Every time you guys commented on how much you loved Wash and Book during the show, we were all wincing at our screens, knowing what was eventually coming down the road.
People aren't just one thing. Book wasn't always a shepherd - he has a past - but he became a shepherd. People have been known to change careers, to change jobs, to give up onecthing to become a different thing. For example lawyers my give up their law practice to go into politics - or go into journalism, or whatever.

They wanted to keep the door open for more firefly movies, but Alan Tudyk and Ron Glass could not commit, so thats their fate, rather than just having them disappear between installations. The timing of Wash is pretty smart, as it makes the whole audience fear that noone is safe in the final act.
It's fair that they couldn't commit, but to kill them puts an end to any kind of future story they might have had, even if only in written form in comics or books. The movie also makes it so that any stories written to take place inbetween the show and the movie have to eventually lead up to the events in the movie, for better or worse (definitely worse). Nevermind the retcons the movie has. I much prefer to pretend the movie never happened and just imagine a continuation of the show instead.
When Joss Whedon planned this movie he intended it to be a 3 movies trilogy much like the Star War movies. He got all the actors to sign 3 movie contracts, except for Wash and Book. They could be in the first movie but each of them had committed to other projects so Joss decided the only way to explain their missing movies 2 and 3 was to have them die in this movie. Also he planned on Zoe being in the early stages of pregnancy in this movie and become a mother in movie 2. Imagine Mal, Simon and Jayne being substitute fathers to a young one.
The two saddest movie quotes to me are “I’m Mary Poppins y’all” and “I am a leaf on the wind, watch how I soar.” I started a new job in 2014 in California (at the time, the farthest west any of my family lived was Birmingham). One of my coworkers had a license plate run with Wash’s quote so she and I bonded over our love of Firefly and Wash.
Hannah is so well-spoken, she could convince me to buy a JUICER! Maybe she's talked her way into another PhD since this was recorded. Thank you for re-uploading!!! I was so sad and angry about killing Wash. Firefly is such a tragedy. Just a bad luck cancellation that couldn't be undone because people's lives had moved on. We were very lucky the fans protested enough to get the DVDs released, and then even luckier those sold well enough to get this movie made. It's sad and it ends too soon, but we're SO lucky to have what we have. No one can take Firefly from us!!!
Notice how it's Jayne, who's probably the toughest in the bunch that tells them to shut off the video of the Reavers because he can't stomach it. That's the brutality of them.
Losing Book was almost expected, something to raise the stakes, but Wash's death was honestly a master stroke...it made the end of the movie SO much more intense. If Wash could die then everyone was at risk. It was brutal in the moment but years later, after dealing with the emotional damage, I have to admit it was masterful storytelling.
Joss Wedon was planning on having Inara die in season 2 or 3. But he doesn't always get what he wants, and her disease was cured in one of the Firefly novels.
Book is suggested to have been a government agent of higher rank and he couldn’t tolerate what he was told to do anymore and chose to become a shepherd.
The guy who played Walsh signed a fan picture that said I'm a leaf on the wind. And the lady who got it just started crying and said Why would you write that?!? He started apologizing and wrote something else on another picture 😂
I believe the reason for Book and Wash's death was because they were not able to commit to any future episodes while not knowing IF the show could have been rebooted. Another big problem was that the movie had so many "pre-screenings" prior to its main release that the "die-hard" fans had already seen it so many times, it didn't do so well once it was widely released.
Sorta. Its because the actors refused to do any sequels. Wheadon had actually planned to do an entire trilogy, but the movie bombed outside the hardcore fans and the project was killed after Marvel asked Wheadon to do Avengers.

There are reasons for that such as poor marketing and a marginal audience as well as piss-poor executives with stupid timing slots on the series and absolutely no idea how modern audiences view TV and film. They still use the Neilson Box to gather figures when most of the intended demographic stream or record digitally what they watch. Sorry, sounds like a rant but it's only against media companies 😔

The movie is great for browncoat fans. However, because the box office performance was poor, it kinda lowered the chance of a reboot.
