Wow, Thank you Em for the clarification of the difference between the two. As a person that didn’t know the difference between the two, I now understand the points of both communities. Personally, I think it's important to find a balance between animal rights and animal welfare. While I believe that animals should be treated with kindness and respect, I also understand that humans have been using animals for various purposes throughout history. As long as animals are treated ethically and their well-being is prioritized, I think it's possible to find a middle ground that respects both their rights and their welfare.

I forgot for a while that this differentiation exists in the animal community 😂. I would say that I am mostly on the side of animal welfare but i also agree with certain points in animal rights like being against using animals in testing for cosmetic products and that we should leave some wild animals alone.
    Love your videos,Em ❤❤❤

Absolutely agree with you here! There is no black and white unless you’re an extremist. I personally dislike but understand the need to test on animals for medical advancement. I do not support the testing of animals for cosmetic purposes

Yeah I firmly believe that the "animal rights" position is untenable. They usually rely on a naturalistic fallacy, the notion that what is 'natural' to an animal must be better for them, but that's clearly not true. Access to veterinary care, protection from predators, the highest quality food. There are countless benefits and in spite of what negatives there might be, I think is quite obviously a net positive. And I've seen countless times at expos or when talking to neighborhood kids about my own reptiles how interacting with one animal can inspire a deep interest in animal welfare and being ecologically conscious of how their actions influence the world around them.

I agree with animal rights activists when it comes to animal testing, specifically when it's cosmetic testing, but i can't imagine not being able to have my pets. I think sometimes our animals need us just as much as we need them! Besides, if those spiders can have tiny pet frogs, then why can't we have tiny pet frogs? lol
The best thing we can do is ensure every animal, whether wild or in our care, is safe, happy, and healthy. ❤

Animal rights is so extreme. Animal welfare is so important! I went to the baraboo zoo in Wisconsin and their “education animals” were a cockatiel & indian ring neck who were in a cage with branches outside with no water or food. Not an employee in sight at that place. I hope they are being treated better cause I raised hell and was so tempted to steal them 😢

Beautiful discussion & presentation . Also reminds me of the American distinction between house & field slaves in centuries past. Very difficult moral issue that impacts ecology, conservation & indigenous peoples. Possibly evolving technology, such as experimentation on cell colonies not animals or impoverished/marginalized people may hold the answer for our combined future on our ever evolving planet. Population control may also become a critical issue for our species too...

This is really interesting to hear about! I’ve always described myself as an animal lover and even did a ton of research in many different topics (animal behavior and biology) yet I did not know there was a difference between animal right and animal welfare! Great video; it really had me rethinking and now I’m writing down some more things to look up for myself 😁

I'm angry with animal right activists right now. There's a natural reserve near where I live that has become overun by deer. The city decided years ago to put down a certain percentage of deer in order to preserve the environment. Animal rights activists sued the city and postponed the plan for years, creating an ecological disaster. The city eventually won but now they'll have to put down way more dear than they had originally planned and some massive damage has been done to the reserve.

This is such an important topic of discussion. I still sit between some of what animal rights stands for and also animal welfare stands for. I have 6 cats, all rescues and I do have a ferret, also a rescue. I can afford to care for all of my babies. They all go to the vet and are all up to date on their vaccinations. I'm still discovering myself going deep down the rabbit hole on these important topics. I appreciate you sharing, educating and highlighted the difference of animal rights and animal welfare Em. • @WitchersCreatures

Thanks for discussing this Em. This was an absolutely important topic to touch on and go over. Personally as an animal lover I’m on the side of animal welfare as I’m always looking to see how I can personally better the lives of my animals. Whether it’s the size of their enclosure, the best overall diet, or absolutely anything that I can do to better their lives. As well as help educate people who love animals as well and help them give the best care for their animals to live a great life. Now as I don’t agree with a lot of the things animal rights activists say or do, I however respect their opinions and ideas as to what they might think is best for animals that are in captivity. Do I think that people of both sides can come together peacefully, have a conversation about everything and make a common ground on what can be done for animals that are already in captivity? Yes.

