    More about Gianmarco:
    Gianmarco Soresi is a stand-up comedian, actor, and a little too much for some people. He’s told jokes on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Comedy Central, Netflix’s Bonding, Don’t Tell, The Real Housewives of New York for some reason, and he was a JFL New Face in 2022. He’s acted in Billy Crystal’s Here Today, Hustlers, The Last OG, and in his theater days shared the stage with some people who’ve gone on to become huge real estate agents. You can see him post the kind of crowdwork clips that are arguably destroying the artform of stand-up comedy everywhere @gianmarcosoresi and he obviously has a podcast called The Downside with Gianmarco Soresi.🎤

    People have such a warped idea of what "tough love" means, that guy was literally just making it worse.
    Shut-ins have heavy mental health issues and just being a jerk and mocking them won't help. I'm depressed but not a shut-in, I can't imagine how bad I would be if my parents were "get a life" "won't get out, loser?" instead of "are you going to get out with your friends this weekend? Please go ask them to make them want to do something too" "oh you started playing rpg again? I'm so glad, you weren't enjoying any hobby for a time" "you haven't talked about writing for a time now, try getting back even if you think the ideas are bad"
    Like, they really care for me and they SHOW IT instead of only telling me, it's pretty hard to believe someone loves you when they are attacking you at your lowest.

    • @noxteryn
      @noxteryn 2 месяца назад +77

      Exactly. Tough love means not enabling the harmful behaviour out of niceness. Like, when someone is trying to quit drinking, not giving them a drink is tough love. Tough love is not an excuse to abuse a person "for their own good".
      In fact, there were a series of studies in the 1980s and 1990s that thoroughly debunked this idea of berating people under the pretence of tough love, and showed that it was utterly ineffective, if not actively harmful. So, whenever you see people saying things like "we have to shame obese people so that they get off their asses and lose weight", know that their opinions are scientifically incorrect. People need support to help themselves. You can't berate someone into bettering themselves.
      And here's the most important part: Even if you somehow succeed, and the person does introduce positive changes in their life because you yelled at them, in doing so you have created a new problem. A person must change from within, not out of shame. If a person changes because of your yelling, then that yelling became their motivator, and so they will continue to need a drill-instructor hovering above their head to do anything else in the future. (They could also develop resentment for their past self, which could contribute to lowered self-worth. You can't call someone a loser for years without it affecting them in some way.)
      This is precisely why therapists refuse to outright tell you what to do, because if they do, then you will become dependent on them to do anything.

      It definitely reminds me of how I was a very shy, introverted child (still those things now lol), and seeing extended family was a major source of anxiety for me. So them teasing me for it when I did see them did NOT help. In fact, it made me want to see them *less* to avoid the possibility of them doing that to me.

    Gianmarco doesn't realize how many Amber Alerts exist because a parent kidnaps their child. Most of the time it's when a parent has lost their custody rights or has very strict custody limits, so them having the child in their care is legally considered kidnapping if they take them outside of legal parameters.

      Googled it cause that's what I initially thought too. It's more or less a broader term for unique families of step-parents and/or step-kids.

      @@alisonfields4688 Clearly most people aren't aware of the 'correct' meaning, that being a family with children from multiple different partners. You can say whatever you want and claim you mean anything you want, but if people don't understand what you're saying, it doesn't matter what the words actually 'mean'. He's doing the same thing in the clip, taking 'blended' family and equating it to a messed up family. FFS.

      @@jbc5099I'm surprised it's not common knowledge to native English speakers what blended family means in terms of two divorced parents (or widow(er)s) with kids from their previous marriages blending into one new family unit to be raised together. Like Brady Bunch Style.
