DON'T PANIC - Here's the FACTS on the US Heat Bulb Ban

  • I've been sick lately, and I don't usually make videos like this, but given the subject matter and the source, I felt this was important enough to say something.
    Key points:
    1) Incandescent reptile heat bulbs produce Infrared A, not UVA. The fact that incandescent heat bulbs produce IR-A is important because IR-A is the strongest form of infrared produced by sunlight and key to promoting efficient thermoregulation and optimal welfare in captive ectotherms. NO OTHER lamp on the US market produces IRA - not heat projectors, not heat emitters, not heat panels, nada. There is the Reptile Systems Gold Infrared Lamp unit, but I assume this would be covered under the incandescent ban.
    2) Heat projectors (DHPs) and heat emitters (CHEs) are not better or more efficient than incandescent heat lamps. In addition to not producing light, the types of heat they produce are less effective than incandescents: IR-B and IR-C. This means they promote a lower standard of welfare for captive reptiles and are not acceptable alternatives.
CORRECTION: In my video I say that Kevin refers to heat projectors as better than heat lamps, when he was actually talking about heat emitters (CHEs). Heat emitters are WORSE than projectors because they produce almost exclusively Infrared C. I acknowledge that Kevin does say that they can't replace basking bulbs, but the way he phrases this segment suggests to the uninformed viewers that CHEs are an acceptable alternative if the problem of visible light can be solved, which is false.
    3) Don't panic and don't start bulk-buying heat bulbs quite yet. Instead, write to the US Department of Energy explaining why incandescent heat lamps are important to ectothermic animal welfare and support the organizations that are lobbying against this legislation.

It is already difficult to find heat bulbs locally where I live, and I have a lot of reptiles, so it does concern me that they will become more expensive. Thanks for making this video. I always appreciate your content.

I do have the same concern, I can still buy my bulbs (halogen floodlight 120W) in a hardware store for half the price than those you can buy in a pet store from Zoo Med, Arcadia, Exo Terra... So yes, down the line it will be more expensive 😣. I will go sometime soon get as much as I can before the hardware store stops selling them.

Glad you did this. I've found old school minimalist keepers seem to have less information than a lot of novices today. Sounds like some folks are taking the opportunity to try to slam thru a ton of sales. LOL Which companies are doing the lobbying?

I just watched youe live stream and was wondering where on Reddit will the corn snake project be and will there be videos on the corn snake project.

Thanks for watching! I'm not on Reddit (I just occasionally lurk, haha), so the project won't be documented there. Any documentation of the project will likely take place on the ReptiFiles blog and/or Instagram. Might try to make something cohesive for RUclips at the end of the project, but that's up in the air.

They've already stopped making and supplying UVB in the zoo med notice :/

This isn't true. The only UVB lighting affected by this ban is the coil bulbs which really are not appropriate for most reptiles anyway.

Reptiles and research did a GREAT deep dive on reptile lighting (and how it corresponds to reptile vision) about six months or so ago. Definitely worth a look.
Also yeah, CHEs are really only suitable for supplemental night heat since IR C heats the air more than it does anything else
