all the heroic traits Darkwing needs with a touch of the ego he needs as well. Jim Starling is just a total egomaniac, the worst traits of Darkwing with none of the heroic traits.
      This was the best possible way to introduce a reboot of Darkwing. They do a tease with the old show featuring Jim Cummings, now a great back story for the hero and main villain. On top of that they gave a back door way to bring in the classic villains even though they were also on the show within the show.
      Negaduck is a crazed former Darkwing actor. He hates Drake Mallard for stealing his "part". Using his knowledge of his old show, he goes out of his way to create villains based on the characters from the show. So we can have Negaduck behind the scenes orchestrating the creation of various villains, teaching them all of Darkwings moves. Drake spends season 1 fighting his new rogues gallery, unaware of who the mastermind is. Then at the end of season 1, Negaduck and Darkwing face off, Darkwing coming face to face once again with the childhood hero that inspired him who he thought died a hero. OMG, I want to see this happen so badly!

      I got to admit, I felt the same way. I thought they were ruining the character. I thought it would be impossible for them to reconcile the old TV show version of Darkwing with a real version in the same universe. Not only did they give us an amazing new back story to this version of Darkwing, they also did an amazing commentary on reboots in general.
      Darkwing is not just Jim Cummings. Yes, he was the original, but as long as the spirit and humor is there we can make way for a new actor to take on the role. A new version with a new backstory. And better yet, they gave us a way better back story for Negaduck this go around. If they actually do a full on series I will be on the edge of my seat as the story unfolds. Drake Mallard fighting against his childhood hero, who is possibly pulling strings from the shadows only to be revealed at the end of season 1.

    My theory is Launchpad is going to be offered a job by Drake Mallard by the season finale. Which means Della takes his place as the Duck family pilot. And, this will lead to a Darkwing Duck reboot that takes place in the same universe as DuckTales. For those thinking, "Shouldn't there have been leaks for this little bit of information?", they've been keeping a secret that Della would be returning home earlier than the season finale. Edit: Wow! Thanks for giving my DuckTales theory over 1,000 likes!

    • @jennifergriel861
      @jennifergriel861 5 лет назад +59

      I don’t think it will separate out into a spin-off. Even if it does we probably won’t loose Launchpad. This new Darkwing lives in Duckberg. Like the rest of the cast. So even if Launchpad starts assisting him, he would still be in the same city and able to interact with the old cast. My bet is that DW will just be a side-character on Ducktales. Nothing more.

    • @joshuaking3731
      @joshuaking3731 5 лет назад +35

      I love that idea, and it would fit. With Della being so angry that Scrouge got a new pilot. But the creators have also been hinting at another way they can make it work. Lauchpad has been going off on dangerous adventures with old flings in several episodes. He could just go off and help out Drake Mallard when he doesn't have screen time. And then they casually hint that's what he's doing in a throwaway line.

    • @InoMercy
      @InoMercy 5 лет назад +16

      It's possible they'll pull a Loud House and have the Darkwing Duck spinoff just be part of the show. Every few episodes it'll switch to St. Cunard and have Drake and Launchpad do shit.

    • @electrobob992
      @electrobob992 5 лет назад +17

      Umm, they already released the episode involving della's return and Donald's "trip".
      But I believe they won't make a separate spinoff series for Darkwing, but keep it as an in universe B plot following Darkwing and Launchpad.
      Since this show is called Ducktales this show could easily just follow different ducks for episodes.
      Also fun fact, Jim Cummings really loved playing negaduck more than Darkwing so in the reboot this is a dream come true for him.
      Oh and with Negaduck showing up, he might try to create other villains from his old show in duckberg.
      I bet that, Louie will win that bet made by Scrooge and Glomgold *Duke Baloney* since the bet was specifically: "The business to make the most money, wins the losers company" and Louie would have known about it.
      Scrooge would be distraught but unlike Glomgold... He'd be able to make it back.
      Glomgold on the other hand would snap after losing his company, possibly resulting in him gaining a new mental state. That of one similar to.... Quackerjack.
      While one of the beagle boys, I would say Big Time due to his want to impress or be better than his mother. Would become a new Liquidator.
      If so that would make 3 of the Fearsome Five. Last being a Megavolt and a Bushroot. Those two, I have no idea who would take those places unless they decided to change things up a bit. Like have the Black Heron return but somehow mutated into a plant like Bushroot if she survived that fall, or having Mark Beaks turn into a new Megavolt equivalent.

