  • Due to being, hopefully, better at our jobs than when we first started 4 years ago, and all the changes to 5th edition since then we're taking a fresh look at some of our old multi class breakdowns!
    In this episode, we're taking a second look at Druid/Paladin. Druids have a huge new design element of unique uses for their wildshape. How does this impact their multiclass with a paladin, which has remained largely the same?

    Another fun thing you can do with this multiclass is, since you get 2 wild shapes per short rest and going into your starry form only takes 1 wild shape use. So you're a cat that suddenly starts to glow with constelations on it and now your shooting a bow at a baddy/villager. This gets more fun with flying wild shapes like a harpy eagle. (do harpies shoot bows?)

    See I always thought about this. What if I wanted to be a Druid but was converted to paladin through etc. I don’t see why it isn’t in AAA games yet. Imagine a Druid in cat, bear, or tree form in wow wearing gold and white armor. 😂😂 I would definitely do this.

    One interaction with Circle of the Shepherd that is worth mentioning (not sure if it was brought up in 2018): The 6th level feature buffs the HP of your find steed and find greater steed spells if you summon them as fey creatures. 6 extra HP for a warhorse, 14 extra for a griffon or pegasus. It also make their attacks magical.
    Other than that, I think you covered it pretty well. I would definitely go shillelagh with Jared's statline if I ever built something like this, and then use thorn whip as my "get enemies into melee with you" spell.
    Oh, you can also cast spike growth and have your griffin cheese-grate enemies by grappling them, flying over it and dragging them along the ground.

    I think the contention with druids and metal armor is that they won't wear armor comprised almost entirely of armor. Most people read this as metal armor being manufactured and thus in opposition to nature, but I think of it a different way.
    When a druid wildshapes into a beast, their armor and gear either drops to the ground, merges with their form, or is worn by their form. If you think about the equipment merging with their form, the sympathetic qualities of organic animal materials (leather, fur, bone, etc) to most humanoid bodies might make merging those materials with the druid much easier than something physiologically foreign like worked metal.
    Another aspect of the way I see it is the shifting of ones physiological form, say, from bipedal to quadruped, or changing size categories, might make it impossible to stay in hard, inflexible metal armor, whereas a leather, cloth, or other organic materials might be able to stretch and move to accommodate different forms.
    I think if you think of that armor restriction with these ideas in mind, then it would be acceptable for druids to wear metal armor if they primarily do not wildshape into forms that cannot accommodate their armor (apes and monkeys primarily), or generally use their wildshape in a way that those issues become irrelevant (wildfire, stars, shepherd, spores), then metal armor would be perfectly acceptable. And I would like to point out that the restriction language in the PHP does NOT say wearing metal armor or shields is taboo, just that they won't. RAW this limitation can be a limitation of convenience rather than out of some taboo nature.

    • @MonstersMulticlass

      Yeah I think the reason I feel so quick to ignore it is that it's put in as an after thought in 5e. No negatives are listed like they are for a monk who wears armor or uses a shield.
      I like that rational on why they can't and think it would work well for a character if they're ever asked why they won't use it.

    • @daviddalrymple2284

      The restriction on Druids wearing metal armor is even more nonsensical now that we have three playable species/lineages where the player character may be made of metal.

    Currently playing an Aasimar Paladruid. Took Oath of the Ancients and probably taking Circle of Land, Forest. Trying to be an elemental dragon knight, sort of like the Legend of Dragoon. My DM lets me wear metal due to my background. So the AC issue is solved.

      Consider requesting DM if dragon scales could replace the armor as well for those who might be looking for natural alternatives. If it works for the dragons than it should work for people right?

  • @kwaksea
    @kwaksea Год назад +1

    You may need to ask DM about "armor with alternative material" (probably some sort of magic related as we can see on Dragon or Serpent Scale Mail) due to Druid's "No Metal Armor" policy, even though many DMs are quite lenient about it.
    Maybe this would be the moment Spoor Druid is shining quite brightly as 4 temp hp per level is nothing to laugh at.
    Lastly, as strange as it sounds, Dex Close Quarter Paladin is still viable choice and Druid have access to Shelighle.

