A good rule of thumb for a new handle is to treat it with Boiled Linseed Oil or Tung Oil once a day for a week, once a week for a month, once a month for a year and then once a year(usually in the fall). You can treat more often depending on use.

That is a great rule of thumb! Thank you for sharing the wisdom and experience!

Perfect video as usual Mr. D'! We used to teach these techniques in 2nd class and Totin chip. It was often used in Scout Shows as a recruitment tool. The Scouts would demonstrate on various tools and knives , then invite fathers and prospective scouts to demonstrate the activity, I t was a very popular part of the show. It also was an excellent way to recruit dads into the program. Those dads were then able to see their benefit to the troops, as merit badge counseling , and more importantly spending time with their sons as they participated in growth and development. We used to have the dads be an audience for Scout led demonstrations. The scouts got to develop their teaching skills, the dads got to see what their boys were doing1 hour a week, and we were seldom lacking for adults when we needed them. Dads and other adults(uncles and others) really enjoyed participating at campus, Scout shows, Klondike Derbys and other events. Scouts enjoyed preforming for the adults, the Dads and other Adults were proud to see what Scouting did for their boys. There were many a winter camp where there were as many adults going as Scouts. Dads would participate in everything from working on Merit badges, demonstrating outdoor skills, drinking coffee while the Scouts demonstrated the activities needed for promotion. Please continue to do these videos. Somewhere some Dad and Son or Daughter are watching. They could very likely become a new Scouting family. The world needs Scouting Families, now more than ever!
    Prayers for You and yours

Thank you and what a great idea. This is something I need my Scouts to organize. This reminds me of a scene in a movie I loved to watch titled Follow Me Boys, and in it there is a scene where the Scouts are presenting a scout skills show. I think the adults would get a kick out of one!
