Driving the Beartooth Highway in Wyoming and Montana (+ East Rosebud Trail to Elk Lake!)

- Опубликовано: 23 июл 2024
- We've headed to the Wyoming and Montana border to drive the famous 68 mile Beartooth Highway. This drive is said to be one of the most scenic drives in the United States and gains 5,000 ft of elevation as it winds through Wyoming and Montana, connecting the northeast entrance of Yellowstone National Park in the west and Red Lodge, Montana in the east.
Despite the smoke making the views a bit hazy, we had a blast driving this road and checking out some of the top sights along the way, plus going for one final hike in the west in Southern Montana.

Lifelong Michigander. If you come here a few tips: UP has great hiking at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park and at Pictured Rocks. In Munising they have sea kayaking, glass bottom boat ship wreck tours, and scenic boat tours of Pictured Rocks. And lots of waterfalls. Other great stops: White Fish Point, Tahquamenon Falls State Park, Palms Book State Park, and Fayetteville State Park. Straights of Mackinac area and Mackinac Island are wonderful, but expensive and touristy. Local great foods: thimbleberries and thimbleberry jam, fudge, - and pasties!! You have to eat pasties in the UP. Lower: Sleeping Bear, Ludington State Park, the whole area around the Traverse Bays, Wilderness State Park, canoeing and kayaking on the Au Sable River. Hidden Gem: Headlands Dark Sky Park outside of Mackinaw City. Great local foods: anything cherry! in the late summer/autumn: anything apple - especially apple cider and donuts. Great waterfront towns and cities: Marquette, Munising, Grand Marais, Harbor Springs, Petoskey, Charlevoix, Traverse City, the little towns near Sleeping Bear, Ludington, Grand Haven, Saugatuck, Holland, South Haven. Cheboygan and Tawas City on the Lake Huron side. For camping: the national lakeshores, national forests, state parks, state forests, county parks, some township/town/village/city parks, and private. We have a lot of wineries, microbreweries, orchards, and specialty farms, so it might be a good time to use Harvest Hosts if you have it. Have fun in the Great Lakes states! And be careful in the Great Lakes themselves - they are more like oceans than lakes, complete with heavy waves and rip currents. Most people not from around here do not realize how wild they can get.
Thank you for all of the tips! We have a good chunk of this on our list! 🙌🏼
My favorite scenic drive, especially on a motorcycle!
We bet that is an epic ride!
Having enjoyed your productions for several months now, I am impressed with how much you've grown in production ability. Would you consider doing a teaching video on how to edit, mix music (your choices seem to fit the situation so well) and what it takes to film the both of you together when the camera seems to be held by someone else. The staging of one of you coming and/or going. also seems to take a lot of planning and thoughtful preparation. This video was aided immensely by the drone video. How is that accomplished? Looking forward to the vicarious experience that the two of you so richly provide. Thanks and Shalom!
Hi! Thank you for the kind words! We don’t have the bandwidth right now to make a video editing course, but we definitely like sharing the behind the scenes of how much work goes into making these videos! We talked about it a bit on the pursuit of happiness podcast recently!
Next on my long bucket list. So blessed to live in Montana!!💖 Great video
The reflections of the mountains in the water was so beautiful!!!

I have been on that beartooth highway a few times in my life. It is so breathtaking and beautiful.
Another great video, each one better than the last! Beartooth Highway is on the bucket list! Can't wait for your travels to Michigan and the NE!! Be safe.
Very excited to share the Great Lakes and New England!
Your photos are captivating, inspiring and intriguing! Makes us want to get out there!
Thank you so much Teresa! All we could hope for is to encourage others to get out there!
Thank you for another terrific video. Now we will have to drive the Beartooth Highway next time we're up there. Travel Safe.
It's amazing! If it was gorgeous with smoke, we cannot imagine what it is like on a clear day!
Beautiful! I miss my home state! Have not been on the Beartooth in 32 years! Thanks guys!
What a gorgeous state to have lived in!
Awesome video & a great way to finish up your trip to the West. The images were spectacular especially the trail to Elk Lake. I thought some of the shots were framed really well & the use of the natural light & resolution was spot on. Keep up the great work. 👍
Thanks a bunch!
