  • Everyone who puts to sea as a lone boat when dinghy fishing should have a source of auxiliary power. The big question, how big or more to the point how small an engine should you carry as a viable spare. Here the 4 hp Suzuki DF4 is put through its paces on the back of a Warrior 170.

Thanks for the video! I'm trying to size a kicker for my Arima 16', and this was very helpful. I think I'll go with the DF6. Should be plenty sufficient and not much more money.

One issue of discussion is whether or not to bother with keeping a separate fuel supply--not likely perhaps but if you ever have contaminated fuel bring your main down, you might appreciate the auxiliary engine having it's own, clean fuel at the ready. Secondly, even if the motor is BRAND NEW, it can (it happened to me) you can lose that engine at the worst possible time. For that reason--forget the kicker, have your anchor ready to deploy NOW. Also, even if you HAVE a towing service, that will not help you at the moment that main engine goes down. An anchor that is stowed properly and ready at a moments notice, is a GREAT idea--and to have a kicker BEATS calling for a tow. Think about it.

Pom must be the uncoolest people on the planet, lol. Watching him steering without watching where he's going was hilarious 😂 it's very easy to link the 2 engines engines together with a rod and a couple of helm joints so you can steer from the front!

    Peter Gore Seer,
Why Huge Engines, I Had A 40hp, It Took Me All Over Morecome Bay, I Put Redex In Petrol, Engines Wear , The Major Problem Is The RNLI, They Run A Mile To Attend A Milion Pound Boat Or Professional, But A Day Fisher , We Are There Pain, They Are To Busy Running Around With Charity Boxes.

I have a striped down 17' Whaler haul (16'-9" I think) ... in your opinion would a new 9.9 Merc. be sufficient enough to push the boat around ??? ...I would fish from pole to pole on the Chesapeake Bay bridge MD , put in at Sandy Point , the Chesapeake is 4 miles wide there ... my target times would be when the tide is moving at full speed ... what do you think , is a 9.9 hp enough to work the poles , boat 850lb., persons 400lb , gear -motor - fuel 250LB. ... I'll save this vid and check back to see if you've replied ... thanks ... ps., this 17' boat is my last , in my life I've owned 7 other boats , I want to slowly and peacefully fish from this one until the end ... thanks in advance ...
pss., that boat being towed at the end of your vid. reminds me of a Boston Whaler Minempsha I once owned ...

i have a df4 ,,the only differeance to a 5hp is the rev limiter ,,go on youtube ,to see how to remove it ..i am doing mine ,,the engine is the same for a 6 hp ,but you have to change some parts manifold etc ..you can only do this on certain ones ,,mines a 2 stroke ,,and yes the external tank can be hooked up ,,so remove the limiter ..and maybe put on a 6 hp prop

I just bought an older DF6 a 4 Stroke, and so far it looks like the 4 and 5 hp don't have a direct line. But, even though they only hold 1 ltr, they use so little, it would not be hard to just fill it up again when needed. It would probably run fine on 2 stroke fuel anyway if you ran out of straight fuel.
