  • Last year, about 800,000 Indian students went abroad for higher education, and spent 146,000 crores yearly on their tuition fees alone. It is estimated that by 2024, 1.8 million students will go abroad and spend about Rs. 6.4 trillion in tuition and living expenses; that is, 2.7% of India's gross domestic product (GDP). Given the staggering growth in students going abroad for higher education, India is experiencing a big drain on its finances and human capital. Indian universities should take the lead in retaining talent on their shores, and this can happen by universities mining our vast knowledge heritage and exploring how it can be used to address emerging global challenges. We need not chase global standards of producing high-quality scholars.
