Fair point, but the fact remains that religious freedom is a right for all. For some reason unknown to me and everyone else with a brain, Christians target homosexuality as the ultimate sin. As ridiculous as it is, they're free to do so, and they should be.
If by genius you mean that when he could not come up with a skit portraying certain services being denied that made the bakers seem wrong that he just changed it to examples of discrimination based on WHO was ordering instead of WHAT they were ordering, then yea.
John and Mary request a cake with white frosting, decorated with pink and yellow roses for their wedding. The baker agrees. Bob and Larry request a cake with white frosting, decorated with pink and yellow roses for their wedding. The baker refuses. Is the difference WHAT was ordered, or WHO was ordering? It's not the baker that imbues the cake with meaning, it's the customer.
So just because the bakery owner said no, they are homophobic? By that process may I presume you are an atheist? I mean you have to either be FOR or AGAINST right? Or maybe is it possible that you simply disagree, and both have a right to your own opinion. That is the real issue here is it not? Who has a right to stand up for what they believe.
I don't pretend to know the mind of the baker. But when the baker said no, he broke the law. The baker can have his opinion, but opinions don't exempt us from laws. If it's my opinion that my income taxes are too high, I still have to pay them.
Actually, the Court ruled that the reason why the baker was allowed to refuse baking the cake was due to the fact that the baker had to write a message on the cake that was against his religious beliefs. If for instance, the same-sex couple had just requested a cake that said "Congratulations" or had no message written on there at all and the baker refused service, his refusal would be deemed as refusal to serve clients (which is what Jimmy is demonstrating), but that's not what the Judge opined on and that's not what happened in this case.
@@bx6969 The owner does not own the law and has to comply and abide it, by serving anyone who makes this request. Otherwise, you could potentially let a doctor refuse to save someone on the verge of death because of the doctor's belief. It's dangerous and unacceptable.
Just go to another bakery. The public decides if a business stays open by not going to that bakery again. There's no need to put political pressure on everything.
I think there might be a difference, because she is not being denied the dress because of her gender, race or sexuality but for her personality, which involves being married to Donald. But i'm no expert
It doesn't matter. Trying to justify the refusal to serve Melania and condemning the one who refused service to the homosexuals is wrong, because both are refusals because of background. You either condemn them both or you support them both.
I can't make sense of this whole stupid cake business. Since when does serving someone at your business or selling something you made for someone equal, "I approve everything you believe"? This means that every waitress, chef and bakery I go to has to approve of my faith? This whole thing is another one of those "I am a Christian and I am persecuted," when in reality, we are priveleged. Surprise! I am not only a Christian but a pastor who supports the lgbtq community. The Bible talks about persecution but those persecuted people were fed to the lions, crucified and burned alive. Being forced to bake a cake is not persecution like businesses saying happy holidays is not persecution. We might be losong our privelege but it is definitely not oppression or persecution. Besides Jesus said they will know him by our love not what we believe for crying out loud. I'm done...
Marriage between a man and a woman is a sacred entity. Christians oppose homosexuality not out of hatred for others but because it violates this sacredness, which is a reflection of God's own image.
Jeremy McGuire, you say that "Christians oppose homosexuality not out of hatred for others but because it violates the sacredness of marriage between a man and a woman"... Christians can believe whatever they want, the problem is not what they believe, the problem is what they impose on others!!! Anyone can believe in whatever, but they forget they don't have the right to impose on others their beliefs!!! If it was the other way around they would cry persecution, but when they do it is their right to believe!!! That has a name, it's called hypocrisy!!!
That’s not the point. The point isn’t even about religion, it’s about property rights and freedom of association. If you don’t wanna do business with someone you shouldn’t be forced to, it’s your right as the property owner.
Notice the awkward silence when Jimmy made fun of the priestess who was anti-'patriarchy' and put her under the same category as the anti-Semitics and homophobic. The leftist audiences were like, "Uhh that's not funny, Jimmy. She's right about patriarchy and we're with her one this one."
That stood out to me too, mostly because the audience laughed at every single joke, even about the hinduist who refused to serve steak, but when Jimmy made fun of a woman who hated patriarchy, there was dead silence. In that split second, they probably thought that Jimmy was mocking feminism and implying that feminists are 'bigots', so their instincts told them not to laugh.
*Here is GOOD NEWS:* Jesus Christ died on a cross to save people from their sin according to the bible(God's word). Then Jesus rose from the dead, 3 days later, thus defeating death. Anyone who believes this will not perish but will have everlasting life.
Ariana R it says marriage is between a man and a woman though. Which is why this is an issue. The bakers would have had to bake them the cake if it were for anything besides a wedding.
What I mean is that they are just trying to follow their religious beliefs. I do see that it is problematic. The true debate is are we going to tolerate Christianity teaching that homosexuality is a sin.
In the New Testament (NT) there are at least three passages that refer to homosexual activity: Romans 1:26-27, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, and 1 Timothy 1:9-10. A fourth passage, Jude 1:7, is often interpreted as referring to homosexuality. Jesus restricts marriage to opposite-sex couples when he cites the Book of Genesis during a discussion of marriage (Matthew 19:4-6 and Mark 10:6-9). The presumed references to 'homosexuality' itself in the New Testament hinge on the interpretation of three specific Greek words: arsenokoitēs (ἀρσενοκοίτης), malakos (μαλακός), and porneia (πορνεία) and its cognates.[1][2] While it is not disputed that the three Greek words apply to sexual relations between men (and possibly between women), some academics interpret the relevant passages as a prohibition against pederasty or prostitution rather than homosexuality per se, while other scholars have presented counter arguments.[3][4][5] The historical context of the passages has also been a subject of debate. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality_in_the_New_Testament

