Ive listened to the entire Myst storyline. Here is a perspective for new viewers. The D'ni are kind of like a pantheon of gods exploring creationism paired with greek levels of drama and familial infighting. Only instead of lightning or powers over love, their godlike creation powers are based on understanding the power of the written word.
This "game" is more of a talking book than an interactive gaming experience - hours and hours of characters talking, talking at you... Very self-indulgent and only for hardcore fans of The Lore.

These ages have a lot in common with each other as there links to the same general location as the first. The symbols are numbered in bahro terms of understanding the meaning of the word go not into the same general ideas as esher or yeshua or you fail to understand the least the least is the Bahro considering themselves as dead already for there is very little left of themselves to do but give and keep giving

Didn’t this game use the source engine from Valve? I remember playing the demo thinking it looked very impressive, physics was the new thing in gaming after Half Life 2.
The thing that always disturbed me was how occult themes creeped into the Myst narrative and why Cyan allowed this to take place. The innocence of Myst, Riven, and Exile, a wonderful story with so much promise and endless possibilities, shattered by a foolish decision.
