Is An Automatic Subaru BRZ Worth It?

- If you ask me, the Subaru BRZ is a car that definitely needs to be driven with a manual gearbox, so when Subaru confirmed they were sending me an automatic version I was a bit disappointed.
But then I got thinking, this could be a great chance for me to see whether an automatic gearbox is worthwhile in a car such as this. So that's exactly what this video is all about - is an automatic Subaru BRZ worth it?
Is this video I discuss both the pros and cons of having the 6-speed auto as opposed to the 6-speed manual.

Hi all, thanks for watching. Hopefully this video will be helpful to you if you're looking to buy a BRZ and you're stuck on the fence in regards to which gearbox you should go for.
If you plan on getting this car just know you will always be left wanting power. I will say though after doing a full exhaust on my car as well as doing a stage 2 plus tune with E85 it’s much more fun to rip around. If you live in a dense area and it’s your daily driver I’d say go auto but if you live in a area with low traffic and don’t drive a ton then go manual. I think both are equally fun in their own ways but manual will always be better because of the engagement you have with the car and for a brz that’s it’s best quality. Overall great first car, fun enough but also won’t get you into crazy trouble as well the fact that it has one of the best aftermarket supports out there. the one thing I do always struggle with in figuring out is which trans can hold the most power reliably. I’ve heard too many mixed reviews, but from what I gathered the later models like 2017+ the autos are actually pretty good in the low 300-350hp range but the torque is what ultimately can ruin it. While for the manual trans you’d have to upgrade the clutch as well as a few other things if you’d want to boost it, but I’m not entirely sure since I have not done it myself, but I hope this helps anyone considering buying this car !
I love the brz look but I don’t drive manual. Even if it goes faster in manual there are speed limits and I’m not racing every night . The automatic is still faster than most cars I have gad
That's fair enough Christian, not everyone will want the manual - thanks for watching.
It's worth for me. I live in Los Angeles where traffic never stops.
Hey Tj, thanks for watching, and thanks for commenting.
Try London, we're talking one way systems, narrow streets, traffic chopping from lane to lane, Black cabs throwing u-turns, Buses pulling out, motorbike couriers, mopeds doing the knowledge, pedestrians crossing and texting, tourists trying to kill themselves! Wanna see for yourself? Royal Jordanian on RUclips does daily rides through London on a m'bike, see if I ain't lying!
@@Loki1815
Challenge accepted . I will still drive manual and London is a trash city with a high crime rate
@@V_For_Vigilante Oh, so you know London well?
Yes, it’s totally worth it. Shifting in LA traffic is terrible and takes away from the driving experience.
I will definently look for an automatic when I'm about to buy one. Been driving manual cars for 15 years now and got tired of it. Been driving automatic for 2 years now (CVT) on subaru levorg and love it very much. Thank you for this video!
No worries, thanks for watching!
AT can be used manually either?
My first 86 I bought off Copart auction it was an automatic with myself being a very die hard manual guy I was really impressed by the way the transmission shifts its fast for a torque converter automatic. I kind of miss driving my 86, I’m itching to hunt for another one.
I would say that for a starting “sports” car for younger people on a budget, this is the perfect car.
You don’t have to worry about the car completely breaking the bank, you don’t have to worry about accidentally accelerating far too much just by touching the gas more than you should have, and in automatic it makes it a great daily driver year round; especially in city traffic and for the times you get to go out on the windy country roads.
Top speed in the Automatic I can confirm is 140-147. I love mine and haven't modified it in any way other than the window tint. Here in TN where I am from we have a ton of stop and go traffic as well as a huge tourist area that makes owning a manual a real pain or cramp in the left leg. So there is that and the fact that I don't try and see how fast I can get from point A to B this car shines on the back roads that are twisty and it handles like a car that would cost 3X the price. All in all it's an amazing car.