Ergun Dergun, the actual issue is a homophobic baker didn't want to bake a cake!!! How is homophobia different from racism...? Have in mind that in both cases people are born like that and have no say about it!!! If you think that being a homosexual isn't natural, please tell me at what age you decided to be heterosexual!? In fact, he is using things you can actually choose with others you can't, to make a point!! You can actually choose your religion and your own ideas, you can choose to discriminate... it's your choice... You can't choose what you are born with!!!
EMK I agree I am Christina and I want people to be happy and live happy lives. They shouldn’t be judged for being happy and marring their love of their life. Heck I even thought of going to a pride parade and giving out free hugs to people but we don’t have them in my town because it’s to small of a town.
Here’s an idea: When bigots refuse to offer their service to people due to their beliefs (religious, spiritual, personal, etc.) we dont support them. So every homophobic cake maker out there wont get a penny out of us until either A.) They agree to put their beliefs aside and help someone or B.) They go out of business. Suing them wont change who they are and just seems like a waste of time and money for the plaintiffs. Just boycott their business.
Lord IceCream Maybe you didnt understand me. Youre more than free to follow your bigoted practices that you defend with your religious beliefs, but Im equally free to not support you. So let’s say that you’re a Christian baker who’s against homosexuality. Me, a bisexual, does not need to support your business because I have the freedom of consumerism to go wherever I please because we live in a country that’s against monopolies. So ultimately, you keep your religious freedoms and I get to support a business that I agree with on how we should treat each other. We both win. You keep your beliefs and I keep my money.
Lord IceCream im sorry, I assumed that you were one of those people that regardless of what I said would get up in arms over “freedom of religion”. That was my mistake for making assumptions and Im sorry for doing so.

gays shouldn't be treated any differently but in the same time if the catholic baker baked a wedding cake for them it means he is celebrating with them which is against his beliefs. I find the decision of the court is reasonable
You're not entitled to people's services. If today the government can compel you to go against your beliefs, tomorrow it can force you to go against yours. And this is coming from someone who disagrees with excluding people based on things we cannot control like sexuality, race or age. If you feel so strongly about it, as a customer you have the power to seek service elsewhere.
Except that nothing about the request violates the person's beliefs. All they are being asked to do is bake a cake - which is their job. Nobody said they had to get married to a member of the same sex, just to fill an order and bake a cake which has nothing to do with their beliefs. I think this whole case was just poorly argued. It should never have been passed.

Last time I checked you don't write anything on a salad. If you can't see how these are two very different situations, you're purposefully ignoring it. This is why shows like these are utter garbage.
You're totally missing the point, Jimmy. She does cakes for gays all the time; however, she does not wish to participate in the wedding reception. It's the recognition of the union that's the problem and not them as individuals.
What if she refused to participate in the wedding reception of a divorce stained straight couple because that would be recognizing the union of two divorced people and would violate her Christian religious beliefs against divorce? Would you also support her in that?
Well, ok. What if you're a doctor and you have a patient who happens to be LGBT and they have cancer? What would you do than? Also, you're the best doctor for them to see. Are you going to refuse them service because of religous beliefs and let them die??