Question for you - would you consider animals used in educational visits to schools to fall under “circus”? And do you think there is a difference between a dog or a horse in a circus, when compared to a monkey or a lion? :) I ask because these are the finer points that often get lost when AR and AW both try to push and prevent laws :)

    • @thegoldenminecrafterrjm7114
      @thegoldenminecrafterrjm7114 8 месяцев назад

Educational programs to me means they are for spreading awareness about the animals and. Showing people that. You don't have to ariad of. cause otherwise in my opinion people tend to lean towards killing them to protect themselves . And or live stock they do it for a higher purpose then just. Entering well. From my understanding a "circus " tends to have exotic. Anamals for the wow. Factor.
And well barn anamall in opinion horse pigs dogs sheep exct are better equipped for traveling long distances and tighter quarters
Also I believe that exotic animals such as monkeys and tigers big cats bear need a lot of space and time and I feel that a lot of circus wouldn't put the time in
And as for the pet industry I strongly believe that we should never buy wild caught animals unless you want to breed them so we stop tackling from the wild population

Pets are a relative you pick from a litter. Except my cat, who adopted me. They're companions, not captives. Sister, brother, cousin, dog, cat. Wolves and humans hunt alike, so we teamed up and got dogs. Cats domesticated themselves: Our kids played with their kids, and then we saw that cats ate what ate our food, and the rest is emptying a litter box for the next 16 years. Other animals as pets? I don't see a human having a parrot, for example, because they outlive us and have a hard time re-bonding to the new human. A snake or reptile? Scorpion? Centipede? I don't know if they can have an emotional bond with a human. Humans eating meat is older than our species, so we need to treat animals well and slaughter as humanely as possible. With that in mind, hunters need to be an expert with their shooty-thing so that the animal suffers as little as possible.
Now, I have a massive giganourmous issue with people feeding our carnivorous companions a vegan diet. That's seriously infringing on their rights and welfare. The right to a proper diet and good health are at play, here. Vegan diets for dogs and cats will kill them or seriously shorten their lives while making life living Hell in the meantime. I feel that people who do this to dogs and cats are abusive and neglectful, and should be prosecuted as such, and makers of vegan dog & cat food must also be prosecuted.

I am more an animal welfare, because to be frank, animals have been so intigrated into our society, it feels wrong to not have animals as pets. And pets also holds such an important role in many people's lives, for example, service dogs, emotional support animals, search and rescue dogs. If we do not have them we would not have been able to so many things. So I believe that animals should be able to live with humans as pets, be used for educational purposes but they should be done with the animals safety and comfort in mind at all times. At the same time, I do really belive that animals should never be used for testing for cosmetic reasons.

  • @sachinraghavan4556
    @sachinraghavan4556 6 месяцев назад +4

Animal rights is a philosophy that seeks to give non-human animals equal moral respect and consideration as humans. The big flaw with animal welfare is that it tolerates practices that fundamentally abuse and kill animals including exploiting them for dairy and entertainment, confining them, and slaughtering them for meat and skin. It also holds that animals are property to humans. Animal rights abolishes all of these, while welfare is has good aspects it's a flawed ideal that retains that animals are inferior beings to humans, rights gives them an equal status and aims to reject and boycott the practices that abuse them as much as possible.
Rights says that we shouldn't support practices that abuse animals as much as we possibly can. They should not be commodified, bred into existence, or killed for products harvested off their bodies. Welfare fully allows this, just so long as they're not abused too harshly by the standards of welfare activists. But the acts of domesticating, breeding, confining, and slaughtering them are tolerated by animal welfare despite being fundamentally cruel. This is why more people prefer welfare over rights, cause it enables greater freedom to use animals like they're objects and inflict inherently cruel acts on them, which the rights philosophy opposes.

I'd say that I am, in principle, on the animal welfare side, but when talking about pets/zoos/aquariums I do think there are some animals where "thy're already in captivity we just need to make them happy" just doesn't work, because the requirements are not realistic at all (Elephants in Zoos are the main ones that come to mind but I believe white sharks are as well). In those cases just outlawing keeping them in captivity does make sense to me. The other problem with animal welfare is of course that current regulations are not really up to par and really difficult to enforce short of making random house calls to all pet owners.
PS: I have 0 problems (at least not morality based ones) about ethically sourced meat/leather, like, if I was a cow, I'd rather be eaten than burned after I die.

