thanks for reacting to this one :) - Also for some background here Frontman Winston McCall’s dog had died, his friend Tom Searle [guitarist for Bristh metalcore band Architects guitarist] had died. One of the dude’s partners had died of cancer - that had all happened in the space of a year, It’s attempting to place blame when there is none, seeking answers where there is only emptiness, and ultimately trying to find some kind of reason and meaning to justify the ultimate loss we will all be faced with in life
I was looking for this. And someone to say that the whole fighting god thing is not to be extreme, but because a lot of people think like this when they are going through such loss.
Their friends The Ghost Inside had also been in a fatal bus accident. All member lived but there were many extreme injuries including loss of a foot, and loss of a leg and more.
Even as an atheist, I love watching these reactions, particularly because you guys always give the band's a chance. I'm always looking to challenge my own beliefs and this channel provides an excellent and clearly vocalised counterpoint. While I still do not believe in god, or anything supernatural (my thinking is admittedly 100% man centered) I find a lot of what you say to fall in line with my own personal musings, even though we start from a different core belief system. Keep up the good work, I enjoy the mental exercise :)
By man centered I mean that my thinking is centered scientifically on humans as social creatures. We thrive in groups, and as such helping one another is our best mode of survival. Because of this, helping others makes us feel good, and is thus reinforced. A lot of Christian morals end up at the same conclusions such as a good person helps those around him. However, there are any things I can't believe in that are used to support this morality from a Christian perspective (admittedly I'm generalizing as there are a mind boggling amount of takes on the same Christian scripture). Such as humans being born sinners, and that by not accepting the Massiah into your heart, you can never be absolved of that sin. I truly believe that the reason we help each other is that we're are hard coded for these things to feel good and be fulfilling. We are born good, but suffer from the typical qualms of a top predator, namely that we turn that aggression against each other, which was passed down as a survival trait from before we were at the top. While this is true, I can't believe that the friend enemy complex of fascist ideology is necessary to a thoroughly modernized civilization (the idea that groups of humans require an external enemy for an agression outlet or else society breaks down to chaos). Through man made constructs such as education and unbiased science we can overcome these traits. The people who are born sinners are a subversion of good genetic coding, though again through science and the correcting of chemical imbalances in their brains these mental illnesses are starting to be able to be managed. The people who are born good but end in sin are often driven to it by those around them, either by lack of education, or the failings of our society which has good and moral principals but still fails to implement them on a larger scale. So excuse me for paraphrasing and using a term that was used in the video by someone other than myself without properly explaining what I meant by it, but as you can see, the explanation of this particular sect of my musings was rather lengthy. I invite anyone that disagrees to have a thoughtful discussion with me, because I'll listen and genuinely enjoy the chance to challenge my beliefs. However, I'd prefer if people refrained from jumping straight to name calling as it makes you look the part of the fool that can't form a proper argument, and that makes me incredibly sad for you.
Well, that's the ultimate goal of both sides of the spectrum (or at least it should be), acceptance and the willingness to give others a chance to vocalize their beliefs. And I definitely agree with you there, these guys do a good job of that.
@@collin3012 Look, you might be an atheist, but this I know. This channel supporting this song = Professing Christians. Never would a true Christian support such lyrics like this. Romans 10:9 "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is lord, and believe in your heart that he was raised, you shall be saved" Jesus is the only way, no other thing will ever fill the gap in your heart
Parkway Drive is an Australian metal band, they're amazing and have songs about almost everything, they focus a lot on environmental issues etc.. Here's what the song is about: According to Parkway Drive-frontman Winston McCall, guitarists Luke Kilpatrick and Jeff Ling, bassist Jia O’Connor, and drummer Ben Gordon-“Wishing Wells” is a meditation on the pain and confusion of loss. “‘Wishing Wells’ is the compression of grief into song,” says McCall. “It’s attempting to place blame when there is none, seeking answers where there is only emptiness, and ultimately trying to find some kind of reason and meaning to justify the ultimate loss we will all be faced with in life. This is how this chapter begins and will end.” Source is from epitah records Obviously the song touches about him/them loosing loved ones and are angered, saddened and confused and naturally their frustrations boil down to those who supposedly took the loved one either the devil or God. It may sound immature and angsty but that's not the point the point is all their grief and anger from loss being directed at either God or the devil for taking that loved one.
