    Andy "aTrippyFarmer" Dole is a 6th generation farmer from Central Illinois. On this farm, Andy works alongside his father, Marty, his uncles, Chris and Jeff, and his sister, Katie, to grow corn and soybeans on some of the finest dirt in the world. Andy and his family are deeply rooted in the area, operating a large farm that traces it origins back into the 1800s. Although some tracts did not stand the test of time, Andy and his family still grow corn and soybeans on fields that have been in the family for longer than even the oldest members of the farm have been alive. We do, we have, and we always will take tremendous pride in calling this piece of paradise our home. Andy was a Bronze Tablet graduate of the University of Illinois in the field of Crop Sciences, following the same path as his father and late grandfather.
    It would be misleading for Andy to claim that this life is one that came by chance; rather, as a member of two multi-generational farm families, it was simply in his blood. His passion for agriculture traces back to his early youth--some of his fondest, earliest memories being of days spent riding in the combine with his father and grandfather. Although his understanding of the lifestyle was much less complex in the beginning, the love he has for farming, and its industry has only appreciated through time. As this dream blossomed into adulthood, Andy now works relentlessly, and tirelessly, to chase his own dreams and to build a farming operation of his own alongside his family.
    We, as a whole operation, are handymen, electricians, mechanics, landscapers, accountants, economists, caretakers, stewards, and, most importantly, farmers, and we take an incredible amount of pride in our work. There is no challenge too overwhelming, no situation too stressful, and no problem too difficult for us to take on, and we want to take you along with us. Welcome to our farm and welcome to our lives. You have the best seat in the house to watch the everyday chaos of farming unfold--we usually only get concerned when things aren't going wrong!

    Andy, these big huge companies that are buying up car dealerships by the dozen are not good news for the consumer. You said it best, it gives us less options. The trend of consolidation in literally every business does not bode well for consumers. Grocery stores are one giant example of this. Less competition means better price control for the owners of these megatron chains. I fully expect this whole shift to consolidate to end in a disaster for the people buying up everything that ain't nailed down. The massive amount of debt they're taking on will come home to haunt them, it always does.

      Meh
      Farms do the same thing. Farms that were five or six hundred acres 40 years ago are now three, four thousand, even ten thousand acres . That land didn't magically appear; larger farms buy smaller nearby farms when they can

      @@davedammitt7691what started that trend was Carter in the late seventies. And early 80’s when interest rates were almost 20%. I was a kid but I remember it well. Farm sales where equipment brought nothing. I remember all the small farms and in our area, most are gone now, but the farms are named for them. My Dad and uncle got lucky, survived and grew. So have my brother and I. And now it’s our kids turn.

      I think it all depends on the uniformity and quantity of the product that they are selling/providing. Farming is tough because every farm can sell the same corn, even farmers in different countries. That has allowed the game to stay very cheap from an output side. Car dealerships, equipment manufacturers, etc.. all sell products that are limited in supply and artificially controlled in production. It allows the consolidation to become more profitable. You could never have that with corn, for example.
      With that being said, the scary part is that some of these farms, these dealerships, these businesses, etc.. have access to way more capital than anyone else. They may or may not have made incredible amounts of money over the years from the business or outside investment, so continued expansion is a safe use of their assets.

    • @TheRange7

      @@aTrippyFarmer Andy, the huge difference between now and pre Biden is the cost of money has gone up exponentially. Even top borrowers from gigantic institutions are paying a great deal more now. You can't just keep expanding without going into huge debt. The interest you pay now as compared to the QE free money is substantial as you know. I don't think anyone as a consumer has benefited from all this consolidation. The fert companies are just one example in your business. The less competition, the more fixed the prices become. HAving traded on the floors in Chicago my entire adult life, I learned that supply and demand ain't always what it's supposed to be. That an entire different discussion though. Cheers buddy, I hope the crop is healthy. We're supposed to get some rain up here west of Chicago this week. We need it.

      @aTrippyFarmer  Месяц назад

      Corn is a very sensitive one for cover crops. I think you have to be very careful with what you choose to use for the cover. I also think you need to run a starter fertilizer. Soybeans are definitely less sensitive to something like rye, but it certainly slows them down some. Like I said, our herbicides also slow them down. You just have to pick your battles carefully. I didn't put a residual on a field of beans for logistical reasons. Those beans were easily 3-4 if not 5-6 days of growth ahead of an adjacent field with a residual. We run very crop safe stuff as well. Zidua SC or tendovo for all soybeans. The only downside was that the no-residual soybeans were flush with waterhemp...

Would t warranty it. I deep sixed it and went back to a Deere and now I have the carbon fiber booms. Had them two years and not a problem one. They may or may not have had high speed impacts with the ground,,,,
    I’ve planted cover crops since the late 90’s. You’re right, there is give and take. It’s does put you behind. Especially on a dry year. However, you are a hundred percent right, the organic matter pays off. I won’t quit doing it. But I quit using rye. It gets too big and rank some years, so I only plant beardless wheat, and hit it with burn down before it heads out.
    On the dealership, in my lifetime it’s happened to me 3 times. First was a family owned dealership my dad and granddad dealt with. They sold out to High Plains which was a monster. They ended up closing down and selling off several stores including ours. But two brothers bought it 15 years ago and it’s better than ever. Change is inevitable and nothing stays the same.

    Here in upstate NY, jd dealership are being ate up by large ones. Now u can buy a lawn mower from any store but tractors can be only purchased by areas. No way to get better prices, the big get bigger and we the consumer have to eat it if you're loyal to the brand.... Just wrong

    • @aTrippyFarmer
      @aTrippyFarmer  Месяц назад

      There is a lot more competition in the residential lawnmower market than there is in tractors. I can think of 5+ different big lawnmower brands available at different stores in town, but there is only 1 tractor dealership here. It's all sunshine and roses when grain prices are high. When things come back to reality, farmers need to start thinking long term with their money and not just spending it all on outrageously priced equipment. We aren't innocent of that ourselves.

    • @aTrippyFarmer

      There is no reason to invest in technology like that unless you are committing to organic farming. Unfortunately, that same technology also makes the organic premiums less lucrative because it is becoming easier to grow in terms of weed control.

    We lost our local John Deere dealership 20 years ago it was started in the 30s.Owned by the same family.Was sold to quality equiptment most deere dealers in Sc, NC and Va are Quality.Dont like them. As for your fiber you dont up to the roadway there a right of way depending who owns the rd ,cam be 25 to 50 feet from center of roadway on each side of the rd, but if look at the surveys its survey to the center of the rd you pay tax on that right of way but the township or state can do what they want with it no matter what you say.

    • @aTrippyFarmer
      @aTrippyFarmer  Месяц назад +1

      You are right on the rates. This farm is more of a custom arrangement. The owner is a yield chaser, and he believes that the whole package of added plant health with other foliar nutrients creates a powerful synergism on yield benefit. I don't know exactly where he gathered that, but he knows farming more than most.

      I literally indicate that I was unsure about it. Johndeere is a woke joke anymore all they care about is keeping the stock price up and the shareholders happy. They got everyone by the balls that invested fully into the Deere ecosystem. Alot of farmers wouldn't care about switching colors of equipment, its the technology side that would be hard to completely re adjust to a new system.