I would like jimmy to make a hit piece on Hilary clinton and Barack Obama and if he doesn't I'll sue him for discriminating against my political beliefs.
From what i understand the cake is an art form more than food so the restaurant analogy wouldn't apply. Just as writers can tell whether or not their books can be quoted for some political purpose (e.g. Dr. Seuss' book quotes used by anti-abortion folks for which Dr. Seuss was allowed to force them to stop), an artist (cake maker/decorator) can tell whatever their art can be used for. I would be against the government forcing artist to have to allow their art to be used for what they don't believe in.
Eggsn Bakon bakers do not bake cakes to make political statements, they are business, who are given work by clients. Furthermore, being LGBTQ is NOT a political statement, as that would mean one's existence and thus, God's judgement is within realms of political debate.
@gam mal - yet they bake for fornicators (Prangant brides) and adulterers (Second marriages). They aren't allowed to celebrate those either. By baking for 2 of the 3 groups and singling out 1 of them they are discriminating and NOT following their beliefs.
tenzin tsenpey It isn’t just about that, it’s about the fact that people are denied a simple cake because of their sexuality. It’s 2018 and people are still doing this bs.
Selale Z It is their work, they are dependent on the customers. An artist creates art and people buy it. A baker usually makes cakes upon the request of someone else. Not to mention it is morally wrong.
Owen forcing a practicing christian like the baker to bake something that goes against his beliefs is wrong as well. Just imagine forcing a liberal to be a republican, or vice versa. Only then you will see why the court sided with the baker.
Except that they could have refused service for any number of reasons. They were making a statement. In order for it to reach the supreme court - they were making a very loud statement. That's the issue here. Is that this is an excuse for people to discriminate while appearing to follow the law.
Is it really wrong though? The man did not refuse to make a cake for them, he refused to make a cake for same sex marriages. Should the government be able to choose what part of your religion matters? Its not like there isn't other bakers, in theory a free market would make decisions like this man's unpopular simply because he is driving away customers and there fore promoting other bakers that will serve these people for that occasion. He did not deny services based on who they were but for what they asked him to do, and that being against his personal belief.
I agree. There was a time that we needed the government to step in and say that you could not have White only restaurants, but today the public is better at policing itself. If the government continues to force political correctness on people, expect more Trump like leaders being elected.
This an absolute twisting of the issue. I do not like to pay taxes it violates my moral code of theft. Do I have a choice? No! If he did not want to write some homosexual phrase on the cake that is his perogative. If I am a plumber am I now forced to work for someone who does not want to pay me? As an owner you have the right to refuse anyone for whatever reason. There are plenty of bakerys, restaurants, hotels, etc that will gladly take your business.
The couple could easily go elsewhere, the baker has a strong faith, should they also be persecuted and go against their own faith. This wasn’t homophobia, it’s a matter of faith
@@Nonalhomophobie nope any business owner has the right to refuse service to a customer. The customer brings the invitation to treat NOT the business owner.

Maybe these two women thought of making some good money and came up with the idea of going to a bakery owned by Christians in the hope of being "discriminated against". Then maybe, as a spectator of this ridiculous television sketch, I should be able to press charges against Jimmy Kimmel (and the Television Network) for *discriminating against the Christians, for reporting facts in a misleading manner, for fostering hatred against a specific religious group and for public mockery.* Just food for thought.
If people can now sue each other based on how "offended" they feel, we are headed towards a total regime. But it seems as if only non-Christians are protected by anti-discriminatory laws. Yet again, we Christians are always the hateful discriminators (...who again are the only ones truly discriminated against as this video shows).
Nope not happening, free market exactly is the reason that they should instead be looking for a baker that willingly bake for them as how they want it, not force someone to make one if they dont want to. You dont want some shitty things on your cake, do you?