Amazing Mountain 🏔 View’s especially with your drone!
Thank you! Glad we could legally fly the drone here!
Só beautiful! So glad I live in the northwest! Easy to take this for granted.
We ❤️ the NW!
Hey Guys, fantastic video!! The done shots of the Beartooth Highway were incredible! Wonderfully scenic hikes! Wished you had included more video time of the road as it made it's way downhill to Red Lodge. It's an amazing 20 miles of pretty constant 6% grade working down the side of one mountain. Have driven it twice and have fallen in love with it but also know how how intense the drive is so understand that you were undoubtedly being safe in keeping 2 pairs of eyes on the road and didn't want distractions. Again, great episode!!
My family loves seeing your travels, we’re definitely going to take some of your suggestions for our Colorado trip next month!
We hope you have the best time!
Just awesome !!! Those switchbacks.....I immediately imagined what it would feel like to cycle there. With sun above and dots of snow below, perfect weather !
Cycling there would be epic!
Another awesome adventure. Such beautiful scenery! The drone views of the road switchbacks were really near. All the drone views were great! Red Lodge looks cool..... oh no taco fail ! The lake hike looked awesome!
We were so pumped to finally be able to fly the drone again! Not a bad spot to film from above!
All of your videos are so incredible 😀. I always watch them two or three times. They inspire me to go our and see the same places you do. You have the best tavel adventure channel on You Tube 🥰.
Thank you so much Richard! We hope you can visit these places!
Such great photography! Well done. You guys are outstanding!
Thanks so much Randy!
An awesome scenic drive. Enjoy your travels east. The Great Lakes region are a terrific destination, although crowded in places. Northern Michigan and its Upper Peninsula are wonderful.
We are loving the Great Lakes so far!
Another great video! The views are incredible! You’re heading my way! I look forward to your ND video (heading there next year) and to see what you enjoy in the Great Lakes. I’m in SW Michigan and have noticed a lot of Michigan vlogs this year. Glad everyone is enjoying MI.
We hear it's amazing there! Can't wait to explore!
Oh I got to go to Yellowstone by myself a few years ago and wanted to do the bare tooth highway but it wasn't open yet too much snow so thank you so much for the beautiful drive-through such gorgeous country, Thank you so much God-bless you guys
It is amazing scenery! The Bear Tooth highway is a fun drive as well
Thanks perfect timing, we're in Glacier and were planning our route to Cody WY. Thanks for all your videos. Looking forward to WI trip/videos.
We hope you are enjoying glacier and enjoy the beartooth highway!
Thanks for sharing your beautiful country.Safe travels God bless.
Thanks for watching Doug!
Such a badass video of the Beartooth has never been done.. hats off!
Thanks a lot, Craig!
I live 3 hours from Yellowstone N.P. and three weeks ago we drove out of Yellowstone, through Cody, WY, up the Beartooth, back into Montana at Cooke City and into the park to see the Lamar Valley in the evening. Gorgeous drive! Funniest sight was a big bison lounging in a school playground a few feet from the highway in Silvergate, Montana. With binoculars and telephoto lens we watched a grizzly feeding on something in the Lamar Valley while two bison stood nearby. To the left several hundred yards a wolf was stalking something near a large group of bison. Thanks for your great videos.
Wow! That is amazing! We drove through Lamar Valley the day before starting this drive and only saw tons of bison. But would’ve loved to see a grizzly and wolf!
Really Great! We tried doing the Beartooth Highway when we did Yellowstone about 5 years ago but it was closed because of snow and it was the third week of September. Now I see what we missed!! I loved that hike you did to Elk Lake. And don’t you just love the “free range cows”!
We love all of the cows! It’s funny how we see cows all the time in Texas, but seeing them in other places still gets us very excited haha
You both are our favorite adventure couple. We love all your shows of the Great American West. (Just not much on the Eastern part of the U.S.) Know you can't be every where at once... but the monsoons are insane here in Arizona. So we're getting the most beautiful crystal clear skies with those majestic humongous crazy clouds you ever saw. Dash the golden hour rays across them and you have yourself a platter full of delicious eye candy!