    How good was this episode? Where do I begin?!
    First off, the buildup throughout both seasons really gave this episode a powerful impact. As you said, it's a great way to introduce new audiences to Darkwing without making him feel shoehorned for fan service, while still making him feel like he can exist within the new Ducktales universe. Plus, having Launchpad fill in as an audience surrogate for older Disney Afternoon fans certainly helps.
    Second, its social commentary. It does a great job exploring the struggles of making reboots, such as why the new creator/director needs to understand the source material and why people enjoyed it in the first place. The same goes for fans, at least certain fans, needing to learn to accept changes in reboots and understand how the actors/producers feel while working on these projects.
    Third, the casting choices of the two Darkwings. To add to my previous point, since this episode was partially made with older Disney Afternoon fans in mind, having Jim Cummings play the older Darkwing actor nails the episode's commentary on reactions to changes in a reboot. It not only provides the nostalgia with Jim's classic voice, but also illustrates how people can't think of anyone else playing their favorite character besides the original actor. Having somebody else play Jim Starling in this case wouldn't have made the commentary nearly as strong as having Jim return. Speaking of actors, I also really liked Chris Diamantopoulos as the new Darkwing. He did a great job at not only giving a similar vibe to Jim's original voice, but also doing his own thing with a beloved character. I especially loved his performance during the trailer scene and the climax/ending. Heck, with the way those scenes played out, I wouldn't be surprised if Jim saw himself in the new Drake's position. I mean we are talking about a voice actor that had to take over roles previously done by other voice actors he admired (i.e. Winnie the Pooh for Sterling Holloway and Tigger for Paul Winchell).
    Finally, the big twists. No matter how many times I see them, I still get excited when they happen (Just like Launchpad at the beginning of this episode). Once the new Darkwing revealed his name to be Drake Mallard, I was thinking to myself 'Well played, Ducktales crew!' I also loved the final shots that lead to Negaduck's reveal. Seeing the purple dye liquid flowing into the sewer and off of Jim Starling's Darkwing costume was chilling enough. But when he turned around to reveal his new colors, I was completely ecstatic! Whatever Frank and co. have got in store for the new Darkwing and Negaduck, I absolutely cannot wait to see it.
    Also, seeing reboot-Megavolt look like Bane from "The Dark Knight Rises" was hilarious.

    2 things:
    1. I disagree with the assertion that when these studios reboot a property that means that they are usually big fans of said property. All too often we have seen where a lot of them do this usually to cash in on the earlier success or are doing it as a kneejerk reaction because something similar is popular at the moment.
    2. I'm surprised that you didn't mention how Jim Starling being caught in the blast of the Negabolt movie prop was a reference to the old episode where Negabolt used a canon on Darkwing that caused him to split into 2 personalities: the good one and the evil one.
    Even still, you did an awesome job on this vid and it shows that you really did your homework researching it. You've just earned yourself a new subscriber. Keep up the great work!!

    • @xaayer
      @xaayer 5 лет назад +22

      Yeah your first point is definitely a big red flag against this video. Sure fans of the series may be involved with the project, but that isn't why the project is taken on. The project is taken on because a lot of people are fans and it will/should generate money. If it is good, that's a plus, but what really matters is just that it makes money. To quote Mark Hamill, "It doesn't have to be good; it just has to make money,"
      he ignores the fact that the movie being made in the show really wasn't good. At all. The new fans (dewey) didn't like it and the old fans (Launchpad) didn't like it either. You can't ignore that. Sure the actor may be a fan and may feel blessed that they are in the movie and maybe it will inspire some people, but it wont be as good as the original and will quickly fall by the wayside. We see this pop up in the new Star Wars movie (also made by Disney. Perhaps this episode was tangentially touching on the fan backlash of that franchise?).
      John Boyega, who plays Finn, is a massive SW fan as is his mother. However, that doesn't matter when people watch the movies. Episode 7 was decent but a rehash that a lot of people quickly forgot and Episode 8, whether you think it's great or not, severely splintered the fanbase. It doesn't matter if fans are actors on the project. If a movie is bad, it is bad.
      Look at the DCEU movies. Those too have been panned by fans of older media in DC complaining that it isn't portraying the characters correctly. And they were right. Batman was killing people, Superman never smiled, Flash was... whatever Ezra Miller was, and Cyborg was too forgetful. This episode, and thus this review, doesn't actually touch on the quality of the reboot past probably the first 3rd. It first points out the reboot isn't good by any standard, but when Launchpad meets the actor, it quickly switches to putting Launchpad in the wrong and somehow because the actor is a fan of the original, it makes a soulless reboot okay because the actor also wants to inspire children. That's an admirable goal, yes, but Launchpad is still correct: it is not a good portrayal of the character.
      This is a wonderful episode and I can tell that from the review. Though I did see the Negaduck twist coming once the fight started and there are some issues with actor-becomes-superhero since... well, everyone would know his identity and he'd be breaking the law taking it into his hands, so he'd be arrested. But logic aside, good episode; I just feel like the 'moral' doesn't actually apply to Hollywood reboots in its current state and I can't help but feel that they are using it in an attempt to defend the parent company, Disney, from criticism (Seeing as they are the reboot kings at the moment)

    • @tomaO2
      @tomaO2 5 лет назад +15

      I also agree. Most remakes are cash grabs, or add things that they think audiences want to see, such as making the story really dark or, more recently, making it more "diverse".