Here it is 2months later and I have done a full catback exhaust and a stage one tune on the car and it's just that much more fun now. It's not without it's headaches though. I now have to go home today put her back up on the jacks and find out where the hell this exhaust rattle is coming from. I don't even hear it 100% of the time but when I do I am usually within 3k-4500 RPM range. I suspect it's nothing more than a heat shield from the front pipe or the over pipe. I will find it today and fix it today! I am determined. Also claims that the Greddy Exhaust doesn't drone. Mine does as I have a 3" catback exhaust. I don't know if it's just the years perhaps something was made different but at 3k RMP on a hill climb it's pretty darn loud. Going to the beach so I might switch back to stock exhaust because honestly (The drone is that bad) we are used to it but not used to 6 hours of it.
What year is your brz??
Yes! There’s hope for people like me who know nothing about cars let alone a manual, but want ot be hip!
"Like me who know nothing about cars"
You know what a BRZ/GT86 is. You DO know somethings about cars!
I love my Automatic GT86.
What made you get it over the manual? That's not a dig by the way, I'm genuinely interested to hear your thoughts. Thanks for watching :)
It is more comfortable and the hands are always on the steering wheel. The automatic switches faster in manual mode than the first generation Volkswagen DSG.
I have the 2017 Toyota 86 automatic. I came out of the Vw gti . I do use my backseats , it's small but its there when you need it. Some of the reasons why I got the car was because it's non turbo, it's sexy as hell, low center gravity, it's almost 50 / 50 weight ratio, its sexy , the seats has good lower back support and it looks sexy as hell. I would not mind a little more torque and 230 hp would be Sweet ! And it such a sexy car ! The curves, the front, and the back ! Ok, let me stop .
Hey, mind me asking how you like the car automatic vs a manual (assuming your GTI was manual)?
I'm currently looking to buy a BRZ/86, but I'm completely unsure whether I should go manual or automatic with it.
Alucard Depends on what you’re going to be using the car for;
Get auto if;
- The car will be your daily driver
- You frequently drive through city/urban traffic
- You want good gas mileage
- You like to relax more than drive like Don in F&F when you drive
- You’re a younger driver (with autos being more tame, you won’t regret it)
Get manual if;
- You want to use the car primarily for fun drives
- You’ll be taking the car out on the track once in awhile
- You’re a more experienced driver
- You can afford the little extra gas mileage
- You want to have a fully immersive, skill-based driving experience while you’re on windy/racing roads
I just bought a brz 2018 limitied A6. I dont regret getting it because its my daily driving car and I lived in the city. Sure having it in manual brings out the best of it, but if you’re the person prefers to drive an relax at the same time (especially in highway traffic), I would pick auto than Manual.
Awtz27 Gamer Fully agree with this! Daily driving, especially in city traffic, is much better with an automatic! And those savings on fuel will be much worth it even after spending the extra on an auto.
Nice review! Looking for automatic like this...
Put 4.88 diff gears in it. It needs it badly. It will wake it up and make it alot more responsive and alot more fun. It is the best mod for the i promise you that. Its a must
I think if use it for day to day commute to a workplace in the city, auto is definitely worth to consider
Yeah, it's definitely more convenient, although I'd still stick with the manual, despite living in London LOL. Thanks for watching.
when you review cars in the morning and kill someone in the afternoon... nice review mate
I strongly advise against making jokes like that. I have space in my boot for one more body, and I know where you live. 😐......😂Thanks for watching 👍
hahaha good one. anyways can you do a review side by side brz auto and manual if you can.
I would love to accommodate that, but trying to get my hands on one model let alone two is tricky.
Manual is good for drive in traffic or even go to a track but if you also enjoy drift manual is the choice
Even though I will still take a Manual over an Automatic (Coming from an american), there is still places that we have bad traffic In urban environments and some people do not want to deal or worry about burning the clutch quickly. If there was no Manual's BRZ/GT86's around then I pick a Automatic.
Can't destroy the fun of this bigger miata!
Yes, I'm calling this car the *BIG* Miata from now on.