That sounds beautiful! 😍
Oh my!! That drive was very pretty but your hike was even prettier!! How beautiful!! Saw deer and I think an eagle soaring up above. It never gets old. Will have to put that drive on our list of places to go. Enjoy ND, we were just up there in June. Saw Whapeton and Fargo, but that was it for that trip. Not a bad state if you like flat land! lol I know it's not all flat but there were no mountains where we were. Have fun!
It was such a beautiful end to our time out west! We had a great time in North Dakota too, minus even worse smoke lol!
Very nice countryside view from Clay Butte!! Brother lives in Northern Idaho and its very beautiful around there as well!! Thank you both for sharing 😀👍
We love Idaho so much! 😍
I drove the Beartooth Highway many years ago and I don't remember too much about it but what I do remember is the drive out of Yellowstone to get to the Beartooth Hwy. What beautiful scenery in Yellowstone driving along the river seeing fly fishermen and gorgeous mountains! I will never forget that drive. You guys use a lot of technology and I am just now starting to do more videos. When I first created my website years ago video did not help with traffic much even though it is great to watch. So I took mostly photos but now I'm starting to more and more do some videos. Maybe in the future I'll get a Go Pro or other video equipment to make videos. Thanks for the nice scenery. I don't even remember stopping much on the Beartooth Hwy. except maybe for some lookouts.
We hope you can drive it again! There were so many amazing stops to pull over, it took us way longer to drive it than planned. It’s gorgeous out there and Yellowstone is beautiful too!
A scenic drive sounds like just the ticket after that 3 day hike! That area with the switchbacks is STUNNING. Would love to explore further north than the Southwest here. One day!
We hope you can someday! We LOVE the Rockies!
What a spectacular drive and hike! I’ve heard about this one and it looks like the view rarely disappoints, even with wildfire smoke. Adding it to the list :)
It is epic! Even with smoke!
Stunning scenic drive❤️😍
😍😍
Great vlog of 2 of our favorite states! Just not in the winter time! BRRRR!!!
Hahaha yeah, we'd move to Montana in a heartbeat, but not sure these Texans could handle the winter!
Yeah us Floridians either! If you see our content, it's almost all in Florida or warm places!
Awesome can’t wait to see the Northeast
We can’t wait either!
OMGosh Beartooth Highway and East Rosebud Trail to Elk Lake looked like a postcard that never ends…BEAUTIFUL! Thank you so much for taking us along for the ride! I’m so glad that we’ve been watching the blogs on the TV…makes it spectacular!
It was the BEST way to end our time our west! So hoping we can go with y’all next year ❤️
Would love to go! I forgot to mention how much I love the picture on the cover of this vlog…so cool and gorgeous!
Thank you!!
Very well done. I'm headed to Yellowstone in October so I might try the Beartooth Highway. You mentioned traveling to New England after the Great Lakes. Lots of mountains in New England and the highest one is Mt. Washington, New Hampshire. I climbed it on the Tuckerman Ravine trail (up and down) from the AMC Pinkham Notch Visitor Center. It was harder than Mt. Elbert and we know how hard that was. Great videos. Thanks.
We can’t wait for the mountains up there! Not sure if we will hike Mt. Washington, as we hear the weather is gnarly, but definitely plan to do a couple high points in New England!
Driving back to Wyoming this fall. Will try to do that scenic road, looks amazing! You will LOVE New England in the fall. We were there for two weeks a couple of years ago and took thousands of pictures, literally! Be safe.🤗❤️
We cannot wait! 😍
Like John Steinbeck said, "I am in love with Montana. With other states I have admiration, respect, recognition, even some affection, but with Montana it is LOVE."
Montana is amazing! ❤️
Love the Beartooth Hwy!! No place like it!! First time we went over it in 2018 they had just opened the road up for summer and man the snow on the sides of the road was higher that my head! It was amazing! Last time we stay in Red Lodge MT it was a neat little town! That hike y’all did was beautiful!!
We would love to see that! We one time walked on a still closed road in the north cascades that had snow walls still and it was so fun!
East Rosebud and Beartooth Pass are in our backyard. Your drone views were awesome and remind us that we take our backyard way too much for granted. You kids do a nice job of camera work, informative work, and we love the bloopers at the end! We're going to keep following you!
Thank you very much! Your backyard is amazing!