This might be a fairly long comments but I do have some thoughts
Personally for me, I think I lean vastly towards animal welfare but I do agree with what SOME of the animal rights activists say.
For starters, the monkey story. I don’t believe the monkey should’ve been entitled to the money because like, what would it do with the money? It has no perception of it. The selfie was taken out of curiosity. What I do agree with though is how some of the profit made went to helping the species. I would never tell anyone that they have to donate some of the profit but I do definitely appreciate how even a little bit of the profit went to helping them.
Secondly, I was vegan for a little bit but it didn’t work with my lifestyle. For me I did it because of how inhumanely a lot of the animals were kept. I still only drink milk substitutes but as for things like butter, eggs, and meat, I just make sure I get the best kind, free roam, under the best care possible and killed humanely. I don’t think everyone should go vegan but I do think that a lot of people could even help a little bit. I do understand that a lot of the time those things are out of budget and you have to get the more inhumane options, I’ve been there, it sucks that the price is higher for more humane foods.
Now animal testing. This is a big one for me!! I don’t think animals should EVER be used as test subjects for cosmetic purposes. At this point in time, we have so many more ways to test our cosmetics and I think injecting animals with poison is absolutely inhumane. I don’t know much about medical testing but I can imagine that we also have other ways that aren’t on animals. If we haven’t come up with those yet, I would say that animal testing for medical purposes only would be OKAY. Of course it wouldn’t be ideal and it would still be extremely sad but it may be necessary.
So now for my final (I think) stance is zoos and aquariums. This one’s a tough one. Overall I try to avoid them, most of them are inhumane, keep their animals in small enclosures, and just overall don’t give them a good quality of life. There are some zoos that I LOVE though. There’s one near me that only has animals that are rescued and need rehabilitation or just can’t go back into the wild at all. There are also zoos that just do things right which are amazing!! Aquariums are more difficult though, I’d say that most animals commonly kept in aquariums shouldnt, it’s basically impossible to keep them happy and healthy. But there’s also Brian who’s working on the Legasea aquarium which I have no doubt with be amazing!! But most aquarium’s I’d go to the point to say lean more towards sea world rather than legasea.
I remember seeing you post something like this on your Instagram story quite some time ago and it’s definitely helped quite a bit! The amount of times I’ve corrected my teachers on rights and welfare is honestly scary
Thank you for touching on this em!!

In this framework, I am very firmly on the side of animal welfare. In general, human needs trump animal needs and any notion of animal rights does stem from human agency and our decision to conclude that animals' undeniable capacity for enjoyment and suffering does lay certain obligations to human beings. In my eyes less so because the animal bears rights, but because animal cruelty or a gross violation of an animal's needs in exchange for very little increase in human prosperity, does go against the universality of humankind. The requitement to treat animals with kindness and without cruelty has is based in our relationship with our humanness and humankind and not in any intrinsic property of the animals themselves.
I think there are quite a few cases where animal testing - as hard the practice might be to stomach - is unequivocally not only morally permitted, but required. Which does go for a lot of - but not all - medical stuff and in some very few cases regarding cosmetics. At the same time I do think that in pet holding is not warranted in many cases, as people lack either knowledge, resources or willingness, to keep the pet according to its needs. This stance has softened significantly since I have seen (and read about) how beneficial pets have been to some peoples' mental health.
Personally I do not own a pet and would not get anything more troublesome than a snail, as I am unwilling to spend the resources to accomodate the pet's needs and in general find most pets - if I encounter them in friends' and family's houses - rather stressful.
Regarding the macaque case there have been a lot of legal discussions on the topic, which is a great mess. As far as I remember the rulings vary from country to country with some courts saying that "a monkey-made photo has no creator and therefore the photo lies in the public domain" and others being of the opinion that the selection process of the photo suffices to give the photographer copyright claims.

