R.I.P. Onefinity CNC - Troubleshooting my $3000 paperweight

  • In this video I go through the steps Onefinity sent me to diagnose why my controller just stopped working out of the blue. I was a slightly annoyed by this because it was still under warranty, and if you didn't grow up in the 80's and 90's taking apart and building your own computers and electronics this could be a daunting task. I figured while I was opening it up, I would show you what I did and how I ultimately fixed the machine.

Title reads RIP but then it gets fixed successfully and everything is fine... so the title is super accurate. Plus, what happened here is literally the definition of ‘right to repair’ and still the customer is unhappy. The fact that end users are even able to repair this unit is amazing.

I had this same problem. They asked me to tear it apart to diagnose as well as send pictures and video. While they were nice, I decided to to just buy a replacement and exchange. 500 bucks. @@CTEwithMrB It's a hobbyist machine, sold at a hobbyist price point; no one should expect commercial-grade customer service. Machines like that have a nation-wide dealer and service network and they will send someone out to your business, but they cost several times the price and may even charge a yearly maintenance fee. If you "do not want a hobby" then don't buy a Onefinity IMO. Buy a Laguna or similar. As for "lighting $100 bills on fire", the Onefinity warranty clearly says that commercial use renders the warranty null and void; they were under no obligation to assist you at all. Personally, I'd never base a business on a machine like this.

You are missing the culture you have bought into: machines like this were designed by builder-users, for folks a little further down the tech tree, to make CNC tools accessible. For some, this is enough. For others, it is a gateway. Regardless, the attitude of the builder/users is very much DIY, with the presumption that YOU will be coming to your own rescue. Which you could have. With some offered help. Which you declined.

I figured out that dust was getting in between the contacts of the switch so no connection was being made. Your E-Stop may not actually be bad, you may actually just have had a loose connection there. Have you put it back together the way you have received it and seen if it started to work. Also like the previous comment checking for continuity is the easiest thing to do. I bet you can duplicate the problem now that you have removed and reinstalled the wires.

I'm not against their method of self-service but I do hope they sent a replacement breaker. I have no experience with CNCs but I am quite familiar with electronics. And they had 2 breakers for some reasons. One would be for fault tolerance, so if one failed the other would pick up without skipping a beat. Obviously that's not the case. The other would be with rating of the switch. Their may be some derating involved so even if the breaker reads as good enough, the continual operation will very likely result in a shorter life of the component. May want to see about them sending out a replacement breaker before the warranty expires.
Worse case if they refuse which is a bad look for their company buy ur own replacement.

How long ago did your warranty end before you contacted Onefinity?

Those were good questions- a month seems like enough time to contemplate an answer...

@@mavigogun The better question was why the quality control wasn't on top of things for me to have missing parts. Also need to mention I spoke with the owner of the company and he was a total ass with attitude. I'm sure if I posted the email conversations back and forth you'd see how crappy he presented himself and his company. I get it you guys are fan boys but this really wasn't what I expected after seeing so many positive things on the FB. Maybe I got him on a bad day or something but he was an ass.

@@brucewatson1317 Check yourself, dude- we're just trying to qualify statements made by a stranger online. I can't speak for anybody else, but I have no affiliation with the folks at OF; my interest here is purely to learn. If you have more to offer beyond the strength of your feelings, you have a ready audience in me.
The "what missing parts?" question was topical, as many manufactures provide for customization to meet the demands and budget of the customer. Some folks don't appreciate that they are purchasing parts for a system- so when the "car" shows up without an engine, they become incensed, not realizing they needed to order a specific engine. I don't know what your expectation was here, whether or not it was mistaken or justified, nor if your reaction was appropriate... or not.
So, you can help us get a better apprehension of the folks at OF, or maybe we can help you understand why you got the results that you did. It seems to me that any constructive exchange has to start with respect for the folks who have come together to talk- and that means not dismissing questions. I mean, who likes to be ignored, right?