What beautiful scenery! Hated to see you leave the west. It’s a very special place. But ever onward. I really appreciate your videos. 👍
Lots more of the west to come next year! 😃
This was great! 👍👍👍
Thanks Jeanie!
Hello Adventurers😊😊, WOW!! Beartooth Highway is an AMAZING ride. It's totally different from Trail Ridge Road with those never ending switchbacks. So now your headed to North Dakota...that state was my 47th state in which I explored Fargo and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. I drove through the lower Peninsula of Michigan and the Upper Peninsula...so many lighthouses. Looking forward to eventually exploring Upstate NY and all of New England. I would love to show you so many awesome places, but 1st...North Dakota and can't wait to see that next video👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍!
It sounds like we have visited and are planning to visit some of the same spots! Can't wait to share what we have been up to!
Great Video!! I am (personally) sad you guys are leaving the west....I LOVE the scenery!
We are too, but we will have some beautiful spots to share in other areas too! And next year we will be spending a LOT of time out west, so much more to come!
Omg…I’ll be in Jackson Hole this weekend and then heading to Montana. This is perfect!! You guys are awesome
Have the best time!!!
Big mudslide in Cooke City so check the roads before you head up! And the part that spits you out to Cooke City in Yellowstone is closed! Try Cody to Beartooth! That’s what we just did Wednesday!
Thanks for this video. We are going to Yellowstone in a couple weeks and will be taking bear tooth pass. It looks scary but beautiful!
It's a great drive! We hope you enjoy it!
Wow another beautiful adventure! The drone shots were amazing! Great video guys! ~Cara 😊
Thanks Cara!
in 2015 I road my Harley D. from SO. CAL. to Yellowstone to Cody then up the bear tooth pass in august, the road is quite epic on the cycle at the top there was still large chunks of ice , the red lodge cafe had good food . your drone shots where great thanks!!!
That drive was so much fun and the views are amazing. That would be a fun drive on a bike!
But what an spectacular views and adventure
Beautiful drive and beautiful hike. I always love the drone footage and those shots delivered. Great work as alway.
We were suppose to be in Yellowstone this past June and had plans to drive Beartooth. However, unexpected medical circumstances made us pull the plug on the entire trip. The day we were scheduled to enter Yellowstone that massive flooding occurred and shut down the entire park.
That hike took me by surprise. I looked it up but unfortunately it looks like the flooding has impacted trailhead access.
The Beartooth Highway is super awesome! That is a bummer to hear about your trip, but I guess it's good you weren't there when it was flooding! We hope you can go back soon! We were lucky to go to Yellowstone this year with Kathryn's parents
Y’all do great editing with these vids😍
Thank you so much!!!
Glad to hear that you're headed to the Great Lakes States. Being an Illinoisan, I know that you are going to love Wisconsin. So many great towns and natural areas, state and national parks. FYI, there are more lakes in Wisconsin than in Minnesota, the Land of 10000 Lakes.
That’s what we heard! We are excited to visit. Only able to visit a couple areas, but know we will love what we are able to do!
My wife and I did the Beartooth Highway a few weeks ago just before it closed. There was snow at the top which for a Texan like me was fun to see. I enjoyed the drive but my wife was scared the whole way.
Beautiful place
Thank you for sharing that amazing hike! I'm certainly hoping any bear sightings will be from a safe distance.
We thankfully have only ever seen them from the car! But it’s rare we even see a bear that way!
That scenery at 5:02 is insane. It's like a sheer line where the trees and green just stop and the yellow-y orange rock comes out of no where. I'd have expected it to be grey like it was in the Wind River Range.. "Please drive slowly, our squirrels don't know one nut from another" 🤣🤣 That sign is AMAZING!!! Elk lake was like glass at the end - so pretty! Shame about the closed taco place but you guys did a stellar job with the DIY ones - loved the slow-mo falling lettuce! 🥗
The drive was so dang pretty, even smoke couldn’t ruin it! Hahaha isn’t that sign hilarious?! And Elk Lake was the perfect end to our time out west! 😍😍
Very cool. Thank you
Thank you!