    • @Dargonhuman
      @Dargonhuman 5 лет назад +7

      Yea, I was questioning that part of the review too, thinking back to the Ghostbusters 2016 debacle and the backlash against the Star Trek and Star Wars reboots (I'm counting Discovery and the new SW trilogy as reboots for the sake of conversation) in particular, and for the most part, those backlashes were justified, especially when the studios and actors involved went out of their way to antagonize the fans who were speaking up.
      It's gotten to the point that it's safer to take a jaded look at reboots as fans just because of the long history of bad and purposefully contentious reboots in the past. Though, in the episode's defense, there was some pushback for the Nolan Batman reboot that they're parodying here, but that one turned out to be one the rare good reboots.

    This feels like a more thoroughly developed, in-universe take on "Beware the Gray Ghost." For those unfamiliar it was a season 1 episode of Batman: The Animated Series in which Adam West plays actor Simon Trent. Trent was "The Gray Ghost," a Shadow-like TV character who has fallen on hard times due to decades of being typecast. Bruce watched the show as a kid and it had some effect when designing his costume, gadgets, and the Batcave. Not unlike how the Shadow inspired Bob Kane and Bill Finger.
    This had a lot more thought put into it and is a brilliant, beautiful way introduce a real hero into the series. Now we've got Cyborg who suits up more like Iron Man, and Batman. Slowly building to the Duckstice League.

    Great review. As a massive Darkwing Duck fan who considers it among the best TV series of all time, this episode was just straight up 10/10. The jokes, the themes, the references and easter eggs (it's honestly kind of ridiculous how many there are), the story, and especially the characters were done brilliantly. I honestly couldn't find a single fault with this episode as a fan of the original series. It is just that good. If this episode doesn't lead to a rebooted Darkwing Duck show, I will be incredibly disappointed.
    One thing I liked about the revised origin story for Darkwing is that the new origin is in essence not that different from the original series. There is one episode where Darkwing goes back in time to when he was just a small child, and while he is in that time period he inspires himself to become a hero in the future. It is a massive time paradox, but it is still very fitting and hilarious at the same time. The reworked origin is of course pretty different, but it retains that same spirit, and that to me shows a level of care when crafting this episode that I have rarely seen in reboots. As an old fan, the showrunners get my seal of approval.

    I also really love how this episode touches on how to reconcile the love of a series that's defined part of your identity and a lead actor that's become problematic. With so many stories coming out about famous people these days, it's not uncommon for people to have to consider that the actors that brought to life their favorite characters aren't good people. It can lead to a feeling of guilt for still enjoying the thing that meant so much all those years ago.
    I think it's a great lesson that no matter who the actors that played your favorite characters turn out to be, it doesn't change what that character meant to you. It's not somehow wrong to be inspired and driven by lessons you learned from a childhood role model, just because the actors were awful people offscreen.

    Despite what Tad Stones said in 2016, the original Darkwing Duck cartoon did present itself as though it did take place in the same universe as the original DuckTales cartoon. I'm surprised that you found this to be confusing since the original DuckTales was a product of the 80s while Darkwing Duck came out in the 90s. By the time Darkwing Duck began airing on The Disney Afternoon, DuckTales was over and airing only reruns. It's easy to see Darkwing Duck as a show taking place entirely after DuckTales was over, with Launchpad's enhanced competence easy to explain as a sign of character growth between the two shows.
    Plus, in Gizmoduck's chronologically first appearance in Darkwing Duck, "Tiff of the Titans", he comes to St. Canard from Duckburg (which even features a big billboard with Scrooge McDuck's face on it) and shows up at Drake's and Launchpad's place as Fenton Crackshell. Launchpad and Fenton are shown to already know each other, Launchpad introduces Fenton to Drake as his "old pal from Duckburg", Fenton namedrops McDuck Manor, and Launchpad says "Fenton and I used to work for the same guy."
    The first episode of Darkwing Duck also has Launchpad flying his old biplane from DuckTales before he upgrades to the Thunderquack, and numerous tie-in comics (both vintage and modern) published for both Darkwing Duck and the original DuckTales have further tied the two shows together by positioning Darkwing Duck as taking place after DuckTales. One epic five-part comic story from Disney Adventures magazine, titled "The Legend of the Chaos God" (scans of which are available to read online), even boldly attempted to place TaleSpin, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, and Goof Troop all in the same shared universe as DuckTales and Darkwing Duck as well, which I think is pretty awesome.