    What attribute spread if you are using a point buy system would you recommend for Paladin / Circle of Spores Druid multiclass? And is there a certain Paladin subclass you would recommend with it or does it matter?

    • @MonstersMulticlass
      @MonstersMulticlass  11 месяцев назад +1

      Depends on how far into paladin you want to go. If you're just going for smites, I'd just get CHA up to 14.
      If you're mainly focusing on paladin and just want some wildshapes, I'd keep wisdom lower.
      Depending on your armor limitations it may be best to try for a dex paladin too. So you can still wear medium armor and not have to get that to 16 and ALSO try to get STR up.

    • @DEADCASTdragonuff

      @@MonstersMulticlass Thank you for reply yeah I am thinking of going 2 levels in paladin for smites and the rest in Druid circle of spores so is Str 16, Dex 8, Con 14, Int 8, Wis 16, Cha 14 is that a good spread in your opinion for point buy?

    Interestingly enough in wild shape you should still be able to heal with your lay on hands feature, which should be quite useful for a (moon) druid who doesn't want to waste/have to come out of their wild shape to heal.
    Also it's kinda funny to have a big scary predator/animal come ... and put a paw on you and suddenly you heal a bunch.
    I haven't heard you talk much about dreams druid yet, although they don't have much they should be pretty solid as a bonus action based secondary healer aiding your main paladin skills. It's the only druid circle I know of that can do the wild shape heal without needing to multiclass, though having some extra lay on hands doesn't heard if you have the stats for it.

    • @MonstersMulticlass
      @MonstersMulticlass  Год назад

      I know I had dreams druid in my notes but forget if I ended up bringing it up.
      The extra healing is nice but it just lacks so much everything else that it's hard to justify imo.
      I love the lay on hands panda though. That sounds so cool

  • @daviddalrymple2284

    It is odd that the Spore Druid is one of the few "auto-buffs" that takes a full action to activate, but doesn't give you anything right away (except the temporary hit points. Most Druid "auto-buffs" are either bonus actions (Shepherd), deal damage at the time they are activated (Wildfire) or both (Starry Archer).

    • @MonstersMulticlass
      @MonstersMulticlass  Год назад +1

      If it was "You can spore up but you can only make a melee attack" I feel like it'd work well.
      I also think this is an ability that I encourage players to bait out early as it lasts 10 minutes.

    (Monsters of the Multiverse allows you to assign a free +1 and +2 or 3 +1s as you see fit) MotM Torle should be a good option here. Although Fizbans reworked dragons aren't a bad race either. (I guess I just like wild shaped breathweapon) 🤣🤣🤣😅😁😁😀

    • @MonstersMulticlass
      @MonstersMulticlass  Год назад

      Tortle seems to be a good option for any MC with a mediocre AC. It's starting to make me think that the race is a bit stronger than it should be. AC is just so good compared to other classes getting basic stuff like situational spells.
      Next campaign I run Im allowing tortles...thinking I may need to homebrew my own race for folks to use.

      @@MonstersMulticlass I actually fell asleep listening to this (not an insult, i put this on knowing i would fall asleep soon)
      He abuses a few wordings. Because the Heavy Cross Bow is a heavy weapon, and a ranged weapon if one makes a melee weapon attack with it, it is still considered an [attack with a ranged weapon] even if it is an improvised weapon attack. It isn't rules as intended, but it is rules as written. I just googled it, and there is some debate over whether it should work or not. I was just excited by how silly it sounded and wanted to share

    Well now all I can think of is like low to high tier bark armor... like a living armor.... forms around you and regrows as soon as its damaged.... then you could have different woods that have different magical effects to add abilities and better protection and elemental resistance! Gonna make that when I have more time.
    No ideas for builds tho, I still don't like paladin it just doesn't excite me or get the creativity flowing (as said in vid, the subclasses are soooo samey)

    A metal free armor just flat cannot exist. Buckles, Eyelets, rivets, grommets, are all made of what? And shields have metal bolts, bosses, etc.
    I’d allow Druids to use armor with some metal. Because the no metal thing is impossible from a practical point of view.

      When it comes to wearing Armor, Spellasters that arent proficient in heavy armor cant cast spells.
      With Druids, theres no mechanical consequence if a druid, who is Proficienct with heavy armor, wears armor