Absolutely animal welfare over here because some animals can truly be happier with PROPER human care and I believe we need to keep fighting for better care conditions of animals instead of spereation between humans and animals. Its SUPER important we teach humans that animals are alive just as we are and we should be treating one another well to the best of our abilities. As far as veganism, I feel terrible when I consume animals/animal products that had a poor life so im working towards having my own farm where I can be sure I have happy animals that are treated as well as I would treat my own dog. For now I buy local when I can but my body will not support veganism and my religion also states that plants have souls as well so thats not my path. Im happy we do have vegans and vegetarians because environmentally they contribute a difference (because treating animals poorly not only hurts the animals but also the earth) as well as rise awareness to the issue of the food industry. Alot more can be said but thats the surface lol

I have sensitive skin so try to stick with products that are natural/organic. As an animal lover, I try to use skincare and hair care products that are cruelty free and vegan friendly. I tend to find they are better for the environment and don’t use harsh chemicals etc that can be damaging to the planet.
I’m in the middle. I always try to avoid products or clothing that are made either of animal products or have been tested on them. I believe animals can feel pain and emotion just as much as humans can.
Therefore, I’m 100% against animals being used for entertainment like elephants being used so tourists can ride on them.
I believe animals can be kept in captivity if they are kept in a way that mimics their natural habitat and given enrichment that matches their needs.
I believe that we as humans are the voice of reason for those who aren’t able to stand up for themselves. To protect animals from harm.
Sorry for the long comment 🙈 I’m just saying I’m in the middle of where I stand ❤

I 100% agree with you. Animals aren't fun attractions or clothing or even devices to test our medicines and makeup on. they are living beings with their own mind and feelings and should be treated with the respect and kindness they deserve. Animals are georgus creatures and can make wonderful companions or educators if its done properly on the humans end ❤

I feel im more on the animal welfare side but i do think that we as humans can start viewing animals as more equal to us, as we view pigs equal to cows if that makes sense. Until we know more about which animals are sentient, i feel like its stupid to be constantly putting our own needs over that of animals and viewing ourselves as the superior species, keeping them in zoos ect. Domestic pets are obviously different because they are meant to live alongside humans and would not necessarily be better off in the wild. I also think we have every write to consume animals and their products bc that is what mother nature intended

I'm not sure how else to describe it, but full-on animal rights activism (at least what's being described here and what I've seen elsewhere online) seems really idealistic imo, it's a nice sentiment though I suppose.

I had no idea of these two schools of thinking and the differences between them! Super interesting.
Since Em asked for feedback- the only thing that struck me a few times throughout the video was that it was a little black and white in suggesting people pick one side of the fence to firmly sit on. I find that difficult, because I clearly don't agree with all the Animal Rights positions. So I am definitely more Animal Welfare, however a couple of times Em mentioned that side being okay with animal use for cosmetics testing, which I completely disagree with.
So the approach to the video being 'get informed and pick a side' doesn't super work for me. Otherwise very informative and entertaining, and a gold star for Kiba

Unfortunately she didn't really do a very good job as she conflated animal rights with animal liberation philosophy. They are pretty different. Basically animal rights philosophy is animal deserve rights as individuals and not property. So the core belief is you can't kill an animal unless their is a extremely good reason to. In the same way you treat humans. It's basically like saying humans should treat animals like children or prisoners. Treat them well but we are still superior. Animal liberation philosophy is the philosophy of equal rights.

  • @scifirocks

I'm a vegan because I don't want to harm any animals, but I really love my pets. I think I dot somewhere in the middle of the debate. I'm against animals being used in agriculture or cosmetic/medical research as it's cruel and unnecessary. I'm ok with ethical zoos like Whipsnade that breed endangered animals and keep them in large naturalistic enclosures, but against small ones. I'm ok with service dogs and other working dogs, but I think they should have a lot of off duty time and be treated as kindly as pet dogs. I'm against animals in circuses as we have lots of alternatives for entertainment.
I wouldn't want to have any pets that would require me to feed any other animals to them so I stick to herbivores and omnivores. I currently have 4 guinea pigs who I think are delighted with their life in captivity. They frequently popcorn, get zoomies, enjoy snuggling in cosy beds and frequently demand snacks and extra veg.

    • @davedavids57
      @davedavids57 5 месяцев назад

I love her videos but she got confused with her basic philosophy. She conflated animal rights with animal liberation. They are two separate philosophies. Animal rights is basically the idea that animals should have some rights. It might just be the right to have their lives considered before killing them. The idea that animals are not property is an animal rights idea. Animal rights supporters typically have companion animals normally rescued, they typically have tolerant views of service animals and horse riding. It's animal liberation philosophy that is about equality and seperation

    • @davedavids57
      @davedavids57 5 месяцев назад

Also typically the animal rights argument against captive breeding for endangered animals is normally that there programme are a sham. For instance either breading animals that won't have the skills to survive if reintroduced to the wild (like Pandas - non of which have ever been released back into the existing panda population). Breading animals from such a small population that it lack the genetic diversity to survive more than a couple of generations due to massive in breading. Or because no focus whatsoever is being put into retaining the natural environment of that species so it can one day be reintroduced.