Gorgeous scenery and thoughtful content, as always! Thank you so much for sharing the details of your adventures with us. I love that you show the map of where you are going, and the alltrails progress along the way. I have a dog as well (although my dog is over 100 pounds!) and I use your channel to get ideas for where I could potentially go on a trip and bring my dog along for hikes. Sometimes you do this, but if you could let us know roughly how crowded/empty the trails are when you are hiking (sometimes it is obvious - like with Rocky Mountain National Park!), and also what the temperature is during your hikes that would be so helpful. My dog struggles with the heat, and so a 5 mile hike in the 60s would be easy, whereas if it is in the 80s that might be a no-go for her. Checking the temperature for a location online doesn't typically give you the temperature that it actually is on a trail. You both seem very conscientious and detail-oriented, so I thought that perhaps you wouldn't mind slipping in some of these details from time to time :)
Also - as an aside - consider checking out the Gaia app for hikes as well... I have found it to be slightly more useful in terms of keeping me on-trail. It has an arrow to show the direction you are moving, not just a dot like in alltrails. What this means is that you know when you are off-trail within about 10 feet of walking off-trail. It saves a lot of wandering around, which is helpful when you are on a long hike and getting tired.
Hi Marie! Thanks for watching! We try to mention crowds as much as we can, but lately haven't as much, so we will try to include that. As for weather, it's hard to use our experience to guide you, as for example, we visited this area during a heat wave, so even days later it may be a lot cooler. Thanks for the tip on Gaia!
beautiful drive! i drove it back in 2007 and i tell ya being a flatlander from Texas, those sheer dropoffs on the switchbacks were a little scary 😲
The road is pretty intense!
I just discovered your channel, I really like it. I live in Idaho so some of the places you have visited are very familiar to me. I have been to NE, but it has been while. Looking forward to those videos.
Thank you so much for watching Dian!
I was just there two weeks ago. Stay at the National Forest Parkside Campground near Red Lodge. Stunningly beautiful. Luckily the smoke wasn't bad while I was there.
Jealous you got a low smoke day!
Fantastic video. Now I see what we missed last year when in Gardner. Next time I'm there... Bear Tooth here I come! First we are off to Kanab, UT in October to try my lottery luck at the Wave. My hopes are not high!
Thank you! And good luck on the wave permit! You could be one of the lucky ones! 🤞🏼
Wow ! So beautiful!
It’s such a stunning area!
I did the Pinedale/Yellowstone trip two years ago with my family in an RV. I had no idea we missed as much as we did. We are going back.
We drove the beartooth highway on Jul-7, there's lot of construction but no wild fire, so the view was amazing, got a few really good panorama.
That is awesome you beat the smoke!
The drone shots in this one 👌
Adam crushed it!
Thanks for sharing! Looking forward to seeing your exploration the the Great Lakes region.
I’m a follower from Michigan if you’d like any tips on what to see in THE Great Lakes state. Safe travels!
We are super excited to explore the area! Have a ton planned that we can't wait to share!
So excited to see that you're heading to the great lakes. As lifelong Michigander, I hope that the great lakes state will be on your itinerary. We've traveled all over the state (including the UP) and would be happy to give you any tips or site suggestions (not that you guys ever need help with that). Keep up the good work.
We’ll definitely be spending time in Michigan! Mostly the UP and northern Michigan, and have tons planned. Can’t wait!
@@AdventuresofAplusK awesome. The UP is my favorite and I have no doubt that it will be worth the drive. Safe travels.
Awesome views
😍😍
Yee-Haa!!! Absolutely breath taking, both physically (altitude) and visually. I don't think you missed much with that Taco shop, believe y'all dd a great job cooking them yourselves. Looked yummie to me. I own some property in a "ghost" place in Montana on highway 12. 320 acres never been there, grandma left it to us a few years ago. Sumatra i believe is the name of it.on old maps. Place is south of 12. If your in the area, free camping. Enjoyed !
Owning property out there sounds awesome! We are pretty far from Montana now, but that sounds like an epic boondocking spot!
I finally made it out to the Beartooth on my motorcycle last year (part of a 2 week ride to Glacier, Beartooth, Y-Stone and the Teton's). Rode it from east to west...looking forward to "next time".
It’s such an epic drive! 😍
Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Excellent! When you get to Maine's Acadia NP do the Jordan Cliffs hike it's very cool!
Thank you for the tip!
