The Slave Pits is a reworking of actual history, The Barbary Pirates that raided Mediterranean Sea ports and shipping eventually dragging over a million European men into slavery and castrating them cruelly resulting death by shock, infection for over two thirds. That ended for the U.S. when President Thomas Jefferson sent marines to deal with the matter. They captured Tripoli, forced the Sultan there into negotiations that excluded American shipping from the approved target list.

The women were raped and sold sex slaves for harems, etc. The slaving went as far as Ireland and Iceland.
The US marines were formed to combat this. The putrid English theone had a deal with the Barbary Pirates not to attack limey ships. The limeys sat on watching it take place to everyone else. Remember the English crown did this world.

The problem with modern day gaming is it has become more popular than ever before. D&D is the biggest name in the game and has become the "cool thing" to be a part of. Just like all popular "things" there are always the few people (squeaky wheels) that want to bring it down. They whine and cry until they get noticed and change things to make them no longer popular or cool. Video games, comics, Star Wars, Marvel/DC movies. All of these are seeing the same trend. Then once the squeaky wheels have done their job ruining something, they move on to the next "cool thing".
This whole cancel culture of trying to implement trigger points of slavery or that Tolkien Orcs were black people, has be scratching my head, like what are these people smoking. I'm a black male that has been gaming since 1982, starting with Star Frontiers then Red Box D&D. Not once have I seen issues with any of the original TSR books. Everything that was written wasn't to glamorize evil. It was to show these things were evil and to put the players in the role of heroes to defeat this evil. Even if a player character was evil, that was supposed to give a character a moral choice to change or do better (Darth Vader/Anakin moment).
I’ve met Gary, Ernie and Luke Gygax. They are a bunch of great guys that enjoy getting people together, having fun and enjoying life. While also meeting new people and making new friends. I was lucky enough to have been a player in a game of Dangerous Journeys ran by Gary at Rock Con. He was a great storyteller and willing to take time to answer questions and talk with anyone. He was a fan of history and a lot of his adventures would use those tragic moments to build a fantasy story around. It was because of his stories and adventures he wrote, that made me as a kid more attentive in history class. Cause I envisioned them through the lens of a fantasy or action storyteller, all thanks to enjoying adventures written by Gary Gygax and the TSR crew.

This foolishness is not going to stop. DnD, Pathfinder and all the big games will keep heading in a direction of a new nerd era, with nerds that are more into anime, furriers and so on. Where sexuality and gender is a main point. In time even Critical role fans will roll their eyes. The good thing I see coming from this is that classical fantasy nerds and those who understand it's fantasy, not a reflection of the real world, and therefore in no way problematic, finds a new fantasy game and become the nerds whose game and players no one cares about. Like it was in the old days, before CR, Movies and series. And I will be perfectly fine with that. Leave me alone activists.

I don't have any dirt, just an observation. WotC has reduced D&D to a skinsuit. Look at the art for the new PHB - all of the races have been reduced to cosplaying humans from an advertising diversity checklist. Elves are humans with pointed ears, dwarves are short humans, orcs... well, Viva Los Orcs! Seeing all that identity pandering art (how many strong diverse casters standing with their arms spread? How many side-shaves?) proves they forgot their core audience. I'm not buying it.

Building an empire on problematic foundations and then complaining about the issues is contradictory. Wizards of the Coast (WotC) has inherited and perpetuated content from TSR, despite deeming much of it problematic. This situation is akin to building an empire on a pile of poop and then complaining about the smell. WotC imposes standards on the community to avoid tracking the same issues while continuing to profit from this legacy. It's too hypocritical, sending mixed messages to future generations and failing to address the own core problems effectively.

Of course for a number of reasons the reduced quality has not led to reduced popularity, but as interest in OSR and classic TTRPGs continue to rise, I imagine that WotC casting aspersions on these old editions is something of a premeditated defensive manoeuvre…. They are telling all their little bunnies “whatever you do don’t think about playing those old games, they are awful and bad and if you play them you will be a very bad little bunny”. Hasbro has one purpose and one purpose only and that is to increase shareholder value. If they thought the best way to do that was to mass reproduce 1e or B/X you bet your life they would do it. But those games take mental effort to play and 5e is serendipitously accessible to those who just want to roll dice and control an avatar representing some personal ideal (as opposed to doing the hard lifting of actual world-building.). There. Grumpy old man rant over.

So much to unpack with this topic. The guy who wrote the preface, I've seen him in interviews, and he's disgusting. All the things he hates he is. It's not surprising that wotc used him to celebrate the 50th anniversary. The dad things is, if I were that 10 year old boy finding DND today, I wouldn't come near it. it is easier to corrupt than it is to create. at present it's easier for wotc to retcon D&D and its lore into the ground to gain the potential favor of a few "key investors" than it is to make profits for all investors the old fashion way: through talent, creativity, innovation, and customer goodwill. they feel the best way to do this is to denigrate those who either created it or had a hand in going so. in that way, they suppose, it is easier to have the more foolish of their customers accept their actions as honorable, making their corruptions seem to be salvaging the IP from its "evil roots". customers who don't like those changes must then be condemned as something vile: racist or sexist or any other unpopular "ist". it doesn't matter if this works or not so long as the key investors fatten executive pockets. historically, this sort of "reimagining" has yet to be successful by executives attempting it. it didn't go well for disney or bud lite or any of the others. it all depends on whether D&D fans and players are foolish enough to buy into it - because once they do, everything will be fine and wotc's executives can move on to the next phase, then the next...

This is why people need to quit supporting WotC, their D&D product is unnecessary today with all the retro clones floating around. Also there are a lot of old school styled games which are not clones that are very good games, all of these are as good if not better than the WotC products. @@dracoyaminiatures5143 Here are a few alternatives to WotC D&D that I feel are worth checking out. I believe they can all be purchased through Drivethrurpg as PDF or POD, if you have a hard time finding the physical copies.
First let me mention all the games which uses the Ken St. Andre system.
      Tunnels & Trolls
      Monsters! Monsters!
      Mercenaries, Spies, & Private Eyes
The Lair of the Leopard Empresses
Ken St. Andre created the second ever RPG and the first RPG using a D6 system when he created Tunnels & Trolls in 1975.
Other game systems including D&D Retro Clones
      Basic Fantasy
      Labyrinth Lord
      Old School Essentials
      Swords & Wizardry
White Box (Fantastical Medieval Fantasy Game)
      Barbarians of Lemuria
      Pendragon
      Hyperborea
Spirit of ‘77 (a pulp style rpg set in an alternate version of the 1970’s)
Ape Victorious (planet of the apes inspired) is compatible with Labyrinth Lord and other D&D retro clones
      Nightowl Workshop games
Raiders of the Lost Artifacts (Indiana Jones Inspired)
Colonial Troopers ( Starship Troopers Inspired)
      Freebooters (Pirates)
Warriors of the Red Planet (John Carter of Mars inspired)
What I like about the Nightowl Workshop games, they are easily compatible to old school D&D and/or most D&D retro clones.
Of course any of the TSR era of D&D. Although now owned by WotC the purchase and play of the older editions can be a way of sending a shot across the WotC bow by not supporting their created and supported products.

It wasn't until 5th that I finally felt at home. While I agree that WoTC is a huge corp that needs to be heavily scrutinized, despite their greed, I feel like they are actually "trying" to be more inclusive for the right reasons.
