Hey I'm a teenager who loves animals and is hoping to get into an animal course in a few years time I decided to start my research now and get a head start so thank you for this video!
Update I am now half way through my first year in my animal course i also have started volunteering in a animal sanctuary yet again thank you for this amazing video! ~
I am a big animal person and I studied the behaviours of turtles since I was 14. Now I work at the Essex County's Turtle Back Zoo and have been working with turtles for around 12 years or so.
I hope I respond to my own comment in a few years when I’ve completed school and am officially a zookeeper. This has become my life long dream overnight and I won’t stop until I’m there.
Yo, I'm 16 and from Austrlia. I recently started my Cert 2 animal care course in Tafe while still in school. So excited to get out in that field of work
Hey I love your video about zookeepers!!(awesome) I'm hoping one day I will become a zookeeper I looooove animals I'm an animal lover of all kind of species!!!
Thank you so much for this video, this has truly gotten me excited and hoping to become a zookeeper, I’m definitely that creative person and I’m hoping to find experience but need to do my A- levels first before taking a gap year to volunteer somewhere or apply for an apprenticeship in zookeeping 😭
Hey Zookeeper Tom - loving these videos, genuinely fun and educational. Going into animal care after 10 years in the Tech Industry (heading to college to get my smarts). Watching your videos to help with inspiration and tips. Any tips when applying for work experience? How can you stand out on your application?
Hey thanks so much really appreciate the comment! as for Tips biggest one is make it obvious you love animals and that working with them in the future is your end goal. Also make it obvious you know its going to be hard work and not just going to be cuddling and feeding things the whole time. Zookeeping requires a lot of hard work cleaning, sweeping, painting, building, fixing, litter picking the lot. So make them aware your happy doing all of that stuff as well as the fun bits! i have loads more videos coming up about getting into zookeeping amongst other bits. Just trying to fit it in between working so stay tuned!!
@@tomzookeeper Hi Tom - Thank you so much for the advice! I am actually filling out an application for PWP at the moment so fingers crossed! One of the things that I love about the job is the physical work so will make sure that's communicated :) Keep up the awesome videos when you can!
I spent 2 years working with Aliigators, raccoons, turtles and Tortoises in south Florida I’m very interested in becoming a zoo keeper thanks for this video.
I’m doing my research portfolio for my school on becoming a zoo keeper and what degrees I could possibly have. I was thinking of a Associate degree in exotic animals and then a bachelors in animal health and science. This video was very helpful though!
Tom, Can a person with no experience be trained to be a zookeeper on the job. I love animals more then people. I can't afford any schooling I'm 37 years old and have 4 kids. I've looked after many animals. Dogs , cats, raccoons, possums amd bears. I know that's nothing like a zoo.
Thank you so much for the video you can't imagine how helpful it was for me Im currently studying my first year in biology and im willing to do a master degree in zoology im soooo passionate about animals Can you do a video about internships and how to gain experience it would be so helpful thank you 🖤🖤🖤
Poop? No problem! I worked as a nurse and now i clean porta potties!! Haha. Got human poop on me every day, eyes, beard, clothing, the things we deal with make most trainees quit an literally call their wives crying not kidding lol
I just LOVE these videos, they inspire me so much especially when no one else does. I want to open my own zoo one day but I think I'll apply for a zookeeper when I finish high school. But I was wondering how much you get paid an hour? Thanks for your effort in the zoo and this channel!
I’m a Zoo Animal Care student and had to talk to visitors during work experience at my local zoo. Engaging with visitors is very important as they help fund the zoo so that staff can keep the animals happy and healthy. 🫶
I'm really not a talkative person either. But I find it very easy to talk about the things I love, things like animals! Though each zoos keeper positions are different, educating the public kind comes along with it to some extent. Who knows, you may suprise yourself!
This is what I really want to see as a zookeeper. I'm also working as a zookeeper in Korea, but there's definitely a difference. In my personal opinion, Korean zoos are still far away but developing slowly. And I will go to an overseas zoo in about two years. I want to get a job at an overseas zoo, do you have any tips to help me?
Thank you so much!! can't believe people from all over the world are watching these videos! I think its important for Zoos to never think they have finished developing. We can always improve the welfare and how we work and look after the animals! Its soo important for us to always try and improve what we are doing. As for tips look for internships and or volunteering. there's a great website called zoowork blogspot that advertises most jobs from all over the world!
@@tomzookeeper You're really right. Thank you so much for the good information! I am planning to become an overseas zookeeper in about two years, so what do you need, such as a related degree or certificate? Besides, I would like to know the necessary qualifications in advance and prepare them. Also, I'm studying English, so how much should I make it? I'm so sorry to bother you with your questions.ㅜㅜ Do you have SNS? This is my Twitter ID. You may contact me as necessary. - @TZK_Daewon
Hi there! I love volunteering at various places so much, it's so much fun. But whenever I try to get into a big place like a zoo, even a small one that relies on volunteers, I call them and they tell me to email their volunteer program, and when I do that, they never respond. How do I get their attention well enough to actually take me into consideration and respond? Thank you!
Loved your video! Quick question - I have a degree in leadership, with an animal science minor. I’ve been an agricultural education teacher for 3 years thinking of a career change. Are my odds low of being able to go right into this career path? I’m thinking I’d be better off going back to school to finish the credits for zoology… 😊
Best thing to do is get some experience and easiest way to do this is volunteer. I don’t think your odds are low at all if you show your a hard worker and willing to always improve then no reason why not 😄 Thanks for watching!
Hi Zookeeper Tom you may not see this comment since this video was made over a year ago but i was just wondering what kind of education you went through to be a zookeeper? I was originally going to get a degree in agriculture and domestic animal services because i was thinking of becoming a groomer but i really love all animals and would love to be a zookeeper.
Depends on where you are, I assume. But most AZA facilities in North America require a bachelor's degree in zoology, biology, ecology or something similar