Nice impressions I was wondering how the Automatic would be.
automatic will complement boost better then the manual in the long run and can handle higher hp then the manual. the manual is great NA under tuning or factory tune even low boost but the shorter gearing makes it kinda meh for forced induction. best at that point to swap trans and clutch as well to go higher boost. after that your fa20 is your downfall. your conrods will be your ticking time bomb. either way for those who are looking for the auto it is decently fast at shifting sure its a second slower (thats because of the taller gear ratios and weight aswell) but it is no means bad. if you have an auto it also does have serious upgrades for torque converter and valve bodies :) just know when you buy an frs/brz/86 dont expect power out of it if you want the car and dont mind the power want to get the most out of it in NA form go for the manual! if you want to boost it honestly the stock auto does well just dont expect your engine to hold up past 350hp anything beyond and your playing Russian roulette
Hi Paul, thanks for watching and thanks for commenting.
I’ve test drove the auto and manual. I would go for the auto because changing the clutch on the manual is a lot of work and paying a shop to do it will cost thousands.
Thousands?
Car Obsession Yeah. My friend has a Subaru BRZ and he had to buy a new clutch and the shop quoted him $950 to get it replaced.
@@ayeits_jp I don't mean to sound arsey, but that's hardly thousands LOL
@@CarObsession I reckon thats a good deal. XD
Exactly how fast is the paddle shifting speed? Torn between an auto BRZ or a GTI with DSG.
It's not bad - it's just enough to feel sporty but I imagine the GTi with a DSG would be noticeably better (I've not driven a GTi with a DSG, only a manual). I would recommend trying out both (BRZ and GTi I mean, not manual GTi and DSG GTi). In all honesty, I'd rather have the Golf, but I'm a hot hatch fan, so I'm a bit biased. Thanks for watching.
@@CarObsession just wondering.. You can only use the paddle when in manual mode? Not the gearbox itself for example an auto Acura rsx or tsx sport shift?
IanSucks I own an automatic 86, and I use the paddle shifters at anytime I want to. I use the paddles especially to downshift when slowing down the car. You do not have to put the transmission stick in manual mode. You can be in Drive and still use the paddles to change gears.
@@iliyaradu9195 I know but I WANT to use the manual gear mode lol. I wanna feel like a wannabee stick driver. Lol
Question, if you use the manual mode on the gear stick, do you have to shift down and or can you put it back to Drive as you want to slow down, and switch to manual WHILE STILL DRIVING, or do you need to stop to switch to manual and drive
Not sure if I'm making sense so, let me know if I can elaborate better
IanSucks you can probably do that. Although I’m not absolutely positively sure if you can bc I don’t use the stick to change gears but rather the paddles. I should probably try it out sometimes!
If it does 38 mpg at a cruise then go for an m140i. It will do 40mpg and the zf auto is about as good as it gets for a proper auto.
From 2021 on in Slovenia the car tax for a new BRZ is 750€ for 164g CO2 and 1336€ for 180g CO2.
Blimey!
I have an 2015 auto.
The wife wanted one for years but there never was an Auto (the wife don't do manual). Now I'm going to have to shell out for one.
They've always made them in both manual and auto.
So is it worth it or nah ? Cause in my country there is more brz’s in automatic gearbox for sale
Hi there, thanks for watching. I'd personally go for the manual.
Nice review but I was looking for your review on the rev matching the gearbox does everytime it downshifts.
The re matching worked fine, I'm yet to use an auto that doesn't do the job properly, so that's why I didn't really mention it. Thanks for watching.
@@CarObsession Great. Keep up the good reviews mate
@@kakitek Cheers pal!
It’s automatic for me personally. Heavy Traffic and I don’t know how to drive stick. Plus people in the US tailgate and drive like mad. Not an environment where I’d want to drive a Stickshift car in.
Learn manual, not that hard. That shouldn't be a reason tbh
@@philspaghet Yeah but people seem to be on a serious ass IDGAF phase right now lol. To be honest though I keep craving for a manual transmission car in general. Question is if I should go for a FR-S/BRZ or Miata, or learn with a Civic Si.
@@gtmike916 I've driven the 86 and ND Miata, they're both very easy cars to drive manual in and I feel like the Civic Si will have a lighter clutch just because it's a Civic. Honestly, with covid and all rn, I wouldn't be worried about traffic, just dive into it and you'll get used to it. Try renting a manual car for a week from a rental company and get used to driving it everyday
@@philspaghet Thank you very much. I’ll definitely buy a Miata or 86/BRZ
@@gtmike916 I highly recommend a manual in either one! I drove the 86 and with an auto it felt like a corolla, not very inspiring, but the manual instantly felt 2x more fun IMO. Definitely worth the investment to learn manual! And good luck with your search!