@@Immolator772 it's part of life, but it's a really dark part. It's inevitable for most people to blame something or someone where there's no blame at all (like the song actually says). So, no, it's not immature, it's sincere.
@@Immolator772 it can come across as so but when you understand the meaning and reasoning behind the lyrics it shines light on human emotion and the despair and anger we feel when a loss occurs to someone we love so dearly. I developed a whole new appreciation for the song and it's lyrical content when I looked deeply at the reasoning behind it and its raw emotion.
Yeah nah, thats a pretty quick & shallow assumption of the lyrics being stupid, or composed for shock factor, or whatever you said- it is a song from the perspective of someone whos lost someone in a sudden, unexpected way, and the anger part of the grief you feel in the process of grieving. Its been explained better, but yeah. Youre correct, absolutely not literal. Winston mccall is a lyrical genius, check out the rest of the album- honestly, their whole discography is a goldmine for analysis
In my opinion, metal is generally over the top to get the point across When when the song is about something personal you can relate quite well because we that have experienced grief (in this case) can really relate to the massive amount of emotion this song conveys
Completely. Everyone is taking it too literally, it's not meant that way. It's meant to emphasize the anger and the sadness in tragedy without having somewhere, or someone, to put the blame and your emotions on.
@@blazzer73553 lmao if you're saying that seriously, you either are too narrow minded to understand them or you're religious and just immediately deemed them trash because it offends you. Or both more likely.
"the lyrics were stupid" first off the lyrics are about loss and not knowing where to point the blame so they most definitely arent bad lyrics in any form, you just cant appreciate real lyrics that have a deep meaning behind them
i understand where the kids coming from though. the lyrics are in fact an attack on god and his beliefs. as someone who used to be christian i understand how those lyrics can make you feel. the pastor pulled through his true feelings though. it was a well done video by these guys and an amazing song and video from parkway drive and they aknowledged that.
I've laughed every time I think about that. lol. I was surprised. It's a little out of character for him to be silly like that. He's a pretty serious kind of guy.
@@roberthoughton7127 I thought it was awesome. Love you guys. Keep it up. Love to see more Christians on youtube. By the way, Don't get turned away by the name but: Divine Heresy - Closure is a fantastic song. A softer Metal, but really good.
The song lyrically make perfect sense for everyone that has the inner struggle from losing a loved one. If you lose someone close enough to your heart you question everything religiously and non religiously. This is been the best song and video that depicts inner struggle.
Winston (the singer) between album cycles lost a couple of close friends and it about him & the band coming to terms with that loss and trying to understand what happened and why it happened
im honestly interested if he would even think to react to this song. especially being a paster himself. I would love to see the boundry pushed though and hear his thoughts.
I feel yall left out about how he would do the same to the devil. A complete rejection of both. God, because he feels he is not present in his life and the devil for interfering in it. He hopes to confront God to let him explain himself. However God doesn't answer or respond (we all know how we react to people not answering when you are trying to confront them). With the Devil he wont give him that luxury, if he finds a shred of evidence that he was involved, he will pay
I love the song and the lyrics but I think that before interpreting the lyrics, if you're just taking them at face value they can be seen as just another edgy deathcore song mocking religion.
Even if not true, that is a fresh perspective and a nice play on words. And it's true. Every single "I'm sorry" in whichever form feels empty to some capacity.
This is a quote from winston himself "This is obviously the opener to the album and we wanted to put it first so it would be a real slap in the face. Every line is about the feelings of going through grief. It’s about finding some way to blame a horrible event when there is nothing to blame. There’s nothing or no-one to place the blame on and you make up things and you curse the sky and you look at yourself and think ‘what could I have done to change this?’ It’s also about when someone disappears from your life in an everyday sense and you start missing little habits. It’s purely a documentation of what that is like."
