  • Earlier this year we had the chance to interview Spanish-born architect Santiago Calatrava in his New York apartment. Trained first as a structural engineer, he has designed and completed over 50 projects, which include bridges, transportation hubs, theaters and even a skyscraper. Calatrava has built a career through public architecture, and thanks to open competitions he has received commissions for mostly large-scale, cultural and transport projects.

cómo he esperado este momento, es cierto que muchas de sus obras tienen ciertas carencias y defectos, pero no se puede negar que tiene un don para el diseño que pocas veces se encuentra y además tenemos la suerte de que sea español :)

My main question is since he is an architect and structural engineer how does he engage in the work flow? Like does he sign both architectural and engineering drawings or?

Nope, he study civil engineering because he wants to know about that field not because he wants to be an engineer. He is practicing architecture now so technically saying he’s and architect that knows a lot of about engineering. He employe both architect and engineer so those people handle the job

Sig. Calatrava started in art school then switched to architecture then switched to civil engineering...it's almost always the reverse! :P

The word “art” is derived from the Latin ars, which originally meant “skill” or “craft.” . Architecture is a group of skills of somones brains and mind to make a building beggining on paper from a line.

@@voicetube the problem is he didn't care about context. The bridge is very beautiful by itself, it's just not for venice. I don't know why the venice government approved it.