In America I’ve seen the 0-60 in 6.8 and 7.9 for auto
Can you still be a car guy if you get the automatic brz?
Ooh, good question. I'd argue no, HOWEVER, there are some people that simply can't drive a manual. Thanks for watching.
Car Obsession that’s ok thanks
Of course you can. If you're here and if you're planning to buy a BRZ then you're a car guy. As long as you're taking pleasure to drive in fact, no matter what car or what gearbox. I do the heel-toe and honestly sometimes i wish i just can keep my hands on the steering wheel and physically feel the car 100% of the time.
Eric D ok thank you so much for this advice 👍
@@just_cars_with_xavier
I like manual more but damn if u ask questions like this then ur insecure af
So the automatic can change into manual?
Yes it can, to a degree. Thanks for watching.
@@CarObsession Can you drift with it?
@@VELOPEMUSIC I personally don't know, I'm sure someone talented enough can!
If you are going to buy a car that isn’t too fast or highly powered why choose automatic? lack or power plus lack of fun then what are you bargaining for?? A daily driver??
Some people will opt for an automatic as they cannot drive a manual or perhaps they want an auto as they live in a city or a place with lots of traffic. Thanks for watching.
Funny you say the top speed is 130mph in the auto cause there’s video of 159mph limiter
Can I ask you if you can also actually use the stick to shift gears too excluding the paddles?
Hi there, thanks for watching. No, you cannot use the stick to change gear, just the paddles.
@@CarObsession lame
The scion frs can apparently.. Which is pretty much a brz...toyota86.. I guess the brz can only use paddles..
RUclips 2015 Scion frs by autobytel or something.. The thumbnail will be a red frs which you can up or down shift or paddle..
I just found paddle corny.. But I can't drive shift lol. But the lightness of this car and looks makes me interested regardless.. Even if it's slow, it's not like I'm going to race.
Hi IanSucks, I could well be wrong as it's been quite some time since I drove the car so I'm going from memory. Plus I've never driven an automatic where you can change gear using the paddles AND the actual gear lever itself - it's usually one or the other. If you can use both, I'd say that's a bit pointless - kinda like wear a belt and braces.
@@CarObsession true it is a bit pointless. I guess just preference of the feel when people who can't drive manual want to pretend like they are.
I'd personally would like to mess around with the paddle too just to see what it's like.. Sometimes driving an auto gets boring. I could try to find someone to help me learn manual but man, I'd imagine it can be difficult and tiring at times. Especially from what I've been told
autos top speed is actually 140 aswell. i own aauto brz
I got the auto hakone edition because they didnt have a manual on the lot.
Hi Jerry, thanks for watching, and thanks for commenting. Do you not regret waiting for a manual?
@@CarObsession yes and no, I've had 2 86s before this one both manual, they we're super fun to drive, this auto isn't bad, the shifts in manual mode are super fast. i kinda do think i should have waited for the manual, but there's no point in me complaining now!! Thank you for taking your time to reply to my comment.
Ha! That's why I'm watching this. Love the Hakone but every dealer near me only has an auto. So what's the low down? Happy with it?
@@Mookaton If i could to do it again i would wait. But I am happy, don't get me wrong. I've experienced the manual in this car before thats why it doesn't kill me that bad that i dont have it. The auto is super nice, shifts are fast, ive got the trd exhaust, when you're on it and shifting manually you can hear how fast it shifts. Not bad for an auto. This hakone editon is the shit tho man, I've gotten alot of compliments on the car, most people don't even know what it is. The hakone green is gorgeous. I love everthing about this car, even the little 86 engraved leather cases you get for your key fob and owners manual.
@@Mookaton another thing, the 6 speed manual is faster (at least it feels like it). But with the manual you're still gonna lose to pretty much anything even a mini van. I lost a street race to a fat guy on a harley and that was in my manual 86, i shifted the fastest i could too . You'll have fun in either tho man, Iam gonna upload a video of me playing around in a parking lot so you can see for yourself.