The man lost a LOT within a short time and this was his way of showing his pain, anger, frustration, confusion, and all the things that come with the loss of so many loved ones. He is speaking the feeling some people have of how can a god who is truely supposed to be someone's salvation could allow such pain and misery in the world.
I love the lyrics. All of them. As a former Christian, I understand how the lyrics offend you and make you uncomfortable. While I appreciate what you're doing, calling the lyrics "stupid" is a bit much and makes you sound like a typical hypocritical Christian. That makes it seem like anyone with different beliefs than you is "stupid". When someone like me hears these lyrics, it sounds like freedom. I really was trying to respect your opinions until you said the lyrics were "stupid". I think the Bible is stupid, but that's probably not going to gain any respect from you or make you want to hear my side. Yes, it would be "stupid" for a Christian to call out their god. To an atheist, calling out god is no different than calling out Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny.
This also shows how their bias blinds them. The Pastor and other guy focus in on the parts about god but the song is also calling out the devil too. The line "because tonight we are killing gods." Not God but gods. They are referencing every religious entity. This is why I do not take people like this seriously. They are unable to identify their own bias. It was for "shock value." This is obviously the opener to the album and we wanted to put it first so it would be a real slap in the face. It’s purely a documentation of what that is like. - Winston McCall, vocalist Parkway Drive.
Herald Balthazar Their bias also showed when they said that everyone is going to hell unless... (I don’t recall the exact wording). They’re open to different styles of music which is great but I definitely agree with you and the comment above.
Dude he said stupid maybe twice, but the rest of it they honestly analyzed. I don't think him saying the word "stupid" makes him a "hypocritical" Christian or a fake Christian
This is what Winston of Parkway Drive said about this song. "Every line is about the feelings of going through grief. Wishing Wells is the first track to their concept album called, "Reverance". If you compare the fry vocals from the beginning of this song (beginning of the album) and the fry vocals from the very last verse of the last song on the album. You can kind of understand the point. The "shock" parts of the song that you were talking about are less for the shock value, and more to drive the point of one of the lyrics you covered, "sometime all you wish for is a place to place the blame". So killing gods is essentially the idea of abandoning faith of all kinds as he mourns the death of a loved one. This is actually my favorite album of the last few years. Every song flows perfectly from one to the other and stays on message and really makes you feel as though you've gone through the trauma with them. I would actually suggest doing a condensed video of a review of the entire album. Love the channel dudes!
You can't call the lyrics stupid but then say you understand what he's saying. He had some bad stuff happen and he is angry about it. I understand exactly what he is saying and exactly how he feels. I get why you wouldn't like it or agree with it though.
This album has a very special place for me. My best friend attempted suicide and this album was a massive help to not only my recovery but also to his. He is doing amazingly well lately and has almost turned a complete 180 from his depression. Thank you Parkway Drive🙏
not to be that guy, but I think I was actually the first to request this song, also, as I'm sure others have stated (I'm only 8 mins in to the video and you guys might cover this later) But the singer just lost his dog and one of his good friends from another band when writing this record's lyrics, and he said the song reflects a place of darkness, basically when you're just lost and extremely angry over a loss you've faced. He touches to the counter of the whole "killing gods" etc by saying "sometimes all you wish for is a place, is a place to place the blame" I think that's a way of reflecting against the anger at god etc, like saying "I know it's not their fault, but damnit where to I put all this rage?"
@@sikaniska1978 pretty sure anyone that listens to the song has a high enough level of intelligence to come to that conclusion.. hence why I typed "metaphor" and not literal. If God was real it'd be pretty stupid to insinuate that you could kill either God or the Devil. Another way of perceiving it is that losing faith in God is a form of killing them in your own mind. "Thoughts and Prayers" are about as useful as a literal Wishing Well..