I personally stand somewhere in between. I do not support unnecessary animal suffering. If you have the option to go vegan (depending on where you live and what acces you have to plant based foods) you should absolutely do it. Because if it is abuse when it is done to a dog it should also be considered abuse when done to a pig, cow or chicken or any other animal that is bred for their meat, fur or secretions. So here I lean more towards animal rights. Also I think zoos can educate people a lot about preservation of animals and their habitats, however not all animals can thrive in captivity. Killer whales and dolphins for example suffer greatly in captivity. For these animals some protective rules have been set in place, but there are a lot of other animals that too should not be kept in captivity. There are limits to what animal welfare can do for these animals so here animal rights come in. Yes, some of the animal rights standpoints are extreme but there are also limitations to what animal welfare rules can do.

I'm certainly on the animal welfare side of things, I disagree with the use of animals for cosmetic and medical purposes. I think a several specific groups of humans can be used for cosmetic purposes instead.
Also I support zoos and aquariums but only the ones that are for conservation purposes, of course hoping the animals have proper medical care, enrichment, proper diet, all the good things. The Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium is the first to come to mind as it's the one I go to most often and they truly do care about their animals. There's back stage living for the residents that don't/can't have a public enclosure but most of those animals get brought out for a scheduled talk. My favorite animal talk was about the opossum we have named Oliver, I was on a date with one of my girlfriend's and literally dragged her over to see him and listen to the discussion. Afterwards he was brought backstage. Also we have an Asian Elephant named Suki, she is a solo elephant because she bonded more with humans that other elephants due to being a former circus elephant. She's 59 years old which is far beyond the median life expectancy of 47 for female Asian elephants in human care. After she passes there won't be another elephant brought in though as more research has come out that they need more living space than can be provided. I'm unsure what will replace Suki but even with her health problems (including tuberculosis, arthritis and uterine tumors, a condition similar to fibroids. quoted from "Suki’s Secrets To A Long Life" on the PDZA website) she's still doing pretty good.

I'm more in the animal welfare side, but i feel is an endless path because you can always do better, depending specificaly on your resources, so it is subjective to do things right, in this scenario everyone who is doing their best to keep their animals could bot being doing so well because of money limitations.
What I have thought trough the years is that, as with parenting should, we humans should get some kind of certification, taking capacitation, evaluation, and depending on the specialty, re certification to be able to take care of determinate living being, demonstrating knowledge and affordability. This could be discriminatory, but is the only way to ensure the best welfare conditions for the lives under our care.

Didn’t know there was really a difference between those two things wow. Well I guess based on the explanations presented in this video at the least I’d lean more towards animal welfare cus some of this is really … to put it politely. It doesn’t line up with reality. I think animals rights are still important in terms of protecting them, avoiding abuses, but when you have a group of people suing on behalf of a monkey claiming that monkey can have intellectual property I’m sorry, those people have lost touch with reality a little bit here. I would say finding a balance is important … just with reason.

Actually dog's and cats chose humans as partners,
Especially dogs there is a clear gnome change in the modern wolf and the early dogs who found easy meals by staying with and around the early humans.
From this a bond was created unlike any other in nature.
Animal rights does not necessarily mean Animal welfare.
It has taken in a lot of cases thousands of years of working with animals.
These animals are now for their welfare dependent on us.
To think you can just turn all the animals lòsè ìñ the world is giving them a death sentence.

