  • Greetings!
    Thanks for taking the time to view this video. Today's project is an experiment that I wanted to try...making an oval shaped bowl on the lathe, without any fancy chuck accessories.
    Since it was unknown whether or not it would work, I used scrap 2x6 construction boards.
    Each bowl was a different technique on the inside, as well as the finishes.
    This video is for entertainment purposes only but if you want to try it out for yourself, please do so using the upmost care and caution when it comes to working with power tools and machinery.
    Please consider subscribing, liking and sharing if you would be so kind. Your support for my channel is very much appreciated and will give me the inspiration and incentive to create more fun project videos in the future to share with you.
    Have a wonderful and creative day!

    Great ideas. Someone mentioned finger recesses under the sides on the round bowl but if the underside were turned to match the concave side with flattened undersides to the handles you would have what my wife's Scottish side of the family would call a quaich. I think they are also referred to as loving cups. My brother is getting in to wood turning so I will definitely recommend this video to him.

    Interesting!😊👍❗
    A couple of things you could try, in future versions.
    In the first bowl you could make some finger recesses, on the underside.
    And in both, you could insert a contrasting disk into the mortise.

    • @myambitiousart

      I'm in my retirement, but like you I'm experimenting.
      As soon as my unheated barn/workshop gets warm enough to work in, I'll be starting again.
      Your ball gouge looks like a useful tool!
      .

    • @myambitiousart
      @myambitiousart  2 года назад

      I'm lucky to have a heater in my shop, it's still quite chilly here too.
      That ball gouge is great, but it does tend to want to go where it wants...really have to keep a firm grip on it!

      Being a barn, my workshop is open to the (very) fresh air in many places, so impossible to heat at present.
      I get the occasional bird or bat in the place.
      Used to have a house martin nesting on one of the beams.
      The bats are a menace, they piss every 10 seconds and shit every 30 seconds.
      They eat thousands of bugs, and every bug is a shit! Their piss is very corrosive, so I have to cover my machines in plastic when not in use, or they get ''rust sores'' all over.
      I had two resident, but I guess they have since died. Another visits from time to time, but keeps out of my workshop, so far, thankfully.
      I actually think they are amazing creatures. They can catch flying insects at night in almost total darkness, and their aerial acrobatics, visible at dusk, are amazing.
      Here's a quote for you, (thought of the day)!
      Good decisions come from experience. Experience comes from making bad decisions! _Mark Twain_
      (You could replace the word ''decisions,'' with ''designs,'' and it would still be true.)

      Thank you for watching. I filled a jar with white distilled vinegar and put a steel wool pad in it to soak overnight. I then applied about 4 coats of this solution to achieve the stain. I hope this answers your question. 😊

    it's good you get bored🙂 ... but your experiment seems to have created interesting results. i like what you did with the vinegar/steel wool finish - turning odd shapes is fun eh?

    • @myambitiousart
      @myambitiousart  2 года назад

      Yes, boredom begets creativity! I researched how to turn an oval piece and found a few results but they used some fancy instruments. I had the thought on how to achieve it in my head for about a week and am so glad to have tried it. As far as the vinegar solution, interesting result for sure and quite frankly, I like the rustic look. Thanks so much for watching and glad you like it!😊