This song hits my heart so hard. My best friend since elementary school had her life taken by a man she loved in 2019. The rage and pain I still feel to this day... it's pure agony.
I actually love that song! Gauge plays it on the guitar all the time. I've never taken a look at the lyrics though. I just love the riff and the soothing vocals.
Robert Houghton unfortunately I’m afraid if you do that song it’ll be blocked in the U.S. I covered it on my channel. Actually it’s the one song that I’ve done a vocal cover, drum cover AND guitar cover of, and unfortunately with the change in copyright claims somewhat recently, they’ve all been blocked in the U.S. Or it’s always been like that and I just didn’t notice on the drum and vocal cover cuz those are from 7-8 years ago. I’m focusing on guitar now so I did that one just several months ago and noticed right away. Just a heads up. Maybe check beforehand if you can somehow do that. I’m not sure.
Do these: Lamb of God - 'Ruin', 'Desolation', 'Ghost Walking', 'Laid to Rest' Parkway Drive - 'Karma', 'Crushed', 'Dark Days' While She Sleeps - 'Four Walls' Architects - 'Broken Cross', 'Doomsday', 'Gone With the Wind' Bring Me The Horizon - 'Crucify Me', 'Mantra', 'Blasphemy', 'Wonderful Life'
As someone who considers themself as a non-believer, i enjoy very much how you try to view the song as the band intends and not to push the belief of god upon your viewers. Your reactions are great and very tasteful, well done and keep up the great work!
Even when listening to something that obviously opposes your veiw, you guys still find something positive to say. This is the type of open mindedness we need everywhere.
You know this passed year in 4 months I lost my grandfather who I was very close too, and lost a lady who raised me half of my life and was like a second mother to me. This happened while commuting to college my means of transportation had blown up and put down my 2 dogs. I clicked on this video not knowing the song ( for once) and could feel all of his emotion. By the end of that 4 month period I failed 3 out of my 4 classes. I guess I’m saying this all to thank you guys for doing this song because it was a rough road while walking in faith. Thank you.
I really recommend checking out the song "The Colour Of Leaving" from them as well. It's like the sibling of this song. The message is really similar, but the way of showing the pain is different. In "Wishing Wells" he is showing pure and raw pain and the way he feels that. I don't think we can judge how people overcome such horrible things.
Definitely think you missed the point of the song. He is hurting and pissed and rather than dealing with it and trying to over come it he wants to blame someone and make them pay so he chooses God and even the devil. Hence the line " sometimes all you wish for is a place, a place to place the blame" and when he says " the last thing that you wish for is the face, the face to face the pain".
This song is the most powerful that I've ever heard, it says and shows EVERYTHING I felt and feel when my best friend chose to die two years ago, the pain, anger, anguish, anxiety and rage inside me is explained here I'm so angry that he left me when I needed him so much, and I'm angry at myself for being angry at him when he did what he felt was his only way, to move on to something else, im dying everyday, this is how it feels to die inside of pain.. :'(
This song is a great way of how grief is and not at all stupid. Ive lost my daughter, a toddler. She had cancer, imagine you stand there in a room full with doctors that do there best to save your first and most beloved daughter and then there is this pastor who puts his hand on your shoulder with an sanctimonious smile on his face and said: "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." I can insure you. when you hear that, the devil and god wil die in you.... Chirstians know nothing of pain.
One year ago my mom passed away and yesterday I was crying my eyes out, because I was angry and missed her so much. And now I'm watching this video and it's so fascinating that I'm coping with grief so good right now compared to last night. Grief is weird Thank you guys!
“Nihilist” by Architects (All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us album) would be perfect for a reaction on your channel. I love most metal music and Architects is one of my favorite bands though I disagree with the lyrics of some of the songs such as this one.
This album came out a little less than a year after my mom died, and during that year, my younger sister contemplating suicide (her miscarriage on top of our mom, was too much), and I also was. This song fully encompasses the overwhelming grief and anger I was attempting to cope with at the time. Felt like there was no end in sight, no peace, no answers, just vast emptiness.