I am impressed with the level of intelligence you showed in this video, I am not sure, I agree with everything you do, but overall very well done! I set in the middle of this one for a number of reasons; one I believe it is impossible to 100% for animal right much like it is impossible to be 100% vegan we try, but somehow we fail thing happen outside of your control life stops for nothing, and no one things happen, and we move on, it is impossible to do everything all the time something always gets missed this more true as you get older (you're too young to see this one yet give it time because it is just behind you don't need to look behind you time will find you)! Here is a question for the animal rights ones! Your dog he is your baby, so I am not talking about him today as if this should be true, OK! Let's just pretend no one had him as a pet, he was living free how well would his life be next what it is right now sleeping with a belly full of food, and he knows where mom is because he hears her voice which why he is not even looking at her because he feels that safe to sleep with both eyes closed! Now do we know if he is happy to be where he is or would he be happier to be free! Do you speak dog no well does the dog speak a language you understand because I need an answer and if you can't answer that simply question it tells me that we know nothing, and we could all be wrong, and not even know it, and if you're wrong what gives you the right to tell me that I am wrong when we could both be wrong at the same time which is a possibility I am will to accept! Think outside the box! To think outside the box I am in, you need to be outside the same box I am, and that is easier said than done! Sorry for the bad news if you disagree!

I can not agree with animal rights as it is defined, only to a point. Nature has no rights. WE can dictate what ever "rights" we want, but is nature? No. We should not eat animals? So what about animals eating other animals? They get a pass but we do not? Are we not basically animals too? This is a "you cant have your cake and eat it too" instance. I agree we should mostly leave what is wild alone as best we can, and not abuse animals, but whose stopping animals from abusing each other? We are as much a part of nature as any animal. We just have a different perspective and societal structure and dynamic that gives us an advantage overall. We humans need law to keep ourselves in check, animals dont have it except for the "law of the jungle", and you seriously dont want that for humans. And theres no stopping us from having ANY impact on animals, theres just no way we can never not. Be pretty sad to not be able to help an animal in need because of animal rights. Nature destroys a lot of animals homes and lives with out any help from us, you see a lot of groups go out to help and rescue what they can. Id hate to see that stopped. We have animals that do not exist in nature as we manipulated there wild ancestors so much, there completely for existing with humans and have no place in nature, regardless if they look exactly like there wild counterparts. Wed be nothing with out them in our society. Im on the side of Animal welfare. Watch a hardened criminal pick a shelter pup to train and tell me your eyes dont tear up and your heart swell to see the bond they develop and that cold heart melt and turn around with another to love and care for. Isint that the very definition right there of being human? Theres just way to many positives to having animals for both sides to justify abstinence. I agree, its happening, we just need to do better to do right by what we have and interact with responsibly. And thats where education comes in.
This is an important topic and great to see brought up!

Personally, I kinda understand the animal rights perspective but it’s kinda unrealistic. Yeah, you can pass laws to stop animal testing to a certain degree but no way are people going to stop getting pets just because you say they shouldn’t. It’s unhelpful to sabotage attempts at educating people on how to care for their pets, pet owners already have pets and they need to know how to care for them properly. What do you want them to do, release their pets into the wild? Euthanize them? Laws around what pet species you can keep just cause many people to dump their pets, so animal rights people have some blood on their hands. Ironically, a movement all about progress makes us regress.

It's nice that you have been thinking this through, but I dont think you fully understand the animal rights side. It sounds as if you read the most extreme writing of certain animal rights activists and took that to represent all. If you should venture out to an animal rights event you will find passionate animal rights activists there with their animals. We refer to them as our companions, and we are their guardians. The refrain you'll hear when talking to animal rights activists is "Here with us, not for us." It becomes very easy to justify depriving an animal of their family, of their safety, comfort and lives when you argue that they are simply property for us do what we will with them. Also, is sounds as if you are conflating vegansim with plant -based diets. Someone may prefer to eat plant-based for their health or the environment and not care less about animals. Veganism is to avoid, as much as you can, doing harm to animals. Choosing to avoid animal products in what we consume, in what we wear and putting our support behind companies that create products that exclude animal byproducts and testing is part of trying to make the world kinder to all beings, of compassion in action, of believing that when we stand up for those who are exploited for greed and personal pleasure, we are taking the side of the innocent, sentient individuals who have every right to exist for their own purpose.

It's no different than Human rights and welfare. Certain rights, under the US Constitution, it recognizes that these rights are unalienable and bestowed by a higher authority than man, recognized as God. While welfare is VERY subjective topic. The fact that environmentalists have passed laws preventing controlled burns, and the actual maintaining of the land which includes animal welfare, these tree huggers have destroyed thousands of acres by preventing the maintenance of undergrowth.