    2) Raiders of the Doomsday Vault - setting Della as the familys new pilot, freeing Launchpad’s schedule for crime fighting
    3?) Friendship Hates Magic - making Mrs Beakley a huge DarkWing fan, giving him an entry point into S.H.U.S.H. (OK, this one might be going to far)

    Very solid review of the episode, and I agree that the Ducktales crew clearly took their time to set it up and do it right, going to the original creative team and doing their best to incorporate the material into their new setting in a respectful way.
    It's one reason why I think that episode isn't just criticizing fans, but everything that goes into a re-make/reboot. I'd go so far as to say that of anything, the fans are criticized the least, since ultimately Launchpad and Drake are proven to be the ones in the right. Drake got involved with the project because of his love for the franchise and hopes to use his position to course correct the worst aspects of it. Launchpad's love for the franchise is shown to be completely pure and genuine, his only fault is that he lets that love get taken advantage of by others. The pair's love for the franchise is, if anything, shown to be endearing and a source of strength.
    Otherwise the folks that get the most criticism are the director and Jim. The director is clearly a parody of guys like Christopher Nolan, David S. Goyer, Zack Snyder, Ryan Johnson and Michael Bay, who purposefully take old franchises and intentionally change them to suit their own biases without regard for the history of the franchise or its core elements. They make the films darker and more violent, they intentionally subvert expectations, they dumb it down and sex it up to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Meanwhile Jim showcases the folks that will intentionally exploit people's nostalgia and love for franchises to satisfy their own egos and to get what they want. They don't actually care about the fans or the franchise, but will offer the promise of what the fans love without intending to deliver.
    It also clearly shows that some people will happily reboot a franchise without really caring about it. The director doesn't really have any love for the Darkwing franchise, and it shows in his approach. But it was something that was popular once, so it has a built in target demographic and is otherwise something a studio owns that could be making them money, but isn't. It's like how the last Predator film was basically a parody of itself and spent 15 minutes with the characters talking about how "Predator" is a stupid name for the alien.
    There's a reason why both Drake and Launchpad are both sympathetic while the director is pretty much never sympathetic, while Jim has brief moments of sympathy. Jim at least clearly cared about the franchise at some point, and lost his way due to his own egotism, and a reminder of what the franchise meant to him briefly brings him back to his senses. The director has no such moments of clarity.

    Someone else already connected Della as the returning Duck Family pilot to Launchpad getting a new job with Drake Mallard, but I kind of hope they also lean into the hint that Starling's obsession with Launchpad might turn the whole damsel-in-distress/sidekick (also usually in distress) thing on it's head with Negaduck pursuing Laucnhpad trying to get him on his side. Also the Gizmoduck vs Darkwing Duck rivalry and reluctant teaming up when a bigger threat shows up I AM SO EXCITED!!!

    I wonder how long they'll take to add Gosalyn to the canon. After all, if Drake Mallard represents all the good parts of Darkwing, that has to include being a father.
    On a related note, what are the odds of them pulling Goofy in for a cameo? They are fond of including Disney Afternoon references after all, and Goof Troop was a part of that. I'd also love to see Rescue Rangers make an appearance, given Donald's connection to Chip and Dale.

I personally think that true fans doing a reboot are the minority, and the one thing I didn't like about this video was how the guy kept saying that most WERE done by fans. If these people were fans, then why do they keep screwing up the remakes. It's not different, it's just BAD. Ducktales one of the cream of the crop remakes, not the garbage tier stuff that studios keep spitting out because it's easier to take an existing brand and remake it.

    I really loved this storyline. How the hero we grew up with (for the ones who lived the 90s like Launchpad) is an old actor of a Superhero Tv show whoes personality become distorted by his own ambitions (and totally lost it by seeing himself be replaced with a younger actor) in a way the creators of the remake of Ducktales both given homage to the old series and recognized their role as a "new" show. I was really feeling for Jim Starling as he was trying as the original to take back what it was his own: The role of Darkwing Duck (a role he dedicated all of himself and the only real recognized success in his career). But at the same time we feel for Drake Mallard the new younger "sharper" actor who is genuinely a good character and show the traits we loved in Darkwing Duck .It was really touching seeing for a moment Jim lower the chainsaw and see his own reflection realizing How much he changed from the image of a Hero. And how he then turned into Negaduck. Leaving like this the role of "good" guy to Drake and taking the mantle of the villain. (This origin for me was better than the original story of Negaduck)