I'd love to hear you guys react to The Amity Affliction - Pittsburgh That song hits home with people struggling with depression. I know from experience (not trying to have a pity party) but when I was in a very dark and low place I listened to that song and finally got the help I needed. Would love to hear your guys opinion of it.
Thanks for finally listening to this one. I appreciate that you didn't just dismiss the lyrics as anti-god, but actually tried to understand what the writer was feeling. It's nice to see open-minded Christians, that's the kind of thing that makes the world a better place. You guys should listen to Oblivion by Fit for a King next. They're a Christian metal band and the song is sort of a prayer to God. I think you guys would really enjoy it.
The song is about Winston losing his mother and not knowing who "took" her. Hence why he calls out both God and the Devil. So this song isn't anti religious but he has this "hate" for losing a loved one.
Dude I was shocked when this guy first had to say the lyrics are stupid and pathetic? Like WTF! Really tells me, that he never had to deal with hard stuff in life up until that and just couldn't grasp the meaning behind the lyrics. How can someone read those lyrics and say they're stupid? Lmao, I'm baffled.
My opinion...badass song, unbelievable lyrics. Hes pissed and in pain. I've been there. He needs God's help and knows hes there but wonders why it happened. I would never have the balls to say face me to God , be careful what you wish for. No Shock factor. They're not anti christian..hes fuckin pissed. Some people break down and cry.. he writes a song and is aggressive with violence. I'd react the same Listen to Iowa slipknot. The lyrics, to me , are what god thinks about us.

I've seen your reaction a long time ago and your comments stayed with me. I am one of the people that disliked your video. Now I have actually lost someone really close to me and I'm relating to this song on a whole new level and I felt like visiting this again and giving my honest opinion and input. Let me give you a bit of a background about myself before you start judging. I used to go to church every Sunday and even sang with the church choir (in an Orthodox church). I have grown out of that, a long time ago and learned that it's just fantasy. If you had bothered to research the song and the story behind it before drawing conclusions, you would have learned that this song is a compression of feelings of anger, loss and grief and it's attempting to place blame somewhere, when there is no one to blame... to find some reason or meaning to justify the loss that we'll all face someday. And it does a really good job of evoking these feelings. You can believe what you wish... I wish I could rest assured that I will see my friend again. I wish I could believe she is somewhere out there, looking down on me... But there is no reason to think that will happen. And if your so called heaven is true, I wish it burns, as Winston says in the song... because how could my friend ever be happy there when she could see me drowning in my own tears over here? I'll give you another reason why she wouldn't be happy. Her parents never gave a damn about her, they actually kicked her out which eventually lead to her death because instead of saving money for treatment, she had to pay rent. By your own religion and beliefs, they'll be going to hell. My friend really cared about her parents, even though they cared nothing for her. How is she going to be happy in your heaven knowing that her parents that she cared about will burn forever? To even think that she is somewhere and is not really gone, would be diminishing her death and what she meant to me in so many ways. I cannot afford to indulge in this illusion that I will see her again... I wish I could... I really wish I could.... it would make things so much easier, but unfortunately I don't have that luxury and we had our last conversation and I will never be able to talk to her again. That is what makes it so hard to move on... Also it's clear that your son has never experienced loss over someone he really cared about, that's why he can't relate to the song and thinks it's dumb.
Well, if you're going to react to Parkway Drive, you should probably react to "Sleight of Hand" Seriously, I would love to hear what you guys have to say! P.S. Love your videos as a devout atheist, for reasons I cannot explain.
All Love from Brasil pastor , react to a Song called " I . the Planet " by a Christian metalcore band called Norma Jean . God bless you and your Family .
