What masterpiece of alternative rock this is
one of my favorite sonic youth songs off one of my favorite albums
Amazing song and album opener… those drums! Daydream Nation is amazing but for me Sister is my favourite album … as it’s a more concise and complete album, so stronger because of that. First heard it in 1989, just after hearing DN and was blown away buy them both. The track ‘Stereo Sanctity’ from Sister is my favourite track on it.
Got to see them play live in Dublin in September 1990, in a tiny venue called McGonagles. It was for the Goo tour! Hot,sweaty and intense. Almost a religious experience! It was such a highly anticipated gig (their first ever gig in Ireland) that Bono turned up in the audience!!
And to top it all, I picked up a bootleg cassette of the gig a week later… where I can be heard hollering out a song name half way through the gig! That song was ‘Starpower’ from Evol!! They didn’t play it!! Support band that night was a relatively new band at the time…Teenage Fanclub!! A year later SY returned to Cork and Dublin ….saw them in Dublin…slightly bigger venue this time. SUPPORT that night was a barely know American band called Nirvana!! Nevermind was released 3/4 weeks later … and the rest is history! God… great memories.
I was a baby when bands from that time were in their heyday, but I was fortunate enough to see a lot of them in the early 00s. The most fun time of my life. Hands down. Part of me wishes I had video of those times, but the other part of me is glad I didn't have a phone to distract me and take me out of the moment.
My favorite song from Sonic Youth
Napalm Death covers White Cross (from the album Sister) I love Sonic Youth and Napalm Death
This is without a doubt THE BEST Sonic Youth tune
I grew up in the 90s and didn’t have the privilege of being introduced to Sonic Youth in the 80s, sadly my first exposure to then was a DGC attempt at a “Best of” disc called “Screaming Fields of Sonic Love” that took songs from Confusion is Sex, Evil, Bad Moon, Sister, and Daydream Nation. I remember first realizing how different and special the music was when “Inhuman” hit the first time but Schizophrenia will always be my favorite track of theirs. 30 years of top tier music at the level they created is extremely hard to come by.
Great show guys, cheers!
sonic youth are the simon and garfunkle of guitar playing
I think Washing Machine, A Thousand Leaves, and Murray Street are also very, very good, in addition to the albums lauded in your video.
Washing Machine is my favourite, but only just over Daydream Nation. Murray Street was a lovely surprise when it came out (still love it).
Great song, great reaction. Love this album, but I agree with you, Daydream Nation is even better. Although, for me, Goo is their masterpiece. A really fantastic album. Love each song there.
I love early Sonic Youth. I was fortunate enough to see them live a couple times in the early 00s. Just great!!
Also, no worries about taking it back. I think that part of the song definitely elevates it 😌
Fantastic reaction fellas!!!! Thankyou!!
I've seen hundreds of performers. SY is way up there in my top 3!
Love this song! But always wished the vocals were a little bit more present.

I think "Washing Machine" and "NYC Ghosts & Flowers" are up there with their golden period.
