    I have the same Stihl splitting axe and it’s a beast. I’ve built 4 or 5 Tasmanian pattern axes since I bought it and a few double bits but always come back to the Stihl for tough stuff

      I always start out swinging one of my double bits or my own restored axes, but when it comes to the real nasty stuff. The #StihlSplittingAxe is the only tool for the job! Although I’m not the biggest fan of the handle, could be a touch longer and maybe even a little thinner in my honest opinion.

      @@dmnsawshop8160 Yea I do wish it was about 2 inches longer. And would really prefer if they went with the classic curved hickory handle rather than it being mostly straight. One other complaint is that the small spring pin that is inserted in the top plate has started to wiggle out after only a face cord of wood. But despite all that, it is an absolute unit of an axe, it really feels like an engineered tool.

    I have both of them Stihls but i prefer the lighter one razor sharp for only cutting trees and the heavy one for only splitting. For tinder i use the AX 6P huchet with the fiberglass handle which is way lighter. Nice video man.

      Thanks! I recently acquired two vintage 4lb jersey pattern heads that I will be hanging on some choice handles and then they will be put to work!

    Like your suspenders 👍 You touched on it, if it bounces get something sharper. I have traditional style mauls, German/Swedish splitting mauls and axes. Big stubborn rounds will get 8lb sledgehammer and wedges. They all get used. I like using the sledgehammer with wedges for the simple reason it is easier to find a replacement handle due to over strikes. I don’t think I will ever be able to buy replacement handles for my Wetterlings since they are no longer in business.

      You are correct, there is a time and place for the iron wedges and a sledge... I actually have my great grandfathers splitting wedges.... if they could talk!

      Gransfours bruks bought them out, they have handles that will fit, you can also get one a little bigger and fit it correctly with some "whittling "

    I would use a 4 pound double bit with a thic convex shape using the flick. It would get through all that quickly!

    • @dmnsawshop8160
      @dmnsawshop8160  2 года назад

      If you’d like, check out my other wood splitting videos and you’ll see some more double bit action. The flick is a very helpful technique, but I honestly don’t use it much. With a sharp sharp axe and the skill to hit the wood where you want, an axe man can slice up these Fir rounds pretty easy.

      @@dmnsawshop8160 well the flick isnt for hitting accurately, it’s to split without hitting the ground, I don’t stack up my logs, I’d just leave em on the ground and hit them however they are, also sharp axes stick worse, I wouldn’t put any sharp axe for splitting.

      @@fallingsuncreations9270 if you watch any more of my splitting videos, you’ll see that I rarely stack wood rounds up as well, mainly did in this video to for visual purposes

    I own both, & the maul is MILES better for splitting large blocks with, but only the splitting axe can split both blocks and comfortably shave some kindling as well when held high on the handle. So the axe is more versatile, but it cannot tear through large hardwood blocks the way the maul can, it just can't. I really dislike the short handle on the axe too. I am not a very tall (170cm) person, but long handles are far more effective, far safer, far less likely to see you hitting the ground or yourself, and they provide more leverage. I really disagree with the whole, 'the handle should measure the length of your arm' thing, it's BS.

    you may just use Ochsenkopf splitting hatchets for the smaller stuff ^^ 1250g heads with or without Rotband plus system. 50cm Handle

      Huh? I’ve got the splitting axe, and now the universal forestry axe both with the rotband system. The axe and handle connection seems to be bomb proof