Hey guys i know this is an older video so you might not see this, but i just came across this. I think Winston's lyrics were taken slightly out of context here. He wrote this song from the perspective of someone who has lost someone and is looking for a "place to place the blame" to deal with their greif. "According to Parkway Drive-frontman Winston McCall, guitarists Luke Kilpatrick and Jeff Ling, bassist Jia O’Connor, and drummer Ben Gordon-“Wishing Wells” is a meditation on the pain and confusion of loss". ‘Wishing Wells’ is the compression of grief into song,” says McCall. “It’s attempting to place blame when there is none, seeking answers where there is only emptiness, and ultimately trying to find some kind of reason and meaning to justify the ultimate loss we will all be faced with in life. This is how this chapter begins and will end.”
As he states at the end "The devil and god have died inside me" for me speaks more to what is see as god is good and the devil is bad which leaves him numb inside, so for me he is singing about both the good and the bad memories with the things that where lost and that those keep hurting until you shut both off and all you are left with is nothingness or being numb.
I love that fact that as a pastor and a PK you guys make fun of the lyrics as “pathetic” and “made for shock” but at the same time try to sit and figure out why people are leaving the body.
I appreciate you guys getting to this one. It is certainly a song about grief and to me it seems to be reflective if not in a more dramatic and theatrical manner to Jesus asking God "why have you forsaken me?" God clearly didn't call out to the vocalist and in the end that was the death of God to him. I know the singer and whole band had been going through several deaths and this was basically the child lashing out at the father.
Parkway Drive is one of my favorite bands, thank you for reacting and giving your opinion on one of their songs. Please, please, please react to their song "I Hope You Rot", it speaks about the atrocities, or allegations thereof, of the Catholic church against children...great song! Thanks again guys!!
The intensity of the song always struck a chord with me, because I've been this angry many times. Filled with so much rage I could walk right up to the gates of Heaven, kick them in and drag God out and beat the piss out of him. It's an expression of rage and anger.
I stumbled across your channel tonight and Wishing Wells really hit me with the emotion in the lyrics. You can tell by the video that Winston was giving a emotional vocal performance. You are correct, in that we all experience grief differently. I think yall did a very respectful job on this video and just didn't count it off as just garbage. You gained a new subscriber.
Their music isn’t anti God, if you look at the lyrics and what the band members have said you’ll see that their direction is in confusion of loss and frustration. Look up what the band has to say and don’t think you understand their interpretation without research

it does sound immature, death is just part of life, blaming someone wont bring them back.
@@Immolator772 it's part of life, but it's a really dark part. It's inevitable for most people to blame something or someone where there's no blame at all (like the song actually says). So, no, it's not immature, it's sincere.
@@francibrock736 i thought the song was the opposite of that
@@Immolator772 it can come across as so but when you understand the meaning and reasoning behind the lyrics it shines light on human emotion and the despair and anger we feel when a loss occurs to someone we love so dearly.

He hopes to confront God to let him explain himself. However God doesn't answer or respond (we all know how we react to people not answering when you are trying to confront them).
With the Devil he wont give him that luxury, if he finds a shred of evidence that he was involved, he will pay

I believe the line, "drown you in your wishing wells" was a play on the fact that people wishing you well after loss can feel empty and hollow.
It was for "shock value."

There’s nothing or no-one to place the blame on and you make up things and you curse the sky and you look at yourself and think ‘what could I have done to change this?’ It’s also about when someone disappears from your life in an everyday sense and you start missing little habits.

You can't call the lyrics stupid but then say you understand what he's saying. He had some bad stuff happen and he is angry about it. I understand exactly what he is saying and exactly how he feels. I get why you wouldn't like it or agree with it though.

But the singer just lost his dog and one of his good friends from another band when writing this record's lyrics, and he said the song reflects a place of darkness, basically when you're just lost and extremely angry over a loss you've faced.
He touches to the counter of the whole "killing gods" etc by saying "sometimes all you wish for is a place, is a place to place the blame" I think that's a way of reflecting against the anger at god etc, like saying "I know it's not their fault, but damnit where to I put all this rage?"

Well, if you're going to react to Parkway Drive, you should probably react to "Sleight of Hand"

You guys should react to Silent Planet. Great Christian group with very thoughtful lyrics. Great guys to boot.