@PratosX . that is wrong but it doesn't affect me, from my first point of view, if a private entity denies to serve me, say given I was Nepali, I would just go to different bakery which now gets my business, I am not gonna cry infront of their store begging.
If you can't distinguish between refusing to service an individual and refusing to service an event you're not intelligent enough to be commenting on this issue
You can’t and shouldn’t force person to make something that violates there moral code. For Christians, refusing to do such a thing isn’t prejudice or homofobia, this is standing up for ideals. Not selling them cake in their own bakery is a moral/faith choice. They weren’t hurting anybody. For Christians this is really a violation of moral rules.
Not baking a cake for someone, 'cause of their sexual orientation is called discrimination, and I'm a Christian, but what morals? if they knew anything about the Bible it doesn't condemn homosexuality it condemns certain sexual behaviors like rape and prostitution.
True. Both sides of this debate are right. Someone has to have their rights trampled on. It is what happens when you have religion in a secular country.
Well, we have laws that say you can't choose who you serve. You can say that a cake is not a right, but remember that one of the requirements of a society is that it works for all. I half agree it is not a right and half see that it is and that the removal of it could be just the beginning. It is a can of worms that we will all watch get dealt with. I think they should just go to another bakery who WANTS their business.
My belief is to live and let live as long as no one is being oppressed or harmed. Forcing Christian bakers to have a hand in something against their beliefs is oppression. I know Kimmel is trying to say to what extent do these rulings go but on the other side if the rulings were not in the bakery’s favor, how far can the government go to go against your beliefs. There’s a reason we have a freedom of religion. And the thing is, is that if people don’t agree with how you handle your business and beliefs(from a capitalist perspective) you will go out of business because of boycotting. Those customers in this hypothetical scenario will likely never come back to that restaurant, give a bad review, and that restaurant will go out of business. Simple as that. Live and let live.
The argument is not pertinent, as the bakers own a private activity. Therefore they can decide what kind of service to provide and for whom they see fit. For example: if a Jewish baker has a customer asking him to bake a cake with the image of the Qur’an, the baker can 100% refuse to make the cake. Bye.
flower37075, how is holding a gun to their head and making them bake the cake just for being in a certain profession a good thing? If a KKK memeber walks into your shop you should have the right to deny them service and from what your saying if you do then you must get out of that service instead of having the right no to deny them your labour and materials.
Where is this gun you speak of? There is a difference between denying service to someone due to their sexual orientation and denying someone due to hate speech. In case you weren't aware, someone's sexual orientation isn't against the law, no matter how much you wish it was however, hate speech is against the law.
Maddy Mae It's less moral to deny someone service for how they were born. Would you say it's immoral to deny service based upon race or gender? Yes? Then pray tell why would sexuality be any different?
Maddy Mae well then the bakery shouldn’t be serving to the public then, if they want to pick and chose what types of people they bake for, bake from home and not as a publicly trading business, end of.
if i was refused serves for being bi i would be mad and sad :/ and i think my mom would be ten times madder than me. she'd probably go up and slap them. i love that my mom is so supportive
It's amazing the restaurant is still open then. With all these restrictions they could never make any money. No. They would be open for one day. That is how the free market works. You should be able to refuse service to anyone and not have to worry about legal ramifications.
yes .. shame that it is no longer fashionable to push a liberal agenda and also respect the basic freedoms of those you disagree with and recognize the power and benefits of market forces..
Umm.....This isn't a good analogy to the issue. There's a clear difference between a PUBLIC RESTAURANT chef & a PRIVATELY OWNED wedding cake bakery. If it were just a regular bakery, I would agree with this. As long as they make it clear to who they cater to, there's no problem here. Besides, weddings at base conception is a Christian practice made for the union between man & woman, sooooo....is there really any surprise here???
That man has the right to freedom of religion and people like you are trying to take that away from him. Even though denying them service is not the "morally right" thing to do it is his right to practice freedom of religion and to refuse service to anyone.
yes.. i can remember when Malcolm X and Germaine Greer and Abbie Hoffman and Frank Zappa and Lennie Bruce would promote a progressive or liberal agenda in a more punchy and honest way.. but this was sad and dishonest..
Ordering a salad for dinner has nothing to do with a religious ceremony. Ordering a cake for a religious ceremony however does. Therefore, this argument is null and void.
Freedom of religion is not freedom to enforce it on other people at their own freedom's detriment. You are free to believe what you want, but you are not free from the consequences of your actions.
This skit highlights the inconvenience a customer that is denied service would face... What about the inconvenience the service provider would face in being forced to go against beliefs central to his life?
Because beliefs are personal, but the service provider's beliefs discriminate thousands of people, not in something chosen like beliefs, but in something unchosen like sexual orientation.
What people don't understand is that such situation is private law, not public. If you don't like the policies of one private establishment, simply go to another. If it would be a public establishment (under governmental ownership) this would be a completely different situation. Plus, cakes are art. Art can only flourish with inspiration. If the artist/baker cannot see purposefulness with his art then how can he be inspired and actually MAKE it into art?
It's about being forced to write a message, Not the cake. What if a customer wants a Muslim baker to write, "pork is good for you" on a cake. Should he be forced to write it?
Bakers are "forced" to write messages all the time for all kinds of cakes. Why should this one be any different ? Your example with a Muslim is the same. Nobody cares about what the Muslim thinks of the message. This is not about him. The messages is not directed at him.
@@Nonalhomophobie The baker has no choice (prob fired) but the company that OWNS the bakery can! Keyword owner not employee. Also you can’t force Jew/Muslim/Christian to write something against there religions.

