One thing about Carol Channing, she is the furthest thing from dull or boring. You just cannot take your eyes off her while she is on stage. She steals scenes by opening her big luminescent eyes, smiling that teethy grin, and then there is that unique raspy voice. She can't help herself. Behind all that, there is that incredible comedic sense and timing. On stage she was an experience.
She has such incredible charisma and presence, and she is also so generous with the spotlight. Whenever she performed with anyone, you can she was gracious with her performances, never to overshadow her co-performers.
I am so glad there is a film that captures the magic of Carol. In time, her stage presence will be forgotten. I was lucky enough to work with her on a project years ago. I hired her for a print ad for American Express. She WAS Carol Channing from the moment she walked into the studio. She wore a full-length red vinyl coat and handed out faux-diamond rings to everyone. Larger than life. A true delight.
One of the most underrated movie musical EVER! Everyone, music, story - just great & this outstanding GEM by Carol Channing! Thank you You Tube for carrying this!
I saw this for the first time at 6 years old after watching it just went to bathroom mirror impersonating her singing the line “ Jazz Baby”. That was my memory 51 years ago !!! Seeing this second time in my lifetime just couldn’t believe how I remember the song. A few Years ago at my job In Beverly Hills was lucky enough to see her shopping for a cocktail dress trying on a Naeem Khan and she looked glamorously amazing in it! All these years since I was 6 never thought to see her in person but it happened! I was 🤩 starstruck !!!
@Hwilki: Unfortunately her voice and presence come s as cross as a cartoon. Perhaps if there was a scene where he voice sounded more natural than she wouldn’t have been crossed off the list to play ‘Dolly Levi (born Gallagher)’. Still they were older and better actresses than Streisand.
This film was basically her screen test for the Dolly film. After they saw how larger-than-life her persona looked on film and on a huge silver screen they realized she was too much for an audience to endure for over 2 hours so off the consideration list her name went. Heck, at least she earned an Oscar nomination for THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE for her 20 minute screen appearance.
I watched this for the first time a couple days ago. Husband loves the Broadway show, but never saw movie. The movie was good, but Carol Channing was mesmerizing. As much as I know her, this performance was a revelation to me, and made me angry, even more so, that she was snubbed for Hello, Dolly. She is magnificent on film. Some times great stage performers don’t translate to film (which is what I always assumed was reason for her not getting Hello, Dolly movie) but Carol does! She looks, sounds and performs amazing!
Love Barbra but Carol was Dolly and the studio was so stupid not to cast her. This number shows how brilliant she was. She was the complete package, actress, singer, dancer, incredible comedienne.
@@roxyshow123 : Hello Dolly was a flop only because of its $25 million production cost, which was incredibly expensive for its time. It still made $26 million, which was an impressive box office for 1969.
1967, pretending to be 1927. The clothes in the film set off a short 1920's fashion fad in early 1968. I still have my mother's department store 1920s-style dress.
That Carol did not get cast in the film version of Hello Dolly -a role she created on stage- just two years after this smashing performance remains a frustrating missed opportunity. The film version of Hello Dolly is totally missing the sparkle that only Carol Channing could give.
Was lucky enough to see Carol play Dolly in London's Drury Lane theatre in 1979 (with Eddie Bracken ) .She sure was in a class of her own . She "owned" every frame she was in .
She won the Golden Globe Award and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Muzzy in Thoroughly Modern Millie. Unfortunately, she did not win the Oscar.
I first saw Millie in 1970 on a vacation with my family. We loved it, including this extraordinary number. Having said that, the Dolly producers were absolutely right - two hours of Channing would’ve been way over the top. It’s an old story that Streisand was too young - she herself knew it - but she’s the only reason it’s watchable today. She sang it better than anyone could possibly have done, and the age doesn’t really matter. She carried herself older, and made Dolly a three-dimensional character. At any rate, Carol certainly added the pizzazz to Millie, although Julie & Mary were no slouches either.
Ironically, this lost Carol Channing the movie role of Dolly. She was actually the front-runner until the producers saw this movie and felt she was just too shall we say unique to headline the mega-million dollar extravaganza that "Hello, Dolly!" was planned to be. At least Carol got an Oscar nomination (which cynics may say was what game shows used to call a consolation prize) out of this.
And then they made the big mistake of casting Streisand, who was too young, and Walter Matthau, who was too old. Channing would have been hilarious in the role and might have saved the movie.
If that's all you want to see, then that's all you'll ever see everywhere and in everything. You see what you want to see. Shame you missed what the rest of us saw - joy, talent, an excellent performance, fun.....
@@laerwen Unfortunately, it will. This was a popular play with high schools and dinner theaters, but was pulled from the market and retooled for modern audiences. If you see it (I did, at a thrift store over the weekend), buy it. It is unlikely to be shown on TV or available to stream. It will be a SAD day when Julie Andrews leaves us.

It is wonderful! Except for the racism.
A genuine triple threat - someone who can sing dance and act - and knock your socks off doing it ...WOW what a talent
Her dress is gorgeous!!

Really, this song showcases Carol perfectly😊
So joyful and exuberant, it’s a shame her version of Dolly Levi was never captured in a feature film capacity because she’s totally captivating here.

I loved Barbra’s vocals but Carol just has this sparkling charm to her that is perfect for Dolly.
Carol was both Black and of Jewish ancestry! A true American showbiz gem.
She’s definitely Jewish, but she’s only 25% black. Nonetheless definitely a talent that’s for sure
Carol Channing earned an OSCAR nomination
for Thoroughly Modern Millie in the category of Best Supporting Actress. Wish that she had won.

Barbra was more popular to the demographic they wanted to attract.
@@themermaidstale5008 Hello Dolly! Was a flop. People found Barbra too young for the role.

Just gotta love her ❤
the dress is still wearable even for today, 2023

@@storykeeper8684 It's pretending to be 1922, according to the movie's theme song, but I agree the dress looks more late 1920s than early.
"That walk-the-dog and ball-the-jack that caused all the talk, is just a copy of the way I naturally walk!"
I repeat I don’t think anyone’s gonna be able to copy the way she hit that scene

A wonderful film!
What a delightful lady!
Awesome...we 'll never forget this incredible performance..thank u carol
DELIGHTFUL!
The advertising "jingle" for Wheaties & "Jack Armstrong, the All American Boy"!!
Carol Channing! She kills it in this scene. How wonderful😊

She had the perfect flapper figure. ❤️
This was incredible!

Incrível e completa estrela americana. INESQUECÍVEL EM TODOS MOMENTOS.
Well that´s stuck in a time long gone. Comedy has changed a lot.
Not really. Still funny today.
Raspberries😂
She said the highest honor of her career was being on Nixon's "Enemies List". What a lady!
Her performance here and Beatrice Lillie performing her signature clog dance at the start are about all I remember from this goofy flick.
You are a Jazz baby alright!!
Genetically speaking😅
I just learned this after reading her autobiography. I mean, she has soul so I’m not surprised. She is a gem. 💎 ❤

It last ran in 2004 on Broadway and closed after over 900 performances, so I'm not sure your assertion holds up...

Cinderella is better narrative of transforming and urchin into princess than George Berndshaws ' Pigmallion' misogynistic one
This movie was a mess but Carol was great in it.
