UK here, and without sugarcoating it: childhood circumcision infuriates me. The notion of taking a part of someone's body, their genitals no less, without free consent, while they're too young to even advocate for themselves, feels like one of the greatest evils I can imagine. When I ask American friends how they feel about their circumcision, responses range from not being hugely bothered because it's all they've ever known, to seething, burning anger and resentment towards their own parents and country for letting that happen and deep personal shame, but I think tellingly, never once have I spoken to someone who was pleased or positive about it. Seems like even in western countries where it was recently common custom, the current generations of adults won't be carrying it forward. Be curious to see if modern generations reaching adulthood in africa has the same effect.
Thanks for the vid Afrikleo, super interesting channel!

that's a very interesting perspective @erinsteph. i've always wondered what's the big deal about circumcision, is it just a tradition because in many cases it not even about its health benefits and the more we keep on asking these questions and not getting answered the sooner it will stop being carried forward.

@@Afrikleo Indeed. My anger purely comes from the lack of consent, people should absolutely be free to choose to adhere to tradition or treat a medical condition, but I believe strongly the freedom to decline should also be respected without negative consequences. The more we question it, the more we encourage people think critically about it, the more likely they are to think with compassion as well as pride in tradition, and both can exist together. Thanks again, appreciate your work!

This is a wonderful tradition. Circumcision has benefits for health,, hygiene and morals. Doing it in this way also helps boys develop strength and bravery by confronting fear and pain.

but should it be forced to every boy or should they be given the freedom to make the choice of whether they want it or not, because most of them don't usually have a choice in the matter

@@Afrikleo I think it should be forced. If it's optional, many will be cowardly and choose not to be cut. If it's compulsory, all must be brave and endure it.