Sometimes, you can get real fed up of not having anything to do with your left leg/foot!
Manual forever, I live in New York City and I have an automatic Nissan kicks and my Honda Civic manual, is way funnier than automatic but I use the automatic to drive chill hahaha
Hi Elio, thanks for watching, and thanks for commenting.
Any reason why car you tubers hate on the CVT transmission ??
It's not just car RUclipsrs that hate them mate, they're just not the most fantastic transmission. They're noisy and you get that dreaded rubber band effect. I'm yet to use a CVT that I have actually enjoyed. Thanks for watching.
CVT isnt the worst thing in the wrold, but even the reliable ones are kind of sketchy. They just arent up to par in terms of performance and reliablilty yet. For example my dads sentra has a CVT. Its smooth as butter, but wow does it feel gutless. And hes also had issues with the trans overheating. Thats 1 example but i have read its a common thing. There is just something a CVT is missing. If i was to get a trans that didnt shift, I may as well get an electric car. CVT either are going to have to get WAY better before they are picked over regular trans, or they are just going to get phased out unfortunately.
Nice video, will buy a manual BRZ soon
in manual mode will it shift by itself or will you have full control?
Hiya stormthing22, thanks for watching. It's been so long since I drove the car, that I simply do not remember. I want to say that it does change up by itself as from experience a lot of modern autos do, but I cannot be certain.
@@CarObsession It never upshifts by itself in manual mode, it'll only downshift as your revs drop
@@adamb8552 Hi Mister B, thanks for watching. The car I tested did change up by itself in manual mode.
Car Obsession it will if you temporarily shift to manual mode by hitting the paddles in drive, but if you have the stick in manual it won’t. You can hit the rev limiter all day long.
Mister B this is true, like if you’re going 60 you’ll be in 6th gear when switching to manual but if you switch to manual on say 3rd gear, it will not automatically upshift for you when pressing on the gas until you use the paddles or switch back to drive
It’s worth it when there’s a lot of traffic in your state or country
Hello Rafael, thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment.

AT can be used manually either?
Yes, it can be. Thanks for watching.
And it can be done from both paddle shift and gear knob, right?
@@hyperloop7053 From memory, yes.
Here why i didnt buy this car. Everything cool and the same every year. The interiors looks cheap and old. It doesnt change at all. Which why i wouldnt recommend ppl to buy this car
Hi Kevin, thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment.
auto 0-60 is around 6 seconds with laugh control and the manuals is around 7.2 seconds. If you do a little research the 0-60 for the automatic's wasn't tested correctly and is simply wrong.
Hi there, thanks for watching and thanks for watching; I was simply going by the spec sheet given to me by Subaru so I shouldn't really need to research it if that is the time given to me direct from the manufacturer.
@@CarObsession I wasn't putting any negativity your way, just stating fact's. It's annoying how they down sell the auto when in my personal opinion it's one of the best transmission's put in a budget sport's car. It doesn't require high maintenance and shift's fairly well when you do the pedal dance to turn off all driver aid's and has a decent 0-60 when required.
I love the upshifts. But the downshifts are a bit sluggish.
Brz is made to be manual. Getting my pearl white manual brz soon
Good to hear buddy, thanks for watching!
God damn pearl white is sexy I've seen it on a brz/86/frs.. I kinda want matte black to be low key...
I think automatic kind of defeats the purpose of this car. I live in LA traffic and still worth
Yeah, I can see where you're coming from. Thanks for watching, Nicholas.
Personally, if I wanted an automatic, I would never buy a 86/BRZ, it seems like such a waste. If I had to drive day to day I'd just not get a sports car in the first place tbh
That's a fair point, and to be honest, that's pretty much how I would approach it - thanks for watching.
..Why wouldn't it be worth it?
Because it's more money, and I believe a sports car like this is more desirable with the manual gearbox. I can't imagine many buyers opting to go for the automatic option as opposed to the manual for this car. Thanks for watching.