Why would you even want to support a business that has those kind of beliefs and is not accommodating? Bob and Larry request a cake with white frosting, decorated with pink and yellow roses for their wedding.
The baker refuses.
Is the difference WHAT was ordered, or WHO was ordering?
It's not the baker that imbues the cake with meaning, it's the customer.
So just because the bakery owner said no, they are homophobic?
By that process may I presume you are an atheist? I mean you have
to either be FOR or AGAINST right? Or maybe is it possible that you
simply disagree, and both have a right to your own opinion.
That is the real issue here is it not? Who has a right to stand up for
what they believe.
I don't pretend to know the mind of the baker. But when the baker said no, he broke the law.
The baker can have his opinion, but opinions don't exempt us from laws. If it's my opinion that my income taxes are too high, I still have to pay them.
I don't pretend to read minds. When the baker refused to bake the cake, the baker broke the law.
No one cares what his beliefs are, the baker is bound to write what is expected of him on the cake, so long as it doesn't break the law.

I'm done...
Daniel Lee Thank you so much for being the type of person you are.

That stood out to me too, mostly because the audience laughed at every single joke, even about the hinduist who refused to serve steak, but when Jimmy made fun of a woman who hated patriarchy, there was dead silence. True, but that is not what these bakers are doing.
Wait... what?

Lord IceCream Maybe you didnt understand me. Youre more than free to follow your bigoted practices that you defend with your religious beliefs, but Im equally free to not support you. Except, having a baker refuse to bake you a cake isn't having your rights trampled on. Last time I checked 'cake' wasn't on the list of human rights
Yes it is!
It would be nice if it was, haha.
Wow Jimmy totally missed the point the judge was making!!!
He was totally making a different case entirely
I agree with the baker … it was 2 lesbians who wanted the cake . The baker couldn’t make the cake because…. There is no “ LICKER “ in it .😝😝😝😝😂😂😂😂
The argument is not pertinent, as the bakers own a private activity. Therefore they can decide what kind of service to provide and for whom they see fit. For example: if a Jewish baker has a customer asking him to bake a cake with the image of the Qur’an, the baker can 100% refuse to make the cake. Bye.
No, service providers have to obey certain laws, and discriminating people is illegal.
Could the couple not have gone to another bakery?? It’s not moral to force someone to bake a cake LOL
Maddy Mae: Explain to me how it is "forcing" a baker to make a cake when that it is the profession that they chose.
flower37075, how is holding a gun to their head and making them bake the cake just for being in a certain profession a good thing?
So being violent is supportive?
@@abraham_gaming5904 Just me exaggerating a little bit, my moms super supportive , thats what I was getting at lol.

You’re not entitled to someone else’s labor.
Besides, weddings at base conception is a Christian practice made for the union between man & woman, sooooo....is there really any surprise here???
this is really bad interpretation of what really happened.
That man has the right to freedom of religion and people like you are trying to take that away from him. Even though denying them service is not the "morally right" thing to do it is his right to practice freedom of religion and to refuse service to anyone.
*Even if he thinks its wrong, the baker is just practicing his religion*
That made absolutely no sense, nor did it relate in any way to the decision of the court.
yes.. i can remember when Malcolm X and Germaine Greer and Abbie Hoffman and Frank Zappa and Lennie Bruce would promote a progressive or liberal agenda in a more punchy and honest way.. but this was sad and dishonest..
Well, it takes having sense to have sensed it to begin with, yet since you lack sense you may have missed the point.
This was a false equivalence, but still funny.
Ordering a salad for dinner has nothing to do with a religious ceremony. Ordering a cake for a religious ceremony however does. Therefore, this argument is null and void.
Freedom of religion is wrong?
Freedom of religion is not freedom to enforce it on other people at their own freedom's detriment. You are free to believe what you want, but you are not free from the consequences of your actions.
Just to be clear: The baker was perfectly willing to bake the cake, saying that they someone else would simply have to be the one to write on it.
Jimmy you're good, but this was the worst so far.
I love Jimmy. I love his creativity the most :)
The messages is not directed at him.
as a Muslim if I was a baker I would have no problem writing that on a cake, it’s my job to do as requested lol
@@Nonalhomophobie The baker has no choice (prob fired) but the company that OWNS the bakery can! Keyword owner not employee. Also you can’t force Jew/Muslim/Christian to write something against there religions.
@@AtheistWar Religion has no place in a business that is not tied to it ! The owner is bound to serve the customers as long as it is nothing illegal. If for some reason a baker refused to write anything for a mixed couple, would you approve ?? If a doctor refused to take medical care of you because you are a woman, would you accept it ??
Why would you even want to support a business that has those kind of beliefs and is not accommodating? You shouldn't have to force a private business to take your money if they don't want it; leave them alone and let them go out of business if they want to be that way. Support companies that are inclusive instead.
A person is free to make whatever he wants for whoever he wants. The free market will always find supply for a demand, so CHANGE CAKE SHOPS
